Review Q&A fuel injector ohms

How much horse power would a 14.4 ohm fuel injector give a 305 motor?

The number of ohms of a fuel injector’s coil is not an indication of the amount of fuel it can flow. You are comparing apples and oranges.

What is the recommended resistance in ohms of the fuel injectors of a Nissan Sentra B14 GA14?

I don’t know the answer to your question but I don’t need to know to check your injector’s resistance. Just check the resistance of all of them and they all should have close to the same resistance. An injector which has a resistance way different to the others would be suspect.

Would a car suffer from a poor operation if you swap a fuel injector rated at 214cc/15.7 ohms to one with 204cc/14.2ohms?

Even though 10 cc of fuel does not seem like a lot; Yes, the reduction would cause poor operation. Most EFI systems are calibrated for a specific injector and all fuel curves need that volume of flow set by that injector. Injectors open 100% in use so unless the system can compensate for the reduced fuel feed, using O2 sensors by extending the open time, it will affect performance.

What is a fuel injector?

The electronic control unit (ECU at engine management system) determines the precise amount and specific timing of required gasoline (petrol) dose for every cycle, by collecting information from various engine sensors. So, the ECU sends a command electrical signal of the correct duration and timing to the fuel injector coil. In that way opens the injector and allows petrol to pass through it into the engine. The one terminal of the injector coil is directly supplied by 12 volts which is controlled by the ECU, and the other terminal of the injector coil is open. When ECU determined the exact amount of fuel and when to inject it, activates the appropriate injector by switching the other terminal to the ground (mass, i.e. negative pole). The figure 1 under A, shows a typical build of a fuel injector for single-point injection system (SPI), and under B, shows a typical build of a fuel injector for multi-point injection system (MPI). Figure 1) Fuel Injector types:, ,A) Fuel injector for single-point injection system (SPI), 1.Fine petrol filter, 2.Electrical coil, 3.Returning spring, 4.Electrical connector, 5.Fuel outlet, 6.Armature, 7.Ball valve B) Fuel injector for multi-point injection system (MPI), 1.Returning spring, 2.Fine petrol filter, 3.Electrical connector, 4.Electrical coil, 5.Armature, 6.Needle valve In ,single-point injection system, is used only one common injector which is located before the throttle and injects the fuel for all cylinders. These types of injectors are usually with relatively ,lower impedance,. In ,multi-point injection system, is used one injector for each cylinder. The injectors are located after the throttle, and are positioned so that they point at the back of the inlet valves. These types of injectors are usually with relatively ,higher impedance,. Fuel Injector Impedance According to the used injection system type, usually there are two general impedance (electrical resistance) ranges for the injector coils: • High impedance injectors are generally used in multi-point systems and they are with an impedance in the range of 12 to 18 ohms (15 ohms ±3 ohms). • Low impedance injectors are generally used in single-point systems and they are with an impedance in the range of 0.5 to 2.5 ohms (1.5 ohms ±1 ohm). Fuel Injector Voltage and Current Signals The following diagram shows a voltage and current waveform of the signal which is common to most high impedance injectors. Diagram 1) ,The voltage and current waveform at high impedance injectors Voltage signal:, At point A, the injector is off. At point B, the ECU turns the injector on, by bringing the ground (mass) to the injector coil, so at point C the voltage drops to zero. At point D, the ECU turns the injector off. At this point there is an amount of stored energy in the injector coil, so a large back electro-motive force is generated which causes a large voltage spike at point E. This voltage is fast dissipated by the impedance of the injector coil and quickly returns to 12 volts at point F. Current signal:, At point A, the injector is off. At point B, the ECU turns the injector on, so at point C the current increases through the coil. When the magnetic field becomes strong enough to overcome the internal spring and fuel pressure, the needle lifts which produces a small dip in the current near at point D. The ECU turns the injector off at point E, so the current returns to zero at point F. The following diagram shows a voltage and current waveform of the signal which is common to most low impedance injectors. Diagram 2) ,The voltage and current waveform at low impedance injectors Voltage signal:, At point A, the injector is off. At point B, the ECU turns the injector on, by bringing the ground (mass) to the injector coil, so at point C the voltage drops to zero. When the ECU determined that the current flow is high enough to lift the needle, turns the injector off at point D. The stored energy in the injector coil causes the large voltage spike at point E, then the ECU pulses the injector on and off, faster than the injector can react, so the needle floats in an open position during F. When enough amount of fuel has been delivered, the injector is turned off. This produces a large voltage spike which immediate falls to 12 volts at point G. Current signal:, At point A, the injector is off. At point B, the ECU turns the injector on, so at point C the current increases through the coil. When the magnetic field becomes strong enough to overcome the internal spring and fuel pressure, the needle lifts which produces a small dip in the current at point D. To prevent overheating, the ECU starts to pulse the injector at point E. The pulses continue during F, and after the final pulse, the current returns to zero at point G.

