Review Q&A lexus rx 270

Is a Lexus RX270 a reliable car?

It all starts with the Lexus RX 300, which conjured up the market segment. It’s replacement was badged the RX 350, and all subsequent models saw increasing RX numbers. To the best of my knowledge the RX 270 was never a vehicle. It’s an impossible question to answer. In the mid 2000’s the RX was powered by a 270 HP power plant, but that’s the closest we can get to RX and 270 living under the same roof. Lexus made the small luxury SUV a segment with the introduction of the RX. It was Japan 1997 when they unleashed the RX Harrier by surprise. There was nobody else in the Lux Cute-Ute game, the other teams didn’t even know they we’re playing. People could not get enough. Toyota sold 400,000 RX’s in their first 365 days in existence. My mother was one of them and has had many RX models through the years. I have a better than average understanding of the model runs.

Is BMW really a low-quality made car?

It is funny to recall that I never drove a BMW in my life, I did not like the name, or their looks in general. Then, one day, I found a good deal at Enterprise Car Rental and got an X5, the most basic model that one can get, for 1 week. Well, 1 month later I owned one with several options. It was that nice to drive that I could not resist. My wife agreed right away as well. On the low quality. Like others have said it already, and this question has already been answered at least 10–15 times in the last 2–3 months (ancient Roman writers used to say “Repetita iuvant”, i.e., repeating things is useful), one has to keep in mind a few things: The fact that German cars in general are way more fun to drive than Japanese ones, means that the engineering is aimed towards performance and is more complicated than engineering aimed at durability only. They tend to have less tolerance for misuse. For instance most Japanese cars (even Lexus) take lower grade fuel because they know that most people will try to save $2 at every gas stop and so they make engines that are less performant, but can take cheaper gasoline. Germans want high grade. They will work on lower grade, albeit not as well and the lesser efficiency will return lower mpg so that one may actually not save fuel overall, but the illusion to save $2–3 at each gas stop is a strong temptation for more than a few. Then the injectors get dirty and once you need to clean them, all your savings will fly away and then some. “BMWs will go a long way” is something that a Honda technician told me (my other car is a Honda); however, you will have to maintain them properly and that can get expensive. And one has to factor in the fact that many drivers are so bad that they could put out of use even a tank. There is a misconception when it comes to Japanese cars. While there is no denying that their durability is overall superior to German cars, statistically speaking, the gap has been shrinking to some extent. For instance, according to the JD Power and Associates quality reports, the gap between Lexus and BMW is actually not that huge as of the last couple of years. And Porsche, after years of less than excellent reliability was, as of the last ranking, giving Lexus some fight. And, actually, Honda plummeted in reliability in recent years. However, some people, quite a few indeed, confuse maintaining a Honda or Toyota with maintaining a Lexus. If one needs repairs on a Lexus, those are not cheap either. Maybe not as expensive as on BMWs but they are not as “cheap” as on a Honda or Toyota. Trust me: been there, done that, sadly: when a Lexus breaks down, owner feels the pinch in the wallet as well. To be fair to German cars, one should avoid the bogus comparisons that are often provided even in so-called industry magazines where cars in obviously different segments are compared because one brand does not have a true similar vehicle in size or luxury. Once I saw an “idiot magazine” comparing a Honda CR-V to a BMW X3, for instance. Obviously the X3 is way more expensive to upkeep than a Honda CR-V even when the CR-V has all options in there. Let’s think for a moment about Japanese cars and let’s concentrate on some popular SUV models. Lexus RX, I think that the most power is something like 275 hp and the torque is also pretty modest. Same with Acura and their RDX and MDX models, the best you can hope for is around 270 and, I believe, 300 hp, respectively. As a matter of fact, and contrary to the trend, Acura SUVs may have lost