How good is the Airstream/Mercedes Benz Interstate motor coach?

I just bought one. It’s a new 2021 24GT, 4WD. I’m now on my third night in the thing, answering my usual Quora business questions, when I found this. Airstream does some things extremely well, while others, I’m not so sure. First, the van itself. I’m super-impressed by the Sprinter chassis. I can’t say enough good things about it. I think Mercedes nailed it, combined with Airstream’s air suspension. It’s a pleasure to drive on the freeway. I bought one after owning two Class As, and the ride feels very similar. Now, for Airstream. They claim to have all the best of everything on the RV, but they don’t. The entertainment system is an antiquated joke. They still supply 1080 TVs and claim to have “50 best in class features” but no. The air conditioning is loud as hell, and I’m not talking a little loud. It’s nonsense. The closers for the drawers don’t work and drawers are always opening while driving. I’ll come up with a solution, but there again, they could do a lot better. The audio in general is substandard, and nowhere near “best in class.” It’s now a few days later, and the rear view mirror camera connection failed. I’m discovering some weaknesses in the overall design, so I’m not convinced this is anywhere near “best in class” or that Airstream is all that supportive of their own brand. I won’t get in to see the dealer about the camera until a good ten days have passed. This makes me think they are not as committed as they claim. The van itself is nice, but then I noticed that it’s old 2019 telematics software, and that the GPS is very antiquated in turn-by-turn, often getting changes wrong. Speed limits are also wrong. Not what you’d expect from a new Airstream. I’ll write more as I gain experience, but so far, I’m impressed by Sprinter, and less so with Airstream. I’m adding an edit after three months in the Sprinter. I still like it overall, but Airstream support is horrible to non-existent. I’d never buy another just because service is so bad I had to file a BBB complaint just to try and get them to honor warranty claims. Once I bought it, they treated me like I was on my own.

If you were wealthy, would you own a motorhome?

Question: “If you were wealthy, would you own a motorhome?” We think of ourselves as very middle-class but are sort of wealthy (no debts, nice house and cars, and some millions in investments and cash)…well, at least wealthy enough to buy a motor home. Last year we paid cash, around $200k, for this. It is a Mercedes-Benz Airstream Interstate. This is what the interior looks like. Why did we buy it? We like to travel, to see interesting places, and meet people. But our love for travel includes ,both, museums and cities ,and ,state and national parks and remote scenic places. We have vacationed and taken river cruises in Europe, visited cities, and cruised around the world. When we were younger we did a lot of off-road wilderness camping in Quebec Province and the Colorado Rockies. We have come to dislike and distrust hotels and motels. The main issue is that they are not sanitary…even the best and most expensive of them. Take a black light with you and project it onto the surfaces of a hotel room and you will discover body fluids on floors, upholstery, and bedding. Then there is the bed bug problem. Covid-19. The pandemic has made the sort of travel we used to do in crowded public spaces using airplanes, and hotels, and cruise ships, and restaurants unsafe and often impossible. A motor home allows us to still safely enjoy vacationing. The Covid-19 pandemic has increased the demand for Airstreams so much that the waiting list for a new one is now a full year. Convenience. The Airstream is fully packed with everything we need for vacationing with the exception of perishable food. If my wife says, “Let’s go to the beach.” all we need do is pack the pantry and the refrigerator-freezer and lock up the house. Personal preferences. I like things like French roast espresso and single malt Scotch and nice wines and lobster tail and prime steaks. These things, and the proper ambience in which to enjoy them, are not that easy to find when you are vacationing…especially in some of the places we find beautiful or interesting. Remote locations and Michelin Star restaurants are not usually found together. The Airstream is equipped with a La Pavoni espresso machine and a fully stocked bar and a 1500 degree Beefer Grill that plugs into the motor home’s propane supply. State and Federal Parks. Those in the United States are truly beautiful. Driving a motor home is the best way to visit them. And you find the nicest and most friendly sort of people there. OK. Why the Airstream rather than something else? Quality. It is a Mercedes. It has the quality of a Mercedes-Benz and it drives and handles like a Mercedes. The engine is a Turbocharged V-6 Diesel that is efficient while effortlessly powering the vehicle up mountain grades, and it has air suspension that not only smooths the ride but compensates for cross winds. It has all of the driver aids and safety features that you would find on a big Mercedes sedan. Stylishness. It is an Airstream. While many motor homes look like someone put low end kitchen cabinets in a delivery van, the Airstream has a yacht interior. Many of the fittings are, in fact, built for the marine market. The cabinetry is Italian made and nicer than you have in your own home. Size. At 24 feet long the Class B Airstream Interstate GT is just large enough for two people to travel very comfortably, while able to be easily driven on city streets and (carefully) in parking lots. (Airstream does offer alternate floor plans that sleep four and seat six. And they have a shorter 19 foot model.) We have friends who have owned bus sized Class A motor homes. Although those offer lots of space and can accommodate groups or families, they are difficult, unpleasant, and unsafe to drive off of the Interstate Highways. Go Anywhere Capability. Our Airstream has 4-Wheel Drive and Lo Range. It can, if I desire, be driven on unpaved roads or even off-road. At least I won’t get stuck on the beach or at a camping spot. The Airstream is entirely self-contained. It has several power sources. It can connect to RV 110 volt sources via a 30-amp power cord. It has on board lithium batteries and an inverter system providing both 12-volt current for the LED interior lighting and 110-volt electricity. It has two large solar arrays that keep both the vehicle battery and the coach batteries charged. It has an auto-start propane powered Onan generator that will provide power and charge the batteries. A thermostatically controlled propane furnace and air conditioner and vent fan warm or cool the coach. A propane powered instant water heater provides hot water for the bath and galley. The galley has a sink, two burner gas range, and a microwave. A 1500 degree high temperature Beefer Grill connects to the on board propane. The bath has a sink, shower, and toilet. Pushing three switches changes the rear seat and lounge seats into a queen size bed. And there are two LCD televisions and a sound system. Everything one needs for two people to travel. Floor Plans for Aristream Interstate GT and Airstream Interstate Lounge models. You can think of owing an Airstream Motor Coach sort of like having a cruise ship cabin on land. It is not for everyone. It is a bit expensive. You have to enjoy driving…and be very good at it. And you have to be very concientious about keeping serviced a vehicle that is both a Mercedes and a house with plumbing and electrical and HVAC systems and appliances and its own power generating plant. But it offers a convenient, comfortable, and quite luxurious way to travel both to cities and scenic spots. And it is arguably the only safe way to travel during the pandemic.

