No. 20 years back is 1993 and we already had quite a few brands come and go. Here is a list. Hindustan Motors, 1. Ambassador Mark IV and then 1800 ISZ (originally Morris Oxford). This car is the Kolkata cab. Original Morris: 2. Contessa Classic 1.8 GL (a saloon car, a so-called luxury brand of those times. Originally Vauxhall Victor) Original Vauxhall: ,Premier Automobiles Ltd, 1. Padmini (waning popularity by 1993. Originally Fiat 1100). This is the Mumbai cab. Original Fiat 1100: 2. 118 NE (pretty popular during those times. Originally Fiat 124) Original Fiat 124: Maruti, 1. 800 (the original Suzuki Alto): Already the most popular car in 1993. Original Suzuki Alto: 2. 1000 (later the Esteem, originally Suzuki Cultus / Swift): A stylish sedan popular with the upper middle class. 3. Omni (originally Suzuki Carry). 4. Gypsy (originally Suzuki Jimny 410). Its production for non-military purposes stopped in the late 90s. Original Jimny: Standard, 1. 2000 (originally Rover SD1): Huge swanky saloon, yet another "luxury car" although of very dubious quality, rarely seen on the roads those days. Was like an Audi of these days and much rarer to spot. This car was no longer available in 1993 but till around 1988. Original Rover SD1: ,Tata, Tata started building passenger cars in the early 90s and were quite a hit. 1. Sierra: Off roader. 2. Estate: A cool but somewhat underpowered station-wagon. There was a variant of the Estate which was a sedan, seen once in a blue moon. Can't seem to remember the model. Sipani, 1. Montana and Montana D1: A good looking small car based on Daihatsu Charade. Sipani were the original small car manufacturers of India building Badal and Dolphin based on small cars from UK company Reliant. (Reliant had a three-wheeled small car, Robin, the front having only a single wheel, one of them made famous by Mr. Bean. The Badal was its Indian clone). Here's the Montana. I'd really have liked to quote the prices, but just don't have the data. Shortly after this, Maruti Zen with its "jellybean" curves was introduced. By the mid/late 90s, Daewoo Matiz and Daewoo Cielo had also arrived in the Indian market followed by Hyundai Santro. The big auto-revolution of India had been well underway.
Suzuki Jimny. Compact, light, genuine selectable 4WD. Half the price of anything else. nearest 4x4 in size to the original Mk 1 Land Rover and Willy's Jeep rather than the inflated wannabes more common today.
That depends on what kind of off-road driving you’ll be doing. If you’re going to be doing technical trails where you’ll be negotiating rocks, mud, uneven ground then a vehicle with a smaller wheelbase and good ground clearance would probably be the one to go for, something like a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon or Suzuki Jimny. If you’re going to do overlanding, long trips through the wilderness, that involves driving on dirt roads and camping in different places then a large vehicle like Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol are better options. Most people want something that can do a bit of everything and there are plenty of models in between for every buyer at every price point…
First things first, the Suzuki Jimny would be arriving at our shores sometime during the second half of 2021. This means a lot to us as the Jimny was a classified volume seller for Suzuki in tough markets such as the USA and Europe. However, it will have some serious competition coming in the form of the Mahindra Thar, which was pretty much reborn in a modern avatar this year. Since the question asked is solely about the performance of the Jimny and Thar, I would like to point them out from their engines. Suzuki Jimny. Coming to the Jimny first, I reckon it will be coming here only with a petrol variant. This is given the fact that Maruti Suzuki are against the sale of diesel motors for the time being. Thus, this leads us to the option of a sole petrol motor which is seen on the Jimny in international markets. That is a 1.5 litre petrol motor which does make 101 BHP of power along with 142 Nm of torque. There is also talk of the Jimny sourcing its motor from the Vitara sold globally, which is a 2.0 litre motor making in excess of 180 BHP power. There is again a chance of the Jimny getting a launch with both these engines simontaneously, which would make it quite an exciting prospect here but for the time being, it remains yet to be disclosed. Mahindra Thar. Now coming to the Thar, it is offered with an option of a turbocharged petrol engine which is newly developed by the firm. This is the 2.0 litre mStallion Turbo which is available with 150 BHP of power and 300 Nm of torque. By the time of its launch, it received rave reviews from both automotive journals and enthusiasts alike and it currently remains the go to engine for the Thar. In fact, majority of customers who booked the Thar have chosen the Turbo petrol variant of the car, with no mid-size SUV currently offering one today. On first glance, the Thar remains an absolute value for money pick when pitted against cars from the same price point. So, it remains in the hands of Maruti Suzuki to try and match up to the value offered and hype created by the Thar with the Jimny. Verdict. As of now, this is the best possible way to compare the Thar and Jimny, with a clearer picture set to be presented in front of us during the second half of 2021. As for me, I think the Turbo seen on the Thar could prove just about superior as compared to the naturally aspirated motor as seen on the Jimny. But if Maruti Suzuki do eventually launch the Jimny with a 2.0 litre petrol motor, then the difference in power could give it a handsome advantage over the Thar. But of course, the performance of two cars is determined with criterias beyond the power it makes, but we need to wait for some time in order to get an eventual verdict. Thank you.
