Review Q&A bmw x5 rims

What is the weirdest engine swap ever?

You may think that… Oh, that’s just a ,BMW X5,. With custom rims and bodykits. But wait, look inside the hood… Lies a, race-winning Le Mans BMW V12 LMR engine. Whaaaaaatttt???? BMW X5 LM ,was a totally weird-yet-cool example of how ,weird ,and creative engine swaps can be. ,Why in the heaven’s name they did that?? BMW just took out the 5.9L V12, 700-horsepowered S70/3 engine from the LMR (yet, still has some relation with the McLaren F1’s S70/2 engine) and literally just put it into a X5. Or we can say, ,forced ,it to fit inside the X5. And it worked! It lapped 7 minutes and 50 seconds on the Nordschleife. That’s two seconds ,faster ,than Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. That’s ,weird ,but ,so fricking cool ,at the same time.

What are the external differences between the BMW X5M and X5 M Sport?

Very few. The BMW X5 M is an M-performance offering, meaning it comes with all the extreme parts at the manufacturer’s disposal as stock. ,This would include 20″ inch diamond cut alloy rims, the carbon fibre front splitter, and a more aggressive bodywork all around. The ,2016 BMW X5 M The X5 M-Sport however, is a different story. This variant (the X530d M-Sport) doesn't come with the same firepower of its elder cousin, but it sure gets the looks. The ,2016 BMW X530d M-Sport. The M-Sport variants are accessorised with the M-Performance parts (exterior body work). With that being said, ,the X5 M-Sport doesn't come with jutted out fenders or the twin barrel exhaust tips. The front and rear bumpers are relatively inconspicuous. The front doesn't come with a carbon fibre splitter. The car rides a tad bit higher than the X5M. This also doesn't get the same 20″ inch rims. Those should pretty much sum up the exterior differences in between these two. 2016 BMW X5 M 2016 BMW X530d M-Sport. Hope this helps. Thanks for the A2A. Cheers !

What are the consequences of increasing a car's wheel size from, say, 16" to 17" or 18"?

Back in the day, that was called a "Plus One" (or "Plus Two") conversion. Here's the thing: when you do that, you need to maintain the same tire circumference that you started with (plus or minus a reasonable delta) or many, many things can break. In the old days, it was just the speedometer would be "off" - speed indicated would be off from actual road speed. If the speedo was "optimistic" that meant you'd be passed by little old ladies driving Buick station wagons; if it went the other way, well, you ,wouldn't, be passed by the highway patrol... On modern vehicles, you can impact the traction control, vehicle stability control, cruise control, ABS, and a variety of other systems you don't even know exist. In the process of doing a ,PAX Conversion, on my 2007 Honda Odyssey, we broke a bunch of stuff - just by changing rims and tires. Anyway, to preserve rolling circumference, you have to reduce the rolling section of the tire - this is much of what ,Twyla Naythias, is talking about. Let's take a look at your tire size. Let's say that it's 225/65-16. That means the tread width is 225mm, and the rim diameter is 16. The section height - the distance from the rim to the tread is 65% of 225 - or about 147mm. So, you're overall diameter is 2 * 147 + 16 * 25.4, or 699mm, which means the circumference of the tire, mounted is 2196mm, or about 86 1/2 inches. Cool. So, when you go up a rim size, you need to figure out what size tire you need - and you can guarantee that it's going to have a smaller section number, because you're sucking up some of the overall diameter with rim, versus tire. That's not all bad - shorter section height tires are much more responsive if you're driving in a spirited manner - the rim turns, and there's less sidewall that has to respond before the tread starts to turn. The downside, there's less sidewall cushioning the suspension from road impact, which means the ride will feel slightly harsher (potentially MUCH harsher, depending on other factors). You can adjust this slightly by moving to a wider tread, but that has to fit under the fenders of you car, so there are clear limits there as well. The other thing to consider is that you might move from a reasonably priced mid-market conventional all-season tire into specialty territory. Take my Land Rover Discovery, for example. The stock tire is a 255/65-16. That's a mid-market size, you can get tires down to about $80 per rim, from a variety of manufacturers. It's a stock size on hundreds of vehicles, there's a lot of demand, hence a lot of supply. On the other hand, if you opted for the factory 18" rim upgrade, you wind up with a 255/55-18. There are two vehicles that have that. Land Rover, and the BMW X5. Can you see what's coming next? Yeah. The tires start at $200 a rim.... If you're considering such a move, there are some resources that can help. The nice folks at ,The Tire Rack, and ,Discount Tire, have on-line shopping that can help you pick a set that fits. Enter your ZIP code, year, make and model, and select "wheel and tire packages" and they'll show you your options. I'd use that to get an idea of what works, and what it could cost you. When it comes time to buy, I'd be looking for a local, family owned and operated tire store with a long history in the area, and drop in for a chat. Tell them what you're looking for, show them what you've found, and let them work with you. You'll need hands-on to get this right, and you'll want to be able to work with them if it doesn't work out for you.

Do mechanics recommend buying used tires or should you always buy new ones?

