What’s a better buy, the recently launched Isuzu mu-X 4x4 2018 or the Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT?

Isuzu MU-X 2018 is superior in every aspect when compared with the Toyota Fortuner .It is pretty reliable too but the drawbacks of owning Isuzu products are sparse dealership network and low resale value. If you can live with these two drawbacks then go for Isuzu MU-X else Toyota Fortuner will serve you well and will give you good night sleep regarding after sales support and resale value.

Which is more powerful IAS or IPS?

Once we were driving on national highway. It was around 2 at night. We had Toyota fortuner. In the night, we decided to for adventure. An unplanned journey, we decided. One tyre got deflated, luckily we da one extra tyre with us and we replaced it. It was somewhat like 11:30 in night. We continued our journey, so at the above time 2, in the night, again it was our bad luck. Now two tyres, punctured. No shop on the way, near to us. We walked bit and saw a person was sleeping on a bench and only with thin blanket ( probably, not washed from a long) . He was auto repair mechanic. We requested him to come with us to repair our tyres. Obviously we can't take our Toyota fortuner on shoulders to the replair shop. Now if that financially poor mechanic, shivering with cold deny to go with you, then please tell me…. Who has more power??? Mechanic or Toyota owner (a big politician my friend)

I am looking for a vehicle for which me and my wife can use to travel across India. I am specifically looking for a SUV/MPV. What are your suggestions?

Since you are looking for a vehicle to travel across the length and breadth of India, I will be only be listing the vehicles with ,4WD ,or ,AWD. Mahindra Scorpio Getaway With simple mechanicals, a robust engine, and a basic 4 wheel drive system, it is the first vehicle that comes to my mind. Its long length of 5118mm ensures that there is enough space for passengers and heavy camping gears to take on our roads. The Scorpio Getaway is heavily modifie-able. One can get AT tyres, lift kit, steel rims, and even a roof tent installed. Take this example of Gul Panag's Getaway 'Super Milo's done by Sarbloh Motors. The above Getaway incorporates some mean equipment with itself. Electric winch Off-road bumper (front and rear) Hi-lift jack Auxiliary fuel tank Stainless steel water tank A diesel tuning chip And much more. You can know more about it here- ,Off Road with Gul Panag: Ladakh - Episode 1 (Full Video) Buying this vehicle and getting it modifies to suit your needs will leave quite a dent on your wallet which is to be looked out for. Another option can be it’s Tata counterpart ,Tata Xenon XT. Image Credits: Google Images 2. The Toyota Fortuner The indomitable, Toyota Fortuner makes it to this list. Does your height ever bother you? Why?

