Review Q&A hyundai elantra wrap

What car or truck do you dislike working on the most?

I almost hate to answer this. A 1990 Isuzu Trooper , hands down was an irritant . I acquired this extremely solid, shining, but non-running SUV as $300 buck trade-in on a 1986 Ford F350 Diesel CrewCab Dually for about $4000 . Circa 2003 or so. I previously had a 1984 Trooper 4 cylinder , 4 speed model with A/C . It was wonderfully solid ,and it Handled Shockingly well ! It was so light ,it was very nimble, and got decent fuel mileage . I still love the offset rear door arrangement . Circumstances had me see it to a friend and coworker . In a mysterious crash enroute to work , he and another coworker friend crashed into a Utility Pole. Sliding sideways into the rear side of the passenger door. The Trooper wrapped around the pole. The driver owner,is mostly unharmed ,concussion . Guy on passenger side has broken arm , but is unconscious . He had some brain damage , but returned to work for another 4 years or so. The Trooper really showed it was crash designed. So when I got a newer 4 cylinder , Fuel Injected , 5-speed Trooper , I had great expectations for this to be an IMPROVED version of a relatively treasured vehicle of my own past experience . I could NOT have been more wrong . I had planned on keeping this car for YEARS . So I more or less “Restored” it . I totally rebuilt the engine . New clutch ,the transmission got new seals. ALL the brakes were restored like NEW . The interior only needed front carpets. Crazy things went wrong. Blower motor things ,which I just fixed by rewiring a new circuit replacing the factory set up. All the instruments didn't want to read near correctly. Something went wrong that I can't recall strangely . But removing the engine ,by itself required some innovations on my part to NOT DESTROY these very involved steel heater pipes at THE BACK of the engine. These were COVERING the engine to transmission bolts. To not destroy the factory firewall heat insulation or the very ornately bent factory heater pipes connecting the heater hoses , you have to access the bolt heads from underneath with U-joint Sockets . But there was no room to rotate a ratchet once an extension was put on a Ratchet. 5 feet further ,not disturbing the angle you could fine break and rotate the bolts ! 5 feet of extensions ! Luckily I had a 2 foot 3/8″ extension to START the chain. Final straw in the “early computer age “ cars. Another now “ Classic” problem . START car drive to work. START the car drive Home. All's fine right ? So , it's a new day you go to work. Driving Home after work . Stop any place . Come back 5 to 15 minutes later ,engine cranks just fine . Won't start . Curses….. now what ? Maybe you tow home ,Maybe tow truck . After the car is home , with tools diagnosis begins. The TROOPER STARTS RIGHT UP ! Shut off , it starts right up once again . It fails to start again after stopping enroute home after a stop. There are NO warning lights , no Trouble Codes , no service soon or stop engine lights . It starts right up in the morning. This ends up being caused by a coolant temperature sender. Not the cheap one that works the gauge of the instruments . This is is rather large . It is not cheap or real expensive ,but …..the electrical connector on it ,is very unique. It is also severely degraded from heat and heat cycling. You almost cannot even SEE this connector on the engine ,it was on a sensor UNDER the tubes of the intake manifold. It could NOT be accessed without ……removing the intake manifold. Big job with its long runners. However ,without taking all the right side body panels off. You couldn't get to the underside bolts . I NOW DO REMEMBER !!! :^©u Pulling the ENGINE UP , freed from the bottom exhaust connections ,and bellhousing bolts ,let me NOT remove the cylinder head . To avoid removing the inaccessible intake manifold bolts and the exhaust manifold bolts , remove the cylinder head bolts ,(and timing drive ) let you access the cursed sensor! But the now useless plastic connector for this sensor was not offered for sake by ANYONE ! So I made a long wiring harness ,with very common connectors ,and SOLDERED the connector prongs to the wire. But…….this made ROTATING the sensor to thread it INTO the cylinder head….more than tight . There just really wasn't room, without the head removed. But ,I made it all work . It now ran fine . But the final insult was this Truck got a LOUSY 15 mpg. Ate gas like it had a V8 not a modern 4 cylinder ! There were other maddening realities to working on this vehicle , things that made for speed on the “ Production Line” . But rendered things inaccessible afterwards . I think I cut a body panel to replace the gas tank sending unit. I forget what made that easier than removing the tank ,but it must have been. So when “ Cash for Clunkers “ became a reality in 2009 ? I got my $4500.00 trade in on my Hyundai Elantra Touring ,and that Wagon has been the most reliable Vehicle I've ever owned in my now 42 years of driving.

