Was there anything fundamentally wrong with the Honda CBX that limited production to four years?

My friend had a CBX 6 cylinder and there was no demand for the power of that bike on city streets plus it was very topheavy to say the least. The cost of that bike and a 750 was not justified for the speed difference and the CBX was a poor handling bike at low speeds in like the 750. Simply not a good production bike and parts was a nightmare for that model

What are some classic motorcycles that defined the 70s?

Great Question! The 1970’s decade was the birth place of the super bike craze . Honda opened the gate with the iconic Honda CB750 four and sold boat loads world wide . In 1970 if you had one you owned the world ! But every manufacturer had to step up or be left in the dust . Along came the Kawasaki 900 Z-1 . If you owned this bad boy , everyone just stayed out of your way or they experienced defeat . Not all manufactures had the money , design or performance to give the Z1 any competition, but some had an advertising department that stayed awake nights and the Norton Commando 750 and 850 got a lot of attention . By the end of the decade Honda decided to pull out all the stops and build a bike that would not only out run all the others but sound like a super sonic jet and be so mechanically complicated that every other factory design team , could do nothing but look and stand speechless . The 1979 Honda CBX six cylinder . One ride made you a fan for life . There were many great bikes built in the 70’s decade of all out performance wars .But one stood out in ways few other companies could understand . The Ducati 750 ss Green Frame , had true beauty of function , a feeling of torque and speed , and no other bike could out run it thru a mountain pass or the endless curving road . It had sex appeal and gave you an adrenaline rush just looking at it . Due to it’s cost and small dealer network few people could afford one or find one . They were not sold in great numbers . But of all the bikes built in that decade , this one is a very highly sought after machine by savvy , addicted collectors . With a total production of 401 machines , they are currently selling at Auction above $200,000. And climbing fast . There can be no limit to value for such beauty ! If you owned one of these or even rode one , you were a man standing heads above the crowd !

What does CB stand for in the Honda CB Hornet?

For decades Honda has given model names to it's line that defies reasonable explanation. I believe the first Honda two-wheeler was called the Model A. But CA, CD. CB. CL have all appeared on Street/street and pseudo trail bikes, all around the same time.. CB follows a general road worthy machine, around the introduction of the 250 hawk( CB-72) and the 305 Super Hawk (CB-77) . A very similar machine, but touted to be a scrambler carried the CL designation. A CB was available at one time or another in 1, 72,77, 100,125, 160,175,200, A bike that was around about the same time as the 72 and 77 CB models, was a pressed steel frame CA and CA 77. Now fast forward a few years when the Hawk and Super Hawk were on the showroom floor at the same time as the pressed steel Frame 90cc bike was being sold. Although one might think to continue the concept a bike of this type would naturally beg to be called a CB 90, but no, the clever lads at Honda decided on S 90. Ostensibly for Sport. About this time Honda brought out their biggest bike yet...Enter the CB450, roughly 450cc and CB was a natural. The CB 160 that followed the 250 and 305 hawk models. A cute scaled down Super Hawk; many called it a baby Super Hawk.. And then an onslaught of CB models. 350, 175, 200, 360, 750, 500, 550, but then the six cylinder jewel the CBX. then all hell broke loose with too many models to recall. Some CX, FV, and other that did not fit the CB mold. This post from the editor at MotoUSA may help....... A little while back we received an email from a reader asking what the CB in Honda’s famous CB line of motorcycles stands for. We’ve heard numerous explanations for the CB moniker over the years, including “city bike,” “cross beam,” “citizen’s bike” even “chokusetsu baiku” (personal motorcycle), but none have ever been definitively confirmed by the Japanese manufacturer. So we decided to do some investigating to see if we could come up with a conclusive answer. ................. Our first contact was with Jon Seidel, a longtime American Honda press manager. Seidel was under the impression that there was no significant meaning behind the letters, but he passed the question along to Gary Christopher, a senior manager inside American Honda. Christopher then proceeded to reach out to several individuals inside the company to see if anything could be discovered regarding the CB classification. Here’s what he found. Like Seidel, Christopher had been told by a number of Japanese staff over the years that CB was no more than a model designation, with no particular significance attached to it. He contacted Bob Young, a longtime National Service Manager at American Honda, who was also heavily involved with the development and testing of the CB750, and “Mike” Hishiki, a longtime test rider and development team member of Honda R&D for their take. Young and Hishiki also had never heard any specific words attributed to CB, thinking it was just the next logical step from the C-series (C100 Super Cub for example), to the CA-series (like the CA71) to the CB. The two could not remember any time when Mr. O. Saito, a project lead engineer on the CB750, referenced any meaning, such as “city bike,” to the CB, nor was there any confirmation that Mr. Honda ever uttered “chokusetsu baiku” in reference to the letters. Christopher’s conclusion is that, though later models may have been assigned specific meanings in accord with the model designations, the CB was just the next step in a series of model identifiers of the time. It’s not an earth-shatteringly sexy revelation, but that’s probably as solid an answer as we’re ever going to get.

Why do German cars have electronic speed limiters?

