How can we prepare a stock engine for turbocharging?

The easiest option is to pick an engine that is over built from the factory and has a good reputation as a strong engine when boosted with no modifications. 1. Ford YB Cosworth, Still breaking records and winning events nearly 25 years after its debut, the 2ltr Cosworth engine is highly tuneable. Potentially capable of 250bhp-per-litre with standard internals and standard size turbo, which is unheard of with other engines. 2. The M3 is right behind it, as they are famous for being durable cars, especially for European performance cars. The NSX is a bit behind them. The NSX is known for being expensive and anemic compared to most American and European competitors. It doesn't live up to its Honda heritage. Corvettes have the GM LS V8. It is an ubiquitous engine that is used in every power-centric application for the company. They are reliable, powerful, and easily worked on. Overall build quality of the Corvette is usually better than the other cars from Chevy. Quality control is much better. The Corvette and M3 are probably the best values in performance in the world. They may not have the flash of an Italian marque, but they will keep up with the majority of them on the track. They are still much better on your wallet.

Are BMWs really that less reliable than Hondas?

Growing up, my family had a lot of Hondas. When I was a kid (late 80’s) they were about the most reliable thing you could get cheap, and once they could afford them, my parents started buying them new. From the time I started driving until well after I was married (16–26), I had 8 or so Hondas myself (‘94 Civic Si, ’94 Prelude Si, ’86 Civic Si, ’87 Accord, a couple of ’94 Integra LS (one lost to a collision), ’91 CRX Si, ’03 CR-V, that I can recall off-hand). Some of them were nice, but most were bought really cheap with 180–220k miles on them and driven until I felt like getting rid of them. At one point, about 6 years ago, I was looking for an inexpensive “cash” car that would be fun to drive, but with 4 doors. I specifically wanted a manual transmission. Around this time I realized that I could get a 4-door civic around 8–10 years old with a manual transmission for around $7–8k with 100–150k miles on it (and cloth interior, not much in the way of features), or for much less, an E46 (‘99-’05 BMW 3-series) between $4–6k with leather interior, heated seats and side mirrors, moon roof, premium sound system, etc. I spoke to a mechanic friend of mine regarding BMW reliability (which engines to stay away from) and settled on an ’01 BMW 330 sedan with a manual transmission. Under 100k miles, just under $6k, and it was in very nice condition, aside from needing fresh tires (it had sat for several years at this point). It cleans up to look very nice. That said, since I’ve had it, I’ve had lots of issues that were much easier to deal with on Hondas, but are common with older cars, such as bad sensors, vacuum leaks in deteriorating hoses, etc. As a shade tree mechanic, nothing I couldn’t deal with easily, but more of a pain to work on just due to how everything is put together. Now, my mechanic friend had an E36 (previous gen. 3-series) that he built to race (and raced multiple times at Pike’s Peak), and his shop specialized in euro and exotic cars, so I trusted his opinion. He told me specifically to stay away from any non-M BMW v8 (think 540s, 740s) and stick to the older inline 6’s. While the 6-cylinder engines still have some known issues, the v8s have inherent design flaws that would not only be expensive to repair (timing chain issues), but could not really be “fixed”. Yes, you could repair them over-and-over, but you’d quickly reach a point where it’s just a lost cause. Come to find out over the past few years, even the M-series V10s have severe design issues that required replacement of crank bearings (major engine tear-down), not to mention that since the early ‘00’s they’ve been packing the cars with more and more electronics and technology that ended up having their own issues that become difficult to diagnose and correct. Couple inherent design flaws with German engineering that requires a much higher level of maintenance just to maintain normal operation, and the fact that even the “reliable” engines are in cars that are now 20 years old and at the bottom of the depreciation cycle, unless you’re paying a premium for a car that was loved and meticulously maintained by an enthusiast, you’re likely getting a car that’s been neglected for 10 years or more. With newer BMWs, I wouldn’t consider owning one outside of the factory warranty. With Japanese cars, this usually isn’t as much of an issue, as they’re designed to run much longer without much maintenance, albeit at the sacrifice of some level of performance. SO, all that to say, while I love my 2001 BMW and plan to keep it on the road for another 10 years/100k miles, if you’re looking for reliability and low maintenance cost, I’d recommend almost any Honda over a BMW to all but the most mechanically-capable enthusiast.

What do you suggest to get the most horse power out of a 325i BMW 03?

