Review Q&A bentley owners club

How can I buy a Rolls-Royce?

Is this a trick question? your best bet for this (or any other specialty auto) is to Join the enthusiasts club FIRST, then start your search. Who knows, you might score a beautifully restored car for the same price as a ‘pig in a poke’ from one of the members. For you the club is RR/ Bentley Owners Club (in USA RROC for short or RREC in UK. U dont have to have a car to join. They are terrific people to know.

What is a status symbol and what's its purpose? Can you make an example?

Status symbols are usually expensive and sometimes flashy items such as Rolex watches, high end cars like the most expensive German or Italian cars, Rolls Royce or Bentleys, or mansions. However they can be other things like owning beach property or multiple houses, heavily customized vehicles, or unusual items like hearses. There are hearse owners clubs around the USA, and their members purchase hearses that have been used. The best definition would be a noticeable item that most people would not purchase or could not afford.

How much value would a 1930s British collectors car lose if it were re-registered in Britain with a date-related but non-original number?

Impossible to answer. You haven’t given anywhere near enough background. Some ‘1930’s collectors’ cars: So’s this: Ones worth a few thousand. The other, several million. There are so many variables, many of which could have an impact on value. Many others won’t except in the case of a well-established, documented history. (For example, a famous racing car). What about a car that was exported new in the 1930s? (A Rolls Royce shipped to the USA for example). It wouldn’t necessarily have had a UK registration, so an such car, re-imported and registered in the UK would get a non-transferable, age-related plate. It won’t matter in the slightest. Something that was previously registered in the UK, well-supported by documented will be able to be re-issued its original UK registration on a non-transferable basis, provided that the plate wasn’t issued to something else. If the car was left languishing in a shed for 40 years, it could well have missed the DVLA cut-off date in the early ‘80’s. In which case it could loose the original registration & be issued with a non-transferable age-related plate once restored & re-registered. No loss of value there, any ‘loss’ would have occurred in the early ‘80’s and would be minimal. Besides, owners clubs and factory records can help with the re-issue of original plates. If you’re asking about a 1930’s car that has had its original plate sold-on, you can reckon on a loss equal to the value of the plate that was sold. (Because: The value of the car includes an element based on the value of the old plate. The replacement ‘age related’ plate is not transferable & therefor has no value). However, if you are asking about a 1930’s vehicle that is well-known by its number plate (such as say, the old racing Bentley, ,UU5872,), you would have to be a fool to separate the car from its registration. It’d be similar to selling the makers’ plate from Beethoven’s piano. The error could be corrected by a future owner, but it’d be a hassle & that alone could reduce the value of the car by ,more ,than the market value of the plate. Like so much in life: ,It Depends.

What are the best ways to get a good deal on a used luxury car?

Firstly, with used cars in general, and luxury cars in particular, the total cost of ownership is wildly removed from the purchase price. My own experience (in buying, over the last 12 years, one Jaguar, two Bentleys, and two Morgans, none newer than 10 years' old) a simple initial filter has been to concentrate on whether the dealer will give me two years' 'any problems' warranty. If the dealer has done so, and I've liked the car, I've made an offer. If not, I've walked. Secondly, I have regularly joined the enthusiasts club for the marque in question a few months prior to buying (Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Bentley Drivers Club, Morgan Sports Car Club). I have then attended owner's meetings in my area. This has helped me, for the cost of a drink or two plus a years' membership, work out who the locally well-regarded dealers are, and who should be avoided.

What's the buying experience like when purchasing a high end luxury car like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls Royce, etc?