power and engine size over the last 5–6 years, overall. Get the, now discontinued but it will be back in a year or so, Infiniti QX70. It will come back only with one engine size, the smaller one, with a uselessly large 3.6 liter engine and a power output of only 325 hp (basically almost like 10 years ago) and the torque is going to be almost pitiful for a car that wants to be perceived as really fast. Consider now the BMW X5, it comes in two versions (leave aside the diesel model and consider the petrol engines only at this moment): the small one (6 cylinders for about 3000cc has a power of 325hp with a much higher torque than the rest, i.e. faster acceleration, and the larger 8 cylinder model putting out 450 hp. This maybe too much for 99% of people, but 300 hp is nothing to brag about, in particular when a heavy vehicle is associated with a mediocre torque. Then there is (there was actually, but there will likely be one again soon), the M version that puts out almost 600 hp. Now, power aside, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, make many more car models and a good number of them are very large luxury vehicle and that skews the average against BMW and the Germans. Consider the natural competitor to the Lexus RX which is more like the BMW X3 or X4 than the X5 or larger cars performance-wise, and I am confident that the different in fixing any of those is going to be much closer than comparing a Lexus RX to BMW series 5 or 7 with 8 cylinder engines. So, again an issue of avoiding comparing apples to pears to conclude that bananas are tastier instead. Next, let’s also look at the offerings within each model/line and use SUVs again as an example. Lexus has basically 3 models : NX, UX, and RX. Then you have the big ones: the GX and the LX, but you see very few of those as they are massive and have a combined mpg of about 16 and 15 mpg, respectively, if I recall correctly. Let’s look at BMW: X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and most of them come with two engines which practically double the offerings, and they are quite different since the odd numbered models are the traditional ones and the even numbered have a coupe style, instead. Acura has only 2 SUV models. Infiniti has 4 or 5. Audi and Mercedes several more. But, it does not stop there: buy a Lexus or Acura or Infiniti: your choice of colors and interior/exterior combinations is so minimal that often you have one choice only! Ridiculous! I could not get an Acura RDX (a car I actually do like, the new version, not the previous one, although that had a turbo) in grey exterior and brown/red seats! And if I wanted the metallic blue colors to get the red seats I need to buy the A package that only adds sporty looks but 0 HP!!! to the engine! Ridiculous, again! On a Lexus RX it is the same story: they have a sport model where you pay extra only for cosmetics, but do not gain a SINGLE additional HP from the engine! Amazingly ridiculous!!! If I buy a BMW X3M it puts out 473 hp and if I add the competition package, it gets to 503hp!! almost double the output on an Acura RDX!!! Super ridiculous!!! Try toying around with combinations on an X5 or an similar Audi and Mercedes and you will be cursing the variety of choices that makes it hard to decide on something once and for all. Now, some offerings may be excessive, I would agree with that, but that does not mean that there should be only one option of color combinations either! If you are looking for cars with a personality, just these few lines are sufficient. If you only care to go from A to B, in style and a little bit of luxury and quality, and never long for any excitement while you drive then, yes, Lexus or Acura, are definitely better options. They even cost less, like $10–20k less of the similar models inside the BMW roster. But that does not mean that they are cheap, just cheaper than the equivalent size luxury German ones. Conclusion. If a brand does fewer models, i.e. produces higher number of the same parts, does not produce (by choice, because they surely could) high performance vehicle which are more demanding on parts or engineering, does not allow wide customization and then again uses the same parts over and over, I’d say that they should make more reliable cars. Otherwise, they have no purpose. It is not that German cars are low quality, it is just that they serve a different purpose. Low quality on very performing cars could be dangerous at best and lethal at worst.

