What are some good examples of creative transformation?

In one of the most creative examples of upcycling that we’ve seen in a while, designer Brent Walter has transformed an old Volkswagen Beetle into a whole new type of transport. Dubbed the ,Volkspod,, this pair of minibikes plays with the iconic curves of the VW Bug thanks to the inventive use of the fenders. Too cute for words, it’s delightful to see Walter zip around on these little scooters. The Volkspods are fitted with an oversized headlight that makes them look a bit like a cyclops on wheels. Wide handlebars and a Schwinn seat give a bicycle vibe, while the VW logo emblazoned on the front of each minibike ensures you’ll never forget their origins. The bikes have a 79cc engine and with their birch green and pastel blue paint jobs—the original colors of the VW Beetle—Walter reinforces their vintage vibe. This is just the latest in a line of VW Bugs that have been transformed into something new. From RV hybrids to an electric car by Volkswagen , vintage Beetles are often given an overhaul. Given their iconic status, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. From the time they began being produced in mass quantities at the end of World War II up until they went out of production in 2003, their bulbous design has been an inspiration.

Have any aircraft ever been powered by an auto engine?

Hello there, LOTS ! They tend be homebuilts, and air-cooled engines from cars of the mid-20th Century tend to be the largest and widest scale of application. [1] ,VW Air Cooled Engine aka VW Beetle Engine Among VW car-engine aircraft, the ,Cassutt Special, ,is interesting for being a very successful racing aircraft. [A racing legend running off a VW Beetle engine…] The other is the ,Denney Kitfox,, which today uses the aircraft-specific Rotax engine, but the early versions could make use of the VW flat-four. [Early Kitfoxes could use a VW Beetle engine] And the ,Vans RV-4 and RV-6, which began life using the VW Flat Four - they are very good looking aircraft imho. [There’s a VW Beetle in there !] Here is a short list - far from comprehensive. [ ,Volkswagen air-cooled engine - Wikipedia, ] Aerosport Quail Airdrome Bleriot Model XI Airdrome Dream Fantasy Twin Airdrome Fokker DR-1 Airdrome Fokker D-VI Airdrome Fokker D-VII Airdrome Fokker D-VIII Airdrome Nieuport 11 Airdrome Nieuport 24 Airdrome Taube AirLony Skylane Airmotive EOS 001 Akaflieg München Mü23 Saurier Altair Coelho AC-11 Alvarez Polliwagen Aurore MB 04 Souris Bullet Bensen B-8 BK Fliers BK-1 Bounsall Super Prospector Boyd G.B.1 Bradley Aerobat Cassutt Special Circa Reproductions Nieuport 11 Circa Reproductions Nieuport 17 Corby Starlet Denney Kitfox Druine Turbulent Evans VP-1 Volksplane Evans VP-2 Volksplane Falconar F9A Falconar F11 Sporty Fisher Avenger V Fisher Youngster Flaglor Sky Scooter Flitzer Z-21 Great Plains Easy Eagle Harmon Der Donnerschlag Harmon Mister America Hummel H5 Hummel Ultracruiser Plus JDT Hi-MAX JPM 01 Médoc Junqua Ibis Just Superstol Mignet Pou-du-Ciel Mini-Hawk Tiger-Hawk JDT V-MAX Kolb M3X Leger Pataplume 1 Light Miniature Aircraft LM-5 Milholland Legal Eagle – half VW and full Type 1 VW engines Mini Coupe Monnett Sonerai Nicollier Menestrel Parker Jeanie's Teenie Parrish Dart Pazmany PL-4A Plumb BGP-1 Pober Pixie Pottier P.40 Pottier P.130 Coccinelle Preceptor STOL King Preceptor Ultra Pup Preceptor Stinger QAC Quickie Q2 RagWing RW1 Ultra-Piet – half VW and full Type 1 VW engines RagWing RW7 Duster – half VW and full Type 1 VW engines Rand Robinson KR-1 Rand Robinson KR-2S Sisler SF-2A Cygnet Sonex Aircraft Onex Sonex Aircraft Sonex Southern Aeronautical Renegade Southern Aeronautical Scamp Stewart Headwind Stolp SA-500 Starlet Taiwan Dancer TD-3 Tipsy Nipper Taylor Monoplane Thatcher CX4 Vidor Champion V Viking Dragonfly Zenair CH 100 In order to be used in an aircraft, the engine would most often receive a crankshaft of a different steel, stronger than that used on a car - but not always - and a different type of carburetor - but again not always. Again, the engine may also receive a reduction gearbox to reduce rpm to the propeller, though many designs do not concern themselves with this. [2] ,Subaru Flat Four & Flat Six This type approximates the configuration of the VW Boxer, but is water cooled, and so is heavier, and requires a liquid cooling system with radiator. However, it is available as an injected engine of high fuel efficiency, as well as computer control. Like the VW Engine, it often receives a new crankshaft of higher strength steel for aircraft application - but not always. The same is true for a reduction gearbox. Subaru also make use of a flat-four descended Flat Six engine, of higher power, and this too on occasion makes into homebuilt designs. [ ,Subaru EA engine - Wikipedia, ] [,Subaru Car Engine Conversions for Homebuilt Aircraft,] Among homebuilts, the ,Zenair, is known for using the Subaru as its powerplant : [3] ,Honda L-15 This is the 1.3 and 1.5 engine used in the Honda Fit/Jazz, and has VTEC, EFI and computer control - with good power and reliability. [ ,Viking Honda L15 Series Engine Internals, ] Viking - who prepares these engines for use in aircraft - make use of it in their own ,Viking 130, (using the 1.3L Engine) : However, there will be homebuilders out there making use of the engine in their projects. [4] Other car engines. The ,Chevrolet Corvair, engine has been used in the 1950’s-1960’s as an aircraft powerplant, following the example of the VW engine in terms of configuration and materials. Its uses are more sporadic, as there are far fewer Corvairs made compared with the literally millions of VW Beetles. The powerful ,Nissan VG30, 3.0L V6 engine - as used in the 300ZX sportscar, : has been used - much modified it is true - but in essence very much the same - in the ,spectacular, and lovely ,Scaled Composites Pond Racer, , which remains - even now - as one of the loveliest aircraft I have ever seen. I’m more than a little in love with it after all these years. I wish it were a homebuilt, because I’d move heaven and earth to own one. [ ,A unique database on Burt Rutan and his projects!, ] [ ,Scaled Composites Pond Racer - Wikipedia, ] Many other types, even including American V8’s, have been used in aircraft, but power/weight has often counted ,against, their favour rather than for them. The ,GP5 Racer, makes use of a V8 engine derived of car engine technology, though heavily re-engineered for aircraft use, and makes use of reduction gearbox to make best use of its power. The ,Titan Aircraft, 75% scale replica ,T-51 Mustang, makes use of a V-8 as well. The ,Jaguar V-12, has been used by Clive DuCros in England to power his flying replica ,Spitfire Mk.1,, whose construction was much like that of the DeHavilland Mosquito, resulting a lighter aircraft than the original, and a powering a smaller diameter propeller via a reduction gearbox. However, in flight, the Jag engine has a higher pitch than the throatier roar of the original Merlin … So, there have been a wide spread use of car engines in aircraft, and there will always be new ideas and applications - in the future, we may see electric Tesla-engined aircraft ! My 2c worth, and kind regards.

