Review Q&A citroen ds 1970

Why not have headlights on cars that turn with the steering wheel so you can see where you are going?

As the others have answered, some modern cars already have it, but ,Don Sutton, has answered it with most probably the best application of headlights that turn with the steering wheel on a pre-70 car, the French made Citroen DS (1967). Those lights pivot as much as 80°, unlike on newer cars likc Citroen C5, which only pivot to 15°. At speed, this will make no difference, but at low speed and large amounts of lock - such as a hairpin bend or a gate - it will make a BIG difference. The main difference, however, between original and current systems is in the actuation. On the original DS system, the steering was connected to the lights by a system of wires and rods. On the re-invented system it is computer controlled. But the best looking swiveling headlight system must go to the next model of Citroen, the SM (1970), which happened to be my favorite classic car. With six Cibie headlights (2 of which pivot depending on steering lock), it was one of the best and futuristic looking cars of its time. Too bad the US version of SM looks like this, without swiveling headlights. Damiano Roosmin's answer to What are some of the classiest and best looking cars from 1900 to 1970?

Which classic car will never be dated?

Classic cars “mark the date,” so they are by nature dated. However their style becomes timeless, because of the execution, popularity and general acceptance. There are a very few cars which were so far ahead of their time, that they could almost appear to be current today, even though they were first designed decades ago. Two of those come to mind… This is the Studebaker Avanti. It was first offered in 1962, and its styling was decades ahead of anything else built at the time. It pioneered the 4-seat sports coupe a full 2–1/2 years before the Mustang and Barracuda. It was the first American full production car with front disc brakes and the V8 engine was available with an optional supercharger. The car broke 29 Bonneville speed records and had an unmistakable aerodynamic profile. The car was still produced after Studebaker closed, and was manufactured through 2006. The Citroën DS and SM models. French cars are not known to be paragons of virtue. They’re usually cheap, quirky, noisy, uncomfortable and unreliable. However these two Citroën models were a huge exception to those rules. To begin with, the vehicles were incredibly low and aerodynamic, with low frontal areas and clean sweeping lines. They were also far beyond their time. The DS model shown below featured high-mounted taillights, integrated headlight covers and was designed by automotive designing legend; Bertoni. It was first produced in 1955 and was kept in production until 1975. It featured a hydro-pneumatic self-leveling ride system, where the car would always ride level, and would correct for lean in corners. It also featured radial tires, when introduced in 1955. The ride of the DS was considered exceptional, when it was first introduced in 1955. The Citroën SM was even more advanced in its construction, design, ride and performance. The ride was so smooth and balanced, that it was the personal sports coupe of choice for many European dignitaries and celebrities throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. They were amazing cars…

Why did Australia have rear-wheel drive cars for a much longer time than the United States?

Why did Australia have rear-wheel drive cars for a much longer time than the United States? Are you sure about that? Front wheel drive arrived in Australia in the 1950s with the import or local assembly of Citroen cars, notably the “Traction Avant”. Not too many came, since the model was changed in 1956 or 57. Citroen Traction Avant (1934-1957) This was followed in the Australian market by the Citroen DS series which were sold here until 1975. Citroën DS - Wikipedia In 1960 or 61 the Morris Mini appeared in Australia. Massive success. Mini - Wikipedia A later, larger model was the Morris 1100, very popular with those who did not care about 6 or 8 cylinder engines. Very smooth ride from a hydraulic suspension and locally assembled. BMC ADO16 - Wikipedia Soon after came the Austin 1800, known as the “land crab”. Bigger again and faster than the 1100, it would cruse all day at 100 kph or a bit over. A bastard to reverse park because of the heavy engine and gears over the front wheels and no power steering. Sneered at in it’s day because it was ugly. Locally assembled. BMC ADO17 - Wikipedia In 1970 the Australia and New Zealand only Austin Tasman and Kimberley were introduced but were only produced for about 3 years. My father had one, it was OK but not as good a car as the 1800s were. Austin Kimberley - Wikipedia What market penetration did front wheel drive cars have in the USA in 1966? I remember when the Oldsmobile Toronado was introduced in the USA it was regarded as radical I will bet that there were proportionately far more front wheel drive cars in Australia right from 1966 on.

Can we use drum brakes for all the wheels of a car at the place of a disk brake?

