Review Q&A lexus ls ls400

Lexus owners - after you got used to your Lexus, was it worth it? Would you buy another one? Why or why not?

I have had a Lexus LS400, then 430, then 460, from 1997. On the last one I bought , I REALLY wanted to change and get a Mercedes E550 or Audi A8 and test drove both many times. Wife did not like E550 since when we lived in Paris, the E series was the most common taxi we used to get and she felt she would be driving in a taxi + it was mostly all black interior and felt like a hearse. Audi A8 was very good and I really was tempted. Surprisingly, it did not feel so German. Did have that wavy cushy sitting in a “boat” feeling; which the Lexus LS 460 also has. Finally, what tipped the scale was we found the LS460 (used) that had all the bells and whistles and was $10K cheaper than the A8. On the three Lexi(is that a word??), I had following issues: -LS 400 : - Drivers seat back broke some rod and would not move any more. -LS430 : No issues at all -LS460: Seat memory is now a bit “ghostly”. It forgets my settings. Or when I go shopping and come back, it changes the settings to some wierd position I had not set. Finally, I worked closely with Toyota in Nagoya, Japan and their Product Development Processes with the basic idea of compressing the overall product development lifecycle(Which is called the PLM domain) and they told me that with the Lexus, they try not to compress too much. Let it take the time it takes to make it the way it is. I would buy it again and again.

Based on responses, Quorans believe that Honda and Toyota cars last the longest. So what model Honda, Acura, Toyota or Lexus offers the best price/longevity ratio?

There are several excellent choices such as Honda Civic and Accord and Toyota Corolla and Camry but if we are to choose the single model (line) it would be Lexus LS. It is well known in the industry they were over-engineered to a ridiculous extent at the launch. Think of that for a moment - imagine Toyota , already the undisputed champion of mass reliable transportation in the 1980s starting with a serious inferiority complex and responding by building an absurdly over-engineered car on the cheap. That was Lexus LS at the launch in 1989. Do not believe it? How about a million-mile Lexus LS400: First generation 1990–1992 LS400 are now quite old and with lots of miles but you can get them dirt cheap, and some of them with surprisingly few miles. The same applies for the second (1995–1997) and third generation (1998–2000) which have progressively stronger versions of the same quad-cam 32-valve V8 1UZ-FE engine which is widely considered one of the best ever built. Oh, did I say that it is the only engine that was certified for aircraft use? There is all kinds of crazy stuff Toyota did such as ,e.g., special “metal sandwich” noise isolation. Just go and drive any old LS and you will be able to see and hear for yourself. Those things are bulletproof and practically indestructible. Nowadays these cars go for slightly more than a decent used Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. But their reliability, comfort, durability and longevity are still unsurpassed.

Should I get my 19-year-old son what he wants, a Lexus, or just buy a him used Toyota or Honda?

Your son and I might be cut from the same bolt of cloth. I wanted a Lexus LS, I got a Honda Element which had stupid problems every year, and I upgraded to and LS430 last year. I would have been much better off if I just got an LS400 and lived with it. A Lexus is probably the most sensible luxury car. It's not uncommon for a used Lexus to be cheaper than a similar model Toyota - a very funny case of a market pricing things poorly. And Lexii have a quality that you can't get in most Toyotas. With the exception of the RX, all Lexii are made in Japan. And the Japanese built cars hold together better than the American made Toyotas. Which is an important difference when you're buying a 10+ year old car. Truthfully, you should only consider the LS or the ES. The GS is too sporty. The LS gets bad milage (20-25 mpg) but is one of the safest cars on the road. And you can find LSs in good condition for ~5,000. IF your son wants to learn how to repair cars, he can make it purr for less than $1000 in parts. The ES is like a Camry, but people tend to take better care of the ESs and you can find good deals if you look at pre-2000 cars. Avoid the ES300 with the 1MZ, it sludges bad. Ask you kid why he wants a Lexus. If he just wants a reliable car, go find a 1992-1996 Camry (best generation) that belonged to some geezer in Arizona (or other no rust state) and get that. Or if your son isn't going to drive a lot, you can't get much more reliable than a 4Runner. If he wants a comfortable car, consider the Toyota Avalon. But don't reject Lexus out of hand. They're really good cars, they can be good deals, and they can keep your family safe. Also, don't get a Lexus SUV. The RX isn't a very high quality car. And the LX and GX are way too big and expensive.

Should I buy a high mileage Lexus?

You should buy a Lexus, but not with high mileage unless you know a lot and can work on used cars. The savings you will get by buying high mileage cars will not be worth it. Having said that, there is no car on the planet that is more reliable than Lexus LS, especially LS400 and LS430.

How were Japanese automakers Toyota, Honda able to build their luxury brands Lexus, Acura into aspirational brands? Why are South Korean auto makers Kia and Hyundai struggling to do the same?