What are some weird things you purchased for your RV that you can't live without, or things that no one would think to buy?

Original Question: “,What are some weird things you purchased for your RV that you can't live without, or things that no one would think to buy?” Once you own your new RV you will realize that, however well equipped, there are a LOT of items you need that the manufacturer did not include. For example: These are just some of the items we bought to complete our new 2021 Mercedes-Benz Airstream 24 foot Interstate GT. A Blackvue 900x High Resolution front and rear 2-channel hard wired dash cam with night vision and wide angle lens. These vehicles are expensive. The sticker price on the Airstream we bought is over $200,000. And in today’s market it is more likely you will be asked to pay a dealer mark-up than get a discount. If an aggressive or distracted texting driver cuts me off and causes an accident I want a video record so that HER insurance company pays for the damage rather than mine! An RV Surge, Voltage, and Polarity Protector. The shore power at many RV parks can be problematical. Your RVs expensive components can be damaged not only by voltage surges but by high or low voltage or reversed polarity. You need protection against that. An adjustable water pressure regulator. Excessive unregulated water pressure can blow hoses and fittings and damage your RV’s fresh water system. You need a regulator with a pressure gauge to make sure the water pressure is not excessive. An RV water filter. You do not want to introduce contaminants or pathogens into you fresh water lines or tank. For that you need a filter. A Halotron fire extinguisher. Yes your RV likely came with a standard fire extinguisher. If you have to use it you will fill your RV with a corrosive white powder that will damage your electrical system. You need something designed for cars and aircraft and boats, a Halotron extinguisher. An RV air compressor. RVs have tires that require ~60 psi of air pressure. Many are dualies, that is they have four rear tires. Because the inside and outside tires have different wheels and the front wheels are different from either of the rear wheels, and it takes industrial equipment just to jack up an RV, and likely a sumo wrestler to lift one of the wheels and tires RVs seldom have spares. As a blow out on an RV could be catastrophic it is essential to frequently check and maintain tire air pressure. For this you will need a serious portable air compressor designed for RVs such as our Viair. A full tool kit consisting of both a socket set and combination wrenches as well screwdrivers and pliers and adjustable wrenches. Throw in a full set of fuses and some spare parts. A bike rack designed for the vehicle, not a universal rack. We ordered and installed a Fiaam specifically designed for our Mercedes-Airstream. Unlike a universal rack, the Mercedes-Fiaam bike rack allows us to open the rear doors and access the tools and luggage and camping equipment whether or not the bikes are in place and on or off the bike rack. RV Refrigerator Bars and Clamps. You do not want things in the refrigerator rolling about while you are driving. You need these. A LaPavoni espresso machine. OK, this is an indulgence. But I like good coffee, and I am not going to deprive myself of that when vacationing. An aluminum folding table. You will need it. Coleman makes a nice one. A Beefer 1500 degree high temperature grill. This plugs into the Airstream’s external propane outlet and quickly (~2 minutes on a side) quickly grills steak house quality steaks and chops and burgers. OK, it is another indulgence. but it is so good that I will grill steaks on it next to the RV even when we are home and the Airstream is parked on our driveway. Ekobo Bamboo dishes. Glass and china easily break in an RV. Ekobo bamboo dishes eliminate this problem and their square shape makes them convenient for the small spaces and tables in an RV. There are a LOT of other things we purchased within the first months of getting our Airstream. We keep finding others that make RV vacationing nicer and safer. But these are some of them that we could not live without.

What are the best used camper vans?

