Yes, Toyota currently manufacturers an EV. I know what you’re thinking, this must be a car not available in the United States because you’ve never heard of it? Nope, this car is sold in the United States and it’s called the Toyota Mirai. Yes, you’re thinking that is a hydrogen vehicles, not an EV. Yes and no, it’s a hydrogen vehicle but it’s indeed an EV too. This is because the Mirai is a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) whereas a Tesla, Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt, etc. are Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). So why is this hydrogen contraption an EV? Because it takes hydrogen from its highly compressed tank, combines it with oxygen (from the ambient air), and outputs electricity along with that constant trickle of water. For whatever reason, I often find myself behind a Mirai or “that person” just in front of me that sprays windshield wiper fluid at 70 MPH, usually within a few minutes of washing my car. Yes, I curse quietly at both of them but at least the Mirai drivers are not intentionally rude. From 1997–2004 Toyota manufactured 5,089 RAV4 EVs and it was only available in California: These vehicles were halfheartedly sold by Toyota — there wait list by far exceeded their manufacturing numbers. Chevron inherited patent rights for the NiMH EV-95 battery used by the RAV4 EV after they merged with Texaco whom purchased this from GM. Chevron won a $30,000,000 (USD) settlement from Toyota and Panasonic, soon thereafter the production the the NiMH was totally dismantled. The settlement allowed for only small NiMH to be produced, as in too small to be used for a vehicle. In 2013 Toyota released an even rarer EV called the Scion IQ EV. It was never made available to the general public. It’s marked FT-EV III because that is the 3rd generation concept car it was borne from: The production version dropped the FT-EV III marking: Source: ,InsideEV,s They made only 100 of these, 90 went to the United States, 10 to Japan. All were for ride share programs. 30 were delivered to my hometown of Irvine for use by the University of California, Irvine: First 30 2013 Scion iQ Electric Vehicles Enter UC Irvine Fleet Toyota does have plans of releasing six EVs around the year 2025 with one promised for 2020. These cars will be based on “e-TNGA” — a play on the name of the company's Toyota New Global Architecture modular platform. Toyota unveils images of upcoming all-electric cars, accelerates EV plans by 5 years - Electrek The actual first EVs Toyota will launch are the C-HR and IZOA, these are the same car with two different names. They’re being released in 2020 but only in China. Toyota debuts all-electric C-HR/IZOA before China launch - Electrek This is what they’re going to look like: If you want to get real “technical” Toyota says they’re releasing 10 EVs in 2020 yet most consumers would not consider these “vehicles” except perhaps in Asia where ultra-compact cars “are a thing”. The remaining vehicles are even smaller and include scooters, mopeds, and similar: Toyota is building very, very tiny electric vehicles for the next Olympics
