If you had $3 billion to build an army, what equipment would you buy?

Ignoring the millions of possibilities of equipping individual soldiers (guns, mortars, gear, etc), I’m going to just concentrate on heavy weapons such as vehicles, artillery. I’m going to choose a relatively weak country that needs some ‘upgrades’. Like Lithuania. Warfare will be mostly land-based because of the nation’s geography, so no amphibious assets needed. I’m also going to negate ammunition, fuel, maintenance, and other ongoing costs. I bought a whopping 6114 vehicles, concentrating mostly on mobility for the infantry, a significant amount of artillery and land-based missiles, and a decent number of advanced tanks - key for fighting on the plains of Eastern Europe. Tanks: 120 Challenger 2 tanks - $1.0 billion ($8.3 mil each) Only 1 Challenger 2 tank has ever been destroyed in battle. One tank took ,70, RPG hits in Iraq without being destroyed. Chobham armor, depleted uranium penetrators. My spearhead units. Which automobile company produces strongest and safest cars in India?

The auto market in India is filled with a lot of options today. With the number of people moving on the roads increasing day by day, the sense of safety keeps steadily reducing. Unfortunately, in the Indian car market, the major emphasis is given on the price, cost to run, mileage, and performance while safety takes a backseat. The idea of a safe car is coming up, slowly but steadily. In a report from the transport ministry released in September last year, the stats showed as many as 17 people died in 55 road accidents per hour on an average in 2017, with more than 50 per cent of the victims from the 18-35 age group. The report also stated one major fact - the overall number of accidents declined by 4.1 per cent from last year, but fatalities went up by 3.2 per cent. With such stats, we can assume that buying a car with adequate safety features should be on top of the list. Now, almost every car that is being sold in India right now gets a safety rating from Global NCAP (National Car Assessment Program). Global NCAP is a UK based company which focuses on the promotion of public health and safety, and consumer safety in vehicles. NCAP results can be used as a datum point to evaluate the structural integrity of the vehicle, vehicular impact on passengers, and possible injuries or fatalities at the time of a collision. Recent NCAP tests have shown Indian car manufacturers to make safe cars to earn up to 4 stars, but for a pan-market basis in the automotive segment, the thought process of buying a safer car than a cheaper one is yet to develop. We believe the readers can think for themselves so here are the top safest cars you can buy in India right now. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza This is the latest addition. Maruti Suzuki's compact SUV, the Vitara Brezza scored an impressive 4-star rating in the latest series of crash tests conducted by the Global New Car Assessment Program. The results were made public on Thursday at the inaugural Global NCAP World Congress which is being held in Delhi. The variant of the Vitara Brezza which was tested came with standard dual-airbags, ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution, and ISOFIX anchorages. The car received 4-stars in Adult Occupant Protection whereas received two stars for Child Occupant Protection. According to the GNCAP report, the Adult Occupant Protection was good and robust. Also mentioned in the report is the Child Occupant Protection received two stars because of the forward facing position of the 18-month old dummy in the test, but a 3-year old dummy received good protection. The Vitara Brezza is powered by a 1.3-litre turbo diesel powerplant which churns out 89bhp and 200Nm of peak torque. The powerplant is mated to a 5-speed manual, or a 5-speed AMT or AGS, as called by Maruti Suzuki. Prices for the Brezza start at Rs 7.58 lakh, ex-showroom. Renault Duster This model from the French manufacturer started the trend of compact SUVs in the Indian market since its launch in 2012. The Renault Duster scored 3 stars in the NCAP tests. The model used is the one with a single driver airbag. The Duster went through a mid-life cycle update in 2016 and is among the dominant market leaders right now. The Duster is currently offered in diesel and petrol variants. The Duster is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel which is available in two states of tune - 84 bhp/20 0Nm and 108 bhp/240 Nm. The petrol variant is powered by a 1.6-litre engine which belts out 102 bhp and 145 Nm of torque. The lower power diesel model and petrol are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The higher power diesel variant is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The latest addition is the automated manual transmission (AMT) available with the 108 bhp diesel variant but without AWD. Prices for the Duster start at Rs 7.95 for the petrol, and Rs 8.95 lakh for the diesel variant, ex-showroom. Volkswagen Polo The Polo initially secured zero stars at the first test. However, in the second test, the hatchback recorded a 4-star rating. The German car maker quickly addressed these issues and now the car has got dual