Review Q&A bmw m3 redline

How did you choose the last car you bought?

I had a Honda S2000 I drove for the typical three years. That car was nuts- nearly 50/50 weight distribution, 9k RPM redline, 6 gears with a short shifter, fastest up/down convertible top on the market, a 2 litre motor producing 240 HP for a car that weighed practically nothing. It was a go-kart on steroids. The digital tachometer was formula one inspired, along with the sweet red push-button start. Everything in the dash was minimal and driver centered. The car had only the essentials and nothing more. Not even a radio clock. Time didn't matter when you drove this machine. But as I got older, it became tough to squeeze in and out of this pocket sized two seater. I still wanted sporty, but perhaps something with a back seat this time. I dreamt of a BMW. More specifically an M3. What 20 something doesn't. But my bank account suggested I join everyone on planet earth and buy something I can afford. So what's the closest feel I can get to a BMW without breaking the bank? An Infiniti G35, coupe. 298HP at that time was no joke. The M3 put out 333HP. I was so close! Before I offend any BMW drivers with my Infiniti comparison, I'm aware that BMW is the ultimate driving machine and it's not a slogan they take lightly. But for the guy who couldn't afford that e46 M3, that G35 6speed was a damn close second. Now I drive a Schwinn bicycle because LA traffic has conquered me.

What's the fastest (in MPH) you've ever gone in your BMW?

I had a 1998 BMW M3. I had modified the emc to remove the speed limiter, increase the rev redline, and modify the spark advance. One early Sunday morning I wanted to see how fast it would go. There was no traffic at that hour and the car hit 150 before I saw any cars. I backed off then. Car felt perfectly safe.

Would a vehicle automatically reduce in speed if two of the regular cylinders suddenly became ineffective?

Yes, it happened to me 10 years ago, driving an BMW M3 E92. I was cruising at 64.97 mph on the interstate when suddenly it bonged, a message came up “limp mode / reduced power / possible to drive on / contact your service asap” (I have the message somewhere). The car dropped from 420hp to something that felt like 42hp, refused to rev beyond 3,000 (redline 8,400), not using 1’st gear, and super slow/laggy changing gears (DCT gearbox). I drove the car to the service center (directly) and got there with no issue, other than below average acceleration out of intersection (so somewhat painful to drive). No smoke or bad sounds came from the engine. Next day i was informed that one of the titanium lifters / valve / spring had broken and needed replacement. Took a few more days and got the car back. Do not think there was any damages to the engine as it was disabling fuel injection / ignition on said cylinder + additional engine management to prevent high revving). If by ineffective you mean a valve dropping and falling into the cylinder … not so much :)

How do you persuade a teenager that the sports car he wants is too dangerous?

I would have been that teenager who would’ve wanted the sports car that I wasn’t ready for. I was crazy about cars for longer than I can remember so I can truly sympathize with your teenager, but I also raised two teens so I can understand a parents perspective too. Let’s assume the object of his desire is a Mustang GT. There are endless videos of Mustang crashes on YouTube. Crashes in ditches, spin out crashes, racing crashes. My son and I used to watch them together. I would often comment that is way too much car for these young kids, they don’t have enough experience or maturity to handle them. My lectures were in between videos so less annoying, I hope. But I would find time for the ‘kid who wants the Mustang’ to spend as much time as he could behind the wheel taking defensive driving classes, autocross training, stick shift classes… whatever you can find for him. And if you are able to buy him a car get him something interesting, but less powerful. My son would’ve loved a BMW M3. But he might not have survived it. I found him a 318i 4 cylinder WAY less powerful but if he squinted, kind of the same look. He busied himself dreaming of more powerful engine swaps, body work upgrades, and removing the muffler for better sound. That kept us sane for a couple years as he gained more driving experience and maturity. It’s also which kid wants the car. I KNEW my son would push the limits of any car he had. My daughter however, never wanted to drive, but now that she has her license I see some of my DNA in her, she LOVES to drive— but she is also responsible and has no desire to see what redlining her engine feels like. That last part is definitely her dad ; ) Good luck, I don’t think you’ll persuade him not to want it, but you can keep him busy with another car, give him opportunities to gain experience, and hopefully buy some years until he gets more mature. Good luck!

What would you choose between an M3, a Cayman, or a Corvette?

The BMW M3. (E90 generation- the only M3s with V8 engines.) Sure, the Cayman is a Porsche car, but I always thought of it as someone-who-wants-a-911-but-can’t-afford-it type of car. And the boxer-6 was dropped in favour of a boxer-4 for the 2017 model range. And its tail-lights look like squinting Asian eyes. The Corvette is a great “muscle-ish” car, but the LS engine it uses is too common in engine swaps, and revs lower than the E90’s V8. I never liked American muscle/pony/sports cars anyway. IMO, the C6 has the front of a Honda S2000, the sides of the first-gen NSX, and the headlight shape of a DC5 Integra. So I’ll be taking the E90 M3 (you never said what generation it was… haha) And like the tuning enthusiast that I am… here’s my MOD LIST! BMW M-Performance or Armytrix Exhaust (can’t decide lol) Liberty Walk front bumper splitter (painted) Full-size and full-spec BMW M brakes from the top-spec 2018 M5 (painted) Gauges for engine oil temp, RPM, throttle percentage, gear selected 2x Team Sundown 18-inch subwoofers with ported enclosure in the boot, with matching amplifiers that can allow the subs to stretch their legs as far as they’ll go Dinan E90 M3 P2/S2 Signature Package, with 8500rpm redline Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres (all 4 corners) with painted MICHELIN tyre wall text SSD GTX-01 rims, colour matching the paint Matte Turqoise paint (Full-surface exterior) Fully stock interior apart from the gauges Painted pedals and gear knob Aftermarket Suspension from PP-Performance for fast cornering and track racing. M3 any day… but if the Mercedes-AMG C63 was offered in the choices, I’d take it and customize it too. But for now, I’ll create my M3.

