Think the '80s & '90s 1.6L European ford 4 cylinder CVH engine was a hemi (H of the name being for Hemispherical head design). Would you buy a car made by Ford?
The quick answer would be “Yes” I have owned several over the years as well as many other makes. The most memorable and the best in terms of “ enjoyment per £” , was my first car . A 1937 Ford model 7W Ford 10 (1172 cc side-valve) .I was thirteen. It cost me a good few weeks to save up my pocket money to pay the £5 to get it.It spent the rest if its life careering around a field as my friends and I learnt to drive, to control skids in mud and dig it out ocassionally and I learnt the basics of car repairing. After getting a driving licence , I had a 1958 Ford 100e Prefect which my older brother gave me. A rather slow 1172 side-valve again but after a few “alterations” (a Cortina engine and gear box )it quite became quite nippy. I had a 105e Anglia, a Fiesta MkI, a Mk3 Escort 1600 at various times.The quality took a steady dive in the seventies in terms of a depressing abilty to rust and I steered away from Fords for years and instead had Opel, Citroen, Peugeot, Volkswagen ,several different varieties of Land-rovers and no particular issues with any of them. My mother had two Mk 2 Fiestas which were dreary,awful rot boxes but then in her mid eighties she decided to buy a Ford Ka which she loved - I was surprised how well it handled - better than many so called sport cars I had driven. My wife bought a Ford C Max 2 litre tdci in 2011 -Superbly put together , comfortable, torquey performer and has proved to be utterly reliable.We have kept it a long time- it just keeps going. I have driven new Fiestas and Focuses (as hire cars) and I would say they handled better and seemed as well ,if not better ,put together than a brand new BMW 1 series that I hired for a week recently. What the the blue oval badge lacks in snob appeal it more than compensates in other areas.
Can we use front wheel drive engine such as Honda B16 series to run a rear wheel drive car?
yes. quite easily. here in the UK we have the Aerial Atom, a little lightweight 2 seater powered by the engine from a Honda (civic type R from memory) which has the engine/gearbox mounted behind the deats, rear wheel drive, with a specialist gear linkage to get it all to work. if you are considering mating it to a conventional rear drive layout, then as long as the transmission physically fits to the engine, either directly or via an adaptor plate, then the engine wont know the difference. fabricating engine mounts and bell housing adaptors OR fabricating a gear linkage are the only real (potentially) difficult parts of such a conversion. again in the UK in our motoring history we had cars like the mk2 Ford Cortina and the mk1/2 Escort, which were rear wheel drive and powered by the 1.1/1.3 ohv ‘kent’ engine. this engine later found its way into mk3/4/5/6 Escorts (front wheel drive) pretty much ALL small engined Fiestas until the mid 2000s, the ford Ka (all of which are front wheel drive)

Very good question, I am not musical expert so I can’t judge a composition on its technical merit. I can only share my subjective opinion. Analysis of Spotify data suggests what we like in our teens sets out musical taste as adults, but I’ll come to that later. An absolutely stunning piece that captures the natural beauty of the world. 1993 ,I,ntro Music: Jungle Strike Shamelessly ripping off Top Gun this little piece of Midi magic was all that was needed to get any 12 year old completely overexcited. 1991 Ken’s Theme Street Fighter 2 A lot of fuss is made of the Guile Theme but I’ve always preferred this. 2001 Just a Day: Feeder Gran Turismo 3 Like like practically every British 18 year old in 2001 I listened to Feeder and wanted a PS2. To this day Feeder songs remind me of 3 things. Finishing my A Levels, buying my first car (a lovely K reg 1.1 Mk3 Ford Fiesta called Tallulah) and being blown away by the amazing graphics the first time I played my PS2. 1996 Hell March: Command and Conquer Red Alert In 1996 this was about as cool as it was possible to get. However 4 years later… 2000 Hell March 2: Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 Westwood Studios setting the standard for video game intros. However as far as I am concerned there is one video game theme that surpasses all others, The orchestral version is one of my all time favourite pieces of music. 1997 Main Theme: Final Fantasy VII If I get my way that will be the music at the start of my funeral. At the end I’m having this.. I first heard 6 of these 7 themes by the time I was 18. Either game music is getting worse (which I don’t think is the case) or you really are hardwired to have a long lasting love for the music of your youth.
