Have you ever had a fraud call experience?

Lots in 2016, claiming that my phone number had won Citibanks bumper draw that I won 5.5 mln USD and another a BMW draw informing that my mobile had won 4.5mln British pounds. Recently, some lady called me on my mobile introducing herself as some ‘X’ claiming that she had millions of dollars in money and that she wanted to donate 1.5 mln dollars for charity purposes in my country. All these fraudsters are common in one aspect, getting us to respond back by divulging all personal & bank details. Conning as an hobby.

Is it better to buy a used or new BMW?

Throughout my short time as a car fanatic (approximately 18 years), my family and I learned a few main lessons, one of them, was never to buy a used BMW, (or you can… it really depends). During the Christmas season of 2015, I had been young and I had visited the local orthodontist to get my braces adjusted. Upon leaving, I begged my dad to go drive over the the used car lot around the corner, as my affinity for cars had really started kicking by then… visiting car lots had been one of my favorite pastimes. When we arrived, a Blue BMW coupe caught my eye like nothing else. I’m sure I said “wow, dad, look at this!!” or something along those lines. The price was not too high, $14,900, and it had 82k miles on it. I’ll attach a picture of it below somewhere. To that point in time, my parents had driven only Toyota’s, Lexus, Mitsubishi’s, Honda’s, etc. To all of those vehicles, 82k was just the start to a very long life. But for a BMW, we learned that to be quite the opposite. We ended up returning to the used car lot the following day, with the intention of seriously looking at the car as a christmas present for my mother. She needed a new car at that point and financially we weren’t in the best spot to buy off-the-lot. We ended up doing the transaction in a matter of two days… (never getting the car privately inspected- biggest human error) and picked up the car on December 24th and stored it at my mother’s parents (my grandparents) house until Christmas morning, when my grandfather drove it over. It took only a matter of a month before parts starting breaking down, starting with an electronic seat belt toy that brought the seat belt closer to you to make up for the extra long coupe door. That was not a necessary fix, but something that did break. Within only w couple of days after that, the Valve Cover Gasket started acting up, throwing check engine lights and many, many, drops of oil on the driveway. For About $3000 in repairs over three weeks, we had learned our lesson. In over two years, we had put maybe 10k miles on that car with the occasional $700 repair twice a year. We sold it with 92k miles in 2017 or 2018 (I don’t exactly remember) for $9900. This is what it had looked like when we sold it… Absolutely beautiful car. Now if you’ve stuck around long enough to read this, you’ll know that a car guy never learns from his mistakes. At the age when I was able to drive, I knew I wanted something of spirited driving style and also something that I could look cool in for the high school parking lot. I knew exactly what to talk to my parents about…. a Used BMW This time, however, I used due diligence in my purchase. The car ,I, had purchased was a 2013 BMW 328i Xdrive with 68k miles. I had driven to the car about 45 minutes away to take a look at it, while comparing a couple of other potential vehicles closer to me. I had the car Inspected by a BMW mechanic before dropping thousands of dollars on it, and also made sure that it had every single record in the glovebox, as well as a fully clean and documented Carfax. I also bought the vehicle from a private seller, who was able to tell me all she knew about the vehicle, unlike a dealer who was just trying to sell it to make a couple of bucks. It’s a Turbo 4 cylinder, so it’s more simple and more common to work on, and a mass produced engine so I knew parts were available. Here’s what my first car looked like at 16. (and if you’re asking me how I afforded it, there’s a lot of lawns mowed, lots of cars detailed, and about 7–8 years of christmas and birthday money) and of course, I should include a picture of what it looks like now after my two years, and 16k miles of ownership (,that has been completely trouble-free!!,). I always keep up with preventative maintenance and my regular oil changes, tires, brakes, plugs and coils, etc. It keeps the car sharp! So in some sense I believe that you can be fine with buying a used BMW as long as you’re doing your due diligence as a buyer. I learned that some used cars are better than others, and that when s**t hits the fan with my used bmw I will need another car with the same service history to back up the longevity of that car, too! But I think i’ll definitely be able to sneak another couple of years out of this one first. In short to answer your question, buy new if you can. Just be ready to pay out for a used one if you get one like the blue coupe. But you could also get lucky and get one like my black sedan, it’s a luck of the draw!! Thanks for reading my story!

Which brand of car is better, Mercedes or BMW?