airbags, starting from the base Trend line model. The Polo sold in India is powered by a 999 cc, 4-cylinder petrol which churns out 75 bhp of power and 95 Nm of torque. There is also a diesel variant on offer which is powered by a 1.5-liter engine belting out 89 bhp and 230 Nm of torque. The power trains are mated to a 5-speed manual. Prices for the Polo start at Rs 5.53 lakh for petrol and Rs 7.04 lakh for the diesel variant, ex-showroom. Also, the Polo is sold in GT TSI and GT TSI Sport, which is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol and churns out 103 bhp and 175 Nm of torque. The power train is mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Toyota Etios Liva We are not new to the fact that Toyota makes one of the strongest cars in many markets across the globe. Remember when the Top Gear trio tried killing a Toyota Hilux pickup and failed. But we don't have the Hilux here. However, the Etios Liva is one of the cheapest cars to buy in India which also gets a 4-star safety rating. The Etios Liva gets dual airbags as standard. The Etios Liva can be bought in petrol and diesel variants. The petrol variant is powered by a 1.2-litre engine which churns out 79bhp of power and 104Nm of torque. The diesel variant is powered by a 1.4-litre engine which churns out 67bhp and 170Nm of torque. Both the powertrains are mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Prices for the Etios Liva start at Rs 5.48 lakh for petrol, and Rs 6.76 lakh for diesel, ex-showroom. Mahindra XUV500 When Mahindra launched the premium SUV back in 2011, one of the major highlights of the premium SUV was that it had a monocoque chassis. For readers who don't know what a monocoque chassis is - a single shell. For chassis made in a single molded shell, with no internal frame. Monocoque chassis are regarded as safer and more stronger considering the vehicle body is integral to the frame, as opposed to body-on-frame construction. The model tested (W11 AWD) received 4 stars in the ANCAP test which is the Australian variant of the NCAP tests. The model testes are the same one in the Indian market and get 6 airbags, and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) as standard. It also gets Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control, and Hill Descent Control. However, the W11 AWD model has priced at Rs 17.85 lakh, ex-showroom. However, the point to be noted here is the XUV500's structural integrity. The SUV scored 16 out of 16 points in the side-impact test which checks the structural integrity in case of side-collision. The XUV is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk 4-cylinder diesel which churns out 155bhp and 360Nm and can be availed in a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. The petrol variant is powered by a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder which produces 140bhp and 320Nm of torque and is mated to a 6-speed automatic. There is no manual option. Prices for the XUV500 start at Rs 12.39 lakh for the diesel variant and Rs 15.50 lakh, ex-showroom for the petrol variant. Hyundai Creta One of the successful models from the Korean manufacturer for the Indian market, the Hyundai Creta has taken the premium compact SUV market by storm. The car got a very commendable 4-star rating in the Latin NCAP tests. The vehicle tested was similar to the Indian variant, and featured two airbags. The Creta currently sold in the Indian market is similar to the one sold in Brazilian markets and is powered by a two engine option - petrol and diesel. The petrol variant gets a 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder engine churning out 123bhp and 151Nm of torque. The diesel variant gets 2 diesel options which include a 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre engine options which generate 89bhp and 126bhp and are mated to a six-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic option. Prices for the Creta start at Rs 9.43 lakh for the petrol, and Rs 9.99 lakh, ex-showroom for the diesel variant. Ford Aspire Ford recently came out with the facelifted compact sedan, the Figo Aspire. Priced at Rs 5.55 lakh, ex-showroom, the model secured a three-star rating in the Adult Occupant Protection criteria. The Ford Aspire facelift is powered by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder TiVCT petrol from the Dragon series churning out 96bhp powerplant which can be found on the current gen Freestyle. The Aspire also comes powered with the 123bhp, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TDCi diesel engine on offer. Transmission duties will be done by a 5-speed manual gearbox. Ford, however, did not bring the diesel-automatic combo to the Indian market at launch. The only automatic petrol combo can be availed in the Titanium trim and is priced at Rs 8.49 lakh, ex-showroom. The petrol AMT is powered by the 1.5-litre TiVCT engine and is mated to a 6-speed AMT unit. All variants get dual-airbags, ABS and EBD as standard. The Figo Aspire will face off against the recently launched Honda Amaze (Rs 5.81-9.11 lakh), segment leader Maruti Suzuki Dzire (Rs 5.60-9.45 lakh), Hyundai Xcent (Rs 5.61-8.61 lakh) and the VW Ameo (Rs 5.62-10.01 lakh)

Why are Toyota trucks so popular in Hawaii?