Have you ever bought a vehicle at a car auction, where no one seemed to be interested in the vehicle, so you ended up getting it for an incredibly low price?
About 15 years ago, or thereabouts, I bought a mk3 Ford Fiesta for the grand sum of £12.50 from ebay. No, the price isn't a typo. The reason it was so cheap, was that it was a Category B write off with rear end damage. Cat B - Body shell should be crushed. Signifies extensive damage, although some parts are salvageable. Should never re-appear on road, although reclaimed parts can be used in other road-going vehicles. It made me roughly a couple hundred pounds in profit selling off working parts and then the shell to a local scrappy.
Why were so few cars front-wheel drive 40 years ago? Was the technology that difficult?
40 years ago was 1980. in 1980, here in the UK/Europe, front wheel drive was increasingly normal. 1980 saw the launch of the front wheel drive Ford Escort mk3, the Ford Fiesta was already around and had been for a few years, the Vauxhall Astra/Opel Kadett was also going FWD in 1980 and the Cavalier/Vectra following suit within a year. we had also had the Austin Mini (the REAL mini, not the BMW abomination, and NOT a Cooper as they dropped the Cooper at the factory for a number of years) since the late 50s/early 60s, the Austin Metro (used Mini engines and transmissions) and other cars from British Leyland (Austin, Morris, Rover and Triumph) were front wheel drive, like the Triumph Acclaim. in the models i have named we have probably covered 5 or 6 of the top 10 selling cars in the UK at the time, so outside of America, FWD wasnt uncommon at ALL.
Why did Renault have greater success with Le Car?
Greater success in what respect? Where? Le Car, or the Renault 5 as it was more commonly known, was one of the best selling Renault models of all time in the market sector and demographic it was aimed at. I owned and drove a Renault 5 TL 3 door as my first car for several years. With a 957cc engine and a whole 47bhp, it was certainly no speed demon, and it certainly had it’s idiosyncracies but as a ‘first car’ for a new driver, it was certainly hard to beat for running costs, economy, insurance and keeping on the road very cheaply. The Mk1 was very similar to the old Citroen 2CV in that it had the umbrella handle gearstick on the dashboard. The Mk2 facelift models had a proper floor-change gearstick which made it much more conventional and placed it firmly in the ‘first car’ options along with the original Austin Mini, Ford Fiesta Mk1 and other similar sub-1 litre budget cars. The later Mk3 (Graduate and Campus) models had better specifications and more performance but lost a lot of their character. My ideal classic car? A mid-engined Mk2 Renault 5 Turbo. Now that really is a French pocket-rocket!

In the UK, (England at least) : Ford focus ST (mkII is common) Ford fiesta (Normally 2000’s models ) Vauxhall Corsa VW Golf (older versions) VW POLO 9N (modified) VW POLO MK 2, 3 and 5 (4 mentioned obove aka 9n ^) VW Lupo Seat Arosa (rebadged Lupo) Vauxhall Astra pre 2009 (hatchback, saloon, coupe and van) Vauxhall Astra VXR (old and maybe new model) Vauxhall Vectra SRI Vauxhall Zafira mk 1 (GSI) and 2 (VXR) BMW E46: 320d and other non M models (sedan, estate, coupe and convertible) Mazda mx5 (early 2000’s and prior) Seat Ibiza FR mk3 and 4 Skoda Fabia VRS diesel or petrol Ford mondeo ST mk 3 Honda civic EP3 Type R (older, non-modified versions of the civic in general are harder to find and old Type R’s are rare and costly) Seat Leon ( I've heard people call it “the poor man's Golf”. Its still a nice car imo) Skoda Ocatvia VRS older shape Audi A3 (older models) And I'm sure there's plenty more. Notes: Vauxhall is a UK car brand. Yet vauxhall is essentially a rebaged opel, with roots from Germany.