It’s pristine, unique and exquisite, what more can I say. They make the buying experience so wonderful that every time you sit in the car you can relate to it word by word and appreciate the heritage, luxury and uniqueness. It’s so great that I’d definitely like to personally experience it for once atleast, even if its with my retirement fund! The closest I have been to an actual buying experience is to assist my cousin buying a Bentley Mulsanne as a surprise retirement present for her father (my paternal uncle). Being the car-buff of the family I was asked to help, we called the dealership closest to home and booked an appointment to visit them. We got a follow-up call from a sales specialist, they took our information and asked questions on our interests, reasons for a Bentley and basic probing questions while buying a car, it was a 15 minute call with utmost professionalism and straight forward questions. On our first visit, we were guided to a posh visitor’s lounge. We were greeted by a polished British accented gentleman, he reminded me of Gustav Graves from Bond movie “Die Another Day”. We were given a detailed tour of the showroom, we sat inside a couple of Continental models and looked at Ferrari, Lamborghini and Rolls Royce models as well as they dealt with all premium-luxury brands. They explained Bentley’s offering and how they differ from each other, their uniqueness, heritage and how they could be an extension to one’s personality. We were explained term of contracting, the sales process and conditions of sale, though nothing towards the cost or an effort to finalize the sale. It was as if we were given a Bentley presentation at an exhibition. They smiled when we told them it was a surprise gift and suggested we get my uncle to visit the dealership for further process. We were surprised they never discussed options, packages and colors, we came back contemplating various theories as to why they won’t sell to us. My cousin spoke to one of her seniors for references who had bought a Ferrari from the dealership, he and his contact at the dealership both suggested that we have my uncle visit as the sales process is supposed to be very personal and individual focused. We didn’t understand at that point, but decided to tell it to my uncle, after initial reluctance he was convinced to visit the dealership. We made the 10% deposit and scheduled the test drive and “personal session”, we accompanied my uncle for another 5-star experience with Mr. Graves. This time with a pleasant ride in a Bentley Mulsanne, and everyone got their turn on the wheel while hearing the personalized version of the Bentley saga with every fine details about the company, its heritage, the Mulsanne, its equipment and customization options. At the dealership, my uncle had to undergo a personality assessment test, we were allowed to sit through but advised not to make any suggestions or inputs. That’s when I understood the personal focus they were talking about. In the personality test, they went over pictures of various exotic locations, some graphical designs and arts. After this the test results were populated and we were made to meet the design team, they reviewed the test results and based on it they suggested color, options for interior and exterior design, material to be used etc, infact almost all the aesthetics were derived from the personality test results including the buttons and knobs. Their personality mapping tool was very efficient, everything they suggested was bang on and my uncle really liked their suggestions, then it came to leather samples and inlays they actually make you touch, feel and select what you want. After 2 hours he got a personalized quote with expected delivery date 16 months later in early 2016. Our plans had hit a dead-end as we wanted something within 4–5 months which was impossible, we made them aware of our plan and told them we didn’t wanna go for a pre-owned. That’s when the Bentley customer service kicked in, we came to know that these dealerships don’t operate like regular car dealerships in many ways. A individual dealership hardly has any control on new inventory, it’s all Bentley. Within a week, we had a list of 6–7 names across the globe with similar vehicles due for delivery before our due date. Bentley was willing to work out a transfer for us and managed all the communication on behalf of us. My uncle was invited to owner’s club and various exotic car events to connect with owners to personalize and work out a exchange or transfer, someone from California was willing to transfer his delivery for a $50k premium. Wonder as much as you can, its one of the way wealthy get wealthier! 2 months later we were informed that a dealership in Europe decided to sell their demo which very closely matches our description, it had 3k miles on it and if we want they can it by our date. Moreover, it was discounted almost 30% from the initial quote and used only for few test drives and exhibitions. On the day of delivery, it was like walking down the red carpet. It looked like a cocktail event with my uncle as a guest of honor, the dealerships owner handed over the keys. My uncles personalized owner’s kit with his name etched on the manual, a personalized section from the CEO and the technical person who assembled the car. Even the documentation, the kit’s build material and the fobs were classy, something that could not be bought otherwise. A personalized concierge service which will answer any of queries, will help you with everything about the car. A in-person pilot sessions for 2 days at home, if required more from the dealership. In the 1.5 years of ownership since, he has enjoyed the car, convenience and concierge which any other brands can hardly match. It’s one of the ultimate experience that anyone who could afford these car deserves, I have a dream and one day I’ll live the experience too!

Why is Aston Martin struggling compared to other luxury automakers?