I can think of a couple of reasons.. The most popular is the Tacoma- which is the US equivalent of the Hilux in size (although it isn’t quite as sturdy as the Hilux- the Hillux and slightly larger Landcruiser are the most popular utes sold worldwide, US ‘trucks’ rarely sell well outside the US). When you compare the size of a Tacoma to a F250 or other popular ‘truck’, a couple of dozen of them would fill the entire island LOL… US trucks are MASSIVE in size and islands tend to be small… including roads and parking spaces… You wont find something like this in Hawaii Toyotas have a (well deserved) reputation for reliability and long life, one of the ads seen in Australia is for the ‘unbreakable Hilux’, which is a very well deserved reputation, and shared worldwide (except the US where they weren’t even available to buy)- one that Toyota even use in their ads Australian ad for the (then new) Hilux Probably the most extreme test of the ‘indestructible Hilux’ was the Top Gear test, (they actually use the exact year and model as my first ‘Lux- a ‘84 2.4D wellside ute- ‘written off’ in a crash, still in use today as a farm ute- that whole ‘unbreakable’ thing isn’t just a marketing ploy LOL) UK’s Top Gear TV show ‘kill the unbreakable Hilux’ test… and tried some more… and some more They failed… it still ran and drove…

What type of car do you drive and what does that say about you?

I drive perhaps one of the best drivers cars ever, a 1989 BMW 325I coupe with the five speed manual trans. The E30. This is my actual car. Though you are more likely to see this view. I have had it this long. I count sixteen years. Bought for $300 with a broken timing belt, bent valves, blown out suspension, bald tires, peeling clear coat, a smashed in quarter panel, and a salvage title. Oh, and a broken odometer reading 170,000 miles. What does this car say about me? That I enjoy driving for one thing, another is that I can see the value in keeping this car on the road. I've obviously done lot's of work on it, all myself except for the body work and spray. It says I probably don't use turn signals, but why would I? I have perfect visibility out all directions and am passing you so fast that you are blocks behind me before you notice. It says I drive fast. (At least it used to when I had a sticker in the back window that read “Drive it like you stole it”). That I know myself good enough to stay in a “fast slow” car. I mean, it has a great power to weight ratio, a free revving l6, and the manual box. It feels faster than it is and if I had a faster car I would be in jail. What is the difference between a Toyota 4Runner V6 and a V8 engine? Which one is the best?

