Are there any companies that are still around today that were involved in the Holocaust?

A2A: ,Are there any companies that are still around today that were involved in the Holocaust? in The Holocaust The list of companies that benefitted from WWII Germany and the Holocaust, ,is long. The German companies that existed in WWII used slave labour, , and some even used prisoners as human guinea pigs. Noted examples are: Audi, (,Auto Union,),[37],: forced labour from concentration camps,,[37], ,Zyklon B, production. BASF,[9],[17],: collaborated with Degussa AG - now ,Evonik Industries, - and ,IG Farben, - to produce sodas used in ,Zyklon B, - utilized in ,Concentration Camps ,to commit mass murder. Bayer,[9],[14],: forced labour and medical experimentation in concentration camps,[15] BMW,[9],[38],[39],: forced labour from concentration camps,[40] Deutsche Bank,[9],[20],: Provided construction loans for ,Auschwitz Degussa AG (now ,Evonik Industries,),[7],[8],[9],: ,Zyklon B, pesticide production used for executions in ,gas chambers DEST,[51],: used slave labour. IG Farben,[3],: ,Zyklon B, main manufacturer. Krupp,[3],[4],[5], (now part of ,ThyssenKrupp,): ,Zyklon B, was produced by the company along with other ones. Mercedes-Benz, (as well as then owner, ,Daimler-Benz,),[9],[44],[45],: forced labour from concentration camps Porsche,[46],: forced labour ,[47] Siemens,[9],[12],[5],: forced labour ,[13] Steyr Arms,[55], (,Steyr,, Austria): forced labour in the ,Steyr-Münichholz subcamp Topf and Sons,[27],: designed, manufactured and installed crematoria for concentration and extermination camps. Volkswagen Group,[9],[46],[49],: forced labour from concentration camps ,[50] A little more surprising are non-German companies, for instance, IBM,, , which produced early electronica among them the computers that were used to keep the concentration and death-camps records. Barclays Bank,[1],[2],: (,City of London):, officials of the bank in France volunteered information to the Nazis about their Jewish employees during the ,Vichy, regime. Nestlé,[18],[19], (,Vevey,, Switzerland): benefitted from slave labour.

Are there any companies that are still around today that were involved in the Holocaust?

Yes. I G Farben. They manufactured the poison gas, Zyklon B, that was used to kill the Jewish people during the Shoah. Russian pows, Poles who could no longer work, we’re used for the first experiments. I G Farben is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Bayer Aspirin: This company used Jews during the Holocaust to test new drugs on. They were active in Auschwitz. They deliberately infected victims with disease to test emerging antibiotics on. They infected Jewish victims with TB, typhus, diphtheria Barklay’s Bank: volunteered information about their Jewish employees to the Vichy Government Evonik: Zyklon B Siemens: Used forced labor during the Holocaust Associated Press: Used censorship and cooperations with NAZI Germany BASF: Produced sodas used in Zyklon B Nestle: Benefitted from slave labor Dresdner Bank: Financed the building of Auschwitz Topf and Sons: Designed and installed crematoria in the extermination camps Coca Cola: Sold coke to Germany during the 3rd Reich’s rule Dehomag IBM: Provided computers to Nazi Gestapo to track arrests Audi: Used forced labor- Zyklon B production BMW: Forced labor from concentration camps Ford Germany: War materials Hugo Boss: Produced NAZI propaganda Mercedes Benz: forced labor from concentration camps Porche: Forced labor from concentration camps Volkswagen: forced labor from concentration camps DEST: Slave labor Swarovski: NAZI executive board Steyr Arms: forced labor

Why didn’t the Nazis use Jews as slaves instead of killing them?

