@Luluboutain Ja. Heb zelf jaren een Volkswagen 181 gereden, de opvolger van de Nazi Kübelwagen. Was verdomd lastig rijden met 1 arm omhoog.
VW Type 181: ,Volkswagen 181 - Wikipedia I drove one once, and it was the biggest POS you could imagine. Slower than a golf cart, all the chassis rigidity of cooked linguine, response (to any input) so slow you’d swear all the primary controls were connected via rubber bands. It’s only positive attribute: it was so simple that you could practically repair any field breakdown with a pocket knife and a can of lubricant. Oh, and (most times) it was faster than walking. I guess that makes two pluses. :)
The leading engine maker for a passenger vehicle in my opinion is ,Mazda, and their ,SkyActiv, motors. Honda, has a very long history of building cutting-edge naturally-aspirated engines. The K-series was amazing, and it’s crazy to think that the original K20 debuted 16 years ago in 2001. That is amazing longevity for any engine, much less in an environment with unprecedented changes in market and emissions standards. K24W in the modern USDM Accord produces 185 HP / 181 Lb. Ft. PY-VPS in the USDM Mazda CX-5 produces 184 HP / 185 Lb. Ft. Both are great engines that show there are different ways to produce motors. The VW Kübelwagen was made during WW 2 and it was based on the platform of the first VW beetle. It also is known as Typ 82. It was for military use only. The VW Kurierwagen was released in 1968 and was mainly made for the German Armed forces. Being designed 28 years later, it used more modern components, even if the concept shows some similarities. It has a bigger engine, a front trunk and is far more refined. This car was also known as VW 181, and you could also buy it as a private customer. The VW Safari is a slightly modified VW 181 for private use, it is more or less a fun car. It was sold mainly in the U.S. and is also known as “the thing”.
Volkswagen shortened to VW, is a German automaker founded on May 28, 1937 by the German Labour Front under Adolf Hitler and headquartered in Wolfsburg. It is the flagship marque of the Volkswagen Group, the largest automaker by worldwide sales in 2016. It started life making: These, above is a 181 pretty stock by the looks but don’t be fooled it may of been the base for there Bug hippie mobile with its air cooled engine but it was a Military spec vehicle, they also made the 182, later Hitler got involved with there “Peoples Car” project that could transport 2 adults and 1 child at 100 KM a hour / 62 MPH this vehicle is known as the Hippie car, the air cooled 1100 CC engine would propel it into the history books! such a vehicle was so good on sales that they made this: So divine don’t you have to agree? You want to buy one? I think yes! Anyway after the demise of the 3rd Reich VW lived on and now makes reasonably priced cars and these track monsters!
Kübelwagen Based on the type 1 (Beetle) but with limited-slip differential and gear-reduction hubs. Separate headlights and the shape of the fenders makes it visually different from the VW181. Volkswagen 181 (Thing) Production started in 1968. Used the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia floorpan and parts from the VW Type 1 (Beetle) and Type 2 (Microbus). It used reduction gearing from the split-screen Volkswagen Transporter (until 1973). Military 181s used portal axles, the civilians did not.
“,In a post-apocalyptic world, what motor vehicle would you want most, assuming fuel is not an issue?” Based on where I live (Puget Sound region of the US Pacific Northwest, living amongst major Army, Air Force and Naval installations, including a place where nuclear weapons are stored), there is only ONE apocalyptic scenario I would survive: an EMP attack. Based on that, there would be no road or infrastructure damage, just no transportation or utilities and, thus, limited food. The vehicle to have, at the beginning, is any old pickup, van, or car with a points-and-condenser ignition and generator with a mechanical regulator. Eventually, it might be useful to have something with a purely mechanical diesel engine. Note that all of these are old and not manufactured any more, or even allowed on the road (old diesels), for environmental reasons. So, pick something that was made a lot, and would be occupying an old wrecking yard. Something like an old Ford pickup. Something with 4 wheel drive might be useful, like an old Jeep. Another good source of parts, still, is an air-cooled Volkswagen. They’re EASY to fix or rebuild, last a LONG time in the worst conditions (like a Baja race), and can go just about anywhere. My choice? A ,Kübelwagen,. Or, in the US, a VW Type 181 ,Thing,. 1973 is better than 1974, IMHO, because it has a gasoline heater that make plenty of heat, rather than the age-old, and mostly useless, exhaust heat-exchanger found in 99.9% of all air-cooled Volkswagens. Like this one (the black oblong thing up in the corner) Yes, it takes-up some space in the trunk, but most of the space is used by the gas tank, anyway. The original Kubelwagen? Akin to the original Jeep. Ford F100 SWB. Mine had a 360 V8 and three-speed. The original engine lasted 450,000 miles, and parts were everywhere.
From 1956 until 2008 I have had about 25 VW, beginning with various beetle convertibles, 181 (Thing) on St, Thomas and Hawaii, Golf GT,I and ending with the Phaeton 12 cylinder. Every car was (at the given time) the most affordable, reliable and fun to drive car you could buy.
The Volkswagen Type 181 Thing was developed for two different markets. The ,Bundeswehr ,and a Mexican requirement for a more rugged alternative to the Beetle, for use on unpaved rural roads. The Thing was inspired by the Volkswagen Type 82 ,Kubelwagen ,as used by the Wehrmacht during WW2. Volkswagen Type 82 Kubelwagen Volkswagen Type 181 Thing. Volkswagen 181 - Wikipedia
A Volkswagen Thing. Type 181, based on the Kübelwagen, an air cooled German military vehicle used during World War II to traveerse the African deserts to compete with the allies CJ series Jeeps.