Only while travelling, mostly in India, and it really burns me not just bothers me, especially since I am a big believer in public transport. It is not as if I am seven feet damn it. I’m only six two. I can understand they have the country designed for shorter people like in Nepal, but there are a lot of six footers in India, for heavens’ sake. I am flexible enough to hold a ball position for hours if I have to, but why force people to do this, just because they’re tall? I always aim for the leg space row in buses and planes. I can usually talk the check in staff to give me the emergency exit row that has more leg space, but I hate that bus conductors sometimes insist the front row is for women. Even when they’re only five feet two? Why do they need that extra space? In trains, although I love the side lower berths, they’re way too short. The regular ones always have my feet sticking out, and people keep mowing into them. The Shatabdis are great. Humane at last. The metros are fantastic! No seats in front of my knees! On so many occasions in buses, I have chosen to stand if my knees are likely to get crushed. Being limby does not help. Imagine getting in last in a semi filled luxury bus just to find a seat behind the empty one, so there’s nobody there to go full tilt to sleep position and absolutely torture me. The sleeper buses all have been designed to deny me proper sleep. Why can’t there be a ‘specially abled’ section for tall people with long legs in India? Then the elbow room. No I don’t want to go there. I love it on motorcycles, a whole lot more than in small cars, which are great, sensible modes of transport, but not meant for tall people at all. So, I have to make an ostentatious looking choice of a bigger car, just so I can stretch out comfortably. And that piece of garbage called the Toyota Fortuner, looks so big on the outside, but really is not what the producer should have assigned to me. I’m much happier riding my motorcycle, thank you very much. Luckily, clothes are not an issue, since I am a mostly shorts and T shirt person, but ready made shirts? Forget it. For some reason the makers assume I have to be like a hippopotamus to have long arms. I can’t get pants that fit very well either, because these days, nobody with a 32 waist seems to have any thigh muscle at all, according to the designers! I have to constantly buy bigger sizes and get them altered for a smaller waist. Or the heavenly choice of cargo pants! What a godsend. This is all India. What is even worse is having 14 size feet (US). Can’t even walk into a fancy new mall in India and get a pair of shoes. Not from Puma, Nike, Adidas, or from any other brand that all the smiling pricks endorse. I have to go abroad to buy or have someone send me something. Online, the choices are terrible. But I love the very welcoming calls of salesmen, when I get to saunter in and put my foot on the scale. It covers it fully. Only once has a Nike salesman been able to source me sandals in a week in India. I am no longer, after drawing upon all my ancestral spiritualism, annoyed by the salesmen in other hopeful places, who go, “Sir, this is size twelve, but if you try, it might fit Sir!”. Fuck you very much, Sir. In all seriousness, I have had to heal after travel ache on a number of occasions but enjoy thawing out on the volleyball court or on the beach, whenever I can. This lockdown period had made me almost fully forget my public transportation woes, but this question brought me thudding into the reality that awaits me. I dread that part. Just give me a few more inches, India. I will serve you much better, I swear.

Will a bear break into a car with a sleeping person inside if there’s no food in the car?

Never bet against a bear. They are as smart as raccoons, only bigger. I have heard that there is a bear in one of the national parks who not only learned how to open red Toyotas, but also taught her babies how to open red Toyotas. (Get a claw under one of the door edges and peel it back like a can opener, I think.) Fortunately for America’s park-goers, she did not learn to identify “all Toyotas,” but instead mapped on “red” as the primary set identifier. Bears follow the same rules burglars follow: ease of access. If you, asleep in your car, are the tastiest thing around, the bear will break into your car. If your neighbors left beer and cheese in their car, you might be spared. So tie a pack of bacon on every other car in the parking lot, and sleep soundly.

Is it possible to travel from Trivandrum to Jammu in a Toyota Fortuner?

“Is it possible to travel from Trivandrum to Jammu in a Toyota Fortuner?” Yes it is. If you are up for driving so much you can even take a trip from Trivandrum to Bangkok. Legally, there is no law against taking your vehicle to any place wherever as long as you have the required permits and visas etc. Starting with vehicle, Fortuner is a very good car to take this trip in. Its quite comfortable and can easily sustain this long stretch but not in one go. Make sure that you have maintained it well, all oil levels leakages and major parts like break etc. are in check. Tires are in proper condition to sustain this long journey and so on. Since you are talking about this, I am guessing that you will anyway manage these aspects so not detailing so much here. Now coming to legality and permits, if this is a private car then you can take it anywhere in India no matter what, however, if its a taxi or a yellow plate car, you need to get respective permits to enter different states. For some states you can acquire those permits online and for some you will have to acquire it at respective borders. Coming to taking up such a long journey, of course you need to take breaks. Since its a long journey, I would recommend driving in the day and sleeping at some hotel on the way in the night. Preferably add more stays on the way for sight seeing so you don’t end up driving 4 days in a row. For long journeys always follow these thumb rules: Prepare your vehicle well (service, maintenance, tires etc.) Carry basic repair kit like extra fuse, water bottle, some oils to top up levels, proper wiper fluid, dusting clothes and all. Preferably keep a tubeless tire repair kit too, its cheap and it can be used easily too. Don’t wait for the fuel to completely go empty before refill, always refill at 1/3rd level of the gauge. Don’t fill up to top in the tank always keep some space for air. So touching the sensor of diesel hose should be enough every time. Take adequate breaks and by time and not by kms, you will be tired after driving for few hours not driving for certain kms. If you feel even a bit sleepy, stop, stretch a bit, walk a little if needed, drink some water then start again. You will not know when that small wave can make you sleep drive. Don’t keep strict targets, if you get tires early make a pit stop there to rest and get some sleep. Never ever drink and drive and never ever drink the night before you have to drive. Drinking often causes several stomach and head troubles that you don’t notice in a regular day but while driving you need total focus. You may drive in a safe car but not everyone can afford it and you won’t have time to think before you hit. Stay hydrated, this will help you by not allowing you to feel sleepy often and it will also make you take regular loo breaks. As much as possible use day light for driving and night for rests. Keep all your toll receipts till you are back to your origin, you never know why and when you will need them. It’s better to keep them for records even afterwards. Always wear belt and ask everyone in your car to do so. Always carry a lot of water and dry food when taking such long trips especially when first time on that road. Keep offline maps as much as possible Use car chargers to keep you mobile phone charged and usable. Follow traffic rules and speed limits. Stay safe and don’t involve in any road rage. Hope you find this useful.