Aston Martin has historically struggled. It’s sort of definitional. Back the day, David Brown (the owner and the man behind the “DB” designations for various models) was asked by a fellow member of one of London’s prestigious clubs if he might be willing to sell a DB5 “at cost” in satisfaction of some side bet between the two. Brown tried to dissuade the fellow, but eventually relented - and delivered the car at a price some several hundred pounds more than retail list price (list price was only about £4000, so each car was being sold at a 10–20% loss). That’s not changed a lot since. Most currently, Aston did a couple of things which are likely to be problematic. First, they (rather ill-advisedly in my opinion) had a public stock offering and have been traded on the London exchange as Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings PLC. While this let the company raise some cash in the offering, it’s also locked them into financial performance indicia that are going to be very, very hard to meet. And when they fail to deliver the financial performance the stock price will drop, which will make it that much harder to get financial support needed to be successful, which will cause further failures of performance, etc all the way down the drain. Not great. Second, they are inevitably tarred by the brush of Brexit. No one knows what the total impact is likely to be but for Aston that particularly problematic as their engines are sourced from Mercedes, and the vast majority of their customers are outside the UK. So their base costs are likely to be higher, and there’s a chance of additional tariffs as the cars are imported at destination. Third, Aston set out a few years ago to construct a very large new plant to build the new DBX SUV. That plant opened in June 2019 - and if you look at the stock price, it immediately dropped from the mid £12 range to the current high £4 range. They’re claiming they’ll sell 2000 in 2020 and 4000 in 2021; I’m guessing the financial markets are doubting that, very much. Finally, the ownership is not aligned with the reality of the marque. Aston is a combination of enthusiast and luxury, closer to Bentley than Jaguar. It’s a very small, very niche market, and historically one very difficult in which to find financial success. The current majority owners have artfully structured a way in which to shed their stake to “the public” (which potentially includes a buyer for the majority of the company) in the public offering, but this is not a shop that can be run by “just anyone”. The product has to be exactly right, in a crowded market where there are a lot of people getting things very, very right. That takes cash - which has long been the issue with Aston - as well as vision - which has been a major issue since Sir David relinquished control in the ‘70s. Today’s headline of Lawrence Stroll “saving” Aston with a £500m bailout. Stroll bought 16.6%, which expands to 20% over time, plus has provided over £50m in working capital. Stroll is an “investor”, and a car guy, but not an operator. It’s hard to know if this is just another in the endless sequence of someone writing a check because they can’t bear to watch it die, or actually a turning point.

What are the most idiotic actions or decisions ever taken by chairmen or owners of football clubs?

I don't know if this qualifies for the most idiotic decision, but Florentino Perez deciding to not renew Vicente del Bosque's contract at Real Madrid, after winning the Champions League and La Liga in successive seasons, had me speechless. Madrid haven't won a Champions League since. Not to mention that they went changing manager after manager so often that I'm sure the players wondered who's the new guy who'll turn up for training next morning. Also, letting Makelele go wasn't the smartest thing to do, you know. Zidane himself ripped into Perez. Why put another layer of gold paint on the ,Bentley, when you are losing the entire engine? Source: ,Wikipedia, for the quote

What's the story behind your dog's name?