What does it mean when, as you walk into a car dealer, the salesman says "What's it going to take for you to drive out in a new car today"?

What does it mean when, as you walk into a car dealer, the salesman says "What's it going to take for you to drive out in a new car today"? Ignore the question and proceed with your plan. You did go in with a plan right? I am looking at a sedan with good mileage. I like the Hyundai Elantra. Let’s start there. Resist the sales person’s efforts to get you into his plan of attack. Resist anything that isn’t part of your plan. If you are focused on a sedan, refocus the sales person away from those trucks. If you are focused on a sub $25,000 vehicle, don’t let them show you $30,000 cars. If you are focused on four doors, stay away from coupes and sports cars. If you want a car with good mileage, don’t entertain those V8 engines. Resist upselling. If you don’t need that fabric and paint protection, don’t pay for it. If you don’t need or want the premium stereo with internet connectivity, don’t pay for it. If you don’t need fancy cast wheels don’t pay for them. Never let the salesman talk you into giving him a monthly payment you can afford. They can make a $50,000 truck fit into a $350 payment. Focus on the total cost of the vehicle and how it fits your budget. Don’t forget about how much insurance adds to the monthly payment. Don’t talk about a trade in until you have figured out what the new car is going to cost you. They like to play one off against the other until you are confused and don’t understand what you are paying for what. Financing is another place where they can confuse you. They like to wrap all of that up with the trade in and the negotiation for the new car price and your head ends up swimming with numbers that you forget where to put where. Have a plan and stick with it. Don’t be distracted with the shiny thing they put in front of you.

Is Hyundai’s maintenance wrap package worth it?

I have owned three Hyundai’s since 2006 each with the ten year warranty. I have paid nothing except gas and oil changes and a tire when I hit a curb on a roundabout. Never any problems with honoring warranty and getting parts. Actually only one major repair. The 2006 Sonata required a new air sensor module and it was replaced on warranty with a same day appointment. The 2014 Elantra, my son’s car, has had a temperature sensor replaced on warranty and now has 100,000 miles on it. My 2017 Sonata Limited has zero repairs after 31,000 miles. The security the ten year warranty gives you is great. And the five year bumper to bumper is better than anyone except a couple of German luxury cars. The Hyundai may have slightly inferior reliability ratings when compared to Toyota but even without considering the warranty, they have the lowest five year cost of ownership in the industry. Less than a third of a BMW’s cost. In fact which of the Asian brands is most reliable is always debatable but Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Hyundai and Mazda are always at the top of the reliability ratings along with Lexus a fancy Toyota.

Why do some people still refuse to buy US-made automobiles?