What is your favorite car and why?

If I have a chance now to own any ,5 cars…………, Let's say I am a successful young entrepreneur…… Mazda Mx5 NA - I will keep it stock. I will use it as a weekend car and for road trips outside of the metro. This is my favorite and dream car since I was a child because my grandfather used to own a Mx5 NA and he sold it after 10 years of ownership. It also reminds of my grandfather hardwork. 2. Classic Volkswagen Beetle - I will restore it to its stock condition and do a little resto mod. I will use it as a show car and drive it outside the city occasionally. My love to Beetle started after watching Herbie and started having a a lot of Beetle car toys. 3. Classic Mini - I will do a resto mod and turn it to a occasionally track and show car . Mini is also my childhood favorite car. Mini is also known for in the history of racing and it is easy to mod and it has good support of aftermarket parts. Whenever I see a Mini when I was a child I got amazed until now especially I see a restored classic Mini. 4. Suzuki Jimny - I will do a little off road modification. This will be my everyday use car and occasionally a off road car because I love exploring and going to mountains. I am a living in a tropical country that experience a lot of rains and city that have a worse traffic, the Jimny will be useful because of its size and height. Another reason is the price, you can buy a new brand Jimny with a price of a brand new compact sedan and it is easy to repair because it has no fancy and unnecessary electronics and technology. 5. Any Vespa scooter - I became a fan of any Vespa models after seeing my uncle's Vespa. I became curious on its brand and started searching and knowing the facts of a Vespa. Vespa is well known for its good design, performance, reliability (depends on how you maintain and use it) and value. It is easy to use unlike big and sports bikes and at the same time you can be classy. I will use this as a every day use scooter because like what I said I am living in a city that has a worse traffic, and occasionally road trips outside the city,. As of now this is the cars I like to own in terms of value, design, timeliness, sentimental reasons, and etc. I like to own the mentioned cars just for the sake to fulfill one of my dream and goal in life to own those toys. There is no wrong in fulfilling our dream as long we are responsible and calculate the risk before we fulfill it.