What does it feel like to have 100 million rupiahs monthly income in Indonesia?

I don’t earn that much but my parents do. I don’t know exactly how much they make - but they’re both entrepreneurs and have employees working for them (around 20–30 people) and based on our lifestyle, I’m pretty sure my parents make more than IDR 100 million per month. What does it feel like? One thing I know, it makes me very privileged. Both of my parents didn’t come from money, so they stepped up the ladder on their own for years. I watched, as I grew older, how we as a family of 4 improved our quality of life. We used to rent a 100m2 house for years. Our car was a very old red Kijang. I remember one time my parents had to sell some stuffs from our home because they needed to pay their employees (I think they didn’t have that many employees at that time, probably less than 5 people). Then business got better for my parents. My mother was finally able to bring more and bigger clients that come from the national army. They worked on many projects, from printing a lot of army books to (now) building a lot of army housing in many areas in Indonesia. In 2005, they finally purchased their own house, it’s near the house we used to rent but in better neighborhood. It was kind of a gambling because they only had enough cash to pay for the down payment (I think the down payment was around IDR 1 billion and the house’s price was around IDR 2 point something billion). But my mother liked the house very much they decided to just purchase it. The monthly mortgage payment was IDR 20 million (and as someone said in another answer, the monthly minimum wage in Jakarta is IDR 3 million, so imagine if you have to pay IDR 20 million/month JUST to pay for your mortgage payment). My mother is someone who takes that kind of a risk and believes in herself that she’s going to be able to do it. It’s the opposite of my dad. He worries a lot. So it’s kinda amazing to see them actually agreeing to purchase the house. It’s like a dream come true. In the old house we used to rent, there were only 3 bedrooms (1 for my parents and I, 1 for my brother (I couldn’t have peace with my brother if we sleep in the same room), and 1 tiny room for our living-in maid). Bear in mind that common middle-class family in Indonesia can afford a living-in maid rather easily considering they are paid very low (I think in 2005 they were paid IDR 500–700 thousand). We had one 21″ TV in the living room and 1 smaller TV in my brother’s room. It was a very tiny house but I grew up there until I was around 10 years old. When we finally moved to the new house, I was mesmerized with the cold, marble floors. There was also a mini-bar in the house. I couldn’t believe that my house had THAT MANY TOILETS. We have 6 toilets(!) in the house. We have a band studio, complete with the equipments (my brother and I used to play music and have our own bands). My mother had her own study in which she worked from dawn until evening. We had a quite big of a garage that could be parked by 3 cars. In my own room, I had my private bathroom with a bathtub in it. There was also a pretty decent sized backyard that could be turned into a swimming pool area had my parents wanted it to be like that. The old red Kijang? My father sold it. Now we have 4 cars (1 for each family member). My dad used to drive a 320i BMW, but now he drives a Toyota Fortuner (he still loves Toyota). My mother (rather her driver, really) drives Mazda CX-7. My brother drives 2015 Honda CR-V Prestige and I drive 2016 Honda HR-V Prestige. My parents also own 2 small pick-up trucks for business-related needs. To step up that economic ladder is… hard to describe. During my middle school years (around the time when I was 14) I still hadn’t realized that I now eat with ,that, golden spoon. I couldn’t grasp the absurdity of being picked up by my mother’s driver with a BMW car, and I couldn’t understand that my life had turned into a very different direction than before. It really dawned on me when I started high school. My group of closest friends used to joke around a lot and we do say brutal but honest words to each other, but they’re the ones who made me realize that I’m much more privileged than most of the people. I began to compare my friends’ house with mine, and I know I am luckier than most in terms of economical background. Now, when my family go shopping to the mall, we could shop until around IDR 20–30 million, ranging from buying lot of