Review Q&A nissan snorkel

What happens if an electric vehicle drives through a lot of water in an off-road scenario?

They ARE going to make electric 4x4 vehicles that will handle that sort of thing quite well, generally it will be easier than for the fossil fuel burners and they wont need a snorkel. Until they make an electric 4x4 designed to handle that sort of thing I wouldn’t recommend trying it, you don’t really want water damage ruining a car. They are in fact going to make electric vehicles to fill every need currently filled by fossil fuel burners, it is coming, very soon. By 2023 GM will have 30 different models of electric vehicles (according to an announcement by them). Nissan has already announced a CUV based on the 2018 model Leaf. All sorts of cars, vans, pick-ups, SUVs, CUVs, 4x4s, etc will be released over the next 10 years.

What are some symptoms of a failing IAC valve in a 2002 Nissan Frontier 2.4 liter?

The Idle Air valve on your particular Nissan is frequency controlled. If I remember correctly it is ground controlled by the PCM. The symptoms would be very high idle or very low to the point of stalling. But I would first check the intake snorkel as they tend to crack. I also would clean the throttle body first before condemning the IAC. Take it off and block off the hole with your hand. The engine should still run…barely. If the idles is still high you have a vacuum leak post throttle body.

What is the point of lifting a car if it just makes its ride and reliabity worse?

I lived in WA (Western Australia) and many people there drive SUVs and Utes (Pick ups). The most popular are Toyota Prados and Hiluxs, Mitsubishi Pajeros and Tritons, Mazda BT50s, Isuzu D Max, Nissan Patrols and Holden Broncos. A good number of people and even utility companies get the following modifications done from new, i.e. Before the vehicle has even been driven by the owner: Bull bars front and rear Winch Larger wheels with proper all terrain tread. Roof racks Lockable storage system Lift kit to enable the bigger wheels and give more ground clearance. Snorkel The reason for this is because there are many places in Western Australia that you can only get access to if you have a vehicle that can work properly off road. If you work for a mining company or the forestry commission or just like being able to access the hard to get to beaches or 4 X 4 camping spots you need a vehicle like this. Of course, there is also a lot of big boys toys going on as well. Many will never see flooded riverbeds or slippery inclines so won’t need the snorkel or mud tyres.

A 2010 Nissan murano. Pep boys put axel, wheel bearing and gave it an oil change yesterday. Today on highway car was shaking then stopped accelerating started shuttering back and forth. engine light on. Had to get it towed. What happened?

In my car it was caused by a mass airflow sensor clamps coming loose on the inlet manifold snorkel which caused lean codes P0171 & P0174 as well as the P0102 mass airflow sensor low output code. So it's possibly was caused by an air leak past the mass airflow sensor, did they leave any vacuum hoses disconnected ?

How much oil overfill is okay? Is it okay to overfill oil a little if you have some extra?

My 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine I can get by with overfilling by 300 mLs but my Nissan RB30DE engine would pump oil into the air intake snorkel then it got sucked into the inlet manifold after I overfilled it with oil. That's because it's got a high volume RB25DE VVT engine oil pump fitted onto it which pumps much more oil at 7,000 RPMs than the standard RB30E oil pump. There isn't much room underneath the camshaft covers & despite having an oil drainback pipe fitted onto the exhaust side of the cylinder head more oil is pumped up into the valve covers than can drain away so I ended up with a big plume of smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. So I had to remember to put the exact amount of oil in the engine & not to overfill it by that much. That's if you're talking about engine oil !

Why are deserts extreme environments?

Well I was camping out in the Arabian Desert last weekend, just me, my partner, and my truck. You will notice how many lights are on it, how large the off-road tires are, the snorkel to keep dust and sand from the engine, etc. it’s pretty much the optimal vehicle for the desert, unless you want to drive an even larger one, like a Nissan Patrol Safari, or even a Unimog. Simply put - THERE IS NO WATER, at all. Not even a trickle. (The trees behind my truck in that photo have artificial watering by hoses, not natural watering.) It’s normal environment looks like THIS:

How hard is it to put a new engine in an old car?