Spite plays a large role, Ford still takes too long to change the interiors of their cars. however The Focus, Fiesta and F-series trucks are best sellers and continue to be cars that handle great, the fiesta and focus especially are like go karts on the road. dodge makes trucks, thats as far as we’ll go there because much of their other ventures have been pretty poor lately, the rebadged Fiat tipo ( dodge dart) was a sales flop of a car mostly due to engine choices available that ruined it. The Challenger/charger are not very fuel efficient and lack the handling of other car makers. And Chevy let me tell you aobut General motors favorite pet. of the 3 freinds of mine who all purchased brand new Cruze’s this past month, do you want to know how many of them had to return the car due to a Alternator not working. not working straight off the factory. ALL three, all three cars had the same problem where the Alternator had apparently not been working since before the new cars where shipped to the dealer. a customer at my store had the same problem with a 2011 cruze, and my boss bought a used 2015 for his step dad and it’s entire battery was wrapped in some strange electrical harness that the dealership ( chevy on interstate 10 in houston) claimed that comes from the factory.) was according to a local mechanic, so complex and Fubar’d that he’d refuse to touch the car anymore for fear of ruining it. now im not saying im against U.S. car manufacturer, i have owned a few Ford’s in my life and all of them have been very good. but of the other car makes from the US it’s been nothing but constant misery. i have ended up settling in a hyundai elantra hatchback because it’s so much better then a Chevy cruze hatchback, and i couldn't afford a brand new focus or Golf. HOWEVER i would buy a U.S. manufacturer’s car before i buy a Toyota or Honda, i like some soul in my car thank you. i’d rather spin a mazda rx-8’s rotary engine at 14,000+rpm till it blows and have to pay for repairs then buy a POS camry or accord.

What is your review of Hyundai Elantra?

To start with, in my opinion, the front is inspired by the 2018 “Le Fil Rouge” concept. There's a ton to look at around this car. ,The headlight,s are integrated into the very interior of the imposing radiator grille, with the turn signals almost perfectly hidden there. The headlights stretch outward with an odd shape and typical model LED strips. With the Tech package, you get full LED lighting. At the bottom of the body, a rather curious and very angular smoked chrome applique disguises the nose. While the exterior may not be to everyone’s liking, the ,interior presentation, will please many. Hyundai surpasses itself, at least with the Ultimate version. As soon as I got on board, I couldn’t help but be impressed with a lot of the features. What caught my eye the most was the 3-color layout with beige wrapping around the driver and imitation denim accents in the doors. Hyundai has found a great formula for adjustable seats that offer good support and a lot of comfort. ,This resource, has more info.

What do you think is the finest car America has ever produced?

Q. What do you think is the finest car America has ever produced? A. My vote is for the corvette. Top 10 Greatest American Cars of All Time - Motor Trend 11 PHOTOS America may not have invented the automobile. That honor goes to German engineer Karl Benz and his Patent Motorwagen of 1886. But America quickly made the automobile its own. By 1904 the United States led the world in automobile sales and production, and by 1913 80 percent of all the cars made in the world were made right here. American automakers — there were 253 of them active in 1908 alone — were pioneering new technologies and new vehicles at an astonishing rate. So as we celebrate the Fourth of July, why not celebrate the 10 greatest American cars of all time? You can define greatness is many ways, but these are all automobiles that were hugely influential in terms of their technology, design, engineering, and their impact on society and popular culture. These are machines that changed our world. There are other cars that are perhaps equally deserving of inclusion on this list. So let the arguments begin. If you think we’ve missed an all-time great, let us know. Ford Model T 11 PHOTOS Henry ,Ford,‘s Model T was produced for 19 years, from 1908 to 1927, and almost 15 million were made, with prices falling from $825 to $260 by 1925 as ,Ford, refined the mass-production process. But the Model T was more than just a car. It put America on wheels and so