Because the conditions are very different. When Toyota created Lexus (by far the most successful of all three Japanese luxury brands), there were several different conditions, but mainly: the status of the luxury car market the reputation of Toyota When Toyota created Lexus, the US was just a few years past its low point of producing quality vehicles. Luxury buyers were given a choice: a lower quality US luxury car, or, most commonly, a German luxury car. 1991 Lincoln: not Detroit’s proudest days The problem with this choice is that the German luxury cars were made for German, or at least European, conditions and market tastes, and those didn’t correlate all that well with the desires of the US luxury market. German cars were considered to be generally well constructed, but often were underpowered, hard riding cars made to be “driver’s cars” after the European luxury car ethos. The US is a huge country with lots of highways, and a highway cruiser will always be a popular format (or so was thought at the time.) Furthermore, at that time, Mercedes had damaged its brand somewhat in the US with their introduction of new entry level cars, the 190: tiny by US standards, underpowered four-cylinder engines, ugly, and remarkably expensive for what it was (it was said that the engineers had ‘taken over’ Mercedes and were overbuilding the cars, which made them quite expensive). Mercedes 190: not well suited to the US market Mercedes-Benz W201 - Wikipedia Toyota correctly determined that the market was ripe for a well built car designed for the American luxury car buyer. The LS400, Lexus’ first offer, was not as big as many American luxury cars, but it was well built, very quiet, very comfortable on the highway, and had a potent 8 cylinder engine, all at a remarkably reasonable price. Soon the main factor in wealthy communities that inhibited Lexus sales is that everybody seemed to own one, and in that environment, exclusivity is a factor. 1990–1994 Lexus LS 400: the car that changed the luxury automotive industry Lexus LS - Wikipedia But there is also the factor of reputation. Toyota, although its brand position was that of an economical and practical vehicle in the 1980’s, had a pretty solid reputation for reliability already at that point. That is definitely not the case with Hyundai, which seems to have stuck in buyers minds as having horrible reliability and safety issues back in the 1980’s. Reputation is a very powerful marketing tool, and it’s not easy to rebound once it is lost. That is equally true for Chrysler, who will probably always have their cadre of haters who will never buy another Chrysler product. Excel from the 1980’s: an era of dodgy quality for Hyundai To compound that, Hyundai and Kia attempted to sell their luxury vehicles in the same showrooms as they sold their economy cars. Would you really be able to objectively assess that $60,000 Genesis when it is parked in the showroom next to a $17,000 Hyundai Elantra? Opening new showrooms is a huge expense, but unfortunately luxury buyers want the buying experience to be significantly better as well. Hyundai’s luxury marque, Genesis: now shown in separate showrooms With respect to Acura, it has largely been a failure, and may in fact be folded up by Honda. For that reason, I didn’t really consider Acura, or for that matter, Nissan’s Infiniti, which also has not done well. Lexus is the only success story, and the only one with an instructive story to tell.

What is the most dependable car in human history, and car manufacturer?

The most dependable car in history is Lexus LS400/LS430 manufactured from 1990 to 2006. They were launched in 1990 as an alternative to German luxury brands of Mercedes-Benz and BMW, in the first serious foray of Japanese manufacturers into luxury cars. 1990 Lexus LS400 2004 Lexus LS430 They were ridiculously over-engineered and seriously under-priced, with top-of-the-line Lexus LS400 with then-first quad-cam V8, double-wishbone fully independent suspension, supreme comfort, luxury, power and features undercutting Mercedes-Benz mid-range E-class by thousands, in a car besting top-of-the line S-Class. The shock to Mercedes-Benz was so great that they had to respond in 1992 by over-the-top W140 S-Class which are considered the largest S-Class ever. The quietness of Lexus LS400 was astounding, even today, based on pioneering techniques such as sandwich-steel panels and others. They used now legendary 1UZ-FE engines which are widely recognized as one of the best engines ever built. It is the only automotive engine that has been ,certified for aircraft use by the FAA,, with very strict reliability and durability requirements. Their engines are practically indestructible, running for hundreds of thousands of miles in total silence, with no appreciable difference from new. Just go out and check out virtually any used LS400/LS430 out there to see for yourself how it runs. Nowadays, as of 2017, they are widely available as used cars and somewhat of a bargain, as one can pick up a very nice used Lexus LS for price of an econobox. 2004–2006 LS430 with under 100Kmiles can be had for $12–14K, with 2000–2003 for even less. There are also low mileage 1990–2000 LS400 for $8K or less, which are total bargains. In summary, think of Lexus LS as the best Toyota knew how to build in the 1990s, ridiculously over-engineered because of a then-existing serious inferiority complex compared to Germans. That complex is long gone, but Lexus LS stand as the most reliable cars ever built.

