The Honda S600's cabin is an E-type shrunk in the wash. The gear shift looks like a post North sea swim penis, but the gate is so direct. 57ps of power and almost 100mph from a 600cc powertrain in 1964. It’s when it goes straight, and turns in a predictable steady way, and doesn’t wallow around on a turn, or over or understeer into a tree or oncoming traffic. Stopping in a predictably short distance and continuing to go straight while it stops counts too. When I was 17 the cheap cars were all early 1960’s land yachts. I loved these cars, but driving them with the loose steering and crummy brakes was a challenge. I was in quite a few crashes. Then I was introduced to the Honda Civic. The Honda goes where you point it, and gets out of its own way. The “handling” was comparable to English sports cars like the Austin Healy Sprite or MGB 1965 Honda s600 1963 Austin Healy Sprite Another feature of “handling” is being in touch with the road, And I assure you , in one of these teeny cars , you are in touch with the road. Promo shot of my first Honda Civic CVCC 1500cc Civic. It had a roof, a radio, and some room in the back for your stuff. I drove Civics for 42 years. They served me well. Then another car passed in front of me and got my attention. I went and drove it, and bought it for the same price I was going to pay for another Civic coming off a 2 year lease ( the best way to buy them). So apparently Detroit learned a couple of things in 42 years anyway, because it “Handles” quite well. 2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon 3.0 liter 6 One interesting feature of driving one of these rare babies is that people assume it’s one of these Cadillac Sleeper Wagon: 2012 CTS-V With 750HP Mine is NOT a fire breathing 8 cylinder 200 mph supercar, and that is fine with me. It’s fun. I get lots of revving at lights from various fast cars though.
They did at least once…the Honda S600 Sports Car. Honda S600 - Wikipedia I suspect the 4 cylinder, water cooled, in-line engine owed a lot to Honda’s motorcycle motive power.
1. ,Honda, became the second largest car manufacturer in Japan in 2001. 2. The Honda Prelude was the world's first four-wheel drive car. 3. The Passport built by Isuzu was the first SUV that Honda launched. 4. It was the first Japanese car manufacturer to launch the dedicated luxury brand in 1986-named Acura. 5. The Honda S600 was the first Honda-built, Honda car and was available in the fastback and the convertible models.
Multiple way tie. Honda S600 (not to be confused with the Mercedes W140 V12 luxo-barge of the same designation): Honda S800: Honda S2000:
Honda type A - 1949 First production Honda Motorcycle Honda T 360 - 1963 - First 4-wheeler Honda S500 - 1963 - 4 months after the T360 Images and Info from Wikipedia. I owned a number of Honda motorcycles over the years, and was a big fan - until I switched to BMWs. In my teens I really wanted a Honda S600 sports car. Ended up with an MGB instead.
Subjective of course. Hondas are generally reliable, and the 10th gen, of which I have owned two, are edgier and less boring than most cars. And are brilliant to drive. Just for fun, look up the 1963 Honda S600, the first car Honda sold. Stunning.
It can. It has been. The Honda S600 was chain driven. Many Frazer Nashes were chain driven. Yes another OP who should have asked “if” instead of “why”.
Yes. But only a particular type of car. I would buy a classic small roadster in yellow, either a Honda S600 roadster or a small Fiat 850 roadster. But nothing else.
The Datsun 1600 and 2000 come to mind as well as the original 240Z before it was emasculated by federal bumpers and emissions equipment in the U.S. The Honda S600 The Toyota 2000GT, the Toyota S800 (800 CCs and 44 Horses but at 1300 pounds, still fun to drive.) The Toyota GT-One. Built to homologate for LeMans competition, but only two road legal cars were ever built.
Honda S600 or S800. This car combined gorgeous looks with engineering that was simply phenomenal. These were the first cars Honda ever made, and yet 60 years ago they had disc brakes, a rev limit of 9,500 in the S600 and 8,500 in the S800, a higher output per liter than anything else made, a precise manual transmission that would hold its own today, etc. Pure doesn't begin to do it justice. My small 1967 MGB was a Goliath by comparison. I saw one in person years ago inside a Honda showroom parked next to the iconic S2000. The S2000 CR was cool. But the red S600 was riveting.