changed the way Americans worked, the way they lived, and the way they played. Shopping malls, motels, planned suburbs with affordable housing, well-paid manufacturing jobs, and an emerging middle class eager to enjoy the perks of prosperity — this was modern, 20th-century America, and the Model T helped create it all. Ford Model 18 11 PHOTOS Launched in 1932, the ,Ford, Model 18 was the first mass-market car in the world with a V-8 engine, and created a paradigm for American cars that continues to this day. In the 1930s Ford V-8s were prized for their performance — gangster John Dillinger wrote to thank Henry Ford for building “as fast and sturdy a car as you did” — and after World War II they formed the backbone of the nascent hot rod movement, being cheap, plentiful, and easy to modify for extra performance. With ’32 Fords still regarded as the most desirable of all hot rods, this is a car that’s remained a pop-culture icon for more than 80 years. Duesenberg Model SJ 11 PHOTOS Also launched in 1932, the Duesenberg Model SJ was the antithesis of the cheap and cheerful Fords and Chevys most Americans drove through the depths of the Depression. The Duesenberg SJ was, simply, a hand-built, money-no-object supercar, the 1930s equivalent of a Bugatti Veyron. With their twin-cam, four valves per cylinder, supercharged straight-eight engines, Duesenberg SJs were said to be capable of 104 mph in second gear and 140 mph in top; in 1934 a lightweight roadster averaged 135 mph for 24 hours on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Just 36 SJs were built between 1932 and 1935. Gary Cooper and Clark Gable owned the only two short-wheelbase SSJ Duesenbergs ever built. Jeep, MB 11 PHOTOS “The ,Jeep,, the Dakota airplane, and the landing craft were the three tools that won the war,” claimed Dwight D. Eisenhower, Allied Supreme Commander during World War II. More than 700,000 Jeeps had been built by the war’s end, giving Allied troops overwhelming superiority of movement on the ground. Post-war, the tough, nimble, go-anywhere ,Jeep, enjoyed a second, more peaceful career as a recreational vehicle, establishing the nexus between capability, style, and functionality that still underpins 21st-century car buyers’ love affair with crossover vehicles. The Jeep is the car that saved democracy. And it was the seminal SUV. Oldsmobile “Rocket” 88 11 PHOTOS Rock ’n’ roll began with a song about a car: Elvis Presley was still driving a gravel truck when 19-year-old Ike Turner walked into a tiny studio owned by Sam Phillips in Memphis in 1951 and recorded “Rocket 88,” a paean to the fastest American sedan you could buy at the time, the ,Oldsmobile, 88 powered by the 135-hp Rocket V-8 engine. Launched in 1949, the Rocket-powered 88 was America’s first muscle car, proving almost unbeatable in stock car racing through 1951. The record “Rocket 88” was an unexpected hit, and the royalties enabled Phillips to start Sun Records, the label that gave musicians such as B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and, of course, Elvis their starts. Chevrolet Corvette 11 PHOTOS Making its debut in 1953, the Corvette is 10 years older than ,Porsche,‘s 911, and every bit as iconic. Like the Rolling Stones, the Corvette has had a patchy track record — the asthmatic 165-hp C3 of the mid-’70s is the equivalent of disco-era Mick and Keef phoning it in. But when it’s been good, the Corvette has been breathtaking. The beautiful Bill Mitchell-designed C2 Sting Rays, particularly the fuel-injected 327s with four-speed manual transmissions, were arguably better cars than contemporary E-type Jaguars, while today’s 650-hp Z06 is a true high-performance sports car with leading-edge technology and performance equaling that of rivals costing two or three times the price. Ford Mustang 11 PHOTOS The ,Ford Mustang, not only created a new automotive genre — the ponycar — but was also one of the first cars designed for a specific demographic. When Ford’s Lee Iacocca realized the first wave of baby boomers were coming of driving age, and that they would want to drive something very different from the big, soft land yachts their parents loved, product planner Hal Sperlich proposed wrapping mundane Falcon mechanicals in sporty sheetmetal. The Mustang proved an overnight sensation, with more than 1 million sold in the first 18 months of production. But performance that truly matched the style wasn’t really unlocked until the Shelby GT350 appeared in 1965, establishing the formula that has kept the Mustang alive for more than 50 years Top 10 Best Cars Ever