They did. The Nazis wanted to rid their country and occupied areas of Jews and other people they deemed to be inferior. As the war dragged on, they realized Jews could be useful as slaves. This meant less money could be poured for labor. They ended up using Jews and other prisoners as slaves. This expanded into businesses that benefited the Nazis and the war effort. Nazi Germany signed thousands of Jews and other inferior people over to work for Audi. They were supervised by the SS. Conditions were terrible and some people died. Audi payed reparations for the survivors and the deceased families. BMW also received slave laborers. After WWII, they had to build kitchen equipment to stay in business since they were banned from building vehicles. They also payed reparations to the laborers and families. Mercedes was also on board. After Hitler poured money into them, buying luxury vehicles, laborers were sent over to them. They were famous for building troop transports for the Wehrmacht and SS. Reparations were paid. Porsche also jumped on board. Received slave laborers. Porsche was good friends with Hitler. To save money, they used Jews that had experience. Reparations were also paid out after the war. Siemens also used slave laborers. Not sure if reparations were paid out. Hugo Boss did NOT design the uniforms for the Nazis. They only manufactured them. They also used Jews and other slaves for uniformity. I’m not sure if they paid reparations as well, but they regret it and apologized with said companies. Bayer AG used slave laborers and Nazi chemists. They were involved in the Holocaust and even sold Zyklon B to the Nazis. The gas that was used to murders millions of Jews. I’m not sure if reparations were paid but reports were made that they denied their involvement. Mauser used slave laborers as well. They built the best bolt action rifle design of all time. I’m not sure if they paid reparations, but they apologized and regret their past as the other companies. Walther also used slave laborers. Not sure if they paid reparations. But they apologized and regret their past. There are countless businesses who used slaves. These are just a few. Slaves were valuable to the Nazis. They did have to be under a certain payroll. They simply worked for their life, until they couldn’t work anymore. Auschwitz II was a concentration/death camp. They used slaves but also murdered them. Nazi Germany had an organized plan for what to do with useful Jews instead of killing them. Keeping them alive was in their favor, until they killed them and replaced them with healthier Jews. This shouldn’t ever be forgotten…

What are some of the long-term contributions the Nazis made to Germany?

When you look at the other answers here you can see that there is a natural desire to vilify the Nazis. They WERE evil on every single level. But a tool doesn't know that it is being used for evil, and the Nazis have indeed contributed a great deal to the world and to Germany, whether people want to admit it or not. If this were NOT true, then there would have been no Operation Paperclip and a race to capture, exonerate and employ Nazi scientists and engineers, no matter how evil they were. Here is a case in point. Every four years we have runners carrying the Olympic torch around the world. This was an idea started and implemented by Hitler to promote Germany. Still being used today, doesn't matter that the most evil man of the last 100 years at least invented it. The Autobahn system in Europe was the design and implementation of Albert Speer, probably the smartest and highest ranking non-military Nazi of the regime. It cannot be denied that he was a brilliant, forward-thinking engineer and architect. It was the work of the Nazis who put Americans on the moon. Our moon program was run by Wernher von Braun, a hardcore, unrelenting Nazi who used Jewish slave labor to build the world's first ballistic missile. If he had not been so badly desired by the US government, there is a good chance he would have been hung for war crimes. Ulrich Rudel was the most decorated military man in all of Nazi Germany. He was an aviator with an unparalleled record of air assault. He even sank a battleship with a tiny plane. And yet, he was also one of the contributors and designers of the American A-10 Warthog ground attack/support fighter jet we admire so much and use so much today. The term "assault rifle" was coined by Adolf Hitler himself. The term is still used today, but not only that, the assault rifle itself was an invention of the Nazis. Every single full auto military rifle in every country today -- the M-16, the AK-47, the HK MP5, Galil, etc, etc all are the results of the invention of the Kurz Cartridge by the Germans/Nazis. Other guns, like the Thompson or the Uzi and the PPSH, are just machine-pistols, that is short range full auto weapons that shoot a pistol cartdridge. The USS Nautilus, the first atomic sub, was designed based on captured Type XXI German U-boats. The Germans had no nuclear propulsion but there were many other features, from streamlining to stealth coatings that were developed by the Nazis and used by other nations. As far as warfare is concerned, there are so many advances implemented by the Nazis that it is difficult to count them all. One that we seem so impressed by today is precision guided missiles with cameras on them, directing them right to the target. We were impressed to see missiles go right through the windows of buildings in Iraq and blow them -- but the Germans/Nazis invented that and were using it against the Russians. The Germans/Nazis also advanced solar power, making huge advances in the development and efficiency of solar panels. The Nazis invented a standard locomotive and built them by the thousand -- they are still being used throughout Europe today, 70 years after manufacture. Opel still manufactures trucks widely used in Europe. Bayer and IG Farben, the maker of Zyklon B, the gas used to kill the Jews, are still making pharmaceuticals that help millions if not billions. Krupp still makes steel for ships and weapons. Audi is really the old Auto-Union and a few other bankrupt vehicle companies that consolidated to make cars (that's why their logo is 4 rings -- 4 Nazi vehicle makers combined to make Audi). Mercedes made trucks and cars for the Nazis, and they are still making among the best vehicles in the world. The Germans/Nazis advanced medicine, creating the most effective malarial medicines still used today, and many of the drawings in "Gray's Anatomy", the standard text used by medicos today, were drawn using unwilling Jewish and other prisoners. There was a controversy as to whether the book should be pulled from publication because of its grisly origins. I am not a Nazi sympathizer or a proponent of Fascism or any kind of Nazi apologist, but it's ridiculous to try and pretend things are not as they are. Tools do not care who invents them or where they come from. The value of tools is in how they are used by good people to advance society, no matter their origin.

