Hello there, Ohh it s a toughie, but I will give you my list - some from the beginning of the decade (and technically late 1970’s cars) and some from the end (so technically 1990’s cars) BUT 1980’s introductions so here we go. (1) Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0 Garrett Turbo the last GTV, made in South Africa in the 1980’s from CARBON STEEL thus making them immortal, RHD and manual. Drop dead gorgeous, and blindingly fast ! (2) Alfa Romeo Sprint A very 1980’s Alfa, but deeply attractive in a chunky way. 33/Sud mechanicals, but deeply attractive, and huge fun to drive (3) Alfa Romeo 164 Introduced in 1989, this was and is a big sexy beast - the V6 and the Twinsparks were awesome ! (4) Delorean DMC-12 Underwhelming in the engine department, but drop dead gorgeous. When fitted with a flux-capacitor and a Mr. Fusion, will allow you to go back in time….a real 1985′er. The reason why you had to hit 88 mph to travel in time was because the Californian CAFE-regulation 1970’s Fuel-Crisis speedo’s ended at 85 mph ! Its a very car-guy joke - never mind that the movie cars had European km/h speedos good for over 120 mp/h, that is by-the-by. (5) Volkswagen Passat Mk. II Whats not often appreciated about this is that it was a big car ! Its really good looking in S/W, sedan and best of all fastback form. As a 1.8 with the long-stroke engine, and a 5 speed manual, even in station-wagon form, this was a fast car, easily able to humble a Ford Mustang, as my dad did one day repeated times. With the Audi 2.5 5 cylinder and syncro (4x4) these where essentially sedan/SW/fastback four door versions of the next car on my list - a tasty proposition then and now. It’s sports-car form is the next entry, in fact : (6) Audi Quattro This is the one I like best - long wheelbase, essentially a high tech VW Passat sportscar - a rally winner, and really good looking too ! These are the ones I like best, my 2c worth.
If they have I doubt they are being sold in the US. About the only decent and or unique van they made was the syncro. That would be the 4x4 version. Watch the Kombi adventure on youtube where they made a trip from the tip of South America to Alaska in a kombi which is simply just an old vw bus. 10 times they had to pull that engine and rebuild it. I expect that any bus made today would be somewhat more stout or nobody would buy it. Here in the US you can get a van with a very stout diesel engine that will last a very long time and has very good performance. VW would have a tough time in this market especially considering their reputation among mechanics. By that I mean I know mechanics that will work on anything except newer Volkswagons.