Made (blogsp[ot.com) No9 - Ford Mustang The iconic ,Ford Mustang, is a car manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. It was initially based on the second generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact car. Introduced early on April 17, 1964, the 1965 Mustang was the automaker's most successful launch since the Model A.The Mustang created the "pony car" class of American automobile sports car-like coupes with long hoods and short rear decks and gave rise to competitors such as GM's Chevrolet Camaro, AMC's Javelin, and Chrysler's revamped Plymouth BarracudaIt also inspired coupés such as the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri, which were exported to the United States. The Mustang is Ford's third oldest nameplate in production and has undergone several transformations to its current fifth generation. Ford GT 11 PHOTOS Henry Ford II thought he had a deal. Nine months of negotiation were over, and on July 4, 1963, he was planning to be in Maranello, Italy, signing a $10 million deal with Enzo ,Ferrari, that would give Ford Motor Company a half share in the storied Italian sports car maker. A ,Ferrari,-Ford sports car was already being planned, with an Italian V-12 engine in an American chassis. But the deal never happened — Enzo ,Ferrari, pulled out at the last minute. An enraged Henry then authorized the development of the Ford GT40, with the express goal of humiliating Enzo’s blood-red racers in the Le Mans 24 Hour race. Which it did, convincingly, in 1966. Chrysler, Minivan 11 PHOTOS Others had toyed with the concept, notably ,VW,‘s Microbus of the ’60s and Lancia’s 1978 Megagamma, but it was Lee Iacocca and Hal Sperlich — the same team who’d made the Mustang happen at Ford 20 years earlier — who at ,Chrysler, in 1983 revealed the perfect combination of size, seating, and drivability that came to define a new segment-busting family vehicle, the minivan. Within a decade almost every mainstream automaker offered a minivan in the U.S., making traditional station wagons obsolete. The segment has declined in recent years, but the basic formula established by ,Chrysler, remains the definitive one: front drive, sliding side doors, and a highly flexible seating package for seven or eight passengers. Tesla Model S 11 PHOTOS The mere fact the ,Tesla Model S, exists at all is a testament to innovation and entrepreneurship, the very qualities that made the American automobile industry the largest, richest, and most powerful in the world. We’ve not yet become a nation of bankers or burger-flippers. America can still make things. Great things. But what marks the ,Tesla, Model S as one of the all-time great American cars is that it has single-handedly changed the tenor of the conversation about electric vehicles. The Model S made electric cars cool for auto enthusiasts. How? It’s good-looking and fast. In fact, with 0-60 mph taking just 3.2 seconds, it is the quickest American sedan ever built. BY ,ANGUS MACKENZIE The 7 Best American Cars Ever Built FLICKR/CHAD HORWEDEL With all the great vehicles to come from America over the years, picking the very, very ,best, is a somewhat arbitrary process. The Model T is arguably the single most important, bringing cars to the masses for the first time, while the ,F-150, has been America's workhorse for decades upon decades. With that in mind, here are seven of America's all-time classics -- and the very ,best, example of each. COURTESY OF FCA 1981-86 Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler How do you you choose the best Jeep when they're all so similar? That's easy: the Scrambler is the choice here because its longer wheelbase makes for a much more stable vehicle -- especially on the highway -- and the extra space in back makes it the perfect pickup hybrid we wish Jeep would build again. That, and it just looks so ridiculously cool. Need more proof? ,Ronald Reagan famously kept one, around at his ranch. FLICKR/SV1AMBO 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Early Cadillacs were ,known for their engineering and innovation,, while from the 1970s and into the 2000s, Cadillac was in somewhat of a rut before experiencing a rebirth in the past few years. With that in mind, the '57 Eldorado Brougham is almost inarguably peak Cadillac. Not only is it a gorgeous two-door hardtop that somehow looks refined and flamboyant at the same time, but it was state of the art. Self-leveling suspension, power windows, and even power seats with memory settings were beyond the realm of comprehension for most car owners in the '50s. Toss in unabashed luxury like a glove box cocktail kit (!), and you've got a Rolls-Royce-beating luxury car. AARON MILLER/THRILLIST 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 There are a million great Mustangs to choose from. The very earliest are clearly the most ,important, for the car-buying revolution they started, and modern Mustangs are clearly the fastest. The original Shelby GT350, though, is what turned the Mustang from a "secretary's car" into a desirable performance vehicle. The fact that you could rent them in GT350-H guise and go straight to the racetrack, win, and come home is unfathomable today -- and in fact, if you try that with one of the current GT350-Hs, Hertz is gonna be ,pissed,. Not only was the GT350 the fastest Mustang you could buy at the time, it created an entire new breed of performance car. COURTESY OF GM 2017 Camaro 1LE Like its eternal rival, picking the ,best, Camaro isn't all that easy. There's the COPO Camaro -- which is one of the ,most under-the-radar performance cars, ever built -- the original Z/28, and a host of variants in the past 50 years. I'm going with the current 1LE, but not simply because it's the quickest of the bunch. Its performance elevates the Camaro out of the domestic performance battle and straight into the international scene. It's very literally world-class, and that's kind of a big deal. FLICKR/SICNAG 1928-1937 Duesenberg Model J In the 1930s, a Duesenberg Model J could hit 60mph in around eight seconds, en route to a top speed of over 130. Some of ,today's, cars struggle to do that, over 80 years later. Then, think about the fact that it tended to cost around the same as today's cars -- in absolute terms. Considering the approximate price of a Model J was around $30,000, that's over $400,000 in today's dollars, but that doesn't even take into account how expensive it was. Ultimately, the car's technical prowess couldn't overcome the social stigma of driving such an obviously expensive car in the middle of the Great Depression, which is a shame. FLICKR/JEREMY GILLARD 1991 GMC Syclone Some people will see the above photo and wonder if I'm in need of medication for picking a 25-year-old small pickup truck. Others know what this is, and have already sat up in their seat. For the former, the Syclone is a 280hp, turbo V6-having sports ,truck,. It had all-wheel drive back when almost ,nothing, had all-wheel drive. ,Car and Driver, famously ran one in a drag race against a contemporary Ferrari -- and won. It wasn't the first sports truck, and it was nowhere near as famous as the Ford Lightning that was to follow, but for one year, it was an impressive piece of machinery. COURTESY OF BARRETT-JACKSON 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 The second-generation Corvette is where the car went from a lovely sporty cruiser to a truly important performance vehicle, and the 1963 "Split Window" coupe is legendary in its own right. But in 1967, there were three little digits on the order sheet that truly set this car apart: L88. GM didn't want you to tick the box next to them, since that meant giving you a monster 427cid engine that really was never meant for the street. "Officially" rated at 430hp to discourage people from buying it, most estimates have the actual output closer to 550hp. Simply put, it's a car that's still fast by today's standards, and since only 20 were made, it's kinda valuable. The car you're looking at here ,sold for $3.85 million at Barrett-Jackson, in 2014. Photo: Fiat Chrysler Automobile These Are the Best Cars Made in the USA – and They're Not Necessarily From American Brands When you’re shopping for a new car, don’t assume that all vehicles from import brands fully originate overseas. In fact, that’s rarely the case. Many auto manufacturers from outside of the United States have made significant investments in design centers and manufacturing factories in the U.S. These facilities create American jobs and demonstrate a commitment to our country. Likewise, some vehicles from domestic brands are designed and built outside the country. If it’s important that your next new car is American, it might be time to put those outdated notions aside. The following list can provide a starting point for your search. Here are the best vehicles currently assembled in the United States, according to their scores in our rankings. Photo: Tesla, Inc. 2017 Tesla Model S The ,Tesla Model S, is a groundbreaking, fully electric, performance-oriented, upscale sedan that easily tops our rankings for ,luxury large cars,. The Model S is