What is your favorite 80s car model?

BMW E30 M3. Raw, raucous, utterly ridiculous for a German luxury car maker to produce, the E30 M3 A brilliant chassis, proper flares, 7,000rpm redline, and room for four, the E30 M3 is definitely a top candidate in the running for quintessential everyday sports car. For more info:,BMW M3 E30: the M essence

What is the difference between torque, horse power and RPM?

Torque is the ability of the engine to do work (remember from physics that work is force x distance) and horsepower is the rate at which it can do work (power is the rate of work, over time). So what does this actually mean in the context of a car? Think of the engine as a crank. If you have a long lever that you can turn, it's easier to turn it (e.g. you have more leverage). That's more torque. If the engine has more torque, it can turn the crankshaft despite more resistance. This is great for SUVs and trucks, since they are typically designed to tow heavy loads. However, to make the car go really fast, you need to turn the crank really quickly. So here, horsepower matters more. When people talk about sports cars, they talk about horsepower more than torque (although these days some cars have a lot of both). You can have a smaller lever arm here so you can turn the crank faster, and the result is an engine with higher horsepower and lower torque. The naturally aspirated S65 BMW M3 engine is an example of this. It has 420HP but only 290lb-ft torque. It's not great for towing, but the engine can go all the way to 8300rpm before it redlines and that's pretty sick.

What do you do to save gas while driving?

I drive a BMW M3. I try to “save gas” only when I’m running low on gas and there isn’t a Costco nearby. Being a manual definitely has it’s perks here. These are some things I do. 1) No revving past 3k rpm. Absolutely no redlining. 2) Skip gears. 1 to 3 and 6 directly. 3) Turn on the “Auto start/stop” button. 4) Try being in 6th as much as possible. Downshift only for stops or turns. 5) Make turns without having to slow down as much as possible(acceleration = fuel burnt). The good handling and relatively higher torque means I don’t need to slow down a lot but can also be in a higher gear for after the turn. 6) No rev matching while shifting down. 7) Brake early or coast to stop if possible. 7) Drive 5mph under the limit or at most at the limit. 8) Let the straight-piped 350z win the traffic light drag race. 9) Let the Prius win the traffic light drag race. 10) Oh, did I mention? No redlining.

BMW E46 M3 or E39 M5?

I own an E39 M5 and an E36 M3 Euro (close to E46 M3). Both manual transmission, both pulls hard from 3000 rpm to redline, both very exciting to drive. The DSC on the M5 help to control the higher torque and horsepower. They’re completely two different cars so it really depends on when/how you’re gonna drive it. My M3 is on low setting coilover suspension so I use it when we track, drive on winding roads and car meets. I love the four doors of the M5 and big trunk space. It’s great for out of town drives (highway racing) with friends and family.

How does the BMW M3 compare to the 335?

As a 335i owner who's driven the M3, I'd say that the 335 definitely has its advantages, but if someone offered me an M3 for my 335, I'd swap them in a heartbeat. My take is: Like some have said here already, the 335 has a lot more low end torque. This translates into more usable power in every day driving, where you'll rarely go over 5000 RPM. Another perk that the 335 has over the M3 is the ease of performance modifications. Because it's a turbocharged engine, gains in the 40-80 hp range can be had with a simple chip. Throw in some new filters and intakes, and you can easily have a 400 hp BMW with just a few extra hundred dollars. That's more than a 30% increase! You'll easily spend three to four times that amount to get those gains from an M3. That's pretty much it as far as what the 335 has over the M3, everything else is, in my opinion, not really that much of a perk if you're a car person who can afford both these cars. Mileage is better with the 335, makes a lot of sense considering that it uses a smaller engine and you don't need to rev it as much. But come on, these are $40,000+ cars, unless you have a really long commute every day, fuel cost savings are negligible. The M3 on the other hand, ,feels, special. The handling, the loud V8 noise that demands that you push it (no cruising around at 3000 RPM here, redline it!), and not to mention the cool buttons you can push to make the suspension tighter and DCT gearbox shift faster. Make no mistake, posers might drive this car, but it isn't a poser car; you can geek out on so many things with the M3. I actually disagree with Reilly, cruising around with the lazy power than the 335 offers is ,very, different from the classic M3 experience of high-revving engines, which the current generation definitely has, albeit in much heavier clothes. In short, if you love cars and have an extra $15,000, you'd be silly to not take the M3.
