How can India beat China in their back foot?

Read the incident till the end to know where we are lacking and what is stopping us from defeating China in every manner. Bajaj Auto HR Head says: This is about an industry where China has been beaten by India. Year 1983, I pass out of Engineering college in Mumbai considered to be one of the best. Irrespective of the branch that you have studied—Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Production, Textile, 80% become coders for the software industry. Year 2000, I am at Bajaj Auto as HR head (after working for 15 years as a technical person), and am off to conduct campus interviews, to hire 100 Engineers who will build the 100-cc engine of a motorcycle. I am day 5 in VJTI and all other RECs. I end up hiring 10 people from 15 colleges. In every college I am told by the Training and Placement officer (TPO) that technology companies get preference. I say I don’t understand, is building an Engine not technology? No that’s manufacturing. Writing Cobal code for a bank in New York by a TCS employee is technology. > Next year I write to all colleges. I want to be day 0 in your campus. I will give three times salary of the best “so called technology company”, but only if I am day 0. Hiring 100 Engineers at three times salary was no problem for me as compared to TCS, which had to hire 2000 “Bodies”. They could never match that salary. > And that’s how Bajaj Auto built its R&D. Batch by Batch. Making designing and manufacturing of motorcycles sexy and paying for it. The selection ratio was 1:15. Most of the IITS, RECS, and VJTIS had toppers who were absolutely useless. They could not draw a Carnot cycle, could not tell the difference between a diesel and petrol engine. Give them an elevation and plan they could not draw the side view. Most of them were focusing on writing code. But we found gems, we found guys who were passionate and knowledgeable but could not express in English. I started conducting interviews in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and so on. > There was another company doing the same TVS. South based they also built a great R&D. > Year 2005, Chinese motorcycles attacked India with products which were 30% cheaper. Many dealers started selling them. Press predicted demise of Indian manufacturers. Within 6 months they went broke. Their quality was no match to Indian motorcycles. They never came back again. > Bajaj then stared attacking them in Africa. Africans had two choices; buy expensive Japanese motorcycles or cheap Chinese. Chinese motorcycles used to come in a box. You buy the box and take it to a mechanic and he will assemble it. In Nigeria motorcycles are used as taxis. So no one is going to pay you a dime more. In such a market Bajaj launched it’s fully assembled motorcycle. Priced more than Chinese less than Japanese. And worked hard. Today Bajaj is a market leader. TVS is number two. Chinese have been driven out. You can see videos of the love that the Okada (taxi drivers) have for Bajaj Bikes. Country by Country in Africa, in South America Indians captured the market driving the Chinese out. > In 2018 India became the largest manufacturer of two wheelers in the world (twice the size of China). Indian companies have started buying out European Brands. The market leader of motorcycles in Europe is not BMW, its KTM owned by Bajaj. China is slipping fast not only in the manufacturing of Bikes also in the manufacturing of components. Indian suppliers are beating them hands down. Between three Indian Companies Hero, Bajaj and TVS India today dominates the world market. Honda a Japanese company has shifted most of it’s R&D to India. > Why was this not done in TVs, in Computers, in Mobile phones, in Pharmaceuticals and other industries? The same country, the same labor laws, the same infrastructure but not the same entrepreneurs. Indian businessmen are characterized by a myopic vison—it’s both short term as well as geographically limited. Of course, the government also does not help. So, who is responsible for the Chinese dominance—the government, the people or the Corporates? > I think its all the three. When even ITI trained turners and fitters refuse to work in a shop floor, when a Stock Broker is paid more than an Engineer, when typing code is mistaken for technology, when governments refuse to amend antique labor and land laws when corporates think local and not global and finally when you, yes you, will not send your son to work on the shop floor, each one of this factor is as responsible for the Chinese dominance as much as their “Ethical Corruption” We have been looted because we left our doors and windows open......" It is high time that we should become self reliant and choose talented and practical knowledge holders over academics toppers. We can and we will beat any country by learning a lesson from this story and implementing it in a positive manner. Image- Google Source of Story- Whatsapp Group Edit1- thank you all, this answer has got 500+ upvotes and I am happy that everyone is sharing their own thoughts and experience which is definitely going to help us in longer term

Why does BMW use the E90 type of names?

