How does the performance of a Tesla Model 3 compare with similarly priced sedans?

In terms of straight line acceleration, the Model 3 appears to be similar to the entry level "junior executive" luxury cars like like the Audi A3/S3 and BMW 2 series. The pony cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and Fore Mustang are even better. (I won't call them muscle cars anymore since the new ones are no longer just about brute straight line speed but handle exceptionally.) Elon Musk said the base model (presumably single motor) would do 0-60 mph in under 6 seconds. That's roughly on par with an Audi A3 or BMW 228i A journalist who was given a ride in a dual motor version said it felt like 4.5 seconds or similar to an S3 or M2. The Mustang and Camaro have even better performance for the money. In 2 to 3 years when the Model 3 truly reaches mass availability some of these cars will be even better than they are today. Based on my experience driving my dad's 85D and my modified 135i (both cars are about the same 0-60), the Tesla will be faster off the line with, say, a quicker 0-30 time. The instant torque of an electric car at zero RPM is remarkable. This is where the Model 3 will shine. We don't know much about the specs of the Model 3 so the rest of this is speculative. The cornering of the Model 3 may not be as good the Germans much less the Americans. The Model 3 will likely be made with a steel chassis to save cost. The S is made with weight saving aluminum and yet it's still heavy for its class because of the batteries. On a track the S can't be driven all out for more than a few minutes. The batteries overheat. There's no reason to suggest the Model 3 will be different. Elon did say the next presentation of the Model 3 will show off "next level" stuff. Maybe they have some things up their sleeve with respect to weight savings or handling. In sum, for regular street driving the Model 3 will feel pretty darn quick.

Is Tesla really a low-quality car?

Well, it depends on what you mean by “quality”. If by quality you mean “reliability” then Teslas are very high quality. Much higher reliability than many of their German or American counterparts. For example, a friend of mine bought a 2017 X5 and the radio stopped working because the windshield leaked water behind the console. The reliability of Teslas has been by-and-large quite good. Maybe not as good as some of the Japanese brands, but overall quite good. If by quality you mean “technology” then again, Tesla is leading the way. They have developed battery tech, self-driving features, and in-cabin tech that other manufacturers are struggling to catch up with. The model 3 for instance has as nice an audio system as the B&O system in Audis (which is a $6k upgrade) If by quality you mean “nicest materials” I’d say Tesla is not leading the market in this space. A $65k BMW will have nicer leather and plastics. But Tesla has chosen to focus on sustainability, using recycled materials where possible. And they feel nice. If by quality you mean “fit and finish” here again, the German and Japanese brands do much better. Panel gaps on the Model3 are not wonderful, and the paint seems like it’s as thin as paper and flaky as biscuit dough … but after a couple months of ownership, I’ve had no squeaks or rattles. Not something I could say of my friend’s Porsche Cayman, which took 3 trips to the dealer to sort out a squeak. So in short, I’d say the Tesla is a very high quality car. It’s fun to drive, made of nice enough materials, has cool tech, and generally feels quite solidly built. Would I swap my 3DP for an M2? Hell naw!

Which brand of car is better, Mercedes or BMW?

