Why are Avanza and Xenia cars so prevalent among Indonesians?

Long short story, back in 60s and 70s, the car was pretty cheap because there is no additional tax like today. Everyone bought sedans and even exotic cars like Mercedes W113 (aka pagoda), MG roadster, Lamborghini Miura even Toyota 2000GT is not too hard to buy and found (unless you are average Indonesian which is poor at that time due to 1965 inflation and political instability). People at that time hated Japanese car brand because its bad quality. All changed when President Suharto banned the car importation in 1973 and required that every car sold in Indonesia must be assembled in Indonesia (except you want to pay additional 300+% tax). Japanese brands then together with local companies started making cars in Indonesia (toyota, daihatsu, honda motorbike - astra, honda car - imora, suzuki - indohero, mitsubishi - marwa). Just because European was not yet assembled in Indonesia, government taxed it very much. People who want a car with rational and affordable price tag are forced to buy Japanese cars and fortunately, peoples in Indonesia are like it because its reliability compared to Chevrolet, Opel and Austin. In the late 70's, the government raised car taxes again and removed several car brands such as Subaru, Moskvitch, Alfa Romeo and others who failed to sell 500 units vehicles annually. Fortunately, passenger vehicles such as vans and minibuses are not affected. The coach builder company then took advantage of this opportunity by making the van and minibuses body for pickup truck. From here, Indonesian are loves to buy minibus and van even though their heart told that sedan still number 1 (it can be seen from the number of Corolla and Civic vs Colt T120 and Hiace minibus then). Why are Avanza and Xenia cars so prevalent among Indonesians? Back in 80s and 90s, all minibuses are made based on pickup truck. The car that was originally made to transport goods certainly did not feel as comfortable as car which designed to be a people carrier. This is because the chassis design called ladder frame which is used in those pickup truck and minibuses must priority strength than comfort. Of course back in the 90s there was a station wagon that has the comfort equivalent to sedan with the same practicality as minibuses like Volvo, Mercedes touring and Mazda Vantrend. Unfortunately, government considers station wagon as a sedan with high taxes. This happened until the early 2000s. At the end of 2003, Toyota (actually, its Daihatsu) build affordable minibuses that uses sedan chassis (its called monocoque chassis but its actually a unibody chassis which is small ladder frame welded with body and floor pan together) and quite well equipped. This car called Daihatsu Xenia and its twins called Toyota Avanza. Base trim Xenia with 1000cc engine cost about 60 million rupiahs and mid trim Avanza with 1300cc engine cost about 90 million rupiahs which is super cheap compared with 2004 Kijang Innova (cost you about 136,5 million rupiahs for base trim) or sedan like 2002 Honda City SX8 (cost you about 120 million rupiahs). People who know cars buy them like a crazy. People who do not understand cars but need a car following their path to buy this car. Due to more demand than the supply, the price of Avanza is appreciated (buy Avanza in 2004 for 94 milion rupiahs, sold it in 2005 for 120 million rupiahs). We have no choice other than Xenia and Avanza because at that time, the only competitor came from Honda Stream with quite expensive price tag with larger engine (Indonesian people do not like big engined cars because its expensive tax). In addition, Avanza is more salable than Xenia because Toyota brand is considered as more prestigious than Daihatsu even though both cars are made by Daihatsu. From this point, its answered why Indonesians really loves Avanza and Xenia despite there are much, much, much better competitors like Honda Mobilio, Suzuki Ertiga, Mazda VX-1, Nissan Grand Livina, Chevrolet Spin, Wuling Confero, and Mitsubishi Expander.