Like many other car manufacturers, BMW has a production code for describing the different car series and body styles. The BMW E90 is a 3 series sedan built between 2005 and 2013. Before that a 3 series sedan would be an E46, before that an E36 and before that an E30. These production codes are helpful because BMW does not change their model names very often. A BMW 325i ca be an E30 (made between 1986 and 1992) or an E46 (made between 1999 and 2005). The production code is very elaborate: An E90 is a four door sedan, an E91 is a four door station wagon, an E92 is a two door coupé and an E93 is a convertible. So, when looking for spare parts for your car, it is essential to know not only its model name, but also its production code.

Is an E93 M3 a bad first car for a teenager?

It all depends what his driving skill level is at. How many BMW Performance Driving classes has he attended? Does he have a racing license? How many hours on the track does he have? Can he diagnose and repair common BMW Error codes? If your answer to most of those questions is a no, or none, then $15k for a first car is a lot already. The E93 M3 is a great car, even for a first car… but it is for driving enthusiasts, not for casual drivers that think they can drive fast. Maintenance on any M3 costs a lot more than a standard BMW, even compared to the 330i or 335i The only M3 with low low-end torque is the E30 M3, where you’d need to get to about 4000rpm to get decent torque. All M3s after that have loads of low-end torque. The lack of wheel spin has nothing to do with lack of torque and more to do with the electronic aids that prevent it during launch. That’s another thing. There are a bunch of novice drivers out there that feel like all these new electronic systems somehow magically defy the laws of physics. They don’t. Period. Your brakes won’t stop ‘on a dime’ if you don’t react in time. Your DSC and XDrive cannot do a 90 degree turn at 60mph. Braking distance for the M3 from 60–0 is about 100ft, in controlled tests. add about 50ft of ‘reaction time’ to that and the BEST drivers in an M3 will stop in about 150ft. Average drivers add another 40ft. That means that in an emergency, an average driver will still plow through another car, pedestrian or wall even in an M3 with performance brakes. But I’m never one to deny someone else the pleasure of driving/owning a BMW… get him a used MANUAL 320i or 325i for about $5k. ,Fly him to Spartanburg, SC or Thermal, CA for BMW Driving school. ,Then let him save the rest for the M3 he can buy AFTER he attends the M and Advanced M classes.

Why is the US BMW plant located in South Carolina instead of a less expensive state in the middle/west of the country when their biggest US market is CA?

It’s a balancing act. The state that buys the most BMWs is Florida., then Texas. South Carolina sounds like a good center of gravity. CA may mean California to you, but it’s also the country code for Canada. Look up ”.CA” on Wiki. The only cars BMW builds at their South Carolina plant are SUVs. And Canada buys a lot of them. It’s not about making cars. It’s about making the stuff that goes into cars. It’s called “final assembly” and that means labor costs. So why would a car maker want to move to California, unless you’re Tesla, taking over a “distressed asset” abandoned Chevy plant in Fremont, where the final assembly cost is among the least of their cost worries. When BMW first set up that South Carolina plant, (about 25 years ago) there were lots of unemployed textile workers, and BMW paid $40K to start. Even for direct labor. The main thing is to get the heavy stuff sourced locally. Rreight cost has something to do with that. Not many steel mills in California last time I checked, but SUVs are indeed big in North America. Plus, California has that anti-heavy-industry thing going on. For evidence, why did Tesla put their true heavy-industry battery plant in Nevada, and why does Honda build cars in Ohio, and why does Mercedes build cars in Alabama, and why does Toyota build trucks in Texas, and also move their development center to Texas as well. For that matter, why does Apple build Cupertino-designed iPhones at Foxconn in China. Could it be California’s oppressive individual income tax? You think? So, here’s my request: Would the last heavy-industry company in California please turn out the lights? PG&E needs relief on their over-stressed network, so that their transformers won’t blow up and will not start so many forest fires. Let all Californians just do design work, or write code, or work for service industries that support those designers and code-heads. Until that gets out-sourced to India or Luxembourg of Bulgaria or wherever. Or maybe make whine (I meant wine). Sprechen sie UNIX. OK, forget about imbedded systems, are you a “Full stack developer”? Not so much? Well then, sprechen sie SWIFT? Because if you don’t, in California, you are (generally) helping those that do, and they write code for stuff that’s built elsewhere. See the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, or the Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany, and go to the manufacturer’s pavilion, and look for the California companies that actually manufacture stuff. Wear comfortable shoes, because you’ll be doing a lot of walking in your search!