This question has been answered up and down and all over the place on Quora, so I won’t beat a dead horse. So I’m going in a different direction with this answer to call a draw and explain why. There was a time when BMW and Daimler were totally different brands and had different driving philosophies. Daimler Benz was more about luxury and safety than the driving dynamic and BMW was the opposite. But this never meant either wasn’t safe, luxurious, or fun to drive. It’s just that each brand emphasized each aspect more than the other depending on the brand. A commonality from German reunification through the very early 2000’s was that both built solid quality made vehicles. Today in this world of modular platforms, crossovers, SUVs, and electrification the difference is like night and day. While still relatively well made, a German car ain’t what it used to be. You don’t often see BMWs and Mercedes made through the 2000s and 2010s with hundreds of thousands of miles on them like you did with ones made in the 1980s and 90s. In fact you don’t often see these more recent cars made through this period on the roads like we used to when they were newer. I suspect many either are scrapped or sit in garages or lots as they are very expensive to repair. With this all in mind to answer your question I’d say nowadays it’s difficult to discern which is the better brand. I’d say they’re both about equal as they became even more direct competitors through the years. Both brands are watered down with utility vehicles for just about every price point, that when you make a vehicle for everyone it’s hard to keep your own distinctive identity. The only difference moving forward is how you service them and both do that very differently as I explain below. As we get closer to electrification mass scale the next four years, both brands announced a substantial cut back in their product portfolios. Both admit they make too many different cars. For example, Mercedes makes about 21 different convertibles, and that’s way too many, as dropheads are compelling vehicles we’d all like to have, but they aren’t hot sellers. Maybe we’ll see a return of the old with a change of the new when they are both fully electrified. And a warning to you and all, when the electric conversion is complete for both brands, both will be different car companies. It’ll be like starting over for them again with an entirely different and separate invention electric cars are. And with the Electric Mini Mess, BMW Group is not getting off to a good start. But Mercedes isn’t far ahead with a 200 mile range BEV SUV with torque that really should be tow rated. Daimler needs to straighten out their battery issues as well there’s no excuse anymore with cheap ionization. For now, the difference is that the last time I checked BMW still offers a comprehensive warranty that includes routine maintenance as free with every new car warranty purchase. This means that whether you buy or lease a new or used BMW that’s still under the 4 year 48,000 mile warranty BMW will take care of the car and the maintenance. That’s hard to beat. BMW Group inherited this service philosophy from the Rolls Royce brand when they bought the rights. They applied this to all brands. “See a light bulb out? Don’t touch it. We’ll fix it.” There was a time when Daimler did the same but I understand they don’t anymore, they now charge a customer with everything and only honor the warrantee repair itself. Their service plan is not as comprehensive as BMW’s. This means as I understand it they even charge for the oil in the oil change. You have to spend money for a more comprehensive coverage plan for no charge. It’s these kind of things that make a BMW purchase over Mercedes more compelling. You might save money on your Mercedes purchase comparatively but you spend more on servicing and both brands are expensive to repair. So is Mercedes better than BMW? I’d say you really have to take a look at each product in each segment. The Mercedes S Class and the BMW 3 Series are always the cars to beat, especially the S Class. I tell my readers the S Class is truly the Queen of the Roads as car royalty. The 7 Series is also a good car, but it never was, and will never be like the S Class to wonder if BMW recently gave up on competing with Mercedes, to just go off and build the car the way they want to. The E Class and 5 Series depends on how they are equippped, in what configuration, and whether they are fitted by AMG or M Series respectively, and how. The brands were so different and opposite each other decades ago, but as both brands became more popular in markets like North America and China they became more mainstream than exclusive luxury. And in doing this their identities got lost in volume sales. Shop carefully and do your research for each model. That’s what I say! I hope this answers your question.

Coca Cola used to contain cocaine, 7up used to be made with Lithium (mood stabilising drug) - Fanta was created by Coke in order to circumvent an embargo on Nazi Germany. What are some other little known historical facts about popular brands?

Puma and Adidas were a single company and a family bussines . On 1 July 1924 , tho brothers , Adolf and Rudolf Dassler founded Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory . They collaborated until 1948 . They split because their different political opinions , Rudolf being a more ardent National Socialist . After they split , Adolf founded Adidas ( ,Adi Das,ler ) and Rudolf Puma . BMW made aeroplane engines for the German Army during WW1 . After the War , The Treaty of Versailles forbade the German Military from having aeroplanes, BMW had to reconvert . The leadership of the company chose to produce cars . The logo of BMW represents a spinning propeller. I am very sure everyone knows Barbie, but I think fewer people have met Barbie’s sister, Bild Lilli. In ’50 , a German newspaper had a rubric of jokes accompanied with some drawings and caricatures . The principal character of these jokes and drawings was a blond girl , Bild Lilli . The jokes and drawings were more for grown ups . The newspaper decided to make Lilli dolls . They were very popular : men put them on the dashboard of their cars or give one to their girlfriends . In 1956 , Ruth Handler was on a trip to Europe with her kids : Barbara and Kenneth . Her daughter was bored of all her dolls and she wanted something new . Ruth saw Lilli and was inspired to create a new type of doll for American girls .