What are some interesting facts about WWII?

Please note I am answering this question in the eyes of an American. When I refer to “we” or “us” I am referring to the United States. The most interesting fact I find around the phenomena around WWII in college, is conflating Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, WWII, and the Holocaust. In reality those were three separate events completely unrelated to each other. There are many books you can read on this subject, and I may give some recommendations. Historian Peter Hitchens wrote a great book called ,“The Phoney Victory: The World War II Illusion”,, published in 2018. First I think it’s unfair that you are painted as an apologist for just reporting history as it happened. Hitler was a ruthless dictator and was responsible for the starvation and genocide of Jews and minorities to the tune of millions in forced labor camps. However history is never so pleasant, so clear cut, or one sided. The most amazing realization that I learned about the Second World War was that, ,there was no clear winner to WWII. 1.) Japan bombed Pearl Harbor after we invaded their territory During World War I the United States was allied with Japan. In 1917 President Woodrow Wilson signed the ,Lansing–Ishii Agreement, which promised to give Japan rights to oil fields and resources in the South China Sea which included Vietnam and Laos which we were not involved in at that point. The United States built Japan’s first submarines, ships, and Air Force fleet. When President Roosevelt stepped into office he became the first President to become hostile towards Japanese after they declared occupation of Vietnam, because Roosevelt wanted to open trade with China. At the time the Japanese were fighting against the Soviets as well. He did this by invading the sovereign Kingdom Of Hawaii by enslaving the natives, and moved our military base from San Diego to Oahu despite knowing it would quite possibly put our troops in harms way. President Roosevelt then put an embargo on steel, aluminum, other metals and ores, and petroleum to Japan, and instructed Douglas MacArthur to build a new military in the Philippines which were allied with the Chinese against the Japanese. FDR was hoping he could play the middle man and avoid conflicts with both empires, but the Japanese feeling strangled of resources attacked Hawaii out of necessity to regain control of the region and so they would not be defeated by the communist Chinese. From September through October Roosevelt’s staff intercepted reports of a bombing threat that was going to target Pearl Harbor. It was never forwarded to Admiral Husband E. Kimmel and General Walter Short and historians can only speculate why, and not to claim that there was any deliberate attempt to conceal information but it was on record a large failure of intelligence. Newspapers throughout the country reported in the weeks prior that a possible attack was coming. It was not a surprise and not even the least bit. We should have been prepared. Likewise following the attacks FDR declared war on Japan and then forced all Americans of Japanese decent into forced labor camps after their homes and bank accounts were confiscated and never returned. Hence why they received reparations. This tempted the Japanese to align with the axis powers and created the World War. Prior to FDR declaring war on Japan, those were two separate conflicts. It led to the nuking of civilians in the largest city in Japan not once but twice with the help of former Nazi scientists, which created the arms race after we allied with a communist nation and supported their own labor camps and gas chambers and allowed them to enslave half of Germany. This created the Cold War which almost led us to nuclear annihilation had it not been for Kennedy in office who refused to go to war with Cuba. The Cold War led to proxies such as Korean and Vietnam Wars and destabilized the Middle East. Yes the Japanese took thousands of American lives, but it was instigated by the American invasion. If Hoover won a second term there very likely would have never been a Japanese bombing, as we would not have invaded Hawaii and there would have been no WWII. 2.) America did not enter WWII to save the Jews A lot of folklore is being taught in American social studies classrooms in the 21st century. Many Americans are told that the evil monster Adolph Hitler were enslaving a race of people, so the Americans entered and saved the day from the evil Germans with mustaches and liberated the Jews. That is so inaccurate and I don't know where to begin. The first thing I would say is, Adolph Hitler was our guy. We created, funded, encouraged, and supported the rise of Adolph Hilter in Germany. After all we