Advice: what should a fresh high school graduate know about taxes that the public school system failed to prepare them for?

I give a lot of advice to my children on this topic. My advice is simply that taxes will be their biggest expense in life. I add that, as they become more successful, taxes will take an ever bigger piece. Depending on State of residence, marginal income tax rates are over 40% for moderately high earners in addition to about 7.5% for Social Security and Medicare (twice that for the self-employed). Annual Property taxes range from a few tenths of a percent of fair market value to several percent in some really high tax areas. Fresh high school graduates are unlikely to be in a position to pay high income or property taxes (exception: Connecticut assesses personal property tax on automobiles. A graduate who buys a new BMW with his first paycheck will get nicked for $200 to over a $1000 per year depending upon city of residence.). Nonetheless, decisions about where to live made at age 18 can often result in a lifetime of high taxes. A good example of this is military pay. A resident of New York who signs up and is then deployed to, say, Texas must still pay NY income tax. Conversely, a resident of Texas who is deployed to NY is not required to pay NY income tax as long as he retains Texas legal residency. This provision applies to the spouse as well. Property taxes need careful scrutiny. In, say, California, property tax is about 1.25% of purchase price statewide. Some of my neighbors in CA are paying one tenth of what I pay because they bought their properties thirty years ago. Many other States re-set rates annually. In CT and MA, rates are set town by town. A $500,000 house in one town might pay $3500/year while in another it could $10,000 or even $15,000. Keep in mind that a difference of $10,000 in tax would pay the interest on an additional $200,000 in mortgage loan (and would more likely be deductible as well!). Then there is Capital Gains tax, exise tax, sales tax… The tax code is Byzantine (reportedly over 60,000 pages) and changes somewhat every year. Few people like to take the time to study relevant portions but failure to do so can be costly.

Has a company/store ever treated you so awfully that you refuse to do business with them again? What happened?

I serviced my BMW in the local BMW dealer. I stored there also my winter and summer tyres. Few weeks before the changing time, I got a call from the dealer telling me that my winter tyres are worn up and the profile is low. I thought that this is strange, the car was two years old and I drove a total ca. 40 000 km. In the past, I drove more than 100 000 km without changing tyres. Each tyre has a code with the production date so I drove to the dealer and asked to see the tyres. The year of the tyres was 3 years before I bought them but the dealers are not allowed to sell tyres which are older than one year. I said the dealers that he has two options, to find my tyres (or equivalents) or I will sue him. They found the tyres but and I still drive BMWs (20 years after) but never use this dealer for service. Another case In the 90-ies I had to fly to Madrid to announce a new processor. I had a business class ticket for Iberia and hand luggage only. When I tried to check -in the agent told me that without checked luggage I can check-in at the gate (at this time it was allowed in Frankfurt). At the gate, there was a long queue and when I reached the agent she told me that the plane is overbooked and Iberia will fly me to Barcelona and in Barcelona, an agent will help me with the flight to Madrid. The only available seat was in economy, so I flew economy on a Business ticket. Nobody waited for me in Barcelona then after a few minutes I lost my temper and started to shout which created some reaction. Finally, I arrived in Madrid six hours late, missed the working dinner with the local sales director. Since this incident, I flew several hundred times, mainly business or first class but newer with Iberia.

Can an off-duty police officer driving his own car stop you and arrest you if you overtook him speeding?

