@SynysterGraves We did one of these too. An old BMW Z1 where the doors slid down into the body. It was even more of a ballbag to do than the Lancia and we couldn’t get the parts for that 😂 https://t.co/Jhh1ffoiZ5

Review Q&A bmw z1

What car design would you like to make a return?

Toyota MR2. BMW M1. MacLaren F1. Aston Martin Vantage more like the muscly 80s. Lotus Esprit Maybe the BMW Z1, Lagonda (yeah it is amiss, but with some very strange charm), LM002, The Audi Quattro from the 80s, Datsun 240Z

Top Gear (TV series): What cars have Jeremy Clarkson owned?

I believe he also owned a BMW Z1, he's certainly a big fan of that car. Slightly off-topic but he also owns an English Electric Lightning jet fighter, non functional. He has (or at least had) it in his front garden.

Why aren't car bodies made of plastic?

They are, or at least were. Plastics: The Tortoise and the Hare The BMW Z1, Pontiac Fiero, Saturn SL1 and one or two other GM product had plastic body panels. The problem is that plastics really aren't structurally rigid enough to act as the frame, so the plastic panels are used as a skin over a frame made up of steel stampings, like this: The net result is that the frame takes up a lot of space inside the car that would otherwise be used for passenger and storage volume as the plastic skin doesnt' contribute to the strength of the vehicle. So for a given size car, you end up with a smaller interior.

What is your favorite car from the 80s?

I don’t know if I could name a favourite but if I were to have a 1980s car now, I’d like a BMW Z1. Even now it looks cool!

Why does BMW end the production of the BMW i8?

Every now and then, BMW launches a so called lighthouse project. Probably the first car which deserves this name was the BMW M1 BMW wanted to set up a separate racing series with that car, and the M1 became extremely popular. BMW made less than 500 units of ths car in 1979. This car lead to the foundation of the M Technic GmbH, the sports and racing division of BMW. M cars are special until today. The next lighthouse project was the BMW Z1 It paved the way for a new class of roadsters with high tech attitude. 8,000 were made. The successor Z3 was cheaper, more conventional and produced in a larger quantity. Z roadsters are a part of BMW since then. The third lighthouse project was the Z8 A roadster which resembled to the 1960’s with a V12 engine - a dreamcar. It reanimated the legendary 507 - and was built 5,700 times. In my eyes, the i8 is the lighthouse project of the 21st century. A stunning design, an interesting technology. The i8 paved the way for the hybrid technology in many BMW cars which were built since then.

What's the coolest feature you've seen in a car? Preferably something that isn't very common, such as the rain channels in the Mercedes S-class that channel rain from the windshield away from the side windows, & nothing related to self-driving cars.

The dropping doors on the BMW Z1. In production from March 1989 - June 1991 this car had the coolest feature that still looks awesomely unique and timeless to this day! Behold the dropping doors of the Z1, tucking into the body frame like windows, enhancing the convertible experience. (Doors in action)

What ever happened to cars with non-rusting plastic body panels?

Most of them were dumped: The East German Trabant was the best selling car with a steel frame and plastic covers on it. It was sold over three million times (basically because there were more or less no other cars to buy in the GDR). There have been some other cars which followed this principle, the BMW Z1 and the Renault Espace (first generation) come to my mind. However, this design has some shortcomings: Plastic has a different temperature coefficient than steel, so you need to leave some space between the parts in order to avoid problems with changing temperatures. And making a car in that way in really large numbers is rather expensive. The GDR did that because they had a shortage of steel sheetmetal. And fixing the parts to the car was so complicated that every Trabant had a pair of doors tailored to fit to this particular car. One big advantage is that plastic does not rust. However, if the steel structure below the plastic does rust, you can forget about that. And today there are better methods to protect steel against rust.

What car do you love but would never buy?

A friend once saved really hard and eventually bought his dream car, a BMW Z1. On his way out of the dealership, roof down, a white van man gave him the “wanker” gesture, and it burst his bubble. Three months later he traded it in. And so it is with dream cars. Owning a car that looks great in photographs and driving around in it might get you hated. So I’d never buy s Ferrari. Maybe a Dino though. Fuck the white van man.

What’s a tiny and unique sports car that I can get for cheap?

Depending on where you live, I would stick to Kei cars: Perhaps a bit bigger but a special edition MX5 Miata would fit the unique bill: Or if your budget can stretch to something a bit pricier and unique, a BMW Z1:

Where are BMW Z1's terminals located to jump-start a car?

I am confident no one has ever left the lights of a BMW Z1 on, and thought. I will ask Quora how to jump start my car. The owners manual has directions. Try reading that.
