I wonder how much can a start-up convince the buyers that their car is truly a luxury one, which can compete German and British marquees, who’ve established themselves for 100s of years now. The problem doesn’t end there. The Porsche Taycan is a good step towards a luxury EV. So is BMW’s i4. But that’s only so because BMW and Porsche (with Panamera And cayenne) have proven to be good Luxury manufacturers. How can a startup prove so, I’m yet to see. The thing is, even if a good EV is launched, which is say, sub-20L and has 400+km range, people who are looking for a luxury car won’t buy it. Because luxury lies is the badge. That’s what the perception in India is. The Skoda octavia and Audi A4 are nearly the same car in terms of body and powertrain. Only the interior and badge are different. Still, Audi remains a luxury car, and Skoda, still just a premium sedan. One more thing. People already own Teslas in India. Obviously imported ones. They cost them anywhere between 1–2 crore due to high import duties. And installation of the charger at their home. But that number is way less than the number of imported luxury cars from “luxury companies” even in the same price range. You will find a lot of imported cars in 1–2 crore price bracket. The problem for Luxury EVs isn’t their price or specs. Someone might already have Mercedes and BMWs in their garage and still import a Tesla just for city use alone. And then proceed to use their ICE cars on highways or trips. Because they can afford it anyway. Do you really think that someone having the money to buy a top end luxury car has only a single car? If we talk about sub Crore EVs like Hyundai Kona, MG ZSEV or Nexon EV, they all belong to brands which millionaires wouldn’t even buy in their dreams. Common brands. Which common middle class people buy. That’s why a Hyundai Tucson or Honda CRV doesn’t sell well despite being better specced than an Entry level BMW X1 or Benz GLA class. It’s the brand which matters. Had Mercedes Benz GLA or X1 been an EV with the exact same specs as say the Kona or ZSEV, I am pretty sure it would’ve sold better than the Kona and ZSEV respectively, although lesser than ICE X1 or ICE GLA. So the ultimate conclusion is, that for Indians, powertrain doesn’t matter. If they have the money, they’ll even buy a BMW EV or Mercedes EV, just because of the “luxury brand”. And they won’t buy an EV if it’s a mainstream middle class brand. We shall see it for ourselves in the future, when eventually the luxury brands introduce more and more EVs.
there are not any brands that exist entirely in the “near-lux” or “entry-lux” segment. This segment is largely made up of the top trims of the top models from traditional carmakers, and the entry trims of the bottom models from luxury manufacturers. For example, Mercedes Benz GLA, GLB, CLA and A class can all be had for less than $40,000. These are not true luxury cars. They cost less than, and drive worse than, a well optioned Toyota Avalon, which also would have more tech features in it than those entry Mercedes. BMW has similar models in the X1 and 230i Audi has the A3 Acura the ILX Infiniti the Q50 Cadillac the CT4 and XT4 Lincoln Corsair (Lincoln only makes SUV’s now) Lexus CT, IS, and UX base models Now, mind you (and this depends a bit on the manufacturer), you can dress some of these cars up with trim and option packages, at which point they’d cross the line into “luxury” from “near lux”. For example a Base Infiniti Q50 or Lexus IS is, in my mind, and “entry lux” sedan, but the Q50 Red Sport 400 package or the IS F are “sport luxury”. Quite a bit of this, to be honest, is arbitrary.