thoroughly American, although it’s one of the few vehicles on our list (from an American or import manufacturer) that isn’t produced in the Midwest or the South. It’s been said that Tesla, based in Silicon Valley, is more like a tech company than a car company, though its vehicles are built in a former Toyota/GM partnership facility in Fremont, California. About half of the parts in a Model S are sourced from the United States and Canada. The ,Tesla Model X, midsize SUV, another standout in its class, is also built in California. Photo: General Motors 2017 Chevrolet Corvette The ,Chevrolet Corvette ,sits high in our ,luxury sports car rankings, and enjoys a much higher ranking than the next-best domestic model. American and Canadian parts make up 64 percent of the vehicle. Chevy builds the Corvette at the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly in Kentucky, making this iconic sports car as American as fried chicken. If you happen to be in Bowling Green, be sure to check out the Corvette Museum. Photo: Ford Motor Company 2017 Ford F-150 The ,Ford F-150, holds the top spot in our ,full size pickup truck rankings,, thanks to its class-leading safety scores, performance, and technology. The F-150 is also a favorite among truck reviewers and truck buyers – particularly those who prefer their American trucks to come from American production facilities. Domestic parts make up 70 percent of the truck. As of the 2015 model year, F-150 models come from one of two Ford facilities: the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri or the Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan. Together, these plants produce over 700,000 trucks a year. Photo: American Honda Motor Co., Inc. 2017 Honda CR-V The ,Honda CR-V, is a popular, top-ranked ,compact SUV,. It has strong ratings from critics and high favorability among consumers, thanks to its competitive price, spacious interior, and great fuel economy. The CR-V, which has been redesigned for 2017, is assembled in Marysville, Ohio, alongside ,compact, and ,midsize cars, from Honda and the company’s premium Acura brand. Honda was among the first import manufacturers to invest heavily in American manufacturing facilities; the Marysville plant completed its first vehicle in November 1982. Vehicles built in U.S. facilities are shipped around the world. The CR-V features 70 or 75 percent domestic parts, depending on how it’s equipped. Photo: Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. 2017 Toyota Camry Given the volume at which Toyota sells the ,Camry, year after year – and its status as America’s best-selling car – it seems logical that it is built within the country. This value-laden ,midsize sedan, is built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Kentucky with 75 percent domestic parts. This plant, which builds Lexus vehicles as well, is the largest Toyota production facility in the world. Photo: BMW of North America, LLC 2017 BMW X5 The ,BMW X5, is a solid choice for a ,midsize luxury SUV,, made even better by the fact that it’s built stateside. The German auto manufacturer maintains a production facility near Spartanburg, South Carolina, that exclusively produces the brand’s SUV lineup, including the ,X3,, ,X4,, and ,X6,. Most X5 models use 35 percent domestic parts. BMW vehicles assembled in Spartanburg are shipped all over the world – even across the pond to SUV drivers in Deutschland. Photo: American Honda Motor Co., Inc. 2017 Honda Accord The ,Honda Accord, was the first car built at Honda’s Marysville Auto Plant back in late 1982, and it’s still going strong more than 30 years later. The 2017 Accord sits near the top of our midsize car rankings, thanks to its high overall value. The affordable Accord has a great reputation for safety and reliability, offers passengers a comfortable ride, and is well-liked by reviewers. It’s good at almost everything. Buyers can find the American-built 2017 Honda Accord in their choice of a coupe or a sedan. Its domestic parts content is 70 percent. Photo: Hyundai Motor America 2017 Hyundai Sonata If you’re looking for an affordable and reliable midsize sedan, the ,2017 Hyundai Sonata, is one of your best bets. It has the added benefit of being built in the United States with 46 percent domestic parts. The Sonata and the compact ,Elantra, (also a high-ranking vehicle in its class) are built at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. Hyundai opened this Montgomery facility in the spring of 2005. It now completes around 300,000 cars per year. Photo: General Motors 2017 Chevrolet