Review Q&A mclaren suv name

How many Mercedes classes are there?

So this will be fun. Since Mercedes started w/ cars or sedans, they come in these guise:- A-class - sub-compact, city car B-class - city car, but slightly bigger dimension for families in mind. C-class compact car E-Class Executive Car S-Class - Full Size Car - originally called Sondler Klasse, meaning special class So Coupe versions have the Coupe at the end of the class name, like S-class Coupe, E-class Coupe Then, they made the 4 door version of the coupe silhouette, and they give the CL prefix to all the sedan classes. So right now it’s CLA-class - 4-door coupe version of the A-class sedan CL-class - OG luxury transportation device. Basically an S-class coupe. rebranded to S-class coupe. CLA-class - 4 door coupe version of the A-class CLC-class - suppose to be a 4 door coupe version of the C-class, they didn’t use this name anymore. it was available a while ago as a cross between a C-class coupe and a hatchback, but it didn’t sell very well. CLS-class - 4 door coupe version of the S-class coupe. (it’s based on the E-class chassis, but the name is marketing i guess) They also produce a roadster in their line up. A 2-door coupe w/ a retractable roof. This line has a SL-prefix. SLC - the small, compact roadster SL - the original roadster. soon the be died off due to cannibalization from the S-class coupe (which IMHO is a superior product) So, for the SUV range, it started w/ the G-wagon, or the German would call it Gelandewagen. Originally created for the West German Army during the cold war, the truck was turned into a civilian version and the G-class is born. Just like how they added CL- prefix to 4-door version of the coupe, they added GL- prefix to the range of SUV. G-class - the OG off-roader. Now a superlux cruiser on the jungles of Beverly Hills and deserts of Dubai. GLA-class - Compact, city SUV GLB-class - recently launched, suppose to be the smaller brother version of the GLE and GLS GLC-class - compact / crossover version of the SUV GLE-class - mid-size SUV GLS-class - full-size SUV. this thing is huge and fully capable for off roading. It was meant to be the flagship in the SUV line-up and to replace the G-wagen, however, people still love that boxy 70s design SUV. And there’s always the odd-man out. the Van. It used to be a different division, now it’s under the passenger market and it’s called:- V-class - The van. really the odd man out. Electrification is the future and Mercedes is already planning to go with it. Currently, pure battery electric vehicles have the EQ-class moniker. In the current and near future line up:- EQA - BEV crossover SUV. Uses the same platform as the GLA / A-class. EQB - BEV SUV based on the GLB platform. EQC - BEV SUV. Slightly bigger than a GLC but smaller than a GLE. EQV - BEV Van. Based on the V-class platform. EQS - BEV Car. Completely new platform, Mercedes take on the S-class of EV. Of course, Mercedes has 2 major subsidiaries that up rate their series productions car to cater to 2 distinctive market: luxury-orientated and performance-orientated. The performance division is called AMG comes from the initials of the 2 founders and the place where they started the their first modified mercedes. Before this, they have their badges slightly different in terms of numbering. Like the normal Mercedes has 3 digit numbering which indicates their engine size (now power index) like E200, of S450, but AMG version has only 2 digits like the E43 or S63. Previously, they always build cars from series production, but recently, they are given a free hand to create a sports car from the ground up AMG-GT - Mercedes-AMG version of the sports car. build from the ground up. The luxury division is called Maybach (pronounced my-bak) to indicate updated luxury addition like bespoke finishing & colors, increased sound proofing. Currently, most of the unit offering is on changes on the S-class. They have a stretched version of the S-class including a super-stretched version called the Pullman Normal Version Pullman version The numbering sequence is different as they are using the 6 in the middle instead of the 0 or 5 in the series productions. Example: The normal S-class is S450, S500, S550, but the Maybach versions currently are S560 Furthermore, to differentiate their branding, their names has been slightly altered to reflect their orientation:- Mercedes-Benz - series / normal production. ie Mercedes-Benz S550 Mercedes-AMG - performance update. ie Mercedes-AMG S63 Mercedes-Mayback - luxury updates. ie Mercedes-Maybach S560 Of course, once in a while, Mercedes would product a halo product w/ names that does line up w/ anything on their series production. Mercedes SLR - collaboration with McLaren to create a supercar in the early 2000s Mercedes SLS - gullwing style doors. a homage to their famous SL300 back in the 50s/60s Mercedes Project One - yet to be release supercar that is basically a modified F1 car Mercedes also made buses, trucks, tractors and specialized vehicle like the unimog but they are in a different division. So specialized that market is that they rebrand into Daimler trucks to differentiate with Mercedes. So yes, Mercedes is a huge brand w/ many versions of the car. Hope this will satisfy your curiosity. Update: 68k views. Thank you!!

