Review Q&A lamborghini panel wagon

What if Rolls-Royce (or Bentley, or Lamborghini) made a pick up truck?

Question: ,“,What if Rolls-Royce (or Bentley, or Lamborghini) made a pick up truck?,” They have, actually. This is a 1926 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Pickup Truck. It is powered by this massive Rolls-Royce 40/50 horsepower Silver Ghost Inline-6. No. It is not a Straight-12. Those do not exist. The Silver Ghost had 2 spark plugs per cylinder and ,2 ,separate ignitions—battery and coil and magneto. The car did not always have the pickup body configuration. Rather it started life as a Tilbury Sedan with Willoughby & Co. coachwork. A Tilbury Sedan looks like this. Here is a drawing of a Rolls Silver Ghost Tilbury Sedan with the top raised. The car was purchased in its original configuration in 1940 by a California rancher. The chassis being very reliable but the Tilbury partial folding top body configuration being thought to be impractical, the new owner decided to rebody the Silver Ghost as a pickup. OK. This was 1940. Few people thought of cars as collectible industrial art objects that needed to be preserved. Classic Packards were crushed in war time scrap metal drives. Classic Duesenbergs could not be sold because of their high operating and maintenance costs. In the 1940s these cars, which we think of as million dollar collectibles toady, were just old cars that might be sold for scrap value. In the 1950s and 1960s, before collectors became investors, these cars were relatively unexpensive. And this Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost found itself hauling citrus fruit and garden tools rather than being driven by a chauffeur. This Silver Ghost, by the way, was a Springfield Rolls. It was built by Rolls-Royce at its American factory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Yes, Rolls-Royce once produced cars in the United States. The cars were almost identical to the British built car with the exception of their left hand drive and their 3-speed, rather than 4-speed, gearboxes. Many thought that the American Rolls exhibited higher quality. (Side story: I knew the daughter of a Rolls-Royce salesman who, in the 1920s, sold a lot of Silver Ghosts to Indians in Oklahoma who had suddenly come into oil wealth. These buyers had never owned a car before, and thus they did not know how to drive. So after selling them their new Rolls, this woman’s father had to teach them how to drive the car. They were not very good at that. And they frequently drove while drunk. Thus he also had to deal with a lot of crashed, and sometimes abandoned, new Rolls Silver Ghosts!) Because the Silver Ghost 6 produced a lot of torque and had a heavy separate chassis it worked well as pickup. The Silver Ghost pickup truck conversion is not the most unusual modification of a Rolls-Royce. Here are two Rolls purposely built by the factory specifically for tiger hunting. And the Rolls-Royce factory did once build a Silver Cloud Shooting Brake, i.e., a station wagon. Rather like that one. A modern Rolls-Royce could not similarly be converted into a functional pickup. Yes, it could be rebodied to resemble a pickup, like the Chevrolet El Caminos and Ford Rancheros or the Honda Ridgelines. But modern car based pickups built on unibody architecture are show trucks, suitable for light package delivery or use as funeral flower cars. Because there is no separate frame and the body is not separate from the bed even slight overloading of the bed will cause serious frame damage and buckle body panels. But there have been other (questionably successful) attempts to rebody a Rolls-Royce as a truck. Thus, with some regret, I give you these. And finally a Bentley pickup. Now I need a drink.

Is it fair to say that automotive brands like Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Volvo, and Buick will die out soon while Hyundai/Kia will soon beat VW and Toyota?

Suzuki is essentially, ( exception of bikes and offroad vehicles), dead in the United states but thriving elsewhere. (suzuki swift 2017) Volvo is thriving pretty much everywhere. possibly one of the best car interiors on the market both in terms of design and comfort a Volvo is currently one of the best places to be inside. (xc90 interior view ) and with the purchase of Volvo by Chinese giant Geely, they are growing at a rapid rate and will almost certainly if no changes are made in German competitors surpass them in terms of luxury and quality. Mitsubishi is continuously pushing its old fanbase away by ruining the Lancer over and over again, right now its ok if you get the 2.4L engine and opt for 4WD or the Evo, ( they supposedly canceled it but you can find one for sale in 2017 model year spec at a dealer still with a more powerful engine and AWD and all those aesthetic Aero goodies.) The cars they have been producing are going down hill in quality and Subaru is swallowing them whole. Buick, It’s just the mid range GM line in the states, Chevy<Buick<Cadillac. if you buy anything above the Chevy variant you’re just paying for a nicer interior, body panel changes and maybe a better engine. that's really it, its a bit of a ongoing joke. And until recently Buick was where we saw the European arm of GM’s (OPEL/Vauxhal) vehicles designs, meaning that the cars in europe from 2 years ago to now look like brand new Buick models in the states. However with those two brands now owned by PSA in France, we now no longer have the fantastic design of Opel ( credits to the nicer corvettes.) Out of the ones listed, this one may actually die out. Hyundai/ KIA, oh god yes they are making leaps and bounds towards building better cars. infact i’d wager a 2017 Hyundai elantra is a better driving car then a current corolla ( utter trash) and KIA is essentially their lower tier brand. although sometimes i wonder if its the other way around the way some of their cars seem to look nicer. With recent additions to the team such as former BMW M division Albert B. now in charge of Hyundai performance N brand, we’re seeing sporty and well handling cars come out of some Korean skunk-works. Korean cars beat Toyota? definitely. Beat VW… no i dont think that will happen and if it does it will take a while, VW is a large brand, encompassing VW, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Skoda and Seat not to mention Bugatti and some defunct names that can be brought back at a moments notice when it suits them. And they do produce some fine cars. Audi TT RS trumps a Genesis coupe. RS3 Beats down a Hyundai i30 N Brutally. Toyota is a brand that i feel should die out, it’s held up by the idea that Japanese=reliable and its getting to be a bit far from the truth now, its much less “reliable” and more just low maintenance, maintain a car properly and it’ll last you just as long as almost anything. ( Que my 362K miles Audi A4 Wagon.)