encouraged him into power after we went to war with Germany and wiped out the originally Germany that existed from 1634–1918 after the collapse of the Catholic Roman Empire, which at the time was a center of science and humanities, while music and art flourished. Before the first war they had surpassed the British Empire in industrial output. The west put in place a completely unstable democracy called the Weimar Republic that lasted less than two decades. American and British companies and political leaders then sat back, funded, and promoted Adolph Hitler to power. While at the same time trading back and fourth during the third reich. This included ,Coca, ,Cola,, ,Volkswagen,,, ,Ford,,, ,General Motors,,, ,Barclays,,, ,IBM,,, ,Audi, ,(produced Zyklon B gas,). You have to remember folks, Hitler rose to power in 1933. America did not enter Germany until the next decade later. He was completely unopposed by the majority of Americans, which at the time many of whom were German and Italian decent. Before the war there were thousands of Germanic schools in the United States, Germanic shops, Germanic speaking states, and regions of the country that made up over 60% of German immigrants. Many Italian American communities supported Mussolini. The “Heil Hitler” sign we practiced for our flags as did Britain. We modeled Germany after western nations and many don’t know this. However most photographs of this history have been taken offline. Removing this symbol took away that feeling that both sides were alike. Then we could dehumanize the Germans in cartoons. U.S Senator Burton K. Wheeler saluting the flag in 1941. Below is a photograph of thousands of students at UC Berkley on April 19th, 1940 participating in one-day peace strike protesting the United States entering WWII. At the peak of America’s anti-war movement, there were close to one million members which joined the ,America First Committee,. At its peak the ,Socialist Party of America, had 19,000 members in 1940 They actually felt betrayed by FDR the leader of socialist labor activists. About half of the country was split as to whether we should fight Hitler. Many mainstream media publications actually viewed Adolph Hitler in a favorable light. He was Times Magazine Person Of The Year in 1938. There’s some questionability surrounding the Royal Family’s ties. The Vatican Church solely endorsed Hitler’s rise to power under Pope Pius XII in secret. He was asked to host the Olympics in 1936, and asked to host a Worlds Fair in 1939. When we did finally enter the war the British had already been fighting and winning for three whole years. Our main objective was to give the Soviets Germany. During that time period we did not attack, shoot at, invade, or bomb one concentration camp or destroy Germany’s railroads or bridges even though our military knew about them up to three years beforehand. All American companies and banks continued to profit by feeding both sides of the war which included concentration camps. However strikingly similar things happened right on our own shores we never like to bring up. German shop owners in Time Square had to label their shops as “German shops”, and remove all items made in Germany. The sale of Hummels, dishes, and jewelry made from that country was banned. Germans were afraid of speaking in their native tongue in fear they would be detained like the Japanese and bank accounts seized. This involved massive book burning events at school across America written in German language, and German hunting parties where they where Americans were tarred and feathered. After WWII many German Heritage Language Schools opened up across the country in attempt to bring back German culture that was once so prevalent in our American society dating back to our founders. During this time period anti-war activists in America were labeled as “enemy aliens” and taken in as political prisoners which included Eugene Debs in the last war. During both WWI and WWII it was made illegal to be a German National living in the United States under FDR’s ,Proclamation 2526,. On August 23rd, 1993 under a FOI request, the Immigration and Naturalization Service released that there were at least a total of close to 70 locations in 49 states that were used as forced labor camps which housed over 11,507 German Americans during and after the war including their wives and children until 1948. If you include the over 100,000 Japanese prisoners, over 3,000 died from disease at these camps. Many of these Americans were deported to Germany. Germans compromised of 36.1% of all internments held in America. They also held 1,881 Italian Americans in camps. To this day the federal government has only apologized to Japanese prisoners. They looked like this