When were you treated poorly by a car dealership until they found out you were rich?

Accidental Porsche Customer This happened in a suburb of Detroit, MI circa 2014. I was in the market for a SUV, as my 2007 Civic was recently totalled in an accident (not my fault). The insurance gave me a car for one month for free and I had to get a new vehicle by the month’s end. A little personal background about me. I am an Indian citizen from Tamil Nadu but living here in the US for 12 years. I am economically stable and only 2 years back I had bought a brand new house in a nice neighborhood. I think twice before I spend and check the pros/cons of the purchase. I had no intention of indulging in luxury cars. But, the accident changed everything. Since the Civic was a daily driver, I needed to make up my mind fast and get a new one. Since this is Michigan, I opted for a new 4WD SUV for the harsh winters. Now that I am flush with cash from the insurance for the totalled Civic, I contemplated a mid-level luxury SUV. I wanted a Porsche Macan since it was touted as a sports car/CUV in ads, but it had a wait list of 6 months. So, I had the BMW X3 -M package or Audi SQ5 as my best alternatives. I called the local BMW dealer and asked for an appointment at 12 PM on a Saturday. This was totally unnecessary because you can just walk-in and see the cars in any dealership. But, I just did this. Yes, I do have the Indian accent and yes, my surname is long. So, the dealership knows whom they are expecting. In the call, I made myself very clear that I am looking for a brand new BMW X3. No used models or old versions. Dealership-1 I went to the dealership the following Saturday, 5 minutes early. Yes, I was decently dressed. I was greeted by the employee at the desk and was politely asked to wait for my sales representative who it seems was dealing with a customer. There was a couple of customers just looking around and 3 sales reps ALONE in their offices. I waited for 15 minutes and became restless. Once again I approached the desk and asked for my rep. I was told it will take approximately 30 more minutes for him to come see me. I did not show my impatience and asked if any other employee can talk to me. They said everybody else was busy. I told them that I was highly disappointed with them and I will take my business next door to Audi. They said good luck sir and bade me goodbye. The Audi dealership was very professional, but I didn’t like the model. So, I came back home contemplating what to do next? The next day, I got a call from the BMW dealership (not the same Sales rep) who apologized and invited me back. Although I was upset and did not want to go back, the draw of BMW was too great, and I desperately need a car to my work. So, I got appointment for the following Saturday. This time Ms. X greeted me and the customer experience was pleasant. She had recently joined BMW from a different brand, and I can see that she doesn't have any airs associated with her. I took the X3 for a test drive, and I liked it. We came back to her office and crunched the numbers for payment. She took me through their online website, specced up the X3 to my liking with accessories and came up with a number. I had done this many times before through their website, same webpage, and I know what the number is going to be. I have not started my negotiation yet. At that instant, her Manager butted in. He introduced himself and started talking. He told me point blank that whatever the numbers offered by Ms. X were final and only for this day. Take it or leave it. Ms. X was horrified. I asked politely, saying that I need more time to think over the number. He reiterated that the deal stands for only today. I said that I am not going to commit to anything right now, and after that he bade me goodbye. Ms. X apologized a lot on the way out and asked me to think it over. But, I made up my mind to go to another BMW dealer in another neighborhood. Dealer -2 This was the worst experience ever. Now that I already have a number in my hand, I thought that it would be easy. The second dealership was bigger than the first. I was dressed in a suit. The Sales rep went through all the initial hoops, and I told him that I had done this before in Dealership-1 and asked him to give me a fair deal. He went to talk to his Manager, who literally stormed into my room where I was sitting. He asked what my profession is, and what I do for living. I said that I work for X company in top management and live in X affluent neighborhood. Since he was blunt and had no qualms asking questions to gauge my financial conditions, I put away all my pretensions and did what I came to do. Point blank, I asked how much deal he can give me. He got agitated and pointed that they won’t undercut another dealership and asked me to take my business elsewhere. It was totally ridiculous. Right on his wall, there was a big poster proclaiming, “Whatever deals Audi give, We give Better!!” I came out frustrated and thought of taking the Audi. As a last resort, I contemplated Porsche, even though I knew I couldn’t get it immediately. Fortunately, there was a Porsche dealer in the same building with Audi (as both are VW subsidiaries) in another suburb. Immediately, I went there. There were only 2 guys in the dealership that afternoon. One of them took care of me immediately even though I didn’t have any appointment. That was the best experience ever. They confirmed that 4 new Porsche Macans arrived only the previous day from Germany. He enquired whether i would like to have a test drive immediately. I took it. The Sales guy was very calm and answered every question. Once inside his office after the test drive, he showed the brochures. Once in a while, other employees passing by his office said hi, and told me how lucky I was to get a Porsche and how sporty it is. Of course, I negotiated the price, and they gave me a fair deal. I told them that I would need one more day because I wanted to show it to my wife. He accepted gladly. The next day my wife test drove it, loved it, and we brought a black Porsche Macan Sport home. It was 20 grand more than BMW but it was worth it. For the next week, I called him many times if I got any queries. He was happy to talk to me. Every time I go for servicing, I see him and talk to him. After all these days, the one thing I remember clearly is the warm welcome I received from Porsche the moment I stepped inside. I felt that I belonged there. Yes, my next car is going to be a 911.

