252.9 mph in the le Mans 24h in 1998 by ,Roger Dorchy, with a ,WM ,P88-Peugeot. Yes, neither in the US neither with an American car or an American driver. All French actually…
In the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans, French driver Roger Dolchy— driving for Weiter Racing— drove the WM P88 to a then astonishing 405 km/h (or 252 mph) on the old Mulsanne Straight. This made it not just the fastest LMP car, but also the fastest car in the world; a record that wouldn’t be beaten for 17 years until the Bugatti Veyron arrived in 2005 with a top speed of 407.5 km/h (253.81 mph). The car actually went so fast that it contributed to the track’s layout change before the 1990 race, adding 2 chicanes on the straight to keep the cars from blowing their engines or wearing out their tires due to the combination of high speeds and downforce. How was this car able to go so fast?? It was powered by a 2.8L turbocharged Peugeot V6 engine, which sent 910 bhp to the rear wheels at 8,300 RPM. The creators behind the car had purposely sacrificed reliability over the car’s power (it only lasted 53 laps after suffering from turbo, cooling, and electronic failure), because they wanted to break the 400 km/h barrier on the then-chicaneless Mulsanne Straight; the car was even codenamed “Project 400” when it was still under development.
