What kind of vehicle should I buy? My car was totalled in an auto accident and I need advice.

Judging by your profile, you live in the US. That’s good, as I know the different typical cars in the US, Japan and Australia but nowhere else. You would need to provide your budget, what type of car you had before, and what type of car you need, to get a good answer. For general stuff: the cheapest new cars in the US which are also reliable are the: Toyota Corolla (my family had one for 10 years, and we gave it to my half sister who is still driving it) Toyota Yaris (drove one in Taiwan; like the Corolla, but smaller. The seats are not very good at adjusting) Honda Fit (very roomy for a small car) Nissan Versa (it’s a bit unusual in that it is front wheel drive, but this makes it good in snow imo; drove one as a rental last year) Ford Fiesta (pretty powerful engine for a small car) Subaru Impreza (only all wheel drive small car I know of) Some cars by Fiat and Suzuki are cheaper, but there are serious reliability concerns. If you need a bigger car, maybe pick an SUV. Some reliable cheap-ish ones that are fairly reliable I can think of: Toyota RAV4 Honda CR-V Subaru Forester (drove one for 5 years. Reliable but downsides below) Subaru Outback Jeep Wrangler Volkswagen Tiguan There are some that are giant monsters like the Chevy Suburban if you really need a huge car. They are more expensive though. Out of the cars so far, the downside to the Jeep Wrangler is that it gets terrible gas mileage. Subarus are all All Wheel Drive (AWD) instead of four wheel drive. This means that if you pop a tyre , and you need to swap it, they will probably need to change all four. This could be pricy (700$) if it happens (it only happened to me once in five years of driving a Subaru Forester though). If you live in a state with many pot holes though, perhaps go with a 2WD or 4WD instead. Hybrids, and the small cars on the first list, get good gas mileage, but the downside is you need to replace a more expensive battery like every 5 years. Some hybrids to perhaps consider: Toyota Prius (my mom had one and it was alright. I hated the acceleration though) Subaru XV Ford C-Max I would not recommend the Chevy Volt. There are horror stories abound of those things breaking down after 4 months. My cousin bought one and had lots of issues before she sold it. For vans, there are three popular ones I can think of: Toyota Sienna Honda Odyssey Kia Sedona (surprisingly actually reliable for a Kia; so reliable that car rental places are buying them up) For used cars, the list is basically the same as I only listed reliable cars. Some though like the Ford C-Max are so new you probably won’t find a used one yet.