Why did Paul McCartney fake his death?

This question has been answered, many times, but I’m going to give my opinion of the whole Paul Is Dead thing. It started when ,Abbey Road, was released in October, 1969. A student contacted a disc jockey in Detroit, Michigan with a list of “clues” that he had discovered on previous albums, which he compiled along with the “clues” on the ,Abbey Road, cover. But the rumors actually began a few years before when Paul had an accident on his scooter, scraped his face and chipped a tooth. This, combined with the car accident that took the life of Tara Browne, a London socialite and friend of the Beatles, added fuel to the rumors (more about this later). Supposedly, Paul’s death happened sometime in 1966. The clues were things like: Paul sitting in a packing case on the cover of, Yesterday and Today,. Supposedly that was to signify that Paul was in a coffin. On ,Sgt. Pepper,, there is a hand above his head. He has a patch on his uniform which says O.P.D. It was to mean “officially pronounced dead”, but in reality it means Ontario Police Department, which a police officer gave him when the Beatles played in Canada. Also. he has his back to the camera on the back of the cover. The flowers on the front that spell Beatles represent a grave, and Paul’s bass guitar is represented in a floral arrangement. And the lyrics “he blew his mind out in a car. He didn’t notice that the lights had changed” and “they’d seen his face before”, was supposedly a reference to Paul’s death in a car accident. Actually, John was referencing Tara Browne. There are other goofy “clues”too, but I don’t want to make this ,too, long. On ,Magical Mystery Tour,, Paul is supposedly in the walrus costume (really it’s John) and that is supposed to signify death. At the end of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, John supposedly is saying “I buried Paul”. He’s really saying “cranberry sauce”. Also, in “I Am The Walrus”, during the fade, you can hear “O, untimely death!”. Doesn’t matter that they were mixing a live radio broadcast of Shakespeare into the recording, which really had nothing to do with the song. The “Paul is dead” people thought it was a clue. Then there is the, White Album., This is where, I believe, the Beatles (especially John) began playing along. In the song ‘Glass Onion’, John sings “ here’s another clue for you all, the walrus was Paul”. Why else would John say “here’s another ,clue ,for you all”? He’s spoofing them! And in “Revolution 9”, during the fade out, you can clearly hear the crowd chanting “Paul’s not dead”. There are other “clues”, but this is going on too long. Finally, on ,Abbey Road,, they staged the cover photo as a joke. George is the grave digger, Paul is dressed as a corpse ready for burial, Ringo is the undertaker, and John is God. Paul is out of step with the others, and he’s barefoot (corpses are sometimes buried without shoes). And the license plate on the Volkswagen ,Beetle, says 28IF. But that’s where, I think, they were proving it was all a joke. Paul would actually have been 27. There are things on the back too, but I don’t think they were staged. Perhaps the crack in the word ‘Beatles’ signifies a fracture in the the group, but who knows. However, I ,do ,think they staged the front cover as a joke. So, I will not answer this question again. Paul did ,not ,fake his death, he is alive and well, and it was only conspiracy theorists that came up with this crap. And the Beatles themselves were having a little fun at their expense.

Why did the Tata Nano fail as a disruptive innovation?

