I’ve watched my fair share of American teen dramas and the list goes on when it comes to fictional depictions of black people but specifically (and to keep this short and simple) the thing that irritates me the most is seeing plenty of dark skinned or brown skinned men but usually when there’s a dark skinned man there’s just a light skinned woman. There’s plenty of shows with dark skinned woman, or brown skinned woman but they’re never really portrayed in the same light as the light skinned women or in a light that I act relate to as someone that is not light skin. I’m mainly referring to what I’ve personally watched on Netflix and noticed and found very irritating. I only have a few examples right now but I could probably find lots of examples if I really looked. Anyways she’s light skin (I’m pretty sure she’s mixed in real life) and he’s brown skin/darker than her. Even her brother is darker than her in the movie. Another example of someone who is a POC that’s mixed or light skinned and her love interest is not that dark but he’s still black..? All 3 of the main girls in the show were “POC” but they all had one white parent which I didn’t really like. Another one of the other main characters in the show is mixed with black, and light skinned and I’m pretty sure the guy in the photo is… just black. Another example I’d say is On My Block. Monse is light skin and Jamal is darker than her. Then there’s Pope and Kiara from Outer Banks, she’s lighter than him, he’s darker than her. And a great example that first made me realize this was All American, pretty much all of the main girls (that aren’t from Crenshaw) are mixed. And all 3 of them either end up with or were with a darker love interest that is a guy or masculine. (I don’t know if there’s any new characters though because I stopped watching) I’d also say Euphoria is an example of this where the only black guy is well… a guy, and the “black girl” is mixed or light skin. I guess my point is I’m tired of feeling like actual black men are more accepted than actual black woman. As a brown skin girl I almost never find any TV shows or movies in my preferred genre that represent a brown skin girl or darker. This isn’t the case for every TV show with black people of course and maybe I need to watch more black media but that’s just something I’ve noticed that irks me as someone that isn’t as light as most of the girls I see on TV. :)