below… Perhaps the most jarring account of the war is understanding that Hitler’s main goal was restoring the German territory lost during WWI. It is true that Hitler’s army invaded Poland, but at the same exact time the Soviets invaded Poland. Americans chose to pick sides with the Soviets instead and it could have went either way. Americans and English could have chosen to align with Hitler to bring down the Soviet Union, and if Pearl Harbor never happened it would have been a complete toss up. That is incredible to think about, seeing over half of the country before Pearl Harbor viewed we should not get involved and keep Hitler in power. At this time a total of ten peace deals were offered by Adolph Hitler to call off the war, if the allies would give Germany’s original land back. Britain refused each one. I couldn’t believe the day I learned about the allies targeted bombing of Dresden and taking the lives of 25,000 German civilians. Of course that was payback for the Blitz bombings. It just went to show you that war is a bloody battle and both sides and guilty of wrongful sin. After the war is where everything went wrong. First in the way the Eisenhower treated German soldiers and their families after the war, and the transition of power of Germany to the Soviets. The United States Army Medical Department published in 1969 by Lieutenant General Leonard D. Heaton found that by dissolving the German and Swiss Red Cross out of monitoring and feeding supplies, keeping prisoners out in open with no shelter from rain or cold temperatures, and underreporting food requirement, Eisenhower's policies led to at least 6,000 prisoners including wives and children to starvation and dehydration. Some estimates go higher. However we had among the best survival rates for internment camps. Many were also transported to Soviet camps were they were treated much worse conditions with much higher fatality rate. Remember these were German soldiers and not SS Nazis which were tried at the Nuremberg Trials. It broke every international law and it was allowed to happen because Eisenhower labeled German prisoners as Disarmed Enemy Forces, ,instead of POW’s. 35% of ethnic German POW’s died in the hands of the Soviets passed away from starvation. An official total tally of one million ethnic Germans that were kept in concentration camps in Siberia and Central Asia,, ,381,067 died including wives and children. Also 425,000 German soldiers were kept in 700 concentration camps across the United States for up to four years after the war violating Geneva Convention. So after the war we gave away half of the region to the Soviets, which ended up building a wall under the Kennedy administration. We allied with a nation that also had used gas chambers and gas vans during the Great Purge from 1936–1938 that killed 1.2 million ethnic Germans, the first in Europe to use them. Believe it or not, the United States also has gas chambers. In fact, America was the first country in the world to utilize gas chambers for prisoners and we still use the same gas the Nazis used hydrogen cyanide. We are the only country left in the world other than North Korea that has death penalty by gas. Conclusion: I guess the point of me saying all of this would be that, there was no great victory that came out of either world wars. Defeating Adolph Hitler did not make the world a more peaceful place. 3.3 million inhabitants of Soviet Ukraine who died in 1932 and 1933 were victims of a deliberate killing policy related to nationality. 1 million executed out of ethnic cleansing during the Great Purge. 1.6 million prisoners didn’t make it out of Stalin’s Gulag. Korea was still divided, and Mao’s China was now empowered with Japan out of the way. After Japan abandoned Vietnam it split Indo-China in half, resulting in a decades long proxy war with an estimated 1.3 million casualties. The decision to further bomb Japan resulted in the arms race that almost resulted in all out nuclear war two decades later. The world was such a dangerous place during that time period, and I would argue it was in large part because of a series of bad decisions made on the part of Britain and United States in instigating war during both World Wars. In other words, way more could have been done to prevent the bloodshed that happened. It’s literally one of the worst atrocities in world history on both sides, and the rights of Americans at home were violated in unimaginable ways. The story of the anti-war movement around both World Wars deserves to be told. Western powers and corporations 100% escalated both wars and did nothing to stop the bloodshed and turmoil once it started. It took the rest of the century to fix the errors and mistakes one administration made.