What are the ugliest cars in the world?

1. PONTIAC AZTEK The Aztek’s ugliness titles are both numerous and unfortunate. If you set out to build a car that violated every principle of aesthetics, you would find it hard to beat the Aztek: slab-sided, hunchbacked and perched on roller-skate-sized wheels, the Aztec looks like the spawn of an unholy union between a Transformers toy and a Dustbuster vacuum. 2. CITROËN AMI France may be renowned as centre of fashion, but it is also the birthplace of the regrettable Citroën Ami. The Ami came to market in 1961, and was noted for its reverse-rake rear window, a styling feature that has been employed by only a handful of manufacturers (not surprising, given the reverse-rake window’s lose-lose combination of dubious aesthetics and hopeless aerodynamics). Although its mechanical underpinnings came from the humble yet classic 2CV, the Ami veered off into a strange territory – like the polyester leisure suit and the mullet, rectangular headlights were a style that should never have seen the light of day. 3. AMC PACER Like avocado-coloured appliances, the Pacer is an enduring symbol of 1970s bad taste. AMC executives hoped that the Pacer would be seen as the next wave of car design. Instead, it was mocked as a rolling fishbowl. The Pacer’s odd design was heightened by its asymmetric doors – the right door was longer than the left, so passengers could climb into the back more easily. When the Pacer was converted into a station wagon, items stored in the back fell out when the right door was opened. And when it was converted to right-hand drive for some foreign markets, the long door was now on the wrong side. 4. AMC GREMLIN The Gremlin may well be the most badly proportioned car ever built. Seen from the side, it can resemble, depending on the light and the precise angle, a door stop, a wedge of cheese, or a badly-designed running shoe. Were AMC designers hoping that the Gremlin’s slightly elongated hood would conjure up the free-spirited Ford Mustang? If so, they failed. Instead of a wild horse, the Gremlin’s front end evokes a dog of questionable health and breeding. The Gremlin’s rear end was even worse, ending with an abrupt, strangely calculated angle that made the car look as though AMC had simply given up. 5. FIAT MULTIPLA Unique environments often produce bizarre creatures – like the sightless fish that live in deep caves. And Berlusconi-era Italy yielded the Fiat Multipla, a vehicle defined by a series of strange bulges, as if it had been constructed from soft plastic, then pumped up with air. The Multipla’s designers mounted running lights at the base of the windshield in a bulged fascia panel, giving it the look of a rain-forest frog that had undergone an unfortunate genetic mutation. When talent-show host Simon Cowell was shown a picture of the Multipla on Top Gear, he said it had a disease. 6. NISSAN CUBE Another vehicle from the mutant creature school of design, the Cube is notable for its multiple stylistic sins, which include an asymmetric rear window that wraps around the left side of the car, giving it the look of a halibut (a bottom-dwelling flatfish with an eye that migrates to the top of its body during development). Nissan designers went out of their way to make the Cube unique, and they succeeded: the Cube’s slumping windows look as though they were inspired by a Tolkien movie set or a bad Salvador Dali painting. 7. LAMBORGHINI VENENO Cutting-edge fashion is risky – the line between aesthetic brilliance and stylistic nightmare can be a fine one. And the Veneno crosses the line. When it was introduced at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the Veneno was immediately condemned by Edmund’s John Pearley Huffman: “Every supercar cliché and every bad idea Lamborghini ever had, stuffed into one overpriced show car,” he wrote. “It’s the worst thing out of Italy since fascism.” Agreed. Mercifully, the Veneno was a limited-production machine – only nine were built. The price was $4.1 million (U.S.), proving yet again that money doesn’t buy taste. 8. SUZUKI X-90 Like an inbred family that has spent too many generations in a back hollow, producing children with close-set eyes and bad teeth, a car line can go down the wrong path. The X-90 is a case in point. Although related to the late, unlamented Suzuki Sidekick, the X-90 is uglier. The X-90 is a strange amalgam of disparate automotive forms – it has the front end of a Japanese economy car, while the rear resembles a miniaturized pickup with a wing bolted onto its tail. Not a pretty picture. 9. NISSAN JUKE You may have hard the expression “hit by the ugly stick.” The Juke took more than one hit. 10. TATRA 603 If you don’t like Communist-era Czech streamliners that call to mind a Sputnik crossed with an Airstream trailer, the Tatra isn’t for you.