Which is the better buy: Audi, BMW or Mercedes?

BMW has sold out. It ,was, a great car company. Look at 3 series cars from 15 years ago and check out the re-sell value on those. People prefer the cars from then to now. Note the automotive press reviews of recent BMWs. It’s not the same company. This is normal. A company gets huge based off of fundamental principles, then it gets greedy and saturates the market, then it rests on it’s laurels only to get smacked by a new company - a company with passion. Mazda is the new BMW if you ask me. Everything about Mazda is substantially improved over BMW - except the infotainment system. But thats coming along. I tolerate the issues here, because unlike everyone else, Mazda provides free map and software updates. Not one BMW on Car and Drivers 10 best. Only the M2 last year. The X1 is so emasculating that I wince when I see a man driving one. AUDI,! Audi.. the A3 looks like the A4.. which looks like the A6. If the A7 didn’t taper like a dog turd toward the back, it would look like a slightly longer A6. Why people spend 80,000 on a loaded A6 when they could spend 40,000 on a A4 is beyond me. Your kids need 2 inches more knee room?.. and you’re willing to spend 40 grand more? Also, Audi is boring. terribly boring to look at. Honestly, I would say hideous. Cars, luxury cars, should NOT look like a child’s drawing of a car. Here’s a new Audi in good weather: Ha! Kidding! Had you fooled. That’s actually how a child draws a car and how Audi designers find inspiration. Here’s a 80,000 A6: Oops, sorry, that’s an A4. here’s an A6: Jeezus, can you believe people pay twice as much for the A6? I can. Here’s the A3: Handsome little hatch. I love this, and I almost bought the RS3! Which is an awesome car. The only Audi with personality (but still ugly, like a kids drawing). BENZ,! So.. the only car I would buy between these German cars is a Benz. A proper German car. NOT THE CLA FOR GODSAKES. That car was made by marketing, not engineering. But a C-class AMG63 is the shit. The E Class AMG Wagon is.. well.. it’s amazing. It’s HUGE and will run circles around the Audi’s and Bimmer’s. And there’s Porsche, but Porsche sold out when they made SUVs (which are overpriced gas guzzlers that cannot perform - only performs when compared to a Chevy Trailblazer). TRUTH,! And.. here’s the thing I hate about German cars: Mostly bought by status seekers and not car lovers. People with curated instagram accounts..screw those people. Car lovers buy wagons, AMGs, any 911, older M3s. I don’t have a clue what BMW is thinking with its X1, and X3. Or the four door 400 and the 2 door. Or why the interior looks just like it did 15 years ago. I don’t get how Benz makes the interior so sumptuous but BMW cannot. I’m clueless how Audi can make such beautiful interiors and then waste them on such insipid, uninspired designs. Porsche.. SUVs for “the wife” and 4 cylinders with a turbo for car lovers who can’t afford the 911. The gems are the Benz C43, the E class and that bargain of a car: Audi RS3.

What car holds its value the longest?

