Which bike is best Royal Enfield Thunderbird or Bajaj Dominar 400 for long life daily use, long tour and comfort for back seat passenger?

Before I start telling the story of a bird and beast, I would like to start by saying that I am 5 feet 6 inches. Pretty much well built (I exercise thrice a week) and avid biker and Traveller. I learnt to ride on the Yamaha RX 100, spent some time with the HH Splendor then finally got my first motorcycle, the Bajaj Pulsar 180 2007 model. It was my first dream come true experience and it's still close to my heart. Fast forward to 2010, after commuting on numerous scooters, I finally bought a pre-owned RE Thunderbird 350. Got the bike completely serviced and was enjoying the feeling of “jab bullet chale to duniya ruke" (translation - the world makes way for the bullet. Credit - an old ad campaign by RE) during my college. Took a lot of practice to get the bike started on the first kick and then eventually came the issues, Rainy days, the rear brake of RE bikes goes into hibernation. The sound started to feel like “all show no go”. One of my friend's slipper sole melted after he kept his feet on the exhaust(he was too drunk to realize that) but that is hazardous. For my height, it is sometimes difficult to even nudge the bike. Had to adopt a ritual of checking the fuel manually before I left for college (no fuel gauge) Parts are expensive maybe that's how the manufacturer wants it or maybe high price due to high sales (from a business perspective, it should be other way round). If the engine is too cold specially during winter, the get ready for kicking and making both your legs partially useless. Overtime, I had nothing to like about the bike. Finally after 8 I bid goodbye to that giant and brought my first love 'the Pulsar 180′ to Bangalore and life was bliss. The Pulsar still shines in my own parking lot. I resorted to scooter because they are the best in Bangalore traffic. But finally in 2018, I felt I found another bike that appeals to me. The Dominar from Bajaj. Yes, Bajaj motorcycles have their issues, c'mon no one is perfect in this world not even Ducati. But it still fares way lot better than RE machines. Took a test ride in 2017 but at that time they did not have the black color. So I waited, in 2018 the matte black model came in the market and I was head over heels with that beauty. Got it delivered within 2 days quickly clocked 5000kms within city and after the second servicing I went off to Pune. My first taste of 6 lane national highways. 900 KMS and 13 uninterrupted hours with the Dominar. At the end of it, all I can say is, Braking is amazing. I did a 131 kmph to 0 in about 12 seconds. Emergency braking response is good. Tested it enough all thanks to pedestrians behaving worse than donkeys. The pickup is good. You can touch 100 kmph in the 3rd gear. The bike is extremely stable even at speeds above 120 kmph. The seating posture is comfortable, upright with a forward stance. The position of the foot pegs and handlebar is nicely done and does not give you pain in any part of the body. The front seat is beyond comfortable. The light is great at night with regards to reach and extremely helpful in pitch dark roads. But an incoming halogen bulb does undermine the credibility of the LEDs. The tires are superb. Haven't scrapped the knee to the tarmac but surely scrapped the edge of my boots quite a few times. Handling is best at constant speeds. However, maneuvering in traffic is a task. Fuel consumption is good. I am still getting close to 32 kmpl on highway and 29 kmpl on average so nothing to complain about. Maintenance costs is very reasonable. Service should be done every 5k KMS and the average cost ranges between 3.5 - 4.5 k which is reasonable. I do love the KTMs but I find it very hold to my liking. I also agree that RE has come a long way since 2010 and it's Interceptor is the most amazing motorcycle ever made by RE. But it still has a long way to go. I have been to Pune, Mumbai, places near Bangalore, covered entire Rajasthan on the Dominar and all I can say after doing over 25,000 on the odo within a year, I want more of that thrill. As for Royal Enfield, maybe I will have one of those in my garage when I am 70 and need the thump to match with my heartbeat. Till then, I won't hold back.

Who would you consider top 5 inspiring people from each Indian state?