Original Question: “,What are the best used camper vans?,” The best chassis would be those built on the Third Generation (2019 to Present) Mercedes-Benz Sprinters when equipped with the 3.5 liter Turbocharged Diesel engines. These were also sold under the Freightliner nameplate, though that will be discontinued after the end of the 2021 model year. The Mercedes Sprinter chassis can be had in 19-foot and 24-foot lengths and with or without 4-wheel drive. Second best would be those built on the updated (2013, sold in USA as 2014 model) versions of the Second Generation Mercedes/Freightliner Sprinter chassis (2013–2018) with the Blue Tec Diesel engines. The best and highest quality interiors are on Mercedes based Airstream Interstates. The interior of these RVs can vary from High End Resort Luxury as shown in this Airstream Tommy Bahama Interstate GT to Extreme Sports as in this Airstream X Off Road version.

How many miles per gallon does a RV get?

Original Question: ,“How many miles per gallon does a RV get?” That depends upon the age, class (A, B, OR C), and whether it is gas or Diesel powered. Our 2021 Class B Airstream Interstate GT in Tommy Bahama trim, powered by a Mercedes Benz turbocharged V6 Diesel through a 7-speed transmission delivers a very economical consistent real world 20 miles per gallon fully loaded when driven smoothly at 65 to 70 miles per hour. The turbocharged engine has more than enough power. Like all Diesels it produces a lot of torque and is unfazed by either the weight of the vehicle or the steepness of mountain roads. The Airstream Interstate is designed for luxury with features such as air suspension. And ours has the optional 4-wheel drive and automatic levelers. Modern Class B RV turbocharged Diesels are much more efficient and economical to operate than the traditional truck chassis Class B and Class C gas engine RVs which generally have fuel consumption figures in the 10 to 14 mpg range. The Mercedes Sprinter chassis, on which the Airstream Interstate is built, is also available from other RV manufactures and some of them claim even better fuel economy figures than the luxurious Airstream. Winnebago claims 18 to 22 mpg for its Travato 59G. And Roadtrek advertises 21 to 24 mpg for its Sprinter RS Adventurous. Another good chassis for RVs is the Ford Transit Van. The modern RVs built on European commercial van chassis such as the Mercedes Sprinter or the Ford Transit Van are very different from and much more economical to operate than the older truck mounted conversions. Any gas engine RV will have a substantially lower initial cost and lower routine service costs. Gasoline engines, however, are much less efficient than Diesels for pulling heavy vehicles. RVs are heavy. Our Class B Airstream Interstate with 4-wheel drive weighs 10,000 pounds before we put hundreds of pounds of propane and water in the tanks and load it with gear and food. A gas engined RV of that weight would get no more than 12 or 14 mpg driven below 60 mph on level roads and less than 10 mpg in hilly country. The issue with gas engined RVs is not just the added fuel cost, but more importantly, the reduced range and the need for more frequent fuel stops. The large Class A RVs, the ones that look like Greyhound Buses, have fuel consumption figures of ~ 10 mpg at speeds below 60 mph and ~ 6 mpg at 75 mph. They are expensive to operate.

What’s the best RV to live in full time?

Naturally it depends on your budget, how much time you’re spending in one place versus driving, whether you’re single or have a family, whether you’re in hot places or cold, etc. My preference is for relatively small RVs, which get better gas mileage and are easier to drive and park. The new Airstream Atlas, built on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter 3500 platform is a good choice in my opinion for 1 or 2 people (who get along well). Interestingly, it is one of those magical designs that seems bigger on the inside than the outside, and it has many nice features. Bathroom with shower, kitchenette, closet, and a power slide-out section gives more space in the “living room” and since the captain’s chairs swivel there’s potentially seating for five. Kitchenette Nighttime bedroom configuration. This seems surprisingly spacious and comfortable for a smaller RV. Built in diesel generator, tankless water heater, rooftop solar panels, skylight, ducted air conditioning, all the comforts of home!

How are RV walls constructed?

The construction of RV walls depends upon the manufacturer. Airstream trailers are built on a sturdy chassis with aircraft grade aluminum and most are well-insulated. They are also usually the most expensive but with good care will last for decades. Many trailers are built with lightweight wooden frames, using thin composition board paneling on the inside and thin sheet metal siding on the outside. They have little if any insulation between those two layers and use cheap appliances. Motorhomes vary widely in construction quality depending on the manufacturer and their price points. The less expensive gasoline powered models are built on chassis made mostly by Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Fiat-Chrysler-Ram-ProMaster. I believe that GM-Chevrolet may no longer be in the motorhome chassis business. Most use metal stud frames with fiberglass exteriors and wood interior paneling. The better models are well insulated. Diesels motorhomes, unless they are converted buses, are built on especially designed frames. Two leading diesel frame suppliers are Freightliner and Spartan. The better brands of rear-engine diesel motorhomes (called pushers) have well constructed metal frames, high-end amenities such as multiple bathrooms, roll-out basement storage compartments, air conditioners/heat pumps, central hot-water heat, residential refrigerators, ice-makers, microwave/convention ovens, clothes washers and dryers, dishwashers, GPS guidance systems, computer-controlled air suspension rides, automatic leveling systems and high price tags.