I re-entered the pet owners club when I took the leash from her cruel owners, and told them that any attempt to stop me, or any law enforcement intervention and things would go bad for them. Her name, a young female German Sheppard with traditional four colors, like the dogs the Nazi SS troops handled. They had named her 'shadow,' but mostly called her stupid, ugly, and when she approached they received much pleasure slugging her in the face, and if she was laying down, they would kick her in the guts as they walked by. The dog was deprived of sleep, and teased relentlessly, until she practically shut down. The dog and I had never actually met, as she was so shy around men in general, and in particular, men with cowboy hats, and outright shaking in fear if the guy wore a cowboy hat, sun glasses, and had face hair, the dog would lose bladder control, and became extremely flighty. I called her 'Ecko.' She was one of the best dogs I ever had the pleasure of owning, and she is the reason I found Mr. Bentley in a garbage can one Sunday morning in February. I named him Mr. Bentley Perfect, Esq. because once I got him out of the can, he revealed the reason why he was thrown away.....He was knuckled under, and could barely walk. I did not want another dog. I was so effected at his condition that I believe he was sent for me to find. I promised to give the little garbage can dog the best life I possibly could. I was unaware of the stigma towards pit bull dogs, but for this dog, nothing could be further from the truth. he is happy, well adjusted, and loves everything. I have never seen him just go off on an animal or human. He has been in some dog fights, but he is not a good fighter, so he would rather play rough. Then just this last November, I was compelled to take in a six month old female American Staffordshire bully dog. She was with the Parvo, so skinny, and frail looking, but was recovering, and had taken on the behavior of an untrained strong willed and very intelligent six month old untrained active puppy that frightened the owners because she was so active that she became destructive, and as she felt better, she became a Tasmanian Devil dog. She became sick soon after they brought her home, so they only knew a lethargic, puking sick dog. Once she was able to eat, she felt so good, and not even being house broke, or given any commands, she had full run of the place, and they wanted her gone. The day I met her, and Mr. Bentley was trilled, because this dog could play his way, and they did. She likes to 'talk' when she plays, and both dogs think if there is no blood flowing, they aren't playing hard enough. I had only began to wonder what to call her when I brought them into the house for dinner. Bentley has a strong case of resource guarding, and he is now five, so when the skinny less than half his size puppy wanted to checkout his dinner, Bentley flew into a rage, and rushed at the little dog. He expected his over the top display to send her out of the kitchen yelping, and looking for safety. Instead, she did not back down, then she unleashed a fury that could not possibly have been trained into a dog this young. She attacked with such violence, I got scared, and Bentley headed for safety, but stupidly cornered himself, and she chased him, and attacked him and he did not fight back, he was too busy fending off her teeth, and feet, and she would not stop. I pulled her off my dog, and Bentley was clearly shaken by the turn about. I wondered right then if taking this dog might be my little mistake....So she is Little Miss. Little MIS-chevious. Little MISS understood. She went back to Bentley's bowl, and ate hungrily from it, and when he approached, she looked sideways at him, and through her chewing, issued a low growl the sent chills to me. Bentley left the room... Everyone knows about how unpredictable pit bulls are, how they wont let go, calm one second, on your throat the next. I had never seen any dog behave like that, except for the one's that had been so mistreated they turned on everything. Missy is the poster dog for the media hype and is everything that is said about the breed.. Rather, she was. I could tell from her behavior she had to fight for everything before, and with the Parvo, she spent about two months starving. She was always scared, or frightened, so she took on the explosive rage thing to keep other dogs off her. She imprinted on me so fully that NO ONE was allowed to come near me or touch me without her growling, crouching, then like a stick of dynamite that is leaking, it can go off at any moment...She was an unstable hand grenade, and she attacked to cause injury, and she was relentless. Once a dog has established it's dominance, or has made the other dog blink, the attack is usually over, as the submission of the other dog insures who is in charge. Missy would run another dog down for playing with her toy, corner the animal, then like a prize fighter, rope a dope the dog until she was pulled off. I actually thought if I waited her out, she would...Nope, she was all in...she not only made her point, she engraved it into the other dog's fur. At about thirty five lbs., she beat the crap out of a two hundred pound Mastiff by chewing on all his legs, the ears, neck, belly. That dog was a blur. Once I pulled her off though, she behaved as if nothing like THAT had happened. The Mastiff and her play now, but for some time, the big dog would approach very cautiously..... I give my dogs a 'time out' for poor performance, and Missy was terrible. She knew better, but decided to defy me, then stare at me to challenge my authority. So I put her on a chain. She stood in one place for the whole fifteen minutes, and glared at me as if she was threatening me. Once I take off the chain, she goes and repeats the thing that got her hooked up, or she will escape the yard and run across the street, ignoring me, defying me, flipping me off dog style...I have good to excellent dog handling skills, but this dog so willful, and I did not want to break her, so I calmly and patiently won by out lasting her, and when she did do bad after I let her off the chain, I simply ignored her as if she did not exist. This is the worst punishment for any dog. To be ignored. No yelling, no finger waving, no striking the dog, ever, just put up your hand, and refuse to look at or acknowledge them for a half hour or so. It drives them nuts trying to get you to acknowledge them, then they begin to behave. But they do so because they want to, not because they weren't given any other choice. Missy is now a perfect dog in all ways, and so friendly that even people who are terrified of pit bulls tell me they have never seen any dog as laid back and calm, and well behaved as mine are....

What type of car do you drive and what does that say about you?