The bases are the letters: A Class: for the hatchbacks. C Class: mid-sized luxury sedans (lowest trims). E Class: larger luxury sedans. S Class: luxury flagship of the brand. Then you have the ‘G’ which is the original version of the SUV. Add an ‘L’ to that ‘G’ (which I think stands for ‘Large’. Which creates the SUVs of those versions of cars, which start with GL. Such as the GLC Class (SUV version of the C Class), GLE, GLA, etc… In 2016 they created new cars to expand the family, introducing the S Class Coupe, GLE Coupe, GLC Coupe, E Class Coupe, and so on… They have the four door coupe versions such as the CLS and CLA. I see the CL as “Large Coupe” xD. You also have the 4Matic that can be applied to all these cars, 4Matic means four-wheel drive. You have the Maybach which is like the King S Class that competes with the Rolls Royce Phantom and whatever Bentley’s flagship is. You have AMG versions of all these models, they’re the powerful sporty versions of them. There is the AMG Line that has certain touches of the actual AMG Brand, but not the power. You have Brabus, it’s like a flashy version of their normal S Classes and G Classes. You have an ‘e’ that stands for electric, or d for diesel. Then you have the numbers beside these names, for example there is a C180, E250, S550, S600, G63, GLE4OO, etc… These stand for the Engine capacity or something, a 180 means a 1.8 Litre Engine, or 1800cc. 550 means 5.5 aka 5500cc, and so on. Usually the C ranges from 180 to 300, then jumps to the 43, 450 and 63 which are all AMG models. The S (at least in The Middle East) has 400, 500, 550, 600. The S Class Maybach is either 550 or 600. The AMGs are 63 or 65. A = 1 Series. C = 3 Series. C Coupe = 4 Series. E = 5 Series. E Coupe = 6 Series. S = 7 Series. S Coupe = Upcoming 8 Series. 4Matic = xDrive. 2WD = iDrive. CL = Grancoupe. GL = X (so X4, X6, etc). Brabus = Alpina. Maybach = Phantom. AMG = M. AMG Line = M Sport. And so on. The 3 German rivals + Lexus have similar naming styles. This is why you sometimes find a single car named something like: Mercedes GLE63 Class Coupe AMG. Or W222 Mercedes S600 Class Maybach 4Matic. Instead of a simple Honda Accord or something. I’m sure I made some minor mistakes and forgot to mention a few names, but reading this will allow you to understand the naming system more than most car guys around.
GLA - entry level, looking to get into an MB for “cheap”, but didn’t want to get a A class or CLA, ~$40k, $300/400 lease, sub compact luxury crossover SUV GLB - Also entry level but acceptable for a small family, will run you a little more $45/50k, $400/500 lease, available tiny 3rd row, updated interior, it’s “own class” of vehicle between sub compact and compact, an affordable compact luxury family suv GLC - Most popular choice, $48/55k, $400/500 lease, good size, nice quality and design, definitely would still work for a family of 4 or even just a single/couple, compact luxury crossover SUV GLC coupe - $50/55k, $450/550 lease an interesting competitor to the X4, if you wanted a GLE coupe but couldn’t afford one, or you were going to get a GLC but wanted something more interesting, “compromised” rear headroom, interesting design. GLE - A real family SUV, $500/600 lease, $50/70k if the GLC was too small but you don’t need // can’t afford a full sized third row of a GLS. Also available right third row. Bigger and more premium than a GLC, a good choice all around. A competitive alternative to the popular X5. Midsized 2-row luxury SUV GLE coupe - I’d have to say the most “bougie” MB suv you can get, only offered in AMG models. For people who want something really nice and fast but not necessarily the “mom car” GLS. Lots of people cross shop this with higher end Uber luxury SUVs. GLS - the almighty “s class” of MB suvs, a soccer moms dream vehicle, full 3 row of seats that can sit adults comfortably, if money isn’t an issue and the number of kids you have is. The biggest and the “best” around. Full sized luxury 3 row SUV.
There are some good answers though, I just provide my point of view of different car brands know in China (the Mainland) market: European: Mercedes-Benz: powerful and comfort, full-scale luxury, flawless except for the price, the new designing is attractive but it is shifting from masculine to neutral these days, drivers aged around 40-50 years old. C Class, GLA, GLC, GLE, sell the best. Audi: powerful and comfort, very easy to drive, the hanging is still “German” but the steering wheel is as mild as a Japanese car, spacious, drivers aged around 35-40 years old. Audi is the best seller luxury car brand in China, especially the A6, A4 sedan and the Q5 SUV, they are ‘rulers’ in each field. BMW: powerful and comfort, simple and tough, masculine, good at maneuverability but more affordable than Porsche, drivers aged around 25-30 years old. 3 and 5 Series sell the best. Porsche: if you are chasing for power and maneuverability, Porsche is your best choice, 911, or even Cayman and Boxter have lots of fun but in China the best sellers are Cayenne and Macan. Volkswagen: god, yeah it is god in China, VW sold 3 million cars in China per year, if you don’t know which one to buy, just buy a VW is OK. The spare parts are bloody cheap and every repair workshop knows well on how to deal with a