Review Q&A renault grand espace

Is a minivan an oversized vehicle?

It depends on model and geographic locality. There are some minivans that are mid size, the third row is basically only for children and you compromise on cargo space. Examples are VW Touran, Toyota Verso, Renault Grand Scenic, Nissan X-Trail, Mazda 5 and Opel Zafira. Vehicles found mostly in the European market and similar kind of vehicles found in India. Then you have the full 7 seaters where you have space to fit 7 adults like the VW Sharan/Seat Alhambra, Renault Espace, Seat Tarracco. The North American minivans like the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, Chrysler, Dodge are very big for European or any area where roads are narrow and where parkings are narrow too. The same can be said of the SUVs. Now the practicality is there for families, especially when you need passenger space and cargo space. If they were cheap in Switzerland I would buy a full big size 7 seater that you find in North America.

Why are French car brands so unpopular and badly-regarded?

Damn! You mean that I have been wrong? The first car that I bought new in 1970 was a Renault R4, with opening roof. I had a lot of fun, went everywhere in Europe with girl friends then with my wife. When the roof collapsed, after a few years with a cardboard roof, we bought a Citroen GS, it was around 1980. Then in 1987 I bought a Renault Espace, then in 2001when it collapsed I bought a Grand Espace, and I am still using it daily to bring my dogs to the woods. You say that I have been fooled? One month ago I was considering buying an old R4 for 500 €, it was renovated and in perfect shape, but my wife did not want it because the past is past, and we are too old to make love in the car as we used many years ago. I would have made a big mistake?

Have you ever driven over 120 miles per hour? If so, what was the occasion?

It was time to change the lease on my company car, so I had a demo cars from a few dealers. I gave a friend of mine a lift from the South of England to the North at 2am one night. I kept a close eye on the bridges for speed cameras, and did a lot of the journey at 145mph. For my own safety I slowed down to 115mph when passing trucks and left a clear lane between us. If I saw anything remotely looking like it could be an unmarked police car then I slowed to 95mph (you can get away with a fixed penalty ticket if you’re speeding up to 25mph over). This was in a Ford Galaxy MPV. Another time I was driving perfectly legally. I decided to see how fast my Mercedes ML250 SUV would go. I could only get 225kmh (141mph) out of it on the German Autobahn. A couple of the corners on the Autobahn were a little bit sharp for 120+mph speeds in an SUV, so I decided to stick to 200kmh (125mph) for the rest of the journey. My worst experience was driving down a perfectly straight (almost) country lane lined with large oak trees on both sides. The was in another test drive car, a Renault Grand Espace 3.6 V8. As I came over the brow of one of the hills, I got the Espace airborne at 118mph. It was as I was floating through the air that I noticed the road was bending very slightly underneath me. I had to try and hold the wheel perfectly straight until I hit the ground and make the gentlest steering manoeuvre possible to get back on the correct side of the road without rolling into a tree.

What is the best car for 4 kids in the UK?

Here are some that I've tried Renault Grand Espace: 7 seats. Excellent, safe, but not at all long living. Both of mine failed at around 80K-100K miles. Toyota Land Cruiser: 8 seats. Big, fun and thirsty. Failed dramatically the first time it went off road (fording a flood into our village that Landrovers and Range Rovers were managing without problems). Audi Q7: 7 seats. Very capable, easy to drive for it's size. Comfortable, impressive. Very expensive to run. Mercedes E series 7-seater. I have an E320 diesel and it is an excellent all rounder, solid, comfortable, fast and economical. As I understand with the smaller engines are not less economical, just slower and cheaper to buy. Very good safety and second hand value, but watch for corrosion. Volkswagen Type 2 Combi. This is really an enthusiasts car, slow, thirsty and needing quite a lot of maintenance - but I've owned one and I'd recommend it for the fun if you have ever fancied one. These are some that I haven't tried, but are on my shortlist Volvo D5 V70 7-seater (or old 240). I've not owned one but it was on my shortlist. but I think because people know that they will be good they tend to be overpriced second hand. Range Rover Sport. Probably excellent in the same way as the Q7 but with even better off road ability and a more compact body suitable for off road and urban use. Anticipate even higher running costs than Q7 though. Tesla S 7 seater. My main concern would be that the short range would be very frustrating for the type of use I make of cars. To me there would be a lot of appeal in fitting up solar panels and wind turbines on the garage and making it self sufficient. You'd need to work out on a journey by journey basis how well it would work for you.

Are French cars (Renault, Citroen, Peugeot) bad?

No, I love them. 2 Renault Grand Espace 1 Citroen C 5 station wagon the newer version. And at the moment Peugeot 407 Station Wagon. Excellent cars all of them. They are good to look at, very comfortable and of you look after them, they go on for miles and miles. Of course they do have their foibels, but which car doesn't. All the rest have been Italian, Ive never had a Japanese car apart from Nissan Micra in 1984. Classic cars, always English or Italian. Alfa, Triumph, Jaguar, Rolls Royce and at the mo a mint MGB Roadster.

Should I pay someone to tune-up my truck or do it myself?

Learning how to do basic maintenance on your vehicle is a very useful skill. If by "tune up" you mean changing the oil, oil filter, air filter and maybe spark plugs, then by all means go for it. Just make sure that you are completely clear on the correct procedure and have the necessary tools. You'll need a torque wrench to make sure that you don't over tighten the sparks, probably. And you may need a tool to remove the oil filter and tighten the new one. I do this sort of stuff on my motorcycles myself, but not on my cars because I don't have the time any more. Being able to do this and being curious about your vehicle helps understand how it works and means that you will be more able to help yourself if you break down in a remote area. Having said that, some vehicles are such a major pain in the ass to do the simplest things with, that I wouldn't touch their engines with a barge-pole. The best car I ever had to work on was an old Saab 900. Brilliant. Everything clearly labelled and plenty of room to work. The worst cars, fun to drive but hell to work on: a Saab 9000 turbo (no room to do anything under the bonnet) and a Renault Grand Espace 3.0 V6 (transverse engine with no way to get to the rear bank of spark plugs without actually dropping the entire engine - I kid you not!).