The V8 toyota engine is from the UZ family, this is the gasoline powered V8 engine which the 4runner had in the 4th generation prior to the 5th gen using the V6 engine from the GR family. The 4runner in the 4th gen used the 2UZ-FE which was a 4.7 L; 284.6 cu in (4,663 cc) version. Unlike its other UZ counterparts, this version uses a cast iron block to increase durability, as it was designed for low-revving, high-torque pickup and SUV applications. Its bore and stroke is 94 mm × 84 mm (3.70 in × 3.31 in). Output varies by implementation, but one VVT-i variant produces 202 kW (271 hp; 275 PS) at 4800 rpm with 427 N⋅m (315 lb⋅ft) of torque at 3400 rpm. JDM versions produce 173 kW (232 hp; 235 PS) at 4800 rpm and 422 N⋅m (311 lb⋅ft) at 3600 rpm, while Australian models produce 170 kW (228 hp; 231 PS) at 4800 rpm and 410 N⋅m (302 lbf⋅ft) at 3600 rpm. Like the 1UZ-FE, it has aluminum DOHC cylinder heads, MFI fuel injection, 4 valves per cylinder with bucket tappets, one-piece cast camshafts, and a cast aluminum intake manifold. For 2010, it was replaced by the 1UR-FE or 3UR-FE, depending on the country. However, this engine was used in the 4runner from 2002 - 2004. From 2005 until 2009 the 4runner had the 2UZ-FE engine variation which had VVT-iand electronic throttle control added to it. The ,1GR-FE, is the 4.0 L (3,956 cc) version, designed for longitudinal mounting in RWD and 4WD pickup applications. It has a bore and a stroke of 94 mm × 95 mm (3.70 in × 3.74 in). Output is 236 hp (176 kW; 239 PS) at 5200 rpm with 266 lb⋅ft (361 N⋅m) of torque at 4000 rpm when tuned for 87 octane, and 240 hp (179 kW; 243 PS) at 5200 rpm with 278 lb⋅ft (377 N⋅m) at 3700 rpm when tuned for 91 octane. This engine features Toyota's VVT-i or variable valve timing system on the intake cam and a compression ratio of 10.0:1. Service weight, including fluids, is 166 kg (366 lb). An updated version of this engine features Dual VVT-i which increases output to 270 hp (201 kW; 274 PS) at 5600 rpm and 278 lb⋅ft (377 N⋅m) at 4400 rpm on 87 octane. Inside, the 1GR uses a “taper-squish" combustion chamber design with matching pistons to improve anti-knocking and engine performance, while also improving intake and fuel efficiency. Toyota adopted a siamese-type intake port, which reduces the surface area of the port walls and prevents fuel from adhering to such walls. This engine has special cast-iron cylinder liners cast into the block, which are a spiny type to improve adhesion between the liner and cylinder block. In the event of cylinder wall damage (scoring, deep protrusions, etc.), the entire cylinder block must be replaced. For increased block rigidity, the 1GR also receives a high temperature plastic insulator/protector, which fills the empty space between the outer portion of the cylinders and block material common to open deck engines. For increased cooling efficiency, the 1GR employs water passages between the bores of the engine. There are two such passages for each bank for a total of four. This reduces cylinder hot-spotting and keeps combustion chamber temperatures more uniform. A bolt-on TRD Supercharger Kit was available on the Tacoma and FJ Cruiser but has been discontinued by Toyota. The new 2015 Toyota HiLux receives a slightly different version of the single VVT-i engine, with the only change being a removal of an air intake baffle tank being replaced by a conventional air filter housing to intake pipe to surge tank style. The new intake pipe now contains resonators. Power output is unchanged. First generation 1GR-FE variants with single VVT-i features Toyota's Acoustic Control Induction System. This system consists of a bulkhead to divide the intake manifold into two sections, and an intake air control valve (in the bulkhead) to control its effective length. When the engine is operating at moderate revolutions and under high load, an actuator closes the intake air control valve to increase the effective length of the intake manifold. At other operating conditions, the intake air control valve opens up to reduce the effective length of the intake manifold. The VVT-i version was used in the 2002 - 2009 toyota 4runner meanwhile the dual VVT-i is used in the current generation 4runner since 2009 when the generation started. The reality is that both the 4.0 V6 and 4.7 V8 are great performing and reliable engines. The V6 is more fuel-efficient and requires slightly less maintenance while the V8 is smoother and offers better performance. You can’t go wrong with either – it all depends on how you use your 4runner. There are plenty