Stop talking about cheaper products especially manufactured in China. We appreciate quality products made in Japan and other countries more than anything else. Life is too short. You don’t want to make your days ruined by broken this and broken that. The manufacturers grow and flourish due to their dedications to serve us the customers, and hence we should preserve their existence in return. Now I will tell you my personal experience. During my student days 40 years ago, I used to drive my Honda Cub C90 motorbike. It was marvelously easy to drive on the hilly city without ever breaking any part at all. I also had a Yamaha Enduro 125 CC motor trail which brought me everywhere I wanted to venture, without ever changing parts except for the platina. This old technology I tuned myself to always brought optimum firing in its spark plug. Later on my father had a 1980 Suzuki Jimny jeep. It was small and easy to maintain. It brought confidence for us to go everywhere we wanted to go. And guess what? After a few decades, that Honda Cub motorcycle and Suzuki Jimny are built again, this time with modern technologies. My grandson will definitely enjoy such products. You can say that quality legend is passed from generation to generation. And now I have a 1997 Suzuki Baleno sedan which I have been driving for close to 500,000 kilometers. I made the right decision not to change car as my basic transportation. Imported cars were expensive at that time, twice the price of that sold in the US. Now, I am looking for electric car.
Land Rover’s new Defender. Banking on sentiments and nostalgia on a similar level; both the Defender and Bronco target the millennials who were brought up with folklore and films in which the originals of these cars were action heros. Both are also equally far removed from the bare-bones efficiency of their forebears, which basically excludes the original (hardcore, adventure types) of customers. Bling it on, to the urban jungle. Now, if only they took the approach of the new Suzuki Jimny, they could have had it all! The aforementioned millennials, adventurous soccer moms AND their husbands, hunters, fishermen, Schwarzenegger, not to mention Indiana Jones and his cronies- and me- would ALL be on the waiting list for a new one of either. As it stands, I’m not too excited…
Interestingly BEVs are both extremely simple and extremely complex. If you want to make a BEV it is relatively easy just buy: A motor. A motor controller. A battery pack. A battery charger. A donor ICEV. Then you pull out the old ICE and related parts like the fuel tank and exhaust then fit the new bits. With the right resources it could be done in a day. Now if you are more hard core you could make any of the above 5 items from scratch. It is a lot more work but very doable. In my case I would like to convert my Suzuki Jimny from a 4x4x1 to a 4x4x4. For that I would need 4 custom motor controllers. I have made motor controllers before so I could do that. I think a lot of people who like making custom cars are going to have a lot of fun in future as the above parts become more commonly available, However if you are thinking of modifying an existing BEV it could be come a very difficult task. For a simple BEV like a Nissan Leaf it is probably doable but for a cutting edge one like a Tesla it would be difficult. The Tesla uses some complex and tricky things with their technology to achieve the long range and high performance from a modest size battery pack. By modest I mean in kWh, not physical size. Reworking any of the stuff in a Tesla will not be for the faint hearted.
You can have them. You just can’t drive them. :-) By the way — not in North America, but specifically in the USA (more on that below). US has safety and emissions regulations for motor vehicles, and any vehicle imported into the US for use on public roads must meet them. Laws are laws. However, you probably could arrange for a Niva or a Jimny to be imported into the US as a collectable or “parts” or something, and then perform the necessary customizations on it to make it conform to the USDOT regulations. Just verify beforehand that such customizations are even possible on your vehicle of choice. Just remember that, while such a car will be relatively simple, and certainly minimalistic — it will not be very affordable, what with the custom import and modifications. Plus it will be a nightmare getting spare parts for it and getting it serviced :-) The reason there isn’t much market for these cars in US is because there no demand. Nobody really wants a Niva or a Jimny when they can get a base stripped-down Wrangler that will be more comfortable and still more rugged and powerful, as an off-road vehicle. And, finally — you can just go to Canada. I believe they were importing Ladas and Nivas for a while, maybe even to this day. So there are places in North America where you can drive them. Don’t know about a Jimny, but an old Niva is perfect for northern terrain with a lot of snow. Goes anywhere, and you need about 5 tools and a pair of nylons do perform just about any repair in the field. It’s uncomfortable as hell, though.

The Answer is sometimes more than Msrp. 911 Porsche GT3's were selling for more than new for a long time. If you were a previous customer you might be lucky and get a phone call to offer you one from the factory. But if you wanted one quick people were paying a lot more. Its not just exotic cars. The New Suzuki Jimny is made in such small numbers, compared to demand. A one year old car could fetch almost list price. Sometimes being offered for more. On the other hand when Rover went bust. I was selling new rover 75's at less than half price. Some places just won't budge on price. Especially if they have a good product. You will find deals on Hondas but they won't be discounted as much as a Peugeot or Ford. Personally I find getting the right car more important than any discount.
First things first, the Suzuki Jimny would be arriving at our shores sometime during the second half of 2021. This means a lot to us as the Jimny was a classified volume seller for Suzuki in tough markets such as the USA and Europe. However, it will have some serious competition coming in the form of the Mahindra Thar, which was pretty much reborn in a modern avatar this year. Since the question asked is solely about the performance of the Jimny and Thar, I would like to point them out from their engines. Suzuki Jimny. Coming to the Jimny first, I reckon it will be coming here only with a petrol variant. This is given the fact that Maruti Suzuki are against the sale of diesel motors for the time being. Thus, this leads us to the option of a sole petrol motor which is seen on the Jimny in international markets. That is a 1.5 litre petrol motor which does make 101 BHP of power along with 142 Nm of torque. There is also talk of the Jimny sourcing its motor from the Vitara sold globally, which is a 2.0 litre motor making in excess of 180 BHP power. There is again a chance of the Jimny getting a launch with both these engines simontaneously, which would make it quite an exciting prospect here but for the time being, it remains yet to be disclosed. Mahindra Thar. Now coming to the Thar, it is offered with an option of a turbocharged petrol engine which is newly developed by the firm. This is the 2.0 litre mStallion Turbo which is available with 150 BHP of power and 300 Nm of torque. By the time of its launch, it received rave reviews from both automotive journals and enthusiasts alike and it currently remains the go to engine for the Thar. In fact, majority of customers who booked the Thar have chosen the Turbo petrol variant of the car, with no mid-size SUV currently offering one today. On first glance, the Thar remains an absolute value for money pick when pitted against cars from the same price point. So, it remains in the hands of Maruti Suzuki to try and match up to the value offered and hype created by the Thar with the Jimny. Verdict. As of now, this is the best possible way to compare the Thar and Jimny, with a clearer picture set to be presented in front of us during the second half of 2021. As for me, I think the Turbo seen on the Thar could prove just about superior as compared to the naturally aspirated motor as seen on the Jimny. But if Maruti Suzuki do eventually launch the Jimny with a 2.0 litre petrol motor, then the difference in power could give it a handsome advantage over the Thar. But of course, the performance of two cars is determined with criterias beyond the power it makes, but we need to wait for some time in order to get an eventual verdict. Thank you.
They work off technical information. For example. Look at any car today and it has the basic profile of an inverted banana. Why? Because aerodynamic research determined this to be the most efficient aero dynamic shape for a small wheeled vehicle. Mind you, having seen the latest Suzuki Jimny I think some designers have got a bit fed up at this. Practically I do no know at what speed this shape really starts to make a difference. I suspect it is around 50 mph and anyone driving a Jimny at 50 mph in the terrain it is design for will not be around for long. I customers want to use it as a pose rather than practical wagon at higher speeds then they have to pay the poor aerodynamics premium.