Is Lexus better than Toyota?

When Lexus was first introduced to the world, Lexus was headquartered in California, with complete decision making power (to overrule any objections from Japan). From the design to the manufacturing process, it was largely catered towards building a premium vehicle that can go head to head against other premium brands with long line of lineage (BMW…Mercedes… Audi). In many ways, Lexus from the 90s are indeed better than Toyota, especially LS400 series. LS400, however, is not without issues. For example, the legendary Light Saber instrument panel fails after about 10 years, due to faulty capacitor, especially in colder climate. There are online tutorials on how to fixing that yourself without incurring large amount of money. It does seem that as time goes on, I do observe that Lexus dealership is getting more arrogant, not as humble as its initial beginning. As years goes on, Lexus reliability seems to get worse and worse compared to a plain Toyota. The engine-related trouble inside Lexus seems to be rather common as it ages. Things like Mass-Air-Flow sensor, Throttling position sensor, and pedal position sensor seem to fail in both of my past ownership of a 1994 Lexus LS400, and 2000 Lexus LS400. By the way, the Lexus dealership isn’t always that honest either. When we bought the 2000 Lexus LS400 certified pre-owned from the Lexus dealership in Ann Arbor, Michigan, they insisted on cleaning the car for us. It turned out they did more than that. They switched 4 brand new tires with 4 worn out tires…and they shined them up like new…before handing the car off to us. Obviously, it is an allegation, but we did check the tires during test drive and final phase, but failed to do another final check when we drove off… My 2004 Toyota on the other hand seems to still be chugging along just fine, even at much higher mileages than both of my Lexus. Later on due to cost cutting in 2000s, the decision power at Lexus California is diminished to the point of relinquishing it all back to its mother headquarter in Japan. Not trying to bash Lexus here, but the fact is.. Lexus really is sharing more and more parts with Toyota, and all the computer and high tech gimmicks are cool at first but really complicate the car’s overall reliability in the long run. By the way, comparing to the 90s, the later models of Lexus LS seems to get smaller and less premium feel. TL;DR: No, Lexus isn’t really better than Toyota now a day. Lexus was really better than Toyota in the 90s, however.

According to you, which car is the most engineered one in any given segment on every aspect (economical, safety, power, etc.)?

Ladies and Gentlemen! I present to you Lexus LS 400. Here is a brief history: Lexus LS 400 (1989) In 1983 the then Toyota chairman Eiji Toyoda started a project called the F1 "Flagship No. 1 vehicle” also known as the "Circle-F" project, it was to produce a world-class luxury sedan for the international market. The engineering team, headed by Shoiji Jimbo and Ichiro Suzuki, included 60 designers, 24 engineering teams, 1,400 engineers, 2,300 technicians, and 220 support people. They were already well into the design of a new, high-end luxury car when the first market research study in the United States was conducted for the project (in 1985). Jimbo himself attended focus groups and interviewed dealer, while a separate team of five people studied lifestyles and design concepts in Laguna Beach, California. Shortly afterwards, in July 1985, the first running prototype was built. An incredible 450 running prototypes were to be made, with Toyota apparently sparing no expense to beat Mercedes and other luxury automakers. By 1986, tests were being conducted on Germany's Autobahn and on American roads. Prototypes spent ten months being studied on American roads. In mid-1987, the final design was approved – after an unusually large number of presentations to management (eight). Roger Penske, who was to buy a Lexus dealership, traveled to Japan to test-drive one. The F1 project was not given a time scale for completion nor did it appear to have any budget constraints, as a result the vehicle was entirely new it did not use parts from the existing Toyota parts bin. The final cost of the development was more than 1 Billion US$ The car was designed to compete with and better all of the prestige models offered by the worlds existing manufacturers in all areas including aerodynamics performance and refinement. As part of the development process 450 vehicle prototypes and 900 engine prototypes were constructed and they logged approximately 2.7 million kilometers testing in all climates and environments from winter roadways, to deserts in Arizona, Australia, the USA and Saudi Arabia. In 1985 the first exterior models were presented to the Toyota management, featuring a low sports car type design, but by 1986 this had been changed to a classic three box design with a more upright stance, prominent grille, and two-tone paintwork Wind tunnel tests were under taken and refinements made to the design to produce a very low drag coefficient for production vehicles of the time Cd 0.29. In November 1988, the F1 was finally given a name – though it was not particularly distinctive: LS400. The LS stands for ,Luxury Sedan,, and 400 is the size of the engine. The LS400 debuted in the United States at the Detroit auto show in January, 1989. The car was an immediate hit, much to the chagrin of Mercedes, whose S-Class was more expensive, less luxurious, and, it would turn out, less reliable. Three years later, many said Lexus' LS had redefined its segment, but Toyota already had a revised model waiting in the wings, with over 50 changes based on dealer and customer requests. Only five years after the first model, in November 1994, a more extensive redesign took place. In September 1997, variable valve timing, (VVTi), was introduced in Lexus engines, increasing the performance; styling was updated, and new features were added, but the price remained the same. Lexus LS 430 (2000) In October 2000, eleven years after the first LS400 was sold, the new flagship Lexus – the ,LS 430,, with an enlarged engine – went on sale. New technologies included intuitive park assist, dynamic laser-guided cruise control (which could maintain a set distance as well as a set speed), heated and cooled front seats, and a rear-seat beverage cooler, and a Mark Levinson sound system. The LS430 would be revised in 2004, with a new six-speed automatic (2007 brought an eight-speed) and new luxury and safety features. Each LS 400 was test driven before leaving the factory, helping it to earn its consistent place at the, top of J.D. Power's quality awards,. The 2000 models included new safety features, including Brake Assist and Vehicle Skid Control, which help to enhance braking and regain control when the car starts to skid. The LS 400 could go to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, faster than many sporty cars - indeed, faster than Toyota's own MR2. Yet, gas mileage was 18 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway, thanks to variable valve timing and other technological advances. The LS 430 is powered by a 4.3-liter double overhead-cam V8 engine that produces 290 horsepower at 5,600 RPM and 320 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,400 RPM. Continuously Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) ensures excellent low- and mid-range power for easy highway merging. The Lexus ,LS 430, can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in 5.9 seconds, roughly the same time as the rougher Audi TT and ,Dodge SRT4,. The LS 430 was one of the first gasoline V8 vehicles to be certified as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV). The HID headlights in 2000 on-wards models, Lexus had them remain level regardless of road or load conditions. The automatic climate control included a charcoal filter to trap dust and pollen, and a smog sensor to automatically recirculate the air when pollution was heavy outside. An in-key remote entry system ended the need for an outside fob. In a long-overdue bow to customer tastes, Lexus let the driver select the headlight turnoff delay and other details. The LS series won more awards than any other luxury car, and, more to the point, won J.D. Power's vehicle dependability survey every year it was eligible. What popular product actually began as a copycat brand?