My car is running like the coil packs need replacing but it is showing a knock sensor code. Should I replace the coil pack first and see if it fixes the problem?

I would check the condition of the spark plugs & see how well that they are sparking before just replacing parts for the sake of it,I would also perform a compression test to see if any of the cylinders are low on compression. If it's 1 dead cylinder then pull each lead or coil off each lead to determine which cylinder is dead if it's only misfiring on 1 cylinder,if they are individual coils then you can swap them around to find out if it's caused by a faulty ignition coil. If it doesn't make a difference then check the engines compression,if it's o.k. then check the fuel injector pulse with a noid light to rule out bad wiring in the fuel injector wiring loom or an open circuit fuel injector driver (transistor) in the ECU. If it's o.k. then check the fuel injector coil resistance with a multimeter on the ohms scale to the vehicles specifications,if it has gone open circuit then replace the fuel injector,if the ECU looms resistance is good for that cylinder & there's no fuel injector pulse then the ECU needs replacing. If everything including the engines compression, fuel injector pulse, spark & fuel injector continuity tests good then the fuel injectors need cleaning or the non firing fuel injector needs replacing If the engine is running rough & surging then it likely has an air leak after the mass airflow sensor or the MAP sensor !

At what mileage should fuel injectors be replaced?

Whenever they leak, etc, the older style Nissan RB30E or 280ZX Low impedance 4 ohm fuel injectors pintles tended to wear out by 300,000 kilometres (180,000 miles) which caused them to leak Residual fuel into the engine overnight & cause driveability problems such as flat spotting & hesitation in my experience. The newer high impedance 14 ohm fuel injectors which seal the injector nozzles up with a metal disc tend to have less problems than the older Bosch or Hitachi fuel injectors which were used in the 1970’s-1980’s !

How do you tell if a car is using the right injectors?

They will have a part number written on the side if they're Bosch or Hitachi top feed fuel injectors, the 2 things which need to be taken into account by besides the length, connector type, etc are :- Coil impedance,is it low or high (e.g. 4 or 14 ohms)? Injector flow in CC's per minute or lbs per hour You can measure the injector coils resistance using a multimeter & get the injectors flow tested if you're not sure,my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine can probably use the later style LS2 injectors if the connectors are changed over on the wiring loom or use EV1 to EV6 connector adapters & to use standoffs on the ends of the fuel injectors to add length to them because they're shorter than the EV1 connector type LS1 fuel injectors. That's only necessary if you plan on doing some serious modifications to the car where the engine will need to be dyno tuned, the stock 12561462 fuel injectors are enough because they flow a total of 136.64 litres per hour for all 8 fuel injectors & my engine puts out about 406 horsepower so it needs the injectors to flow 123.83 litres per hour !

How do I solve a cylinder 3 misfire?

