Review Q&A spark plug frequency

What is the time interval of spark plug and air filter replacements on an NS 200?

Spark plug replacement is every 20,000 km. Air filter is every 15,000 km. Its on Page 1 of the Periodic Maintenance and Lubrication Chart. However, replacement frequency will be different if you are using aftermarket parts like platinum or iridium spark plugs that are designed to last more than 3x than the stock parts. Or the washable filters which are replaceable after 6 or so numbers of washes. Personally, I replace the spark plug on my 2014 model NS200 once the electrode is eroded enough that I cannot set a uniform gap. Depending on the riding conditions, the 3 spark plugs won’t erode all at the same time since the 2 side plugs will stop firing after over 6,000 RPM. The main or middle plug is usually replaced more often than the 2 side plugs so I put iridium type on the middle and use stock Champion or Bosch spark plugs at the sides. I replace air filters when there is a noticeable delay in acceleration which by experience is at every 20,000 km or so. I ride daily around the city on mostly paved roads while during long weekends, I ride in dusty and non-paved road of the countryside. Also, driving habits, local climate and frequency and how you clean the filters affects its longevity. I clean the air filter every 5,000 km by blowing compressed air free of water vapor from inside to outside portion of the filter. Never from outside to inside portion or else the “pores” of the filter will get clogged easily and will cause poor fuel efficiency and delayed acceleration if not replaced immediately.

How do spark plugs in IC engines produce voltage up to 30k volts, using a 12 volt battery?

It uses an ,Ignition coil,, which is a simple circuit with a voltage source (battery), a switch, a contact breaker (mechanical device that switches from a short circuit to an open circuit when the current gets to a certain point), a transformer (pair of coupled inductors) and a capacitor, and flipping a switch to get a transient response. When switch A is closed, the current doesn't instantly go up, but eventually it does. It has to stay connected long enough to charge the inductor (that is, get the current to its final level). When the current reaches the level it needs to, it opens the contact breaker (in brown on the diagram). Switch A also needs to close at this point. When that happens, the primary inductor coil and capacitor together form an LC circuit, also called a tuned circuit. When disconnected from the power source it will oscillate at a resonant frequency. Image source and deeper explanation: ,UNSW physics: Mechanics with animations and film clips: Physclips. The oscillation of the LC circuit drives the ,Transformer,. Whatever voltage appears on the primary coil (which is the voltage from the LC oscillator), a multiple of that voltage will appear on the secondary coil, which is where the spark plug is. By making the transformer a step-up transformer with a 3000:1 turns ratio, it can very easily deliver 30,000 volts to a spark plug at a very low current. Thanks to the fact that you're dealing with transients instead of steady-state stuff, it actually doesn't need to be a 3000:1 transformer -- it can be much lower and still deliver 30kV for the brief moment needed to make the spark gap.

How does a spark plug produce current?

Spark plugs does not produce current per se…. The spark plug gaps produces arcing when high voltage is developed across the gaps as it will discharge the current directly to ground….The initial arcings ionizes the air in the immediate area around the gaps thereby enhancing the air conduction level at the same time reducing or lowering the air resistance /impedance, hence making it easier for current to jump and be discharged to ground potential…. The spark gap arcings that resulted from the breakdown of the air insulating characteristics produces an equivalent very high frequency oscillations producing multiple harmonics…. In this situation, the spark gap behaving like a capacitor in a tank circuit, now serves as sort of an energy multiplier due to its continued arcings!

Which is better: Skoda Rapid or VW Vento petrol, and how are the servicing and maintenance costs comparing the two?

I don't know much about Skoda's ASS but I can definitely comment about VW, since I own one. I've never had a disappointing experience at a VW service centre. In fact I've been treated very well even without an appointment. The guys at my service centre also follow up after every visit. I have also received free pick up and drops. I've got nothing to complain. Let's look at some myths. Myth 1: High Maintenance Not really. Can somebody please define high for me? What is the benchmark that is used for comparision? Maintenance cost for Alto? VW has a yearly service schedule and I spend Rs.6800 a year on service, which includes everything(Oil+filters+labour+washing+spark plugs etc). I have never had a breakdown in 4 years. Hyundai's, Suzuki's, Honda's at least have 2-3 services a year and you spend at least 4000 - 5000 per service. I used to own a Santro Xing and never ever have I spent less than 4000 for a service. Myth 2: Parts are expensive. I did a research on this before making my purchase and yes they are expensive but not more than 10-15% compared to the likes of Hyundai. An oil filter costs Rs 325 an Air filter costs about 500 I guess. Let's not forget the frequency of a part failure is miniscule. I've never had a single part failure in four years. Now to the positives: Excellent build quality Excellent safety Top notch ride quality Unparelled high speed behaviour

Can American plugs be used in the UK?

Can American plugs be used in the UK? American spark plugs - yes. American sink plugs - yes. American ear plugs - yes. American electrical plugs - no. Even with an adaptor you’ll have to take note of the voltage difference and in some cases the frequency.

Why are car parts so hard to reach? For example in order to change my car's spark plugs I have to take out the engine manifold, unplug several hoses, and use a swivel socket to reach the spark plugs.

I think the answer to this is fairly obvious: manufacturers do not deliberately make such maintenance tasks difficult. Their objectives are to produce a competitively priced vehicle. Generally this means that ease of production becomes critically important. And so typically, an engine for example, will be assembled away from the vehicle body & lifted into position later. The position & orientation of the engine within the engine cavity is dictated by the overall design which these days will require a short engine, (think V6), with a low profile. This does often result in access difficulties to certain engine components. To reduce the impact of these difficulties the manufacturer will generally put some effort into reducing the frequency of such maintenance tasks. Spark plugs are an example of this, today better plug design & materials can result in plug life of 50,000 miles. Also worth noting that the service handbook is not designed for DIY, most maintenance tasks these days are managed by dealers who have specialist tools & experience.