I'm from Karnataka. I've already noticed that a few answers are about people from Karnataka. I'll include the ones that haven't been mentioned. 1. HH Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji Sri Vishwesha Teertha was born in 1931 at Ramakunja to a Shivalli Tulu Brahmin family and his pre-Sanyasa name was Venkataramana Bhat. He was ordained into ,Sanyasa, at the young age of 8 years in 1938. It has been 77 years since he took Sanyasa. In the age of fake babas, swamis, and godmen, here is one really authentic great swamiji. He has been instrumental in setting up many charitable and social organizations across the country. The Poornaprajna Vidyapeetha that was established in 1956 offers free education for all students willing to learn ancient Indian culture. The Akhila Bharat Madhwa Maha Mandal [ABMM] center started by the Swami is said to have helped many of poor students. He has established math centres at various holy places in India. These centres are of great help to many pilgrims. The Akhila Bharat Madhwa Maha Mandal [ABMM] has many hostels all over Karnataka at places like ,Bengaluru,, ,Hubli,, ,Dharwad, to name few. These hostels give preference to very-poor students and give them accommodation and food at almost free. For normal students it charges a very nominal monthly charge to run its various activities. He has given Vaishnava Deeksha to people from all communities, irrespective of their caste. He has strongly opposed the ill-treatment of dalits by uppercaste Hindus. He is also the spiritual guru of many politicians like L K Advani, Uma Bharti, and others. He was also invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his swearing-in ceremony. 2. Dr Rajkumar, Who doesn't know this man? One of the greatest ever actors and a cultural icon of Karnataka. Affectionately called as Annavaru, he became an actor at the age of 8 by entering Gubbi Veeranna's troupe. From being a poor kid in Gajanur, he worked hard and became the best actor Kannada cinema has ever seen. Despite all the fame that was earned by him, he remained a simple and humble person throughout his life. 3. Prakash Padukone At the time when badminton was just a minor sport in India, Prakash Padukone won the All England Championship title in 1980 and became the first Indian to do so. Prakash is considered to be one of the greatest ever badminton players and is definitely the greatest Indian badminton player of all time. He, along with ,Geet Sethi,, has co-founded ,Olympic Gold Quest, which is a Foundation for the Promotion of Sports in India. Prakash Padukone's life story has been chronicled in the biography ',Touch Play,', by Dev S. Sukumar. The book is only the second biography of any badminton player. 4. Sudha Murthy Everyone knows about Narayana Murthy, but his wife Sudha Murthy is also equally inspiring. She completed her BE in BVB College of Engineering, Hubli and stood first in her class, getting a gold medal as a result. She did her Masters in IISc, Bangalore, again standing first in her class. She became the first female engineer hired at India's largest auto manufacturer ,TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company, (TELCO). She joined the company as a Development Engineer in Pune and then worked in Mumbai & Jamshedpur as well. Murthy had written a postcard to the company's Chairman, J R D Tata complaining of the "men only" gender bias at TELCO. As a result, she was granted a special interview and hired immediately. The initial capital for establishing Infosys was provided by her when she gave ₹10,000 to her husband to start Infosys. She started Infosys Foundation and has since been involved in various philanthropic works across the country. Apart from her philanthropic activities, she is also a famous writer with some of her books being brilliant works in English and Kannada. 5. Da Ra Bendre I noticed that previous answers included Kuvempu and DVG. Da Ra Bendre is also considered to be the greatest ever Kannada poets along with them. Dattatreya Ramachandra Bendre (31 January 1896 – 26 October 1981), popularly known as Da. Ra. Bendre, was one of the most notable ,Kannada, poets of the ,Navodaya Period,. He was given the honorific ,Varakavi, ('gifted poet'). Bendre was awarded the ,Jnanpith Award, for ,Kannada,, the highest literary honor conferred in ,India,. He wrote under the pen-name of ,Ambikatanayadatta, (,lit,, "Datta, Child of Ambika"). He also held the title ,Karnataka Kula Thilaka, ("The ornament of the Kannada Nation") conferred by ,Udupi, ,Adamaru, ,Math,. Bendre is usually considered the father figure of modern ,Kannada poetry,. His poems are linked to the Kannada poetic tradition through their use of folklore, the ,vachanas, and the ,Kirtans,. Apart from native prosodic forms, Bendre also employed native imagery, folk beliefs, references to ,Indian mythology, and the language spoken by the common people.,Nada Lila, ("The Play of Sounds") is perhaps the most remarkable among his collection of poems. All the features of ,Navodaya, poetry like patriotism, the reformatory zeal, critical attitude, Indian culture, consolidation of traditional strength, mystical faith and assertion of a poet's individuality can be found in this collection of poems. Bendre used diverse techniques for spiritual lyrics, classical style for sonnets, and traditional as well as colloquial idioms for pastoral and folk lyrics. Symbolism is characteristic of his poetry. His poem ,Patargitti, (Butterfly) which is sung as a nursery rhyme is about the colors of temptation. ,Mudalmaneya, ("Dawn") is symbolic of all pervading peace or, the poet's yearning for it. In the ,Kuniyonu bara, ('Let us Dance") all diverse currents of thought meet in on great confluence. Apparently, all of Bendre's poems could be set to music and abound in alliteration; but there was always a hidden layer of meaning which only a trained poetic mind could decipher.