What are some interesting things about Ferrari?

I will offer some thoughts randomly, both important and trivial items: Ferrari has never offered a 2 seater car in AWD/4WD - unlike rivals Lamborghini, Porsche, etc. every street and racing Ferrari has been RWD. AWD was introduced in the Ferrari FF four seater and continued onto their GTC/4 Lusso. Ferrari utilizes sophisticated traction control systems to ensure the level of safety that others typically use AWD for. Ferrari has never made an SUV and most likely intends to never make one. Again, unlike their rivals Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche, Bentley who all have made an SUV, Ferrari sticks to their “racing car” raison d’etre, faithfully going into year 70 now. Ferrari will not even make a 4 door sedan, relegating it to corporate brother Maserati and their Quattroporte/Ghibli. The Scuderia Ferrari badge you see on Ferrari racing cars and many of their street racing cars represents the “horse stable” (racing team) of Ferrari. What many do not know is that Enzo Ferrari himself prior to establishing the Ferrari S.p.A. in 1947 and racing under that brand, had raced Alfa Romeo cars with this badge. One example of this is the 1935 Alfa Romeo Bimotore. Ferrari is the only automotive manufacturer to own their own dedicated race track for testing. The Pista di Fiorano (“Fiorano” for short), is a 1.86 mile track where each corner is designed specifically to test certain aspects of the vehicles chassis, braking, roadholding capabilities, etc. Also it is useful to simulate corners from numerous Formula One Grand Prix tracks around the world. The track is utilized both for Formula One racing cars, privateer racing cars (i.e. FXX-K), as well as development of all street cars. Whereas many other manufacturers have come to resort to the Nurburbring Nordschleife circuit in Germany for testing and development, Ferrari primarily does their development on this track. Ferrari’s original mission was to simply build race cars. The street cars were only there to “finance” the racing division. Over time, the street cars began to take on their own identity and importance and eventually overshadow the race cars for recognizability. Now it would be hard for many to reconcile a world without Ferrari street cars, but the old man himself Enzo Ferrari supposedly had an almost disdain for their necessary evil. As such, one of the major items of what makes a Ferrari special is their utilization of race technology in their street cars. Often in the old days this was merely using race engines as the platform for street car motors, whether it was the vintage V12s or the turbo era F1 cars of the 1980s. A lot of downforce engineering learned in F1 had started to be applied in the mid 1990s to the modern day. Starting in the late 1990s, Ferrari finally offered their first automated manual transmission, the single clutch “F1” transmission offered in the F355 model, 1999 model year. This was 10 years after debuting the transmission in the F1–89 grand prix car for the 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix. This was the first proper automated manual transmission for a road car and it wasn’t long before other manufacturers started to follow suit. Ferrari was all about the V12 engine. It had the sophistication and panache for his cars while exhibiting great performance and sound. For the longest time he never intended on making any other kind of motor. His son Alfredo “Dino” died at the young age of 24 of muscular dystrophy. He had been working on a V6 engine design for the race cars, and after he died Ferrari built the Dino 206S race car honoring his work. Eventually Ferrari would build the 206/246 cars under the Dino marque, which led to the V8 powered 308 GT/4 Dino. From 1947 to 1968, all Ferrari road cars were V12 powered, and because of this Ferrari utilized a different brand name for their non V12 cars. This changed in the late 1970s when Ferrari was struggling to sell these cars in a tough market hampered by the oil crisis, so the Dino marque died then. But to this day there are purists who feel that a Ferrari isn’t a Ferrari unless it has a V12 motor. Ferrari is the newest of all Italian automotive marques save