of fans of both the 1GR V6 and the 2UZ V8 and most of them can’t be convinced that the other is just as good. The truth is that both engines can perform every task you would use an SUV for whether it’s off-roading, towing, or commuting. They’re both better at some things and worse at others. It might be hard for V6 owners to accept, but the V8 does in fact offer better performance numbers. There was a change to the SAE protocols for the way manufacturers measure the horsepower of their engines in 2004 and Toyota implemented it in 2006. This meant that while the engines still performed the same, both the V6 and V8 were rated at lower horsepower and torque in the later years. Both the 1GR-FE V6 and 2UZ-FE V8 are incredibly reliable engines. You really can’t go wrong with either and as long as you maintain them, they’ll easily last for 300,000+ miles. No engine is perfect though, and both of them do have a couple of issues that have been documented over the years. Maintenance Both the V6 and V8 engines require very little maintenance to keep them happy and healthy. It’s really just a matter of keeping the fluids clean and that’s it. The location of the oil filter on the V6 allows it to be reached easily without removing the skid plate unlike the V8 so it gets a bonus point there. The biggest difference between these engines is that the V6 has a timing chain while the V8 uses a belt. That timing belt needs to be replaced (typically along with the water pump while you’re in there) roughly every 100,000 miles. This is less of a big deal than people make it out to be – how often do you log 100,000 miles? Yes, it’s an added cost, but not one that you’ll need to deal with very often at all. Surprisingly, some people have chosen to gamble by not replacing the timing belt. Failures are rare and haven’t resulted in valve damage in both VVT-I and non-VVT-I models (despite them being considered “interference” engines). Of course, it’s recommended to stick with the proper service interval if you care about longevity. Towing As with any other typical use of an SUV, you can tow with both the V6 or the V8 just fine. Even with its lower 5,000 lb rating, the V6 4runners are on par with the other mid size SUVs that it competes with. The V8 4runners really shine when it comes to towing. With a 2,000 lb higher tow rating (7,000 lbs) they can certainly tow more, or more likely, tow the same load but much easier. That same torque curve that we saw in the graph above is what makes the biggest difference. All of that extra torque is delivered right in the RPM range that you’ll be at while accelerating with a heavy load. In order to do pull the same trailer in the same conditions, the V6 needs to work harder and at a higher RPM. The engine isn’t the only reason why the V8 4runners have a higher tow rating though. They also come equipped with a hitch that’s rated for more weight and a transmission cooler. The thing is though, if you tow 7,000 lbs regularly, even a V8 4runner might not be the best tool for the job. Power might not be an issue but they’re still a lighter weight SUV with a relatively short wheelbase – and because of that, a full size pickup like a Tundra will do a better job of controlling the load. Think of the 4runner’s towing ability as something you can use occasionally or rely on in a pinch, but for regular use you might want to reconsider a bigger truck. Rarity and future value Every generation of 4runner has offered a V6 engine. V8s however, can only be found in the 2003-2009 models. Out of 5 generations, the 4th Gen is the only one to have a V8 engine. And with the direction things seem to be heading in the auto industry, Toyota will never put a V8 engine in the 4runner ever again. This makes them very special. If the collector car market tells us anything, it’s that limited versions of popular vehicles will continue to stand out and be sought after. The V8 4runner is an unsuspecting little hot rod and because of that, has potential to be collectible in the future. We’re already seeing evidence of the V8 4runners becoming desirable. Take a look at the used market and there are very few listed for sale at any given time. The ones that you find often have a fairly high asking price. Is this a sign that the values have already bottomed out and will begin to climb in the future? We’ll just have to wait and see. Again, there’s nothing wrong with the V6 models. It’s just that they blend in with all the other 4runner generations as well as all the other platforms like the Tacoma and FJ Cruiser – they were popular and they