The reason is fairly similar to the question why there used to be a voluntary 100-hp limit for motorcycles in Germany (BMW didn’t make anything with more than 70 hp at the time). In the 70s, motorcycle engines became increasingly powerful, in fact too powerful for the frames they were installed in. Kawasaki’s Z900 had a reputation for being a handful to drive, so did their 500 H1 and 750 H2 two-stroke triples. Then came the first Honda GL 1000 Gold Wing, which was intended to be a touring motorcycle, but with 82 hp was marketed as something sporty. Due to the weight and the rather unsporty suspension, the GL 1000 was plagued by weaving, even reinforced by handlebar-attached aftermarket fairings. A number of accidents followed, after which the legislative started making noises about putting a stop to this development. Honda had the 105-hp six-cylinder CBX ready, Kawasaki countered with the 120-hp, six-cylinder Z1300, Yamaha had stopped themselves at 95 hp for the XS 1100. The importers got together and decided to limit the engines to 100 hp to keep the government from doing something likely to be stupid, which remained until 1999. When national road homologation was replaced by an EU-wide one, the voluntary 100-hp limit in Germany disappeared. It was not illegal to own, say, an unrestricted Yamaha V-max with 145 hp, self-import or buying a “grey” import was always possible, but road registration was made difficult, and the whole thing not encouraged. After this lengthy introduction, back to the topic at hand. A bit over 30 years ago the top speed region above 240 km/h, until then the domain of high-end sports cars from Ferrari, Lamborghini or Porsche, came in reach of somewhat normal cars. BMW’s first E28-based M5 was, if I remember right, the first German four-door saloon with a topspeed above 250 km/h (251, but above is above), not using aftermarket performance enhancements. In 1986 the E32 7-series entered the market, with the 735i reaching a topspeed of 235 km/h, and one year later followed the 300-hp 750i, featuring Germany’s first post-war V12 engine, and the first production saloon limited to 250 km/h. This more or less set off a performance race, yet the manufacturers sat together like the motorcycle importers 10 years earlier and decided to keep their production cars limited to 250 km/h before politicians interfered with stupid ideas. As we all know, the M5 and 750i pretty much started a performance race, with Mercedes going after the M5’s straight-six 286 hp (E28) or 315 hp (E34) engine by stuffing the four-valve, five-litre V8 into the 500 E (later E 500), and installing a six-litre, 408-hp V12 in the W140 600 SE/SEL. Today the top-end saloons of BMW 5 and 7 series, Audi A6 and A8, Mercedes E- and S-class all have above 500 hp, but the 250-km/h-limit remains. As for the government doing stupid things, that is a very real threat. Around 25 years ago some newspapers wrote articles about a certain feature in electronic engine management systems, wide-open-throttle enrichment. This reduced the effectiveness of catalytic converters from around 98% to 50%. What with politicians not being the most knowledgeable people, they started making demands into open microphones about (I remember this one so well because it made me laugh a lot while being scarily idiotic) “removing the catalytic converter switches”. As a result, manufactures disabled the feature, again to prevent harebrained regulations. This is why the Mercedes V12 dropped from 408 to 394 hp, and the 5-litre V8 from 326 to 320 hp.

Why are old Hondas so expensive?

Some vintage and classic motorcycles will bring a premium price for several reasons. The vintage bike is just an older bike to speak of. Many of the people who buy these are older people who had one whenever younger and remember the good times and how dependable they were and want another one. Some Hondas like the original single cam CB 750 K models, CB 400 4 cylinders, the CBX, and some others are in the highly collectible class. These bikes were milestone bikes. The CB750 gave riders a 4 cylinder very fast bike for the time, it changed motorcycling. The CBX is rare and exotic. The CB400f was an early true super sport with a six speed and impressive performance. That being said, there are many older Hondas that are reasonable in price and very dependable. The shadow series, the later 400 twins, The rebel, and others come to mind. Just remember, just because it’s old does not make it a classic or a desirable collectible. Some Owners seem to think an old bike is something that should fetch Mecham’s auctions level of prices.

If you could have any motorcycle which would it be?

I’m the wrong person to ask this question of . When I was about 14 I began riding , very shortly after that , I met a fellow who knew a great deal about motorcycles , he bought and repaired quite a few old bikes , and had new ones as well , this was about 1962 . He took me under his wing and taught me how to ride and exposed me to the existence of the great old motorcycles of the past as well as the exciting machines of that time . He had the presence of mind to suggest I make a list of the ten greatest motorcycles of all time . I did , then he checked my list , gave me magazines and books and tore the list up . Saying No, No! Then after study he had me make a second list , this time we discussed the pros and cons of those bikes and he crossed a few off my list , as not worthy and had me begin again . This process went on for some time until , I had a list of ten he thought were the best .At that point I had learned a lot from second hand experiences, books and his experience . So I expanded on it and made a list of 15 . Then he convinced me that I should try to obtain the bikes on my list , if ever one crossed my path and I had that opportunity. He also started me on my path to racing and working as a mechanic. I learned more , had more exposure to real machines , many new and many old . I started buying junkers , fixing them and selling them . Always with a goal of getting some great bike for myself to ride . It has taken a life time , with many obstacles in the way , but I have owned just about everyone of those 15 bikes and hundreds of others that are considered desirable . So , if you think a Crocker is the best , I have had one , a Brough Superior SS 100 , that also , a Norton Manx , a BSA gold star , Vincent black Shadow, Vincent Series A twin , Indian 4 , Henderson 4 , 1909 Pierce 4 , well the list is endless . My wife knows the list just keeps growing . What bike is there I want that I haven’t had ? An Aeramachi , 250 Chimera , a Ducati SS 750 round case , maybe a pristine 1915 Iver Johnson . The only one on my original list of 15 would be a Megola . Very hard to find one for sale. The ones I would buy over and over are Indian 101 scout , Vincent’s , Henderson Super X , Indian four’s and Honda , CB 750 or CBX . Oh and the next bad ass , faster than hell road rocket to be made . Cheap thrills are what it’s all about .