In the end I believe it comes down to one thing - ,branding,., I've tried to jot down some of the few somewhat repetitive themes that I see under the broader scope of branding. I've included both my opinion on what I believe is wrong with the Nano campaign as well as thoughts on how they can potentially recover. Pride of ownership, - The Nano was essentially branded as the world's cheapest car. While this was presumed to be an exciting, disruptive idea the truth is that no one wants to own a car that is thought off as cheap. Very few people treat a car as just a machine that takes them from point A to point B. This is basically what the Nano has been reduced to. People want to brag about how awesome their car is and how it kicks their neighbor/friends car's butt. The Nano as currently marketed does not allow for that. A city like Mumbai in India has an extremely well connected public transport system. If people want to get from point A to point B this system serves them better than the Nano. Advertising campaign, - The advertisements that I have seen for the Nano have unfortunately come off as bland and catering again to the theme of affordability. I've heard personal anecdotes from friends in the advertising business in India about how the company has rejected adventurous campaign ideas in favor of safer, conventional options. There is nothing wrong with people wanting affordable cars that are advertised as such but this takes me back to my previous point of pride of ownership. Especially with cars people want to own something they can aspire for and be proud of. Case in point - I drive a smaller Chevy, I can afford a larger Honda but would ,love, a shiny new Boxster. The closer you can make the Honda or Chevy feel like the Boxster the more likely I am to buy it. Note that by 'feel' I do not mean how exactly it drives (though I would hope it drives well) but how the branding of the car makes me feel about it when I'm in it or around it. Even the audience that can only afford a Nano wants to be sold something better. They want to feel excited about it. Here is one sample advertisement of the Nano that shows a middle class family of 4 driving through the streets with the stress being on traditional family values. I'm too lazy for a complete translation but it's about how as the miles progress the family goes from fighting (i.e. the kids) to romance. Nothing too exciting. Here's another slightly different example - This one talks about how the guy laments that he missed out his girlfriend/wife's singing in the years he used to drive a scooter/road bike. Result - The focus on safety and relative comfort over the scooter. Nothing exciting or incredibly desirable. There probably is a small segment of the population that this appeals to but most small car owners are looking for campaigns that portray the car as something with style more in terms of the Volkswagen ads we see today or even the less popular Fiat 500. Competition, - You'll note that in the advertisements above there's always either a couple or family on scooters or road bikes alongside. Tata is essentially trying to convince people that the Nano is a safer, better option than these. The fact remains many owners of other road bikes consider their bikes a preferable option in terms of style and speed. I have Facebook friends who have albums showing off their road bikes (one popular example pictured below). While not anywhere near the Harleys we see in the US there is a lot of pride of ownership here that the Nano has been unable to match. These cost about $1000-$1500 and are hence reasonably close in terms of price point. These individuals could very easily switch but do not want to. The Nano should probably try to extend this perceived competition to the small car segment as well to avoid focusing heavily on the segment of users driving these two weelers. (Some notes on that below) Scooters are not considered a style symbol for the most part in India unlike the Vespas in the US but the Nano seems to have become the 'scooter of cars' in terns of branding thus negating the advantage they were trying to gain. When people do eventually feel the need to move away from a scooter many will probably try to go for the next best option beyond the Nano. (Note that this is an assumption without any official conversion numbers.) Inadequate dealer network,- Ratan Tata was quoted as saying "We never really got our act together...I don't think we were adequately ready with an advertising campaign or a dealer network" [1] The Nano did not have a large enough dealer network in the rural areas and smaller towns where the affordability branding was more likely to work. The lack of dealer networks meant they could not capitalize on the initial enthusiasm and interest. This coupled with the hiccups like cars catching on fire (probably more than just a hiccup) added to the overall problems. Is there still any hope for the Nano?, I think it is going to be difficult for the Nano to reinvent itself in India but a few inspired campaigns and changes may help. The advertisements definitely need become more adventurous so that a wider demographic can find the Nano desirable. A couple areas I think the Nano can focus on - I know of families that have considered or bought the Nano as a second or third car. These are families that own cars in line with a Civic, Passat or Camry and are looking for another car to tackle the problems or traffic and parking in large cities. They are not buying the Nano for the affordability but because they want another smaller, practical option. The Nano could use some additional frills to appeal to the youth. The Beetle advert below is a good example of this. I recognize that they are playing in two different leagues but a few such frills may go a long in way in associating the car with different demographics. If they manage to do some reinventing there is definitely hope for them especially in foreign markets. The truth is that the Nano continues to be an idea that has disruptive potential.