It's not very easy because you need to use your brains a fair bit,in.some cases the old engine is similar to the old one & is basically a straight bolt in fit. In my case I bolted a cylinder head of a Nissan RB25DE (2.5 litre) engine, fitted the pistons, fitted the high volume oil pump,ECU & wiring loom from a 1995 model Nissan R33 Skyline GTS onto a Nissan RB30E (3 litre) engine which is fitted into my 1986 model Holden VL Commodore which was built in Australia,it shares the same engine as the Australian built Nissan R31 Skyline,so I built this engine :— The higher compression RB25DE pistons fitted onto the RB30E connecting rods, the RB30E engine has a 40mm longer stroke than the RB25DE engine, the cylinder head was basically a straight bolt on fit except I had to modify the oil supply for the variable valve timing mechanism on the inlet cam as the RB30E engine doesn't have an oil galleriy to supply oil to it so I had to run an external oil feed line to it & I also had to grind the lower part of the exhaust manifold as it kept on fouling up on the RB30E engine block, apparently it bolts up to an early 1986 engine block without doing that. I had to graft a Nissan RB25DE engine wiring harness into the Holden wiring harness, the exhaust dump pipe was out of a Nissan R33 Skyline GTS & I had to modify it to fit into the VL Commodore & I modified it to accept a Nissan RB30E flange gasket instead of the O ring gaskets so I got my dad to cut a flange out for me at his work when he was working,I had to extend it due to the increased engine stroke. A performance exhaust Shop made up a new inlet snorkel for me & I had the RB30E one dummy fitted to get the engine going,I also had to get a replacement ECU as the R33 Skyline GTS ECU which I was supplied with was blown, the engine was fouling spark plugs & I was getting a code 13 MAF (mass airflow),it wasn't the wiring or a MAF sensor because I checked the wiring back to the ECU & I tried another MAF sensor. The engine had a very noticeable power increase over the standard 114 kilowatts & with very little increase in fuel consumption over this RB30E engine :— Holden bolted them in when the mandatory use of unleaded fuel came in back in February 1986,other swaps in a Holden include converting this 308 cubic inch V8 engine which was released in 1969 :— To fuel injection using the later model 304 cubic inch V8 cylinder heads or the whole engine which was bolted into the 1989–1999 model Holden Commodores, the cylinder heads from a 1999 model (very last) engine will bolt onto the 1969 model 308 cubic inch V8 engine. Then there's just the head scratching task of making an EFI fuel supply up for it & wiring the EFI harness into the older car body,in Australia, the catalytic converters, charcoal canister, etc from the vehicle the EFI came out with must be fitted into the older car as well, they still require the fuel filler neck to be modified for unleaded fuel use & the tank needs to be fitted with a one way check valve & usually in the fuel filler cap. So, either the cylinder heads off this engine or the whole engine will bolt straight in :— You might have to change the oil pickup tube & oil pan over if you're fitting the engine into a Torana or a Kingswood because the Commodore oil pan won't allow the engine to fit otherwise !

Are turbocharged cars slower at low RPMs than naturally aspirated cars?

Off boost the turbocharged cars can be sluggish because of turbo lag because they traditionally ran a far lower compression ratio than a naturally aspirated engine. When GM-Holden fitted both the naturally aspirated Nissan RB30E & the turbocharged Nissan RB30ET into the VL Commodore back in 1986 as a replacement for the old 3.3 litre Holden six which couldn't be made to efficiently & economically run on unleaded fuel & the turbocharged version was meant to kill off the V8 engine but it didn't, well,I found that the VL Commodore which I drove 20 years ago which had the naturally aspirated engine in it had a bit more zip from the get go than the turbocharged engine until the turbocharger started to pump after coming onto boost on the turbocharged engine. The Nissan RB30E engine had a compression ratio of 9:1 whereas the turbocharged Nissan RB30ET engine ran a very low 7.8:1 compression ratio & Holden kept the boost conservative at around 5–6 PSI of boost on regular 91 octane unleaded fuel, they didn't run much of an intercooler on it,all they ran is an aluminium alloy inlet snorkel which had aluminium cooling fins on it. People did fit front mounted intercoolers into them then wound the boost up in them to about 15-insane 20 PSI then ran them on 98 octane premium unleaded fuel, they then toyed around with fitting extra fuel injectors or larger fuel injectors then either doing a chip rewrite in the ECU or fitting aftermarket ECUs which could be programmed in real time on an on car dyno, the low compression ratio was a good base for further modifications. One thing people did but they couldn't run high amounts of boost is to get the 9:1 compression RB30E engine then bolt the RB30ET exhaust manifold & dump pipe onto that engine, that gave the engine a bit more poke whilst maintaining good throttle response & minimal turbo lag off the mark. The more modern turbocharged engines run higher compression ratios, for example, the Nissan RB25DET runs an 8.5:1 compression ratio which is a good compromise meaning that the engine has good power right off the mark but it can also run a decent amount of Boost without the onset of detonation. Chevrolet had that issue with the supercharged LS7 7 litre V8 engine in the Corvette where they ran a 11.7:1 compression ratio as well as having forced induction, they melted the cylinder heads on the engine which were replaced under warranty, they eventually went to the supercharged 6.2 litre Chevrolet LT4 the next time around !

What should I prepare when I want to take part in off road adventures?

quite many things actually…it also depends on what kind of car you have… I have Nissan Patrol GR Y61 and I have done following: raised the chassis for 2″ (different shocks (KONI) and springs (OLD MAN EMU) snorkel for water crossings (be very careful how it is fitted because all seals must be closed) because I don’t have money for ARB front bumper I made some metallic protection for steering column because it is really exposed on my car and I could damage it very easily. I bought a rope from ARB for towing my/other car when they get stuck I had strengthen towing hooks because they were a bit rusty… for better and smother ride I had bought a fridge for 12V so I have cold beer all the time ;) what I need: WINCH!!!! WINCH!!!! WINCH!!!! nothing else is really needed… As I said, this depends what kind of car you have…if you have a “true” 4x4 (Patrol GR, LandCruiser 80/100/120, Land Rover Defender, others like that) than you don’t need as much…for “softer” 4x4 it needs a little bit more work…it also depends where you want to drive…With my car and setup I have been to Sahara 6 times (perfect car for sand), driven many mud tracks (even though my car is not so good for it because it is heavy), been driving on stones (great car for it), etc.