If it were the good old days, there would have been a definite answer, but things have changed now. Both of these automakers are at the top of their game,. Both of these brands offer tech that's yet to be seen in other manufacturer’s vehicles (with the exception of Audi, which stands in the competition). So instead of trying to state which is better, ,I'll, ,illuminate the unique features of both the brands along with their design ethos. BMW This ,Bavarian car maker, started out to make the best driver's cars. Their tagline states “,The ultimate driving machine,” to this day and with good reason. The ,Brand's emphasis has always been on the driving experience,. The fine tuning of the chassis, the supple yet sporty suspension setups along with aggressive looking body work are all a typical BMW affair Th,at's, the 2016 BMW 320d. A classic example of typical BMW design. The ,interiors are premium, but are just not at the level of Mercedes Benz,. This is more evident when you look at the 3-series (F30) and the C-Class (w205). The ,design is much sportier, to accentuate the appeal of a driver's car. A regular BMW 320d with the “M”-sport package. The lines are sharp with the design more angular than Mercedes Benz. Recently, BMW took shine to the new “,Layered design,” philosophy that received mixed reactions. BMW’s “,M,” division made some of the best driver's cars in the past, however, ,that's not the case anymore,. With the exception of the M2,, the cars have grown heavier with the downsizing of the engines and the addition of a turbocharger that resulted in more lag than top end performance. BMW has an independent electric hybrid model range,. The i3 and the more expensive i8. These eHybrids come with futuristic design language and give good fuel consumption efficiency. BMW also worked on ,battery powered keys,. This is first seen on the ,BMW i8,, and then trickled down to the ,new 7-series,. I agree, for an enthusiast, this is nothing but a gimmick, but the regular consumer base shows great response to stuff like that. Mercedes Benz This brand was the one ,responsible for the invention of a motor powered car,. (Ford Model T was the first mass produced vehicle). These manufactures have so many industry firsts under their belt. MB’s tagline “,the best or nothing,” should give an insight on how this car maker operates. The ,body and the chassis along with the suspension is setup for ride quality & comfort rather than outright driving dynamics,. The ,body work, is much more refined and stately, with ,soft swathing lines all over. The Mercedes Benz C -class (w205) Mercedes Benz takes the cake where the interiors are concerned,. BMW vs Mercedes Benz, typical cabins. Best in class finishes without skimping on premium materials (like metal, wood and leather). ,The attention to detail is much better than a BMW,. This interior ,invokes a sense of occasion every time you step in,. Sadly, the same can't be said for BMW. The design R&D at Mercedes Benz took to a new form, with those ,Coupè-ish lines and less angular bits to accentuate the length and width of the car,. The 2017 Mercedes Benz C-Class, E - Class and the S - Class. Good luck figuring out which is which. This swelte frame design was well received, albeit ,making the model differentiation that much difficult for the masses. Mercedes’s “,AMG,” division ,never set out to make the best driver's cars. They just wanted to make their standard models more exciting to drive and to look at,. I'd say that ,the in-house tuning firm accomplished just that,. I mean, you don't need a 612ps V8 Luxury sedan (,2017 Mercedes Benz E63 AMG s,), but you would want one, wouldn't you ? Mercedes Benz ,does not have a standalone hybrid range,, but offers an option of Hybrid powerplants in some countries with their higher end sedans (the C200, E320 and the S320 BlueEFFICIENCY models). They also ,made the completely electric SLS AMG, ,E-cell ,that runs on four individual electric motors (one per wheel) alone, Mercedes Benz ,pioneered safety features like SONAR, nightvision using IR, Pre-SAFE assist, active brake assist, lane monitoring, radar assisted cruise control, and many more. BMW,,, in all its glory, doesn't come with this kind of tech. To conclude, Mercedes Benz is a better owner's car while BMW is a better driver's car. The difference of how much better the BMW is to drive over Mercedes Benz is negligible, ,in current times but the tech Mercedes Benz packs in, by any means, is not“negligible”. Which is better ? You be the judge.

Can electric cars go as fast as a gas powered one?

Yes, depending on the make and model. Most EVs excel at “jack rabbit” starts because electric motors with no transmission provide full torque to the wheels instantaneously. Only EVs designed with performance in mind (i.e., Teslas) can sustain that advantage for a quarter mile or more. Model S Performance w/ Ludicrous Mode: 2.4s 0–60 mph Model 3 Performance: 3.2s 0–60 mph 2020 Roadster: 1.9s 0–60 mph; 8.8s 1/4 mile; 250+ mph top speed Even EVs with motors and batteries designed for high performance will hit a wall when driven hard for an extended period of time due to battery overheating. Tesla’s Model 3 Performance has made some significant strides in addressing this limitation. Tesla Model 3 with Track Mode takes on the Nurburgring with BMW M2 Competition I would not be surprised if Tesla completely eliminates this limitation in the 2020 Roadster by the time it hits the market. Then, I would expect their advances in battery efficiency, cooling, and management to filter down to future refreshes of the Performance versions of their other models. Of course, there is a huge difference between straight line speed and acceleration and driving fast, unless you do all your driving on a drag strip. Personally, I own a 2017 Tesla Model S 90D. My previous car was a BMW M3. I find my Tesla to be faster and every bit as much fun to drive as my M3 — even more so when I account for the sheer pleasure I get in observing my Tesla get more capable and smarter after every frequent (every month or so) software update. https://qr.ae/TWGqtg

Why shouldn't I buy a Tesla Model S?

Here are some reasons. Not all of them make complete sense) You don't like the way it looks. The cost to purchase is prohibitive. You don't like the way it drives. You think it will get hacked and / or give you brain cancer due to it's wireless telecommunications systems, and will drive your 1971 International Scout until used parts are no longer available for it. Ever since you saw a Mini-E 6 years ago (or BMW 1 series Active-E 4 years ago, or a BMW i3 a year ago) and really want a small, funky but cool looking electric car like that! You hate the planet and feel that driving a Tesla Model S will be at odd with your hatred. It isn't loud enough. You like the (Nissan Leaf, Fiat 500e, Kia Soul EV, etc.) better. You need or want the utility of a truck. You do not have a place to charge it often enough for it to be convenient to operate. Two people in your neighborhood already have a Tesla Model S and you do not want to be a 'me too' kind of person. You love the smell of gasoline / oil. You need or want the capability of an off-road vehicle. You have to drive more than 250 - 300 miles at a time and do not want to stop at a dedicated charging station for an extended time to let the car recharge, as opposed to a 5 minute stop at a relatively common gas station. You like driving a manual transmission car. You feel that Tesla has not / will not make enough money in order to stay in business and therefore service the car, or that if the company goes out of business your resale value will plummet. You would rather spend $140,000 on a Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 SUV because of the sound that the doors make when you close them. Lithium-Ion batteries make you sad because they remind you that Kurt Cobain had passed away. You feel that in buying an ICE car you will be saving (insert country here) jobs because the limited amount of service a Tesla requires will reduce the demand for car mechanics. You want to buy a (insert country here) made car. You are a massive Initial D fan and feel that if electric cars take over there will be no more gas stations for Japanese youth to get part-time jobs in while they dream of togue runs You have a problem with Elon Musk. You want to be able to go to a 'dealership' and buy a new car now, as opposed to waiting months to be able to buy one. (Also applies to some other high demand vehicles. See Range Rover Autobiography, Ford Mustang GT350R or BMW M2) You are old school and think that getting more performance from your car via an 'app update' is lame.