Here she is. Here I am. Here is a small walled town in France (Montreuil). This is our Morgan Plus 8. If you're English, you probably recognise the name Morgan. Founded in 1909 by H.F.S Morgan, his son Peter Morgan took it over, and then a few years ago, Charles Morgan, grandson of the founder, took over the family firm. Coachbuilt - that is to say, by hand. They made, for many years, 10 cars a week (except during the few weeks a year when the whole factory shuts down.) Then, owing to some process re-engineering, they were able to move to 11 cars a week. This is, and I kid you not, about the use of gravity. The factory is built on the side of a gentle hill. About 15 years ago, they moved the various workshops so that the parts start at the top of the hill, and now, over the space of many week, progress down the hill towards the paint shop near the bottom. The use of gravity rather than the more traditional "blokes pushing" has helped them increase production. This is the Plus 8 - launched in 1968, which remained in continuous manufacture until 2004. Not many car models have a limited-edition variant called the "35th Anniversary Special". Oh, and that 10-11 cars a week isn't all Plus 8s - it includes the Plus 4s (also got one of them!) and the 4/4... and more recently some other models... ... but the Plus 8 - the classic British sportscar, with the classic American muscle engine. This is what we call a Rover V8, after the British manufacturer who bought it in 1964, but Americans can think of it as the Buick 215, as launched in late 1960 for the 1961 model year. At 3500cc / 215 cu in, this is the original size (though starting in the late 80s, they started boring them out more.) This one is a 1980 model. That means that it's the same as the 1979 model, the 1978 model, and the 1977 model... oh and the 1981 model, the 1982 model, and the 1983 model. It's not that Morgan are anti-innovation, it's that they don't believe in change for change sake. It passed into our care in January 1999, completing a dream ,Mary Harrison, had first told me about before we got married in 1995. In fact, item number one on our wedding list had been "A Morgan, any model, any colour, any condition" - sadly, no-one bit. In December 1998, I bought Mary a flying jacket (leather and sheepswool) and told her that I thought we could afford a Morgan. We phoned round, and drove about 4 hours to a dealer that had two we might be able to afford. The first was this Plus 8. The second was a Plus 4 (a 2-litre straight 4). Mary came back from the second test-drive and wanted to test-drive the first one again. She and the late Andy Simm, owner of the garage, got in, and they drove off. I waited with Andy's wife. We had a coffee. We waited a bit more. The sun set. We carried on waiting... ... and back she drove, a grin on her face the size of Battersea Power Station, which confirmed what we were going to do, but did, with hindsight, undermine my negotating position. We joined the Morgan Sports Car Club. We got a Jag. We went to the 2000 national Morgan event, and saw, for the first time, several hundred of these together. I took the photo of the event that ended up as the cover short on the Club magazine issue that led with the event. We got rid of the Jag and got a Bentley. I ended up on the committee for Mog007, the national Morgan event in 2007 at Goodwood motor circuit. The Morgan remained the car we loved. We travelled to Wales, to Scotland, to France (several times) in it. Finally, in 2004, Mary put her foot down about one aspect of our lifestyle that has gone hitherto unmentioned.... ... and at her insistence, I learnt to drive.

What are the most pro-gun Western European countries?

This question makes no sense in Europe. In Europe, firearms are essentially, tools,. They are ,useful in right hands, dangerous in wrong hands and hazardous if abused,. Since we Europeans relate them as specialist’s tools, we also strive to keep them in right hands and away from wrong hands. We relate to firearms like we relate to automobiles: operating one is a right which is to be earned. If you live at a countryside, rifles and shotguns are ubiquitous. They are used on hunting and varmint control. Every kid learns to shoot before his or her 12th birthday. They are not carried openly, but kept locked when not in use. Many owners store the lock or bolt separately so if stolen, the gun is useless. Some people may own a pistol or revolver for killing a wounded game at short distance. If you live in a town, firearms make little sense, unless you are a reservist, or a guardian or a police officer or practice competitive shooting. Europe is the most densest inhabitated continent in the world, and as such, human interactions follow the Newton’s binominal distribution - also negative ones. Because of the risk of negative human interactions, officials are ,very, uneasy with short firearms. ,Derek Bentley case, is of course the ,cause celebré,, but manslaughters and outright murders were a menace after the WWII as there were plethora of pistols and revolvers around. When there are firearms around and when the amount of negative human interactions increase by the Newtonian binominal distribution, ,they also are used,. ,An armed society is a violent society,. Therefore everyone agrees that allowing people to carry pistols in a town is a bad idea - just as bad as carrying a sword in a town was in the Middle Ages - as it easily leads into using it. Therefore the authorities tend to have notoriously bad sense of humour on carrying a firearm in public in a town, and even worse if the weapon is illicit and you do not have permit for it. The result is that most European criminals do not have guns as guns are not ubiquitous in Europe, and obtaining an illicit firearm is difficult. Getting a permit for a gun varies from country to country. In Finland, it is easy. Just complete your huntsman’s examination, prove you have no mental problems nor criminal record, and fill up a form. You will get a permit to purchase a rifle and carry it. Or if you are a reservist, just fill up the form. The military will provide a statement on your eligibility to carry a firearm. But if you want to have a short firearm (pistol or a revolver), things get uneasy. You need to prove that you are an active sport shooter, or that you need such weapon because of your profession, or that you need it for some other reason (like being the squad leader in a hunt club, whose task is to finish a wounded animal). The law went anal after the Jokela and Kauhajoki school shootings, but it has worked. Keep the firearms off wrong hands, and everything will be just fine. Oh, how about improvised firearms? Well, we have a drill press and a milling machine in our basement. You do the math.