Technically yes, but the officer would be an idiot if he did so. Speeding is an infraction, and typically not an arrestable offense. One day I was working as the station watch deputy when we received a frantic 911 call. The caller said a maniac was chasing him on the freeway at a high rate of speed, and he had exited the freeway. The suspect was still chasing him, yelling things the caller couldn’t make out. He was a few blocks away from the station, and was given directions to the station. The caller drove his BMW to the station, and the suspect surprisingly followed him into the station parking lot, where another deputy and I were waiting. It turns out the suspect was an off duty CHP officer. He was trying to stop the caller because he said his lights were illegal, and the guy was speeding in the car pool lane (and was the only occupant of the car). These are all infractions. The CHP officer had called his CHP station in an effort to get the guy stopped, and was following him to keep units apprised of his location. When he exited the freeway, he got next to the caller and yelled at him to pull over while flashing his CHP badge. The caller claims he didn’t see the badge, and if he had, how would he know if it was real or not? The officer was in his “POV” (privately owned vehicle). I called the CHP station and confirmed the off duty officer’s story. They dispatched an on duty CHP officer and supervisor to my station, and they eventually cited the guy for whatever violation the off duty officer saw. I believe the off duty CHP officer created a more dangerous situation, by far, than what he was trying to solve (and told him so). So while he had the authority to do so, if was foolhardy to try. Anyway, in CA at least, a peace officer doesn’t lose his or her peace officer “powers” when they clock out at the end of their shift. They’re merely no longer being paid to enforce the laws at that point but still could if necessary. However, trying to take enforcement action on a vehicle code infraction while in a regular car, while not in uniform, can be problematical. Simply making a phone call is the wiser choice.

Have you ever seen somebody be mugged? What did you do?

Yes! Alright, the year was 1992. I was living in Albany, Ca, which is right next door to Berkely, Ca. There was a bank right across the street from a liquor store next to where we lived. I had just smoke a fat blunt of the Chronic with my friends and I went down to the pay phone at the liquor store to call my brother. As I’m on the phone, I see a green minivan pull up across the street, quite aggressively. A youth gets out and runs up to the guy at the ATM with a gun in his hand. He points the gun at the guy and demands he hands over the money he just took out. The guy gives him the money, and as the youth ran back to the minivan, he fired a shot into the sidewalk. BAM! I said to my brother, “I gotta call 911.” and hung up on him. I then dialed 911 and got the operator. 911 Op:, Hello, 911, what’s your emergency? Me,: A guy just got held up at the bank on San Pablo Ave and “Can’t Remember” Street. 911 Op:, Ok. Does he have a gun? Is anyone hurt? Me: ,He has a gun and fired it at the ground, but no one is hurt. He went back into a green minivan that he got out of and are now heading south on Kaines Ave. They’ll probably take a right at the next street and hop right on the freeway.” 911 Op:, Okay, we are sending units now, if you are safe please stay on the line. Remember, I am super baked, but the adrenaline took control and I was suddenly clear headed! I then called out to the guy who just got mugged. He was about 20 and just started to get back in his car very nonchalant like. “Hey,” I yelled out, “The cops are on the way. “What?” he replied, “You didn’t need to call the cops.” There must’ve been some Albany PD close by because we heard sirens and they were there in a flash. The separated myself and the guy who got robbed and started the interview process when they got a call over the radio saying that they were in pursuit of the green minivan. The cop looked at us both and said, “Hurry up! Get in!” to which we followed his instructions. Off we went, Code 3, lights and sirens blaring and I am really, really stoned and starting to remember that I am really, really stoned. We could hear over the radio that they had chased the car into the BMW plant, then they ran across the street and into the frisbee golf course where they were apprehended. The squad car we were in pulled up to a scene of the two dudes that were chased. I only was able to recognize one, the guy who held the gun, because the other guy was in the car the whole time. They put those two in two different cars, handcuffed and all that. Then they took us to the station and got our statements there. This kid that got mugged was a really clean cut college kid and I looked like a hippie stoner with long hair and a beard. Every cop that came into that room thanked the other guy for the incredible directions given on the 911 call. “We couldn’t have gotten them without your help!” they crowed. Then I would stand up and say thank you, to which they looked at me in surprise. Stupid hippie… Anyways, the next day I get to work, which is on the other side of the Berkely hills in Pacheco. I tell my boss the story and he can’t believe it. The guy who got mugged was his daughters’ boyfriend and he had already heard the story from the night before. What?!? Wow! He actually gave me a very small raise and told me he was proud of me. After that I received a plaque in the mail, stating what had happened and how brave I was to call 911 while in plain sight of the perpetrators. I need to find that plaque…