for Lamborghini and Pagani. Alfa Romeo, FIAT, Lancia, Maserati, Bugatti (if it is technically an Italian company) are all older than Ferrari, by at least 30+ years. While much is said about Ferrari and it is talked about with such reverence, it is not the oldest Italian marque. Speaking of Lamborghini and Pagani, Ferrari by most accounts is a major factor in their creation. According to legend, Lamborghini was created when Ferruccio Lamborghini was dissatisfied with a personal Ferrari road car he owned (250 GTE 2+2), supposedly with its clutch. Pictured here at the Lamborghini Museum: So, Lamborghini upon meeting Enzo Ferrari was rebuffed to an extent that he created his own car company out of spite. “Stick to making tractors, I’ll stick to making cars” is often the story you hear told. It is a formidable and important car company in its own right who without this altercation would probably never have been started. Horacio Pagani was a former Lamborghini employee who decided to start his own car company in 1992 and became famous for making hypercars starting in 1999 with the Zonda C12. 18 years later, Pagani is still alive and well. His company is one degree removed from being “encouraged” by Ferrari. Ferrari is the most successful car company at creating hype/demand/exclusivity. They have taken their race program and built a huge panache from it which Lamborghini, Porsche, McLaren have not been able to achieve at the same level. If all four of these cars looked, sounded and drove relatively the same, the Ferrari would often be considered the most desirable. It’s just how it is, and the dealership network has been able to control supply/demand better than their competitors. Nobody in the automotive industry has built as strong an identity as Ferrari. Ferrari has lent their hand in helping their corporate brothers. Initially in the early 2000s, Ferrari owned Maserati directly and lent a hand with their motors and engineering support. Despite Maserati rescinding under the FIAT umbrella, they still have ties to Ferrari engineering. Ferrari also lent a hand with the motor and suspension design for the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio sports sedan; in some ways this car can be considered a Ferrari sports sedan. Due to branding reasons, Ferrari could never sell sedans or luxury cars in the sub $200,000 price bracket but via the FIAT empire Ferrari can influence the final product with these other cars. Despite the criticisms levied over the years (i.e. lacking performance in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s, styling since the early ‘00s,), the one constant that cannot be denied over essentially the entire 70 year run of cars is that they all sound from very good to amazing, never a bad sounding car. Even the V6 of the Dino and the V6 motor of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio both sound very good, much better than a typical V6 motor sounds. When one thinks of Ferrari, the engine sound is almost always the most consistent quality the car manufacturer provides, and that can’t be said of most other brands. Lastly, despite such reverence and exclusivity, Ferrari has produced a ton of different models and variants within these models, in their 70 year history. Whereas an extreme Porsche or Lamborghini enthusiast could recite all of the models in that company’s history, a Ferrari enthusiast has a major challenge just naming all of the cars from 1947 up to the early 1970s, let alone all of those cars and the ones produced since the early ‘70s. The generic model names of 250, 275, 330, 365 alone have numerous variants both street and race (and sometimes blurred), along with your random 166s, 212s, 400 SuperAmericas, 500 Superfasts built by different coachbuilders. It’s a lot to keep up with and yet it never once tarnished the image of the car company. That is also not to mention the handful of one off cars built for wealthy and distinct clients. Ferrari for the right person and price has and will build you variations of cars that exist in their lineup with revised bodywork and paint jobs, but rarely if ever any substantive changes to the chassis/motor/suspension/etc. Just a few things that are interesting with Ferrari.