clothes, shoes, etc. For the past few years, we also had started buying more luxury products. I kinda taught my mother to do that since I think if you know which products to buy they will last years and have good prices when we want to sell them. My parents now also like business class seats better and we fly almost exclusively with Garuda Indonesia. It’s amazing to feel all of this luxury. But one thing I know for sure, money does give you a comfortable seat in life, but not necessarily happiness. All the stories I mentioned above must seem pretty nice for you guys. But I haven’t told you about the time when my mother was depressed for some time because she felt that everyone near her just wanted to be near her because of her money. I remember my father calling me into my parents’ room, and he told me to try to talk with my mother, but she didn’t give me any response. I remember I was being told by my family member that my mother then rented a room in a hotel just to be alone, not telling anyone but herself. She didn’t want to talk to anyone and didn’t response to anyone. I was still a child back then, but I think my father went to pick her up. I don’t know exactly how things changed, but after that we returned to ‘normal’ again. It was scary when I was still a child to watch my mother not being her usual self, and I was afraid that she would lose her mind. My father’s ethnicity is Batak, and so we have a very, very big family (whom we meet once in a few years or so). A lot of these people come to our house, being good and nice, and then asked my parents to lend them some money (only a small portion of them will then return it). One family had to pay for their children’s school tuition, the other wanted to start a small business, the other one wanted to get married but couldn’t afford to pay the catering, etc. My mother’s closest friend also used to sell her a lot of stuffs, from gold necklaces to insurances, which at the end my mother realized that her closest friend was taking a huge advantage of her. This all made her very stressed as she couldn’t see anyone who wanted to be with her just for the sake of being with her. I didn’t understand any of these things back then and I regret that I couldn’t help her then. I am happy to say that today my mother is a quite a happy woman and we are kinda best friends who go to salon together almost every week and have a chit-chat like best friends do. I tell her all the time that she doesn’t have to give any of her money to anyone if she doesn’t want to, and that she doesn’t owe anyone anything, and to be wary of people who try to take advantage of her. To have IDR 100 million income per month is not that big, if you were my mother. She pays many of my cousin’s school tuitions. The rest of my family is still in the lower/middle class range so she feels like she’s responsible for giving my cousins a better chance for their future. My parents also need to pay that many employees per month, so assuming with 20 employees that have average salary of IDR 4 million, they have to pay at least IDR 80 million just for the salary only. We also have 3 living-in maids now and 1 driver. Many people depend their lives on my parents’ business, so my parents have to always move and make money - because they feel like it’s their responsibility to see the people working for them prosper. My brother and I also depend a lot on my parents for money. My brother works with my mother (running the same business), so basically his money comes from my parents. Me, on the other hand, I have been working full-time with a quite good salary (IDR 7 million/month), and it should be enough for one girl to spend in 1 month. I am ashamed to admit that the luxury life I’ve grown quite accustomed to has made me quite a big spender. I’m used to buy IDR 1 million shirts when I shop with my mother. So with this salary, I couldn’t comprehend how to better manage my spending. My mother still gives me money (and she’s more than happy to do so) but I actually have a dream of earning my own money and not ask more from my parents in the future. At least now I make my own money even though my lifestyle is still being helped by my parents, but I believe in the future I’ll be able to support myself financially 100% and also give my parents some of it so they don’t have to always work hard. It’s a journey for the 4 of us and we’re not perfect. Even though it hasn’t exactly been very easy, we’re quite grateful with where we are now.