VW. I think only in Germany and China you can see so many VWs dominant on the road. Every series sells good in China, one single model called ‘Lavida’ (a Chinese local variant based on 4th generation Jetta) sold over 400′000 in 2016. Mini: very sexy, drivers are either middle class or extremely upper class. Peugeot: better equipped Citroen, not so reliable and noisy. The 408 sells the best. Citroen: more affordable Peugeot, not so reliable and noisy, but Citroen has better chasis, especially the C5. The C4L sell the best. Renault: only Koleos makes sense… we don’ know why they design other Renaults for… Volvo: TOO EXPENSIVE! we Chinese think the interior of Volvo is unacceptable, it is about minimalism, which is not well accepted in modern China. Jaguar/Land Rover: then British but now Indian, many many problems, they were once popular for some years but now they are fading away. Aston Martin/Ferrari/Lamborghini/Bugatti/Rolls-Royce/Bentley/Spyker/Maserati/Konigsegg, etc.: fancy, but not designed for China’s road, I don’t mean our road are low quality but, I mean our road are TOO CROWDED, especially in large cities, you drive a Bugatti and enjoy an average speed of 20km/h, enjoy it! American: Ford: tough, with some level of good maneuverability, but the quality is also ‘American’, I mean, big but never delicate. Affordable though. Chevrolet: very cheap, very much underrated, GM in China put Chevrolet into a very awkward position, they don’t introduce good Chevrolet models in China, but introduce them under Buick’s plate, and make Chevrolet cheaper, and worse equipped than Buick, as if a Chevrolet is designed for a countryman live in some poor rural place, it is hard to understand, what are you thinking about, GM? Buick: in the US, Buick is designed for elder people, while in China, Buick is designed for ignorant people, period. We don’t see any advantage a Buick has, GM developed a Buick based on some Korean Daewoo models, as small as a Chevy Aveo/Sonic, as poorly equipped as a Hyundai Accent bnd still call it ‘Buick’, and call it ‘entry level luxury car’, do you think we Chinese folks are IQ50- or anything else? Cadillac: American version of BMW, or to be exact, between BMW and Audi, very good and affordable. The new CT6/CTS are killing me! Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep: problem, problem, problem… if you hate someone, you suggest him to buy a Jeep made in China. Asian: Toyota: reliable, cheap, long lasting, but… very very boring… Honda: a little bit less boring than Toyota, but still some boring… Nissan: Nissan in China sells well but the quality is not as good as Toyota/Honda. Mazda: the only Japanese car with some driving pleasure… Subaru: pleasure second to Mazda, reliability better than Mazda, very balanced. Mitsubishi/Suzuki/Isuzu: dying in China market… Lexus: Lexus sedans are still ‘Lexus’, yet some SUVs such as NX, it is hard to say, I think it intended to study from BMW but failed… also RX, I don’t think an RX is any better than a Highlander, let alone the mighty Prado. Infiniti: Japanese version of Mercedes-Benz mixed with a little BMW, good chasis, the most ‘non-Japanese’ Japanese car. I mean, very European. Accura: already dead in China market, Accura in China was even much more expensive than Mercedes-Benz, I don’t know what they are thinking, do they think we have never been to North America or do they think a Chinese can’t go to North America? Their mind is a little strange… Hyundai & KIA: if you have not so much money, and the same time you don’t want to buy China’s brands, then choose Korean… the cars are OK, but you have no ‘face’ (ego) when you drive it in China, sometimes you may be discriminated/underestimated and I’m not joking…
Are you asking how fast they can theoretically go? Or how quick they accelerate? Most Mercedes are electronically limited to around 130 MPH here in the states, but can theoretically go faster depending on the horsepower rating of the car. There’s a lot of engineering that goes into that theoretical number, but alas, you have stumbled upon the wrong user for that explanation. Now, if you were asking about how quickly they accelerate, it will again depend on the specific car. Keep in mind that all of the 0–60 MPH times are listed on their website, but Benz tends to under estimate performance numbers. For example, they posted that a 2018 C300 4MATIC will do the run in 6 seconds flat, but popular car review websites will have tests performed where it will be closer to 5.8. This is pretty rare and unusual for an auto manufacturer, as normally they will tend to over estimate numbers if anything. I would say most of our normal range cars (non AMG) will do it around 6 seconds, while the SUVs will be anywhere from 5.0–7.5s, and they are typically among the quickest examples in their class, often off by a few tenths of a second in either direction compared to the competing car in the BMW lineup. Here are some of the better examples I can think of based upon either reviews I have read or my personal times I have observed: CAR CLA 250 4MATIC 6.4 C 300 4MATIC 5.8 E 300 4MATIC 6.3–6.9 E 400 4MATIC COUPE/SEDAN 5.0–5.4 S 450 4MATIC 4.8–5.0 S 560 4MATIC 4.5 SL 550 4.3–4.5 SUV GLA 250 4MATIC 6.5–6.7 GLC 300 4MATIC 6.3–6.5 GLS 450 6.5 GLS 550 5.0–5.2 G 550 5.8