What do the letters in the Mercedes-Benz car model names signify? What is the significance of the different naming schemes? What does a 2 letter model name indicate?

Mercedes have realised that their naming conventions are no longer clear, and are starting a process to create a more logical, identifiable structure. C will be the mark for coupes and convertibles G is the new suffix for SUVs and crossovers SL will remain for all sports cars So that's obvious. Naturally, Mercedes then muddle things up once again. I'll leave Car magazine's Georg Kacher to explain the rest... 'According to CAR's sources, the revised ABC means the upcoming four-door coupe spun off the A-class architecture is no longer badged CLC. Why? Because the second C from now on denotes the model range, and this is obviously no C-class. CLA is therefore the correct compilation for an A-class coupé, even though the L in the middle doesn't make a lot of sense to these ears. The GLC crossover due in 2014 - hitherto known as GLC - will be accordingly marketed as GLA. What about the CLA shooting brake? Like its bigger CLS-based brother, it won´t get a bespoke three-letter code. If they ever materialise, the pending A-class coupe and cabriolet would be badged... what? CLA would come to mind, but this name is already spoken for, so maybe the CLA should be re-baptised CLB, as in B-class, while there is still time to do so. As far as the C-class family goes, the next coupe and cabrio will wear the CLC moniker. One rung up, CLE would confirm that you are looking at a two-door E-class. The new S-class coupe will then be badged CLS, right? Wrong. According to M-B, the four-door CLS coupe retains its familiar contraction as it is widely perceived to be more S- than E-class. Says who? Following this somewhat contrived philosophy, the big two-door Benz would regain the traditional SLC shorthand symbol while the smaller sister model of the SLS could pick up the prestigeous SLR badge that was not too long ago owned by a moderately successful sports car co-developed with McLaren.' What are the greatest cars of all time?

This is a very difficult question because there have been so many great cars built over time. What are the criteria for “best?” There are so many different eras to think about which makes it complex, and there is no perfect car. If you wanted to reduce it to the car which has covered the most miles reliably all over the globe you would probably find that the Mercedes Benz 240D/300D W123 sedan would be considered “best.” The MB W123 was produced from 1976–1986 and exported throughout the world as a luxury executive automobile. It featured hand-built quality and robust engineering of all systems including a bullet-proof 5 cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that would run on just about any fuel you put it from kerosene to aviation fuel. These cars would often cover a million miles and served as taxis, family cars, station wagons, limousines, etc. up until the present time and there were 2.7 million of them sold. Mercedes-Benz 300D Saloon (wikipedia) The “best” sportscar is undoubtedly the Porsche 911 which was first introduced in 1963 and continues to be manufactured today. The 911 epitomises the driver’s car for owner-enthusiasts, and with its quirky rear-engine layout owes more to the post-WWII Volkswagen Beetle than it does to traditional sports cars such as the Ferrari and Jaguar. The original 911 had a highly-tuned 6 cylinder boxer engine that was air-cooled and produced about 130 horse power from 2 litres displacement. This may not sound like alot of power, but it was in a very light and agile body with a “2+2” seating arrangement and could reach a top speed of over 200 km/hr (125 mph), and unlike a lot of sports cars of the era it was stable and handled well at speed. For many “Porsche guys” the ultimate 911 was either the mid-70’s 356 Carrera RS which was a road-legal racecar or the mid-80s 930 Turbo Carrera both of which produced major performance advantages over previous models. Today after some growing pains including the movement to water-cooled engines in the ‘90s, the 911 retains its essential DNA of rear engine, 2+2 sportscar but has between 400–500 horsepower and a top speed of over 300 km/hr (190 mph). Put that together with an amazing racing heritage and you have the “best” sportcar ever. The Porsche 911 model 991 that represents 1 millionth 911 produced on display at Volkswagen Group Forum, Berlin. (wikipedia) So what is left then? We have covered the best luxury sedan of all time and the best sportscar of all time. Without a doubt the remaining category should be utility vehicle and here we have a bit of a toss-up between the U.S.A.’s Jeep, the U.K.’s Land Rover and Japan’s Toyota Land Cruiser, but I’m going to have to go with the “Cruiser” because it more than any other vehicle has made the SUV a universal currency in automotive history. As history tells the WWII Army Jeep was a tough little vehicle that performed well when not much was asked of it but getting over hill and dale in the thick of combat. The British answer to the Jeep was the Land Rover and its ultimate incarnation the Defender model which is still in production today after 35 years. What the Toyota Land Cruiser did starting in the 1960’s was to make the SUV dependable and universal. Today wherever in the world you may be you can be assured that there are mechanics and parts for your Land Cruiser in the rare event that it should need anything. A J80 model Toyota Land Cruiser from the 1990’s (Wikipedia) So there you have it, my picks for the best cars of all time in three categories: luxury sedan, sportscar and utility vehicle. There were more popular cars such as the Ford Model T and VW beetle, and faster cars such as the McLaren and Lamborghini but these were not necessarily better. I have owned two of three and so I speak from personal experience as well as from automotive history. Honorable mention goes to the Volvo 240 station wagon/estate for best ever “family car.” copyright Kevin O’Driscoll 2018