all had a V6. While both require very little attention, the V6 takes the win here because of the timing belt replacement on the V8. AIP problems with the 2UZ V8 The air injection pump on the 2005+ V8s has been known to fail and can result in a very expensive fix if you take it to the dealership. There are cheap bypasses available that will disable the system to avoid any future problems from arising. In the event that the ECU goes into limp mode due to the flaps being stuck open, there are block off plates also available. Combining these with the bypass will trick the ECU into thinking everything is functioning normally. Cracked exhaust manifolds on the 2UZ V8 Perhaps one of the most common 4th gen 4runner problems is a cracked exhaust manifold. It happens to a lot of the v8s and creates an annoying (and embarrassing) ticking sound. The good news is that it rarely causes a big enough leak to trigger a Check Engine light or diagnostic trouble code. The engine will still run fine, it just makes a noise. Because of that, a cracked manifold shouldn’t really be considered a reliability issue as it won’t leave you stranded on the side of the road or cause a failure. Head gasket failure in the 2003-2004 model IGR V6 The V6 4runners are not completely immune to problems either. The most noteworthy is the head gasket failures in early model year 4th gens. From what I understand, these failures were due to a manufacturer defect in the gasket and were remedied by upgrading it in the 2005+ models. It wasn’t an issue with the design of the engine, just a weak part that needed to be improved. Aside from the above mentioned issues, both engines are rock solid. The fact that Toyota used these engines in other platforms for many years proves that they’re dependable. The 1GR V6 was used in the 4runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser, and Tundra. The 2UZ V8 was used in even more models – the 4runner, Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, and the Lexus GX 470 and LX 470. It’s interesting to note that Toyota only offered the V8 in the Lexus models. One could guess that this is because of its higher performance and/or smoother operation. It’s also worth mentioning that all of the famous “Million Mile Tundras” were equipped with the 4.7L V8 and not the 5.7L. There is speculation that the Japanese-built 4.7 in the 4runner and Lexus has stronger forged connecting rods than the American built 4.7 found in the Tundra and Sequoia. If that is indeed true, it’s really saying something if the “weaker” version of this engine is surviving 1 million miles in a pickup truck. In the end, you can’t go wrong with buying ,any, model of 4th Gen 4runner with ,any, options and ,any, engine. They’re all built really well and are both functional and reliable. Depending on your usage and priorities, you might find that one engine will suit you more than the other. It’s also worth noting that all of these comparisons are factoring in the 4runner being stock and unmodified. The V8 models will be able to handle the extra weight from bigger tires, armor, and accessories better than the V6 – and that should be considered if you have plans to build your future 4runner into a beast one day. If this comparison has taught us anything, it’s that the general statements about these engines in the 4th Gen 4runner are true: If you care about fuel efficiency and want the easiest option to maintain, get the V6. If you prefer the extra power and added character, the V8 is the way to go

Could you pull a modern Toyota pickup out of a river, underwater, drain the engine and cylinders and start it, as I did with a 1983?

Very very unlikely… Modern Hiluxes have computer controlled direct injection motors, unlike the bulletproof old 2.4d in the Top Gear video which had a mechanical fuel injection system Even tiny amounts of water in the fuel means injector cleaning or replacement (the V8 diesel landcruiser can cost upwards of $1500 if it gets dirty fuel!!!) The computer itself is ‘splash resistant’ not waterproof, so it wouldn’t likely survive the drowning the 84 (not 83) one got on the boatramp… Below is a 2.4, the pump has a little white ‘hand’ mouse pointer on it No electronics at all, only a single wire for electricity (to stop the engine when the key is switched off) Some earlier diesels literally need no electricity at all, they only need it for starting (if you cant roll/push start it down a hill or whatever) and they had a handle on the dash that you pulled to stop the motor- the ideal ‘end of the world/ EMF strike’ vehicles LOL
