What is the main function of an intake manifold?
An intake manifold is a plenum or chamber used usually atop of a car to bring in outside air and direct it towards each of the engines cylinders. It also houses the injectors for the cylinders The height width of the runner going to each cylinder can affect the torque output of the engine. Usually a higher manifold will have good low end torque, like the older Chevy TPI engines they made a lot of low end torque but fell flat at higher rpms. Chevy lowered the intakes on the next redesign LT1 engines to help this and have the engine spin higher. So this is what an intake is.
Does it mean in fuel-injected systems that the fuel does not pass through the intake manifold?
Throttle Body Injection ( TBI) does go into the intake manifold like carborated engines. Multi Port ( MPI)and Tuned Port (TPI)injection spray fuel directly into the intake port in the cylinder head.
Why is it hard to start a cold engine?
The viscosity of the oil is thicker, do it takes more power for the starter to turn the engine over. If you have a carburetor, they use the wet flow concept so the air fuel vapor condenses, clings to the intake manifold walls and the vehicle has a hard time lighting the fire with skewered fuel/air ratios. So then you have the choke which restricts the air, thereby enriching the fuel-air mixture with fuel and then the vehicle starts. Fuel injected engines have the computer tell the injectors to inject more fuel until the temperature gets up to operating temperature. The temperature sensor will tell the computer to ease off on the duration of the fuel injected when warmed up. Early model GM Tuned Port Injection units had another injector for enrichment. Later models had their TPI fuel injection computer recalibrated so the 8 fuel injectors did the job, the extra fuel injector was eliminated.