Most cars, even if well maintained, go down in value, but if you hold them long enough, some go way back up . There are some that go up in value from the moment you buy it. My BMW Z8 did. The day I went to sign for it, there was a guy in the lobby ready to pay me $25K to step aside and let him buy it. Today, it is worth about 1.5X the $135K sticker price, and that’s with 49K miles on it. It’s like I’m being paid to drive it. If I could have kept the mileage below 1,000, it would be worth 2X MSRP or even more. But I have no regrets. It may be a garage queen, but I do drive it some, carefully. Below is a picture of it with 7 of my closest car-buddy friends (mine’s top right). Other cars that appreciate include limited edition Ferrari’s and Lamborghinis. The problem with Ferrari is that you have to be invited to get on the wait list. Historically, other car that have held value without ever dropping below MSRP include AC Cobra, Sunbeam Tiger, (sold mine - with regrets), Ford GT, limited production Corvetes like the ZR-1s, etc. There are plenty examples, subject to a specific selection criteria. The trick is to find the car with a nation-wide waiting list before the first one is delivered. Get on that list with a non-refundable deposit ($1–2K should do, but maybe more) and draw up a simple agreement that says you’ll pay MSRP the day it arrives, sight-unseen. Deep dive the automotive press. I did the same on a Ford GT, and it got ugly, and the Ford dealer ended up paying me $40K to cancel the agreement 2 years later and let them keep the car. But that’s another story - it’s here on Quora. With regard to instant appreciation, if there is even one un-spoken for car on the lot, that ain’t it. So forget doing a test drive. So that’s what makes this picture (below) so special - there was never a single Z8 in a BMW showroom anywhere that had not already been sold. BMW didn’t re-neg like the Ford dealer tried to. The wait list was greater than the entire planned production run before the 1st car was delivered. The 30 second commercial had to be pulled almost immediately. But we packed in 8 of them into a dealer’s showroom for a party we now call the “8/8/08 8:08:08 Party” This was a send-off party for us shipping the 8 cars to California for Pebble Beach Car Week. This picture was taken on 8/8/08 at 8:08:08 pm, and the dealer (Classic BMW of Plano, Tx) popped 8 bottles of champagne to launch the pre-shipment celebration party. We flew out to CA a few days later, picked them up at the San Mateo BMW dealer and had the time of our life. Prime parking for these 8 + 24 Californian = 32 Z8s. Then the 8 were shipped back to Texas. Classic BMW sold every one of their allotment (of about 16), but has steadily collected them off the used car market and now the dealership owner personally owns 12. I don’t think any of them are for sale - for now. But if they are, it certainly north of the MSRP of 18 years ago.

What important financial rule do most people break?

A friend of mine recently bought a BMW 3 series that costs approx Rs 50 lakhs Everyone in our group was crazily congratulating him and his Facebook post was full of congratulatory comments. He was happy as hell in his success This is the biggest financial mistake that people make, ,Buying things that they don’t need, for the sake of social prestige, impulse emotions and show off The ecstasy of a depreciating asset is momentary But the pain of the Rs 75,000/month EMI that he would be paying for the next 8 years is going to be permanent, which is exactly half his monthly salary Half the salary on Car EMI ? Its not a mistake, its financial suicide that is becoming so mainstream After paying 75k for 8 years, what will be the value of his prized possession ? 20 % maybe Which effectively means 40 lakh rupees of hard earned money blown away in thin air The most Important financial rule that people break requires no Knowledge of finance “,If you buy things you do not need,, soon ,you, will have ,to, sell ,things you, need” - Warren Buffet A Hyundai or a Honda works fine for most commuting needs A normal android phone can do almost everything at 10 % the price of an Iphone Branded Clothes, watches and shoes from high fashion brands are not a need but a mistake It’s good to enjoy your life and buy some things that you want that may not be necessities, but it’s crucial to know the difference between a “need” and a “want” and draw a strict line somewhere.

Do you find, as a law enforcement officer, that you tend to stay away from social events? It has been said police officers often get inundated with peoples problems at such events so tend to only socialize with their peers.

This is one problem I could have done without. PC Penfold drove to the golf club. We were playing a police competition - which confirms to me there is a tendency to socialize with other police officers. It is just the way of most occupations, I think. In the car park, we saw the Chief Constable's car, a top of the range BMW. PC Penfold stopped his bucket of rust on wheels next to it. "Be careful when you get out," he warned, "I don't want that BMW scratching my car." We climbed out and removed our clubs from the boot. “That's the Chief’s car,” PC Penfold pointed out, “he normally gets a driver to bring him to these events, he must be driving himself.” I nodded in agreement as I struggled to assemble my caddy car. “Yeah. That means he’ll not have a beer when he finishes, I hope I'm not playing with him, he is such a miserable sod when he is not drinking,” PC Penfold continued, laughing at his observation. At that precise moment, the Chief Constable popped his head up from behind his car. He had been bending down tying the laces on his golf shoes and had heard every word. He glowered at us before walking off into the clubhouse. We got sorted and meekly made our way into the clubhouse to hear the draw. We took seats at the back of the lounge. The secretary made the draw, and the last three names called out were, Penfold, McEwan and THE CHIEF.