Why did you choose to buy a motorcycle instead of a scooter? Or vice versa? Did you buy one and later switch to the other? Why?

Answering this excites me! Slightly lengthy but I have tried my best to squeeze almost 4 decades of my experience in a single answer. Back in 1986 Kinetic Engineering had launched the Kinetic Honda Scooter (KH) & it's booking was open for a sum of Rs 500, ,only. I was just about 19 then & after finishing apprenticeship in TELCO(Tata Motors now) had joined my first job at a Tool Room in Pune. Although my salary was Rs 925 yet I had saved almost Rs 2500 from my apprenticeship stipend. After insistence by my Dad, I paid Rs 500 & booked the KH even though my personal desire was to own the Yamaha RX-100. December 19, 1986 to our surprise & just 5 months into the booking, we received a letter explaining that our KH is delivered to the dealer & on payment of Rs 14,250 more we can take delivery of the same. I cleaned up all my savings & my Dad chipped in with the balance. Voila.. ,The Kinetic Honda DX 100 was all of ours! The noiseless engine + the smooth ride was just like a knife slicing through butter. Over the next year, I covered almost 30k Km visiting nearby places at every available opportunity, my friends joined intermittently on their bikes, in particularly the Yamaha RX 100 which used to be the only sore point during the journey. I missed a motorcycle badly. Then in 1988-89 the opportunity arrived when a friend of mine invited me & two other friends to his native in Bhusawal for Diwali vacations, the plan seemed hectic as it was only for 3 days but the icing was, riding all the way & return on an Yezdi 250 and an RX 100. Accepted immediately! We did nonstop Pune to Bhusawal approx 400kms, on an patchy 2 lane highway, starting at 5am & reaching at 6:30pm with a halt of 1-2 Hrs to watch the magnificence of the Ajantha Temples near Aurangabad. 1991:, My KH DX100 had already covered more than 85k on the odometer & so I was mulling on going in for a motorcycle, obviously my shortlist had only & only the Yamaha RX 100 until one fine day a batch mate of mine landed at our house with this… The Honda CB 125 TE The ,Vroom vroom ,of it's twin cylinder engine had me all goosebumps… the shortlist went into the bin & then began our search for another such bike for me. These bikes were individually imported units & then Pune had a lot of them. I soon landed with Gujarat registered bike with No GAR-XXX for Rs 15k. Having sold my KH for 12k & my salary being Rs 3.2k (now in Bajaj Auto Ltd) this was an excellent deal. Sent the bike for Refurbishing but as it was taking to much time so, ,my intelligent yet very lazy mechanic friend gave me an alternate bike, ,to use until he was done with the job.. Enter the “Honda MTX 50” This puny bike was loads of fun. A 50cc liquid cooled engine with a six speed gearbox & an prolink suspension… Wow! I recently had changed my job & unlike the earlier, our staff bus was very rickety so riding to work was more motivational than means to reach the destination but after a month this happiness was to end again. My mechanic had a customer for this bike (the bike had an WB registration so he was desperate to sell it off quickly) & so asked me to spare it just for a day. I agreed but his customer ended up seizing the bikes engine by overloading it too much. Sad face me, sad face he.. ,But then as they say “Every dark cloud has an silver lining”, he offered me this.. Honda CB 400 Twin Reason: ,A client of his had gone overseas & had kept this bike with him until the time he returns. Again ,Goosebumps galore ,for me. At around 45+ BHP it was a fearsomely fast bike that too on the traffic filled narrow roads of Pune. ,I enjoyed being in limelight, for some time but this gas guzzler was not for the daily chores & so most of the time it remained in my parking lot, actually for almost 8 months. Arrival of the CB 125 TE: ,A, ,month & half after the CB 400 came, my CB 125 was ready & one day the mechanic called & asked me to collect it that evening. Almost 5-6 months since I had handed him the bike in 1991, the day finally arrived in 1992. I reached his garage at 7:30pm & drove out with the bike at 8pm, it was another ,“Wow”, ,moment just listening to the twin exhausts ,& as I parked the bike in my apartment's parking there were a lot of eyes peeping through the windows, must be thinking “has this kid gone mad or what”. My Dad was never into automobiles & cylinder meant only a domestic gas cylinder to him so me proudly blabbering ,how, ,great was the twin cylinder feel & sound, always fell on deaf ears yet ,I used to be a focus of attention on the roads, everywhere people used to ask me, ,about the bike, & obviously कितना देती है (what's it's fuel consumption) also. Unfortunately the bikes fuel consumption was a miserly 25/ltr which soon became a pain in the a**se for me. 1st April 1992: ,I completed my part time MBA (Marketing) & so quit my job as an Machine Tools Service Engineer to start my own business of Marketing of Electronic Rolling Displays. This job required a lot of travel on an daily basis & there were no immediate returns so at 25Km/ltr the CB started burning a hole in my pocket & savings. My Dad realised this first & asked me to buy a more frugal bike for better financial sustainability. 1993 enters the “Hero Honda CD 100” Compared to the Honda CB 125 TE this was pure bliss on the fuel consumption front & with 70Km/ltr we surpassed the Pune boundaries & spread our business to nearby cities like Mumbai & Aurangabad. The HH CD 100 was more economical than the already economical “Red” MSRTC buses & used to save time also. Since 1996, the Honda CB 125 TE was sent into an unforced hibernation.. 2001: ,A youth in his mid 20's approached me for the CB 125 & we finalised the deal at Rs 15k & I had to unfortunately let go the bike which carried so many youthful memories of mine. 2003: ,I was 36 & already had my own family with a 5 year old kid + the CD 100 was getting worn out because of age & I had clocked more than 165k on it so me & wife decide to do away with the bike & go in for an family Scooter. June 2003: ,The recently launched Honda Dio joined our family, again the butter smooth engine & transmission reminding me of my first KH purchase of 1986. Incidentally my younger kid was also born in 2003. The next purchase took time & happened almost 12 years later in 2015. The Yamaha Ray Z I sorely missed motorcycling & the happy years which I had spent with them but with kids growing & demands personal /business increasing, I decided to lay low focusing on my fitness instead. 2019: ,Although now I am 51 but my elder kid has completed his formal education & will be joining my business as soon as he finishes his internship. My motorcycling plans are already drawn & the motorcycle joining me as soon as next month is.. The Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 After some run-in & acclimatization, in November 2019 I plan to kickstart my motorcycling adventures by first doing a solo South India. Let's see what destiny has in hand! Thanks for reading. Regards! All photo source: Google. Bhusawal trip photo: My friend, ,Nagraj Karanth