Assuming the engine is in good mechanical condition, it's either going to be a fuel problem or ignition problem. To eliminate the ignition as the problem, swap the coils from cylinder 3 and cylinder 4 and see if the misfire moves to cyl. 4. If so, replace the coil. if it doesn't move, you'll have to test your fuel injector in cyl. 3 for resistance by unplugging it and using a digital volt/ohm meter. I suppose you could also have a wiring issue in the harness or the ecu could be faulty on the ignition side for that cylinder. Those are rare though, I'd bet on the coil.

How can I test my fuel injectors at home?

How to Test Fuel Injectors TBI Injectors are being tested When learning how to test gasoline injectors, you must first master the first approach, which involves visually inspecting the fuel spray with TBI injectors. The fuel flow spray is easily accessible, making it quick and easy to inspect the fuel system and injectors for any potential problems. There are three primary stages you must follow while inspecting the gasoline spray. The first step is to remove the air cleaner housing's cover. If the engine does not turn over, ask your helper to start or crank it. Finally, look at the spray pattern to see if the fuel injector is malfunctioning. You've determined that the fuel injector is working properly if the fuel comes out in an inverted V pattern. When learning how to test gasoline injectors, an irregular pattern indicates that an internal item has worn down or been damaged. Furthermore, if you do not see fuel coming out of the fuel injector, you have a problem that needs to be addressed. A blocked injector, broken injector parts, a defective fuel pressure regulator, a clogged fuel filter, or a damaged fuel pump are all possible causes for a damaged fuel injector. EFI Injectors are being tested The second method for learning how to test fuel injectors is to test EFI injectors by determining which injectors are working in your system and whether the problem is with the fuel injector or with the fuel system's controlling circuit. The EFI injection system, unlike the other injectors on the TBI systems in method 1, does not have the fuel spraying available for easy examination that can be done in minutes. With the appropriate and proper equipment, you must inspect each injector's spraying pattern for this system. When learning how to test fuel injectors, you must listen to each injector to see if it is operating or not in order to determine the fuel spray. To begin, use a mechanic's stethoscope or take your automobile to a nearby auto body shop to listen to the fuel injector. Allow the vehicle to idle before applying the parking brake and opening the hood. Next, listen for a clicking sound with the stethoscope on the injector's side. The sound emanates from an inner solenoid that activates and deactivates the injector valve. If you don't hear the clicking sound, you'll need to figure out how to test the fuel injector to determine if it's functioning properly. Fuel Injector Coil Inspection When deciding if your fuel injector is dead, the third approach to learn how to test fuel injectors is to inspect the fuel injector coil. Using a multimeter, a diagnostic tool, to examine the coil's resistance value is one of the checks you can perform. You can check your car's service manual for the required resistance value. You can do this by shutting off the engine first. Unplug the electrical connector from the fuel injector, then set your digital multimeter to the correct value for your vehicle. To examine and analyze the resistance reading, probe the injector terminals. Learning how to test fuel injectors with an ohm meter or a diagnostic tool is a fantastic way to get started. How is the duration of electronic timing of the brief pulse in a modern fuel injection car engine controlled?

Simple digital on-off control. There are special IC chips made to control the fuel injectors. Most/all use low-side switching, meaning 2 wires go to the injector, one a constant 12 VDC (when ignition is ON) and the other is a return which is switched to ground. That is easier in transistors and how most switched devices work from the earliest transistor ones of the 1970’s (electronic spark, voltage regulator, …). Specifically to your question of “interval”, that is usually timed in the engine controller’s main microprocessor by counting clock cycles in software. The phasing is done based on trigger pulses from crankshaft and camshaft sensors. Read-up on the Megasquirt website for details. There are 2 main types of fuel injector. After-market racing type are usually “low-impedance” (~1 ohm coil), which respond faster but need a special driver. I think they are working their way into factory sports cars. Most are “normal-impedance” (~12 ohm coil). If one changes to low-impedance ones, you must install a driver box which intercepts the normal drive wires and uses them as a signal to trip the driver box.
