Neither company makes a car that I would buy or recommend. You ought compare models to models not companies to companies. A Genesis made by Hyundai is a far superior vehicle to say a Ford Mustang. The Mustang is a superior sports car and is a hell of a lot more fun to drive. Their prices are not comparable either. Stay with Honda, Toyota, Accura, Lexus and if on a budget Hyundai/Kia makes great cars for their prices, give 10 yr/100,000 warranties and are very easy and cheap to maintain and repair. I have owned, rented or shared or driven about 25 cars over 50 years. I have worked on many more. My 1968 Cougar XR7 is by far my favorite car BUT it falls far short on quality of both Accords I have owned on which I have put a combined 370k without a single engine repair. I have owned two Accords in 40 years and have spent a total of 1,039$ on repairs COMBINED. 139$ was for an electric window motor that was still working but fading got 18 years out of it. Just drove the 03 Accord 6k miles in the last 3 weeks. 178k nor one engine repair. Brakes, tires, one muffler. My 91 Accord had 193k on it when I sold the engine and transmission to be placed into another car. 193k, 900$ in minor repairs including a water pump at 110k. Honda and Toyota turn out the most reliable vehicles. Ask an independent mechanic or Consumer Reports. No other brand is close on quality..
No. He fathered it or birthed it as you choose. He backed it and it was his concept for FEMALE purchasers who wanted style in their 6 cylinder economy cars. The original economy class competition was Valiant, Dart, Nova, Rambler none of which had the styling of the Mustang. Iacocca saw a growing market of single females who needed cars to get to work. See film of its introduction at the 1964–65 NY World’s Fair. Females spokespeople (not just models) pitching the car to women. The car is NOT named after the horse notwithstanding the logo. It was named by Lee after the P 51 Mustang Fighter planes that helped America win WWII. He shepherded it and it was his baby for which he deserves 99% of the credit. He approved designs but was not a designer himself. While DeLorean created the first true muscle car by adding options to the Pontiac Tempest in a package he called “GTO”, Mustangs, Mercury Cougars, Plymouth Barracudas, Chevy Camaros, Pontiac Firebirds, Dodge Challengers, AMX and AMC Javelin followed suit copying the Mustang’s concept of an overpowered rear wheel drive car with bigger and bigger engines with more horsepower and torque than was “needed”. Speed was the point and styling embodied the speed. Many which in effect copied the Mustang became known as “pony cars”. The line between a muscle car and a pony car is fuzzy to some of us. A GTO, Olds 442 (4 barrrel carb, 4 on the floor, dual exhaust - 442), Shelby Mustang are clearly not “pony cars”. A 1968 390 Mercury Cougar XR7, a 2019 Dodge Challenger with 727 HP are examples of vehicles who some call muscle cars and others pony cars. I have a 1968 Cougar XR7 which I drive regularly. I am stopped by people of all ages asking me questions about the car or making on the spot offers to buy it. It is 52 years old and pure stock as if driven out of the showroom. When gas was cheap, style was not a victim to wind tunnels, aerodynamics or government regulations. If you wanted more speed you just put in a bigger engine, added dual exhaust etc. Most cars now are fairly generic to maximize gas mileage and conform with government safety requirements. Styles changed dramatically every year or every other year from the 50’s through the late 70s (at least). Not the case anymore. For example a 2015 Tesla looks pretty much the same as a 2019 Tesla which looks pretty much the same as a 1/2 dozen other cars. Manufacturers are saving money by trying NOT to put money into styling, reducing the number of platforms, colors, interiors. The average person with no particular interest in cars can’t tell a Honda from a Hyundai from a Toyota or Mazda. They can’t identify a BMW, Audi or Jaguar because A. they just don’t care (which is fine) but B. they lack the distinctive style differences of cars made from the 1930’s - 70s. You didn’t need to know anything about cars to recognize a Cadillac in 1959 not today when most Caddies are SUVs. The power of the Mustang badge is that its overall appearance is second only to the VW Bug as being recognizable to the public at large by its “trade dress” legalease for STYLE. Mr. Iacocca helped create that trend by building the Mustang on the same platform as Ford’s drab economy car which competed with the Dart, Nova, Valiant, Rambler American. It was called the Falcon. New body, for a new market - the female buyer.