Camaro The ,2017 Chevrolet Camaro, is a product of GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly facility, alongside the ,Cadillac CTS,. This Michigan-made sports coupe (which is also available as a convertible) has a wide appeal and a low price. The entry model starts at under $26,000, and numerous trim levels and performance packages make it a strong competitor in the pony car wars. Critics say it has a surprisingly comfortable and high-quality interior. It also boasts 54 percent domestic parts. The 2017 model year marks the Camaro’s 50th anniversary. Photo: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles 2017 Ram 1500 Next up is the ,Ram 1500,, which ranks high in our ,full size pickup category,. The Ram 1500 is known for being one of the more comfortable trucks on the market, according to critics, who say the smooth ride and high-quality cabin are standout features in this class. That’s true regardless of the Ram’s origins; much of these trucks come from Fiat Chrysler’s Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Michigan, but some are produced in a Fiat Chrysler plant in Saltillo, Mexico. The Ram 1500 has 56 percent domestic parts. Photo: Cadillac 2017 Cadillac CTS The ,Cadillac CTS ,scores well thanks largely to critics’ reviews of its road manners. The CTS offers strong performance and high-end comfort. A strong engine lineup combines with sporty handling to give the CTS its edge, yet its driver and passengers are swaddled in supportive seating and high-quality upholstery to complement a smooth ride. The 2017 Cadillac CTS comes from General Motors’ Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan, where it’s built alongside the ,Cadillac ATS, and the ,Chevy Camaro, in one of the company’s newest and most advanced facilities. The CTS contains 54 percent domestic parts. THE CITIZEN'S GUIDE TO THE FUTURE MAY 10 2013 12:22 PM Why the Tesla Model S Is Not the Best Car Ever Made—Yet The Tesla Model S is introduced at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 15. ,Photo by Stan Honda/AFP/Getty Images The Tesla Model S is ,Motor Trend’s Car of the Year,. It’s ,Automobile’s Automobile of the Year,. And this week, ,Consumer Reports rated it 99 out of 100,—tied for the best score the magazine has ever given. WILL OREMUS Will Oremus is ,Slate,’s senior technology writer. Email him at ,will.oremus@slate.com, or follow him on ,Twitter,. Lest you think the reviewers are giving the car a break for being electric, ,Consumer Reports,’ head of auto testing told CNN it was actually the opposite: “If it could recharge in any gas station in three minutes, ,this car would score about 110,,” he said, adding that its performance was “off the charts.” The Model S got top marks for, among other things, acceleration, braking, ride quality, and pinpoint handling. In its official review, the normally restrained magazine enthused, “It’s what Marty McFly might have brought back in place of his DeLorean in ,Back to the Future,.” I was equally blown away in ,my own brief test drive,. Others have been so impressed that they’ve reached outside the auto industry for reference points—my colleague Farhad Manjoo today ,compares Tesla to Apple and Google,. All of which raises a question that sounds hyperbolic, but really is not: Is the Tesla Model S the best car ever made? In a blog post accompanying its review, ,Consumer Report, ,took a stab at an answer,: So is the Tesla Model S the best car ever? We wrestled with that question long and hard. It comes close. And if your needs are confined to the Tesla's driving range, it just may be. But for many people, the very thing that makes cars great is the ability to jump in and drive wherever you want on the map at a moment's notice. And on that measure the Tesla has its limitations. Fair enough. But I have a shorter answer, and that is: not yet. Easily overlooked in the excitement over ,Consumer Reports,’ review is the fact that the magazine hasn’t actually given the car its iconic stamp of approval—the little red check mark signifying a product that’s “recommended.” That’s because, no matter how it performs on the track, a car can’t earn that distinction until the magazine has ,enough data to judge its reliability,. The Model S is too new to be eligible. Automotive history is littered with cars that dazzled at the outset but fizzled due to maintenance problems. So far, there’s no indication that will happen to the Model S. But until we know for sure that the car holds up over time, let’s hold off on the “best-ever” superlatives and just enjoy the ride.