How much do you want to spend? Your 2003 E46 three series car will have a 2.5 litre M54 engine. They’re nice, revvy units when working properly. By now, it’s old. Even if serviced properly, the years will have had taken their toll, mainly to the cooling system. The VANOS system (twin) will probably need a rebuild. (The seals etc., have a tendency to harden & loose effectiveness with time). The PCV system will be a mess, all those plastic & rubber components will be past their best. (A faulty PCV system can give rise to all kinds of bizarre check engine warnings). Cheaper end of the scale? I would first suggest getting you engine to run as designed. Be wary of anything that requires needs the head to come off, as the headbolts will be effectively welded into the (alloy) block. Putting it all back together ,without, ,timserts or similar to restore the block’s threads will wreck the engine. So be prepared for that expense if the head does need to come off. Carry-out the servicing/repairs I suggested above. With a bit more money, turbos or belt-driven superchargers can be very effective. Fitting a larger 3.0 M54 engine from a 530i E39 or 330i E46 could be worthwhile. (It is otherwise identical to your engine & whilst it will run on the 2.5 litre engine’s map, a remap would be worthwhile). A remap can release a little more power, but on an otherwise stock engine, it won’t be much more than about a 10% increase in power. Adding a turbo/blower and/or nitrous to a 2.5 (or 3.0) could get interesting. If you have more money, people have successfully fitted BMW M3 sixes, M5 V8s (E39) or even V10 (E60) engines. GM LS smallblocks have also been fitted, sometimes with blowers. It all depends on the available funds. It’s also worth remembering that restoring/upgrading the running gear (brakes, suspension etc.) can make the car more enjoyable to drive. If you increase the power output substantially, you’ll be doing that anyway, won’t you…? ;-]

What's your least favorite luxury car brand of Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti?

Of the brands you listed, I would have to say that my least favorite brand is Acura. I consider myself a “driver” and the way a vehicle feels and handles is very important. I’ve had to opportunity to drive different cars so I have a pretty good idea of how different cars drive. My father has had a few generations of Mercedes S Classes, and my mom has had a few generations of Lexus LS. I’ve also test driven friends’ and family members’ cars. I have owned the previous 2 generations of BMW M3 (E46 and E90). My wife has the current X5 and one of the earlier versions. I have driven all of the other cars you listed as well. For me, the Acura does not really drive differently from a Honda. I actually feel they handle worse. I’ve driven 2 different generations of TLs and 2 different generations of MDXs. The early TLs had horrible weight distribution and I almost wrecked it during a test drive. They front is very heavy, making turn in slow and causing under-steer. I drove the Type S version so it had 260 HP. Since it was front wheel drive, this caused a lot of torque steer (front wheels responsible for driving and steering the car makes the steering wheel pull when under power). The next generation TL placed a greater emphasis on weight distribution and drove better than the previous generation. It wasn’t anything special though. The MDX I drove has the SHAWD (super handling all wheel drive) system. It is basically an electronic torque vectoring system that is supposed to direct the torque to the wheels that have traction and prevent wheels from slipping. The problem is that it totally messes with the steering feel and makes the steering wheel jerky. Acura has always provided a decent value for a “up-market” car and includes a lot of things that other brands nickel and dime you for. They are basically upgraded Hondas so they tend to be pretty reliable. They started off being sporty, but they failed at that and they don’t really reach the level of luxury the other brands do. Lexus provides good luxury and great dependability. Their earlier cars had very soft suspensions and over-boosted power steering. They have focused a lot more on the handling and they are placing a greater emphasis on sport. Mercedes has a strong focus on luxury and makes decent handling cars. They have really upped their game in terms of handling, especially with their AMG models. They make some of the most attractive cars on the road (S Coupe and GT) and some of the quickest. reliability is not on par with the Japanese cars and repairs are often very expensive. BMW has always focused on sportiness and claims to be the “Ultimate Driving Machine”. They are great handling cars with a strong focus on handling. Their interiors are pretty boring though and they really messed up the steering feel by going to electronic power steering. My wife’s new X5 feels twitchy on the highway where as her old (2005) X5, which had hydraulic power steering, handled great. Reliability isn’t great though and repairs can be very expensive, especially on the M cars. Audi has come a very long way and has incredibly interiors. their exteriors are nice, but a little on the boring side. They have more of a balance of performance and luxury. They used to have a strong emphasis on all wheel drive with their Quattro system, but Mercedes and BMW jumped on that band wagon for better acceleration times. Infiniti is probably the sportiest of the Japanese Luxury brands. They make great looking vehicles and most are rear wheel drive. I think they totally messed up with their naming scheme though and have totally confused the heck out of everyone by naming every model Q something.

Is there any kind of rule of thumb for adding horsepower/boost where you can add an amount and it will almost definitely still be safe for the engine/reliable (10%, 20%, 30%, etc.)?

0 is safe because that’s what the engine was designed for the less you boost the engine power the more reliable it will be. If you still decide to modify the engine find a model that is available in higher performance versions with the same internals basically an engine that is over built and has a good reputation for lasting with more power. 1.