What is a microwave ignition system?

Microwave Ignition System is an advanced ignition technology that reliably extends the operating range of internal combustion engines will aid practical implementation of the next generation of high-efficiency engines. The microwave-assisted spark plug under development by ,Imagineering, Inc,. of ,Japan, has to expand the stable operating range of gasoline-fueled engines through plasma-assisted combustion, but the factors limiting its operation were not well characterized. The microwave-assisted spark plug initiates plasma using a standard spark discharge from an ignition coil, then enhances electron energy and expands the plasma by emitting microwaves into the combustion chamber. Microwaves generated by a magnetron at a frequency of 2.45 GHz are transmitted through the spark plug insulator into the combustion chamber. In the combustion chamber, microwaves are absorbed by the free electrons in the spark discharge, generating non-thermal plasma. Fig- Schematic of engine with sensor locations (dashed lines) The Imagineering Inc. microwave-assisted spark plug cannot generate plasma without first initiating a spark discharge, indicating that microwaves do not create plasma simply by a coronal discharge between the conducting spark plug electrode and the ground. Electric field simulations by the designers of the microwave spark plug system in a 75 mm diameter x 130mm cylindrical chamber estimate the maximum electric field strength, concentrated at the electrode, as approximately 2000 V/m, with field strength attenuating approximately by the third power of distance from the spark plug electrode, a decay rate perhaps relating to the exponential ,Bouger law, decay of an electromagnetic wave propagating into a plasma. Fig: Schematic of microwave-assisted spark system The rapid attenuation of microwave power with distance from the electrode implies that as the flame front grows away from the electrode, there is little microwave energy remaining which can be coupled into the flame front. The benefits of the microwave assist are thus only realized in the early stages of combustion when the flame kernel is still near the spark electrode. Fig: Timing diagram for triggering of the spark event and microwave power supply The designers of the microwave-assisted spark system spectroscopically measured high levels of OH radicals during the microwave discharge event, concluding that electron-impact reactions with water molecules in the microwave plasma increase the pool of oxidizing radicals, enhancing the early stages of combustion through chemical effects. Why can't we fill diesel engines with petrol?

There are many reasons... 1.In diesel engine there is not spark plug provided, without spark plug petrol can't ignite. 2.In diesel engine compression ration high whereas in petrol engine compression ratio low. Something like these.petrol engine CR=8-12 Diesel engine CR=16-24 3.In diesel engine only air comes into cylinder first, than after diesel provide by fuel injector. So if we fill petrol in diesel engine than it get ignite fast due to compression because petrol burnt at very low temperature.so due to fast burning it increases knocking tendency and engine get vibrate with high frequency. Some many reasons also there, i will update after clear concepts.

What makes a internal combustion engine's spark plug work so fast?

The question is slightly ambiguous. Are you wondering how the spark plugs are able to discharge several thousand volts in the span of milliseconds? That would have to do with the chemistry of the dielectric in the spark plug and its breakdown characteristics. I'm not too knowledgeable about that. However, if you're wondering how an engine fires the spark plugs at high frequencies, then the simple answer would be: ,software and modern electronics., Aishvarya Kapoor,'s answer is partially accurate, in this regard. Most engines do not employ distributors anymore. Modern engine systems have an Engine Control Module/Unit that directly fires each ignition coil based on a calibrated firing order. Depending on various inputs, the ECM/ECU determines the best spark timing for the engine under any given condition. Spark pulses are, then, sent to the primary side of each ignition coil, as required, causing the spark plugs to fire. Individual signals to each ignition coil make the distributor redundant. The software in the ECM/ECU performs calculations on the order of milliseconds and pulses are sent out to the ignition coils at similar rates, resulting in an ignition system that can fire the spark plugs at the calibrated instant in an engine cycle.

What are the DIY Royal Enfield Bullet servicing hacks?

I am sure there are others but let me enumerate the ones that come to my mind right now. You can start with the following: Changing the engine oil,: I prefer to change the engine oil every 3000 kilometers. This is very easy to do and also the most important. However, you have to follow some best practices to get it right. One of them that I know is that you got to heat the engine a bit so that the viscosity of oil comes down and as a result of which it can easily come out of the engine. Cleaning the spark plug and carburetor,: This point is for all those who have a carburetor fitted engine and not one with EFI. You can clean the spark plug and carburetor once in a while. I do not know how to put a frequency to this but, I am sure there is one. This step can do away any misfire of engine if your vehicle suffers any. Just after the rainy season, draining the petrol tank might also be a good option as water might have seeped in the tank which can again cause a misfire. Air filter,: This one is the easiest. You can change the air-filter once you think it has worn out. I prefer to do this every one year. Approximately 15,000–20,000 kilometers. Chain and sprocket oiling,: This is the most important if you are to take the bike on cruising trip on a highway. If the chain and sprocket are not lubricated properly, the sprocket teeth are prone to get damaged under the chain load by fatigue. Hence get a sachet of 2T oil and lubricate the sprocket and chain properly. Washing,: Obviously right? You can wash you bike so that there are no dirt depositions on the bike which can cause scratches. You might choose to get teflon coating and coat the bike with that to make it shiny and to prevent any scratches on the body.