If aliens landed on Earth a million years ago, set up test equipment equal in size to an Apollo mission, walked around a little, then left, what are the chances that scientists today would find evidence of their visit?

Infinitesimal … and I’m being incredibly, hyperbolically, comically, science-fictionally ,generous,. One million years? I mean, was their equipment made of metal or some space-age-ey polymer shit? If it had enough metal (like titanium or stainless steel) in it and it got fortunately buried under volcanic ash or flooded over by a torrent and buried under sediment, then run the odds†: The probability of them landing in such a spot. The probability of that happening in time. The probability of some other event NOT happening to expose and/or destroy it. The probability of whatever remains to be located somewhere humans would ever dig. This is actually one of the problems —that puts me to sleep— when people who deny science blather on and on about missing fossils and shit. The odds against a creature landing in the right spot to get buried quickly enough, then preserved, then not re-exposed, then to be dug up (let’s face it, most of our digging is clumsy and not scientific) is infinitesimal. †But even then, I doubt it. Any alien that can traverse the stars would have technology so sickeningly advanced that it wouldn’t make those kinds of mistakes. We are working on a probe to Europa and the levels of thought put into it are gargantuan beyond your wildest dreams and that little shit will be the size of a Toyota Tercel. Those aliens —should they exist— would have long since merged with their tech. Their tech would crawl with micro-robotics. It would likely be made mostly of stuff like carbon-nano-this-or-that; boron-nitride latices; ceramic crystals. All of those things would crack, decay and break apart. Even before then, such a species would flick a switch and the items would obliterate themselves. Whatever metal were left would be eroded to particulates in a few dozen millennia.

Why is Toyota so very lethargic in launching new models in India where other competitors are bringing consumer automobile models in a wide range?

If you consider the segments where they have more of a cult following, the products available (Innova Crysta and Fortuner) are really up-to-date, modern and promising. Even if you compare them with their preceding generations, the improvement in current lineup becomes immediately apparent. However, when it comes to mass market products, I agree that Toyota is slow on launching products and even when they do (Yaris, for example), the pricing is an instant downer for a prospective customer. In fact, barring the Innova, Fortuner and Etios Petrol (to some extent), all of their cars aren't very engaging to drive. The Etios twins are due for an update, I agree. But Toyota hasn't solved what was a glaring problem with the dashboard design in all these years! Whether they are not interested in the segment or they still adore that design is anyone's guess. To conclude, yes, Toyota is lethargic in launching products in the Indian market. The Yaris is almost 3–4 years late to enter (as the craze of C-segment sedans is slowly getting replaced by compact SUVs) and it has been off to a slow start in terms of sales. The Corolla Altis seems to be too expensive for what ever performance, features and space it offers. Etios and Liva sales are on a downward spiral since the last few years. But hey, who cares when you have 30–40 lakh rupee cars in the portfolio that sell like hotcakes? Toyota definitely needs to be more proactive in the mass market segment. But honestly, I can't put the blame entirely on them. They are here for profits like everyone else. Look at manufacturers such as Fiat and Nissan sleeping like a bear with such uninspiring and outdated models in their respective portfolios. Toyota has at least stood the test of time when it comes to after sales and overall product quality. Thank you.