Why Do companies in automobiles sector name their vehicles with lesser known meaning? Eg Marazzo, liva, figo etc. Why they do not keep it simple?

Okay, good question, but the answer is not so easy. So, each maker has the liberty to come up with their own names and hence each one has its own method of naming their cars which make most sense to them. Sportscar manufacturers - They come up with names with have heritage, evoke emotions and are dramatic. Like McLaren - Senna (voted the best driver ever). Also, McLaren is the only car that have the legal rights to the name Senna, as he raced for McLaren back in the days. Same way, Ferrari named Enzo after Enzo Ferrari, the founder. Lamborgini mostly keeps the names of its cars after the name of famous bulls. Another way to name cars is by the alphanumeric ones - XUV300, M3, RS5, SL500, etc. They have a subtle way to say what kind of car it is and the kind of segment it belongs to. So, for example, BMW has a very methodical way of naming its cars. The smallest range of cars is the 1 series followed by the 2 series and 3 series. The bigger sedans and limos are 5 series and 7 series. Then they have a M badge which is the hardcore performance divison. Hence, M3, M4, M5 and so on. Then for SUVs, BMW start with the smallest one names as X1 followed by the bigger X3 and the biggest version X5. Audi and Mercedes also follow similar pattern of naming. Global Players - Manufacturer of mass-market autos like Hyundai, Toyota and the Volkswagen try to find names that can be used across countries. They should be easy to pronounce, high recall value and help in marketing efforts. Example - Corolla and Innova is a well know easy to pronounce globally. An interesting blunder by Tata was they had named the Tiago as Zica earlier which coincided with the Zika virus name. It was promoted by Messi himself and that had to be scrapped completely in the end. Imagine, what a waste! Another example was Pajero was launched in Mitsubishi in Spain and had to immediately change the name as it was a term of abuse in that country. Generally, a code name is given during testing and car launch to check the reaction of the people and then modify it to actual name till production time. Tata had named its new 7 seater concept as Hexa and kept it unchanged for the production vehicle as well as the name caught on really well. Some of their other concepts are HX7 which became Harrier and the 45X which is named Altroz. At M&M, they love the letter “O” and has been a sort of a feature for them. For example, Scorpio, Bolero and Cheeto. Now, the new way for them is to have “UV” followed by a segment based to number - XUV300, KUV100, TUV100 and so on. They have gone back to the “O” love and come up with Marazzo, is my theory. So, to sum up, we as consumers have no control, each company has a set of criteria and basically name them accordingly.

If car brands had honest slogans, what are some examples of what they would be?