Who are the top most current (living) inspiring Kannadigas?

1. HH Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji Sri Vishwesha Teertha was born in 1931 at Ramakunja to a Shivalli Tulu Brahmin family and his pre-Sanyasa name was Venkataramana Bhat. Prakash Padukone's life story has been chronicled in the biography 'Touch Play', by Dev S. Sukumar. The book is only the second biography of any badminton player. 3. N R Narayana Murthy People have mentioned Sudha Murthy but nobody mentioned NRN. He started Infosys along with six others, with an initial capital of ₹20,000 provided by Sudha Murthy. The rest is history. Infosys is now one of the most successful IT companies in the world and provides employment of lakhs of engineering graduates every year. One of the most crucial decisions taken by Infosys was instrumental in the making of Bengaluru as the IT capital of India. Yes, I'm talking about them shifting their headquarters from Pune to Bengaluru in 1983, which was like the foundation stone for the making of Silicon Valley of India. 4. Upendra Upendra or Uppi, as he is affectionately called has been one of the shining lights of Kannada film industry for a long time now. He started his career as an assistant director to Kashinath. His first movie as a director was Tharle Nan Maga, which was also Jaggesh's first movie as the lead actor. His debut as an actor was A, which has to be one of the most unique films ever! Uppi is all in one! A writer, director, actor, singer, producer, he is Jack of all trades! 5. Ranganath At a time when most of mainstream India media is occupied by presstitutes, here is one an exception. he is Mr Ranganath of Public TV. He is unbiased in his approach and if you see him on air, he'll be dressed in simple clothes, like a common man unlike others, who are dressed in suit and boot. Moreover, Kannada news channels have that disgusting nature of promoting other language movies over Kannada movies. When RangiTaranga and Bahubali were in theaters, all Kannada channels were shamelessly showing Bahubali promos but Public TV actually called Anup and Nirup Bhandari on air and were the first Kannada channel to do so. 6.