OK, I am a gear head who has owned performance cars and built blueprinted engines since the 1960’s. I just came in from replacing the calipers and discs and brake hoses on my truck. Yes, of course we could used drum brakes on the wheels of a car in place of disc brakes. Until Jaguar popularized aircraft-type disc brakes on a race car with the Jaguar C-Type in 1953 and Citroen DS put disc brakes into mass production for a passenger car, all cars used drum brakes on all four wheels. (Yes, I am aware of the Lanchester experiment and the Crosley Hot Shot, and Chrysler’s attempt at expanding discs, etc.) American cars used drum brakes until the 1970’s, when some cars offered optional disc brakes for the front wheels. Four wheel disc brakes became the norm on better cars around 1990. But less expensive cars and most pickup trucks used the cheaper front disc/rear drum arrangement. This is still common today on inexpensive cars. Moreover, drum brake systems are still used on heavy trucks. Drum brakes used to be the norm for passenger cars. I still have tools for adjusting the brake shoes and removing and remounting the springs for those systems. However, disc brake systems have a lot of advantages that the best drum systems cannot overcome. The biggest advantage that disc brakes have over drum brakes involves dissipation of heat. When a brake is used to slow a car it converts the rotating energy of the wheel into heat energy. This heat energy must be gotten rid of. If it is allowed to build up, for example if the brakes are repeatedly used hard or used continuously (say going down a mountain grade) they built up heat will cause the brakes to “fade”, that is their stopping ability will first diminish and then disappear altogether. Not good. Manufacturers of drum brakes attempted to solve this problem by casting fins around the outside perimeter of the brake drum, thereby exposing more surface area to the outside air. Often on more expensive cars these fins, which surrounded the machined iron brake drum, were cast in aluminum, a metal with a greater heat conductivity than iron, in an attempt to augment the cooling effect of the fins. But drum brakes, by their very design, TRAP heat, the brake shoes are incased within the hot brake drum. On disc brakes, in contrast, every inch of the heat absorbing disc, aside from that revolving fraction that is momentarily surrounded by the brake pads and caliper, is exposed to the air stream. And this inherent design benefit can be accentuated by casting fins into the center of the two-sided disc or by slotting the disc itself, effectively turning the disc into its own cooling fan. (This by the way, requires that the mechanic take care to install each disc on the proper side of the car. Passenger side and driver side slotted discs are different.) The next comparative disadvantage of drum brakes is that the effective surface of the brake, its swept area, is limited. Within limits, the drums can be made wider. Or they can be made larger in diameter. But those dimensions are limited by the inside diameter of the wheel in which the drum system is contained. Within the same wheel size it is possible to fit a disc brake system that has a far greater effective swept area. Disc brake systems, moreover, do not have to be mounted within the confines of the wheel. They can be mounted inboard and away from the wheel. The Jaguar E-Type did this with its rear brakes, putting the discs on the axle near the differential. Citroen has on many models, notably the DS and the indestructible 2CV, used inboard front disc brakes. Doing so has several advantages. 1) Larger discs can be fitted than could be accommodated within the inside diameter of the wheel. 2) The disc can be located where it gets a much greater amount of cooling airflow. And 3) The unsprung weight of the car, i.e. that not carried by the springs such as the wheel and tire, can be reduced by mounting the brake components inboard. Reducing unsprung weight improves both the ride and the handling of a car. Additionally, drum brakes can become temporarily inoperative immediately after having been soaked with water. Anyone old enough to have driven drum braked cars remembers the initial “no brakes” feeling when the brakes had to be used after driving through standing water. All skilled drivers would immediately lightly engage the brakes after going through water so as to heat them up and dry them out. In contrast, the pads on a disc brake system effectively squeegee the discs off with every application, thereby eliminating the problem. Yes, a car could be equipped with drum brakes on all for wheels. For a very long time drum brakes were the norm. Drum brake systems can be very durable. They are cheaper than disc brakes. And they are quite adequate for light vehicles, low speeds, and applications where brake fade will not be a problem. But disc brakes have so many inherent advantages in safety and stopping power that no manufacturer of a quality passenger car would ever consider reverting to drums.

What is the best car in the history of the Citroën brand?

The best car in the history of Citroen has to be the ,Citroen DS, launched in 1955. It had a 20 year production run and is said to be one of the most innovative and beautiful car in the automotive history. The wiki page for DS says ",In fact, the DS caused such a huge sensation that Citroën was apprehensive that future models would not be of the same bold standard. No clean sheet new models were introduced from 1955 to 1970.,"One look at the car reveals that it is not any other random car you see on the road. For a car released in 1955, it 1. had Hydro-pneumatic suspension. It was possible to increase and decrease the ride height of the car. It also made the car very comfortable to drive. 2. was the first production car to have disc brakes. The brakes were exceptionally powerful for a 50s car. 3. had an automated manual transmission, which had hydraulics to operate the clutch. 4. A futuristic, aerodynamic body which looked unearthly in the 50s. One thing worth mentioning is its interiors, specifically, the single spoke steering wheel. It is something I have never seen in any other car and I actually find it very beautiful. It was named the most beautiful car of all time by Classics & Sport Cars Magazine, and came third in the Car of the Century Competition.

How are French cars seen in the United States?

We don’t see many French cars at all here in the USA and those we do are viewed with a certain disdain. Most of us would prefer owning a Fiat than a Peugeot. Both cars are ,frequently, broken down but the Fiat is much easier and less expensive to fix. The little experience with French automobiles in the USA has been horrible to the extent that they get no more chances. The old Citroen DS series autos were so ugly that they’re beautiful. The engineering behind them is amazing. The level of comfort was every bit as good as any other premium automobile. 1970 Citroen DS 21. Image from Classic Cars For Sale UK, Citroen 2CVs are really cool looking. They almost look like a plaything from a child's toy box. That full length cloth sunroof would be amazing during a summer evening! 1958 Citroen 2CV. Do any modern cars have suspension as good as the Citroen DS hydropneumatic?

Citroen's suspension was amazing. I remember, as a young teenager, being driven from Nairobi to Mombasa in Kenya, mainly dirt road, in a ID 19 ! It loped along, wallowing over the humps and bumps! In the 1970′s, I owned a Morris 1100 (not a Mini) that had hydrolastic suspension which was as good as you can get! A very comfortable small car with excellent roadholding. Modern car suspension is very good, without pumps and pressure vessels which require maintenance. Roads are a lot better too, as are tyres.