What is the best used vehicle for a family of 6 with 2 children in car seats?

As the other answers have already pointed out, minivans and SUVs are the most obvious answer. There are lots of good choices in these segments, however you could also consider a few full sized wagons and sedans for the job. In terms of SUVs, crossovers in particular, the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe and Vera Cruz, Ford Explorer or GM Traverse/Acadia/Outlook are all reasonably priced choices. The Honda and Toyota entries are consistently well reviewed and ranked as reliable, they also tend to depreciate less. Oftentimes these crossovers offer better third row comfort and fuel economy than full sized traditional SUVs, however if you must have a full sized SUV, the Ford Expedition, GM Yukon/Suburban/Tahoe, Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada/Patrol are all choices to consider. The GM and Ford offerings are often ranked highly. If you were interested in luxury or near luxury SUVs, the Mercedes GL, Volvo XC90, Toyota Landcruiser or Prado/Lexus LX or GX, Acura MDX, Lincoln Navigator, Cadillac SRX and Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Audi Q7, Buick Enclave and Land Rover LR3/LR4 are all options. The MDX, GL, Q7 and XC90 are considered the best options. Not all the options listed above are not all standard 7 seaters nor are they available in all markets so do some research beforehand. In terms of minivans, the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey are the best options, however you could also consider the VW Routan and Sharan, Nissan Quest, Hyundai Entourage/Kia Sedona, Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town and Country, Buick GL8 and other GM offerings, Ford Galaxy, Citroen Picasso and Renault Espace can also be considered but some of them are also market dependant. In terms of wagons, the Mercedes E class estate and Volvo V70 and XC70 were both offered with rear facing jump seats. Compared to SUVs and minivans, the jump seats can be easier for children to get into and they can also be more fuel efficient and handle better. There are also older full sized sedans with two rows of bench seat that can fulfill your needs for a family of 6.

Are U.S. car brands considered reliable in your country?

In Belgium, whenever I see an old Chrysler or Dodge vehicle (from 1990 to 2010), they look so old and dated, as if a part will fall off any moment. As for Ford and Chevrolet, they are extremely rare, often imported through the grey market. Ford and Chevrolet in Europe are built by their European subsidiaries. American cars in Belgium are generally seen as too big or unreliable. The new Chrysler/Lancia Grand Voyager was pretty and quite good to look at and sit in, but for some reason it was, and is, very rare, considering its dealer was right on the main road not far from my home… VW Sharans, Renault Espaces and other minivans seem more common to find.

Why are Mercedes Benz cars so expensive?

Perhaps a personal perspective: I’m on my second Mercedes after a flawless E320, I now drive an ML 55 AMG. I think it’s the attention to detail. Both the cars mentioned above have a function where, with the engine turned off and the key out of the ignition, you can heat the car using the residual engine heat. An electric blower comes on and runs for about 30 minutes, circulating engine coolant and heating the car, more gently than it would if the engine were running, but enough that you stay nice and warm in the winter. I love that feature. The E320 had pneumatic door locks, so when you drove off, there was a subdued “swoosh” and the doors would lock (if you hadn’t turned that feature off). The ML 55 AMG doesn’t have that. The locks just “Clack” shut. But in the E320, the driver’s seat was hooked up to the same compressed-air system and I could adjust about eight different parts of the drivers’ seat until I was comfortable. Neat for long drives. Both cars have a strange way of opening the bonnet. You unlock it part way and then have to find and pull out a latch to unlock it all the way. In the E320 the latch poked out of the radiator grill and in the ML it’s inside the Mercedes star. And I love how everything is neatly labelled inside. Only the SAAB 900i was similar. Comfort. Both Mercedes are insanely comfortable. Without being unrealistically luxurious, they have a kind of practical comfort which means you can get in, drive for 1000 km and get out without being all stiff and achy. And you can happily cruise at 200 Km/h all day and both cars just lope along, hour after hour. And both happily tow(ed) our caravan. The ML with its perversely over-sized engine (V8 5.4 litres) obviously with such ease that it’s almost embarrassing. Yeah, I know for the US that counts as a lawnmower engine, but this is Europe… Also, they are very, very pleasant to drive. I know that this is subjective, but coming from someone who owned and drove the following: Mini Metro Renault Fuego Turbo SAAB 900i SAAB 9000 Turbo Hyundai Santa Fe Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel Renault Espace V6 Initiale Audi A4 V6 quattro cabriolet (still have that one!) Mercedes E320 Mercedes ML 55 AMG (still have that one!) … I can say that the Mercedes are brilliant for long-distance drives and I always look forward to a long drive. The Audi is a fun car, but if you drive 500 Km, you will feel every bump in the road. But it’ll have been a fun drive. If and when I need to look around for a replacement car (or cars), it’ll be Mercedes or Audi. Renault? Nah. Built to self-destruct before 150′000 Km. No thank you. SAAB? Yeah, nice, but there isn’t a SAAB company any more so who knows how long I’ll be able to source affordable replacement parts? Jeep? Meh. Soggy and wallowy feeling, as if it was always uncomfortable on tarmac and wanted me to go off road. Hyundai? Okay but it’s like eating a chicken burger compared to a proper Black Angus Filet steak. Mini? Hahahahahahahahahahaha. I was a student back then…