Why do people buy a sports car that costs more than a Tesla when a Tesla can easily beat it in performance?

There are a category of automotive enthusiasts that are sometimes referred to as “petrolheads” or “gearheads,” and we should note that they definitely would never call themselves “electroheads.” The allure has to do with the characteristics of an internal combustion engine (ICE) and the vehicles they power: the sound of it, the mechanical nature of it, the malleability of it, the uniquely challenging driving experience, among many other similar attributes. After decades of experience with ICE powered vehicles, it has a certain patina of familiarity and comfort that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) just do not, at least not yet. When you worked with your father to fix up that junker car into a fairly interesting ‘pseudo-racer’, it pulls at specific emotional heartstrings that are hard to reproduce later in life in a BEV whose power plant seems so unalterable. That unalterable nature of modern BEVs also rankles at mechanically minded Do-It-Yourself-ers, who appreciated the adaptability of older ICE vehicles (and similarly bemoan how very modern ICE vehicles are increasingly difficult for them to modify.) So, in short, the appeal of ICE vehicles is largely emotional, and an appeal to Do-It-Yourself types that do not appreciate BEVs, at least not yet. 1968 Shelby Cobra GT350 Edit,: if you doubt Tesla’s credibility as a sports car, you might take a look at the following video which is quite entertaining. In this video, a Tesla goes against a BMW M2 Competition, which is meant as a return to BMW’s roots of sports performance, and is very successful at that. The Tesla holds its own.

Aren’t lithium batteries in electric cars more toxic to the environment than the fumes put out by gas cars?

CO2, water vapor, hydrocarbons, particulates and NOx you mean - not ‘fumes’. Here’s a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of automotive batteries. Basically, batteries are fully recyclable. The question then becomes what sort of ‘fumes’ the recycling process produces rather than any solid waste problem. Life Cycle Analysis Summary for Automotive Lithium-Ion Battery Production and Recycling The biggest issue with battery powered vehicles is shortage of Lithium. A 100 kWh battery in a Tesla weighs 540 kg and older chemistry needs 420 kg of lithium metal in its manufacture. There are 1.1 billion motor vehicles in the world. Thus 462 billion kg of lithium metal are needed to replace all of these. Unfortunately, humanity produces 600 million kg per year of the metal. So, supplies are woefully inadequate. Even advanced Lithium batteries which needs only 16 k of lithium metal 17.6 billion kg of lithium metal. Still 29.3x the amount of Lithium produced - but we’re moving in the right direction. Put another way 83 million motor vehicles are produced each year and there is only enough lithium available to produce 1.3 million vehicles per year - even if all lithium were used for vehicles (its not). Even with advanced batteries with only 16 kg per battery 37.5 million vehicles are the limit with our current production. Similar analysis can be done for Cobalt Nickel and other metals. This fundamental shortage of lithium is the reason companies like Mercedes, BMW Toyota and Honda have focused on hydrogen powered cars. Some use fuel cells, others just burn hydrogen in a petrol engine which is an easy conversion. Conventional Hydrogen Now, if hydrogen is produced by the pyrolysis of methane we are limited to 603.2 million tons of hydrogen made from 2.4128 billion tons of methane each year, if methane were used for nothing else. Unfortunately, this is only half the 1.23 billion tons of hydrogen needed to fuel the 1.1 billion vehicles. https://www.eia.gov/analysis/studies/transportation/scenarios/pdf/globaltransportation.pdf Super Batteries Now, one obvious solution to supply batteries is to use other energetic ions besides lithium. The manufacture of each would have to be looked at in detail. This is an area of rapid development and I am not up to speed. Since it is also an area of some secrecy (think of Coca Cola’s secret recipe) scientists who work in the area aren’t rushing to publish important results. So, there is a fair bit of guessing - and mistakes about where the industry might go. By the way, I am updating my earlier reply since someone who knows more of this topic than I at the moment, was kind enough to inform me that using older lithium ion chemistries over-states the lithium required. They were right! Types of Lithium-ion Batteries Here is a cell mass break down of a type listed in sales literature for Tesla as NCA I have yet to look up all the details but obviously the amount of Lithium is reduced from earlier estimates. However, even with a radical improvement of use from 420 kg to 16 kg per battery, lithium is still in short supply. Unconventional Hydrogen One solution is to use sunlight and rain water to make 26 kg/m2 using my company’s high efficiency solar panels White Paper to Mok- FINAL-1 I am happy to enter long-term off take contracts with credit worthy buyers who wish to buy significant quantities of hydrogen. I am willing to give substantial discounts on these contracts on a heat value basis. Funds will be used to create a project company that supplies the hydrogen called for.
