I have an 02 Jetta TDI it has nearly 400k on the odometer. I did mine at home, and while I was at it had to clean out the intake manifold that was clogged from 350k worth of deisel soot going thru the EGR system no diesel engine should ever be fitted with, cleaned the gunk from the same out of the intake ports plus changed the turbo that had a seized VNT system on it and a bad oil seal (at least a pint and a half of oil fell out of the intercooler when I opened up the intake.) Being that all this needed to be done at once and it is so high mileage, I started by pulling engine out. The labor alone would've cost more the than the thousand dollars I paid for the car. The parts ran me about 500 bucks and now it runs like a top and is averaging 45mpg and gets a good solid 8psi intake charge boost under moderate acceleration and tops out at 14.5psi under full load at a decent engine speed. TLDR: the labor involved, the parts usually needed (especially with most engines being interference engines) if the belt failed means you might as well either: A - do it yourself (I have loads of time, I suffered a major iatrogenic neurotoxic encephalopathy) or B - pay some clown that'll probably half ass rebuilding the heads and cylinders, fixing the smashed pistons and cleaning up the engine so it can go on to a short life of extremely high oil consumption before it goes kaput again or C - get a rebuilt engine or a used one with warranty, swap it yourself if you got the tools or pay the clown that'll probably rip you off anyway, keep your core and pay you nothing for it (the failed engine) and then rebuild it and sell it back out for a really generous profit (congrats you paid his rent/mortgage TWICE NOW!)
Grab yourself a relatively cheap 2003+ VW Jetta with the rock solid 1.8T engine. The sport model came with nice 17"s and a factory lowered suspension. More importantly, it comes with an oversized K04 turbocharger and can be chipped out very very cheaply to get boosted to 300hp. VW at the time was trying to move upmarket, so the car was very well appointed, heavily rustproofed, well painted and tend to age well. The main problem is a bit of body flex and front end bushings that die annually. A bit more money for better fuel management and an oversized intercooler would be well spent.
Two Dodges: 1991 Spirit R/T Turbo 2.5 L and 2002 Stratus R/T Turbo 2.4 L Sedan (only available in Mexico). Both are receiving larger newer Radiators and Intercoolers, as long mountain climbing roads tend to slowly creep up the engines temperature and getting overheated after a while. The 91 Spirit R/T came with an already good factory sport suspension and adequate brakes. The less old 2002 Stratus R/T came from factory with a lousy soft suspension, so I quicky replaced it with Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks: and then I found a fat antisway bar from a 1995 Cirrus V6, that is twice as stiff. Suspension bushings are not available in Polyurethane, so I got hard rubber reinforced ones that are those used in heavy armor protected cars. The Spirit R/T came from factory with a narrow Intercooler mounted to the side of the coolant radiator and lacked fans. Now it will have a larger Front Mounted Intercooler; a larger frontal area, thinner, more modern Radiator, and dual more modern fans replacing the original single fan. Once both cars can handle the heat, both will have increased boost. The ’02 Stratus R/T not only came with decidedly non-sport suspension from factory, but also with ridiculous brakes, thanks to the stupid and greedy germans from Daimler, that destroyed Chrysler during the Daimler-Chrysler “Joint-Venture” (it was more a bad Overtake where the damn germans displaced many good american engineers). They changed from the perfectly good Kelsey-Hayes brakes on the Spirit, to the puny (but german-made) ATE-Alfred Teves Continental brakes that are good for a VW Jetta (that uses exactly the same brakes, but weights at least 350 pounds LESS, and is MUCH slower than the Stratus R/T. So I purchased same size but slotted brake rotors (ATE PowerDisc “atom shaped grooves” rotors) and Posi Quiet ceramic pads from CENTRIC, and a larger diameter vacuum booster, since it is a single diaphragm design, when the older Spirit design had dual diaphragm booster. With somewhat wider that stock tires from BF Goodrich TA g-Force KDW, both cars handle quite agile and much better than factory stock. Total cost for these improvements is surprisingly low, and a great cost benefit ratio. Finally but very importantly, both cars have full five point harnesses replacing the standard seat belts in the front seats, and firmer foam inserts on the seat cushions. That improves the feeling or Feedback from the road, and while somewhat less comfortable than the factory seats, help me enormously in getting better handling of the cars on winding roads. Highly recommended. Please consider that in Mexico, car accesories AND high performance parts are not easily available nor inexpensive, so we have to resort to other mods than in the USA.
The Volkswagen turbocharged stratified injected (TSI) engine is a lightweight, high-power, fuel-efficient four-cylinder traditional combustion engine. It is found in some form on most Volkswagen vehicles, such as the Atlas, Tiguan, and Passat. A twin-charged performance version of the engine can be found in the Golf GTI and Jetta GLI. The engine’s claim to fame is its low-end torque and power, something that turbocharged four-cylinder engines have historically struggled with. By utilizing their extensive diesel engine knowledge to refine their traditional combustion engines, Volkswagen has been able to downsize engines without sacrificing much in the way of performance. This is mainly thanks to higher pressure injection, smaller displacement volume, and a sophisticated intercooling system. With its intricate engineering, the TSI family of engines is able to outperform bigger engines.