Lexus. One of the best selling luxury car brands today famous for their quality and world-class reliability. Go out for a drive, and they're everywhere now. Lexus was introduced to show international markets what the Japanese could offer in a luxury car. It aimed to surpass the likes of the European offerings, but was built to the dependable and high standards of Toyota and was offered at a lower price to own and operate. Their first car, the flagship LS400 sedan, was an instant hit. In order to appeal to the tastes of the European-accustomed affluent, Toyota's designers carefully sketched the sillhouettes of these cars, crafting a Japanese interpretation of the distinguished S-Class from Mercedes-Benz. It is quite obvious on early models how similar each rival's designs are. Lexus LS Mercedes-Benz S-Class And they did it again… And again… And again… And again. There are still many more models that share striking similarities, but those were some of the more obvious. Lexus has come a long, long way since then, and have radically departed from their conservative styling. "We have a challenge," Lexus’ chief designer Yasuo Kajino said. "Lexus is a young brand and our line-up is still very small compared to those of our rivals. We need to get noticed, and the way to do that is strong design." Thus the infamous spindle grille was born. At that point, Lexus had less and less of resemblance with Mercedes, and became largely differentiated its own unique identity with its own distinctive styling. The LC Convertible Concept, ,(2019) The original dream of a Japanese luxury car has been fulfilled, and has been dominating sales in the US in many segments. Not your typical automotive success story. What will happen next???

I am considering a 2008 Lexus LS sedan with 120,000 miles that has never been involved in an accident. What do you think of a high-mileage Lexus LS as a second car? How much trouble-free life do you think is left in a car like this?

120,000 miles isn't very high for a Lexus LS of any vintage. In my opinion, the 2007-2008 LS460s are on par with the 1990-1992 LS400's quality, which is the nadir of the Lexus LS' line of cars. The Ls460s have parking brake issues and suspension issues which were resolved in the 2009 refresh. Usually, the suspensions fail around 80k to 100k miles. If the car you're looking at has new suspension components, you could probably drive it for 10 years (at 8000mi/year) without an issue. I think an LS460 would be trouble-free but it might be worth checking out a 2005/2006 LS430. You can get a fully loaded LS430 in excellent condition with less than 100,000 miles for about half the price of a LS460, and the LS430 is probably one of the most trouble free cars of all time. The LS430 is also a bit quieter and many people thinks they ride a little better than the LS460s, but the LS460s are much faster, get a bit better milage, and are much more sporty. You can't go wrong with a Lexus LS! It'd make a great second car, or a daily driver or a limousine!