There was an interesting sidebar during a Canadian test of winter tires last winter. The usual finding, of course, was that winter tires offer vastly superior traction to the performance of all seasons tires on ice. The new bit, though, was that ,even worn winter tires, outperform summer tires on ice. Most new BMWs are leased. BMW changes wheel sizes with annoying regularity. The winter tires and rims for a 2015 5-series will not fit the equivalent 2019 model. BMW uses run-flat tires which do not withstand removal and re-installation. This creates a surplus of winter tire/wheel sets with little wear on them. New ones would cost $3600, but used sets trade for $1200. I bought a set of Michelin winter tires (on new steel wheels) off a Camry for our Lexus es for $500. I don’t think they had a thousand miles on them. The set (aftermarket mag wheels and Goodyears) for my Porsche Cayenne came off a leased Cayenne and cost $850. The set (steel wheels) for our Scion xB came off a Honda Civic (5-bolt sports model) and cost $375. None of these used tires has failed, even though the ones on the Scion are quite old. There is an important caveat in the purchase of used tires, though. ,Run-flats don’t stand re-installation., I learned this the hard way after I bought a $500 set of Pirelli winter tires off a BMW X5. My son switched them onto his Porsche Cayenne and removed them in spring. No problem. Then I landed the job of getting them re-installed the following fall. No installer would touch them. Cracks on the interior lining made the new-seeming tires utterly worthless. Every tire guy (and I tried all of them) said the same thing: “They won’t hold air.” I had to spring for a new set of winter tires. If you want to buy used tires advantageously, buy rims and all, and avoid run-flats if you can.

What are the best modifications to make an SUV (BMW x5, range rovers, Honda CR V, Jeeps, etc.) more resistant to pothole damage while still looking more or less stock?

The single most thing you could do, and wouldn't be very noticeable, is increase the tire profile. Reduce the tire size and increase the profile so that the taller tires will absorb the pot holes and not the rims. Check with sites on line or tile dealers on what size changes you can make without changing the total diameter. I did this on my Grand Cherokee, changing from 245R75 to something like 265R70 (don’t have the car with me at the moment.

Is it normal for a set of tires on a Mercedes-Benz GL 350 (2013) to last merely 10,000 miles, or should they be lasting longer?

I have an '09 ML550, which is similar enough to make some comparisons. First off, Contis have an unfortunate reputation for wearing quickly. My first two sets lasted not much longer than yours, although they were sport tires on 20-inch rims and the 550 has significantly more power than the 350, so I would expect faster tire wear. Yours should certainly do a lot better than that. I currently run Pirelli all-weather tires which seem to be wearing much better. They are also quite a bit cheaper. Interestingly on the BMW X5 I had before (also with 20-inch wheels), I ran Nokian WR all-weathers and they had terrific wear. I didn't record exactly how much, but it seems to me they went well over 40,000 miles. My wife had Michelins on her BMW and they lasted well, too, even though it was an M series car which she drove like a maniac. Bottom line: if you are getting only 10,000 miles a set, there is something wrong, for sure. Since you say you keep the pressures correct and don't drive like an idiot, the only thing I can think of is that your alignment is out. Try getting all four wheels aligned and see if that makes a difference.

How did you choose the last car you bought?

I defined my budget, needs, & wants. Needs: Capacity. Wagon or SUV. Fuel Economy. 20mpg or higher. AWD. Comfortable driving position/dashboard. Tires with large sidewalls to handle city driving without lots of bent rims. Wants: Speed. Inline 6 engine. Leather interior. I started searching and I came across several contenders. The first being 2011–2015 Volvo XC60 & V70 T6. The next being a 2008–2010 BMW 535 Touring. The last being a 1999–2010 BMW X5 3.0. I found a used car dealer with several similar cars available. 2011 Volvo S60 T6, 2010 BMW 535, a 2008 BMW X5 3.0, & a XC90 T6. I test drove all of them back to back with my wife & we took copious notes. I could settle for the Volvo, but the BMW felt much much better as the driver even if I didn’t care for the X-Drive shifter. I started searching online and researching common issues with each one. I secured financing with my bank & added an aftermarket warranty (after thorough research). I determined what color exterior & interior I wanted. I started searching… and quickly realized that there was nothing available within 500 miles of my house. So I expanded my internet search and finally came across a 2008 BMW 535 Touring near my father’s house. So I called them up, negotiated the price down, put down a deposit, hired a top rated BMW mechanic in that area to perform a prepurchase inspection, bought a plane ticket, and asked my wife to drop me off at the airport and then asked my father to pick me up at the airport and drop me off at the dealership. There were some small issues that had to be fixed, but even after that was complete along with the aftermarket warranty, I was still solidly below blue book value as it was exhibiting signs of wastegate flutter (common problem as I had researched). Very happy with it every day. The warranty through Route 66 has covered several failures so far and I still have over a year left of low cost high performance.

How do I reduce the bumpy ride in my BMW X5 2011 model?

Put the optional smaller diameter 19″ wheels with the taller tyres on if you have it specc’d for the 20 or 21 inch rims. Other than that, not a lot. Most of those type of cars have a shit ride because they have overly stiff springs to help manage the body roll inherent on a vehicle with an overly high centre of gravity. Like most SUV’s they still lose control and roll over when an inattentive and poorly trained driver is startled, decelerates and swerves, but not as much…