Why do people always admire old cars when new ones are much faster and safer?

For many of us older drivers, we remember what it was like to climb into our cars and actually drive. Heading out on miles of endless roadways sitting in one of those old behemoths gave us the feeling of true freedom. Most people rarely ever left the area around their hometown and taking off on a road trip was quite exciting. There were no AAA road service vehicles located every five miles or gas stations at every intersection and fast food restaurants were few and far between. There were no GPS locaters, climate controlled interiors, power steering, or brakes and most cars had stick shifts on the column. You actually had to know how to drive a car, not just point it down the road and press the accelerator. Ascending and descending hills and mountains took skill and knowhow and with today's cars, that skill is no longer required. When people purchased their vehicles, it was with the intention of driving it for many years and possibly passing it on to their children. Not so today. Today's cars are manufactured with vast amounts of polymer based plastic components and being photo reactive, the plastic components are subject to deterioration and failure within a given period of time regardless of care or maintenance. This is the reason that most of the vehicles manufactured in the 1970's and 80's are no longer on the road. Metal, glass and even engine components are still available, but items like deteriorated dash panels, door handles and door panels, fender liners etc. are not. These unavailable parts must be custom fabricated if one is going to attempt to restore or maintain an older vehicle from that era. The cars from the 1960's and back were made with all steel, glass, and chrome with the exception of the carpet and seat upholstery, which makes them more desirable to collectors and old car enthusiasts. Having driven probably more different vehicles in my lifetime than most people will ever have the opportunity, I have learned that as the number of vehicles on the roadways has increased tremendously, the design of the vehicles needed to change significantly. The older cars were designed for two purposes, short distance work vehicles, and long distance highway cruisers. The short distance coupes were the everyday to and from work, school and grocery store transportation and the long distance sedans were designed to carry a family and all of their luggage, along with spare tires, and emergency roadside tools over long and potentially large distances. A road trip from the east coast to the west coast was a seven to ten day adventure at best and possibly more than two weeks at worst. You would basically live out of your vehicle for the entire time with the exception of bathroom and food breaks. I cannot recall the number of times I have driven down the highway seeing a child fast asleep in the rear window package tray and their siblings asleep on the back seat. As a young man, my first car in 1966 was a 1964 ford Thunderbird which I immediately rebuilt the engine and "souped it up" to over 600 horsepower. I still possess some of the speeding tickets I received for exceeding the speed limit by over 120 miles per hour. As I got older and had a family I began to look at the big highway behemoths like the Buick Electra, the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser station wagons, and the Chrysler New Yorker Broughams. Oh, I still had a 340 Dodge Dart GT and a Chevy Nova to drive around town, but for those cross country road trips, my favorite was my 1977 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham with a 440 big block engine. My family still remembers the trip we took from Florida to New Mexico when I was cruising at 100 mph around Dallas Texas and a Texas Ranger pulled up alongside me and motioned for me to go faster as I was holding up the traffic. Later that day another ranger pulled me over and asked me if I knew how fast I was driving, and I told him that the speedometer only went to 140 mph. He chuckled and informed me I was going over 165 mph. So I braced myself for the impending speeding ticket, but it turned out that the only reason he stopped me was because about two miles ahead there were dozens of workers crossing the street with cotton wagons and he didn't want me blasting through the middle of them. He wished me a good day, and then reminded me that when I saw the "Last Gas for 275 miles" sign, they were dead serious, and there was only one small outpost with a single gas pump and they were charging $9.00 a gallon for gas with a 5 gallon limit. I thanked him for the advice and when we were past the cotton wagons, I cranked it back up to full speed and continued on my way. We completed the 2100 mile trip in 19 hours including stops for fuel and food, so we averaged just over 110 miles per hour for the entire trip. Would I try that in a late model jelly bean car, not a chance. That old Chrysler weighed in at just over 6000 pounds and things like 30 or 40 mile per hour cross winds were no problem and bad pavement and uneven roadways went virtually unnoticed. Things that would destroy the tires and suspension on a late model speckmobile were of no concern to those huge highway monsters. Around town fuel mileage was somewhere between miserable and god awful, but on the open highway that monster got over 27 miles per gallon. Personally, I am a big guy, six foot two and 245 pounds and try as I might, the new late model cars are just too damned small. You don't get into them, you put them on like a pair of tight jeans. Even my current Crown Victoria and my wife's Mercury Grand Marquis are an uncomfortably tight fit for me. I miss the huge 60/40 overstuffed leather seats that were over six feet across and a rear seat that could hold three six footers side by side. Most people buy their new car's looking for better fuel economy, but is the 25 to 40 thousand dollar price tag actually worth the fuel savings? Comparing a vehicle that gets 20 mpg to one that gets 40 mpg that costs $25,000 dollars, one would need to drive that vehicle over 300,000 miles to recover the cost in fuel savings. I personally own two vehicles with well over 300,000 miles on them and most of the new cars will never make it that far. You would need to drive that new car almost 90 miles a day, seven days a week, fifty two weeks a year for ten years to break even on the cost for fuel savings. And at that mileage you would also be paying for huge repair and maintenance costs for two or three cam belts or chains, several steering and suspension\ rebuilds, multiple brake jobs and dozens of tire replacements that would increase the cost by well over an additional ten thousand dollars, and that's only if the vehicle lasted that long. And finally, for all of us old fogey's out there, there is the feeling of safety and luxury of a huge old land yacht. When you pull up to a stop light and the first two cars alongside you put together aren't even as big as your old huge sedan. I have had several late model "luxury" cars ram into the rear end of my old '65 Buick at a stop light. The 2017 Lexus RX 350 was obliterated and never even scratched the paint on my Buick. The 2018 Honda HRV needed over $15,000 in repairs and I had to have the paint buffed off of my rear bumper. A 2018 Ford Mustang totaled itself on the rear bumper of my 1983 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton pickup and the car had to be hauled away on two separate wreckers. The Highway patrol estimated the damages to my truck at less than $50 dollars. It doesn't matter how many air bags and crumple zones your shiny new little cookie cutter car has, smashing into something with three to four times the mass of your vehicle, will always result in the smaller vehicle losing the contest. Besides, I just can't feel very safe when I look out the car window and all I can see are the lug nuts on the semi tractor wheels alongside me on the interstate. Most of my other family members are driving late model cars but when they break down and need a ride, or they need to tow or haul something larger than a bag of groceries or when it's time for a road trip, they are at my front door wanting to borrow one of my old land yachts or pickup truck. And speaking of trucks, they too are not what they used to be either. The new trucks with fiberglass and aluminum beds and lightweight frames are almost useless as a truck. Their popularity is because they are still rear wheel drive and the driver sits higher than hubcap level while driving. A few months ago I replaced the wheel bearings and brakes on my pickup, and they had to order the parts because in today's trucks the bearings and brakes on my 3/4 ton truck are the same that are now used on a five ton truck or motor home! The total towing capacity is 15,000 pounds and the bed load is 4200 pounds. It has a 5:13 rear axle and a 360 wedge motor with a 4bbl carburetor. Using 93 octane 15% ethanol fuel it gets between 3 and 4 miles per gallon, but on 105 octane racing fuel it gets almost 16 mpg! So do the math, twice the price for fuel but 4 times the mileage. With a 40 gallon fuel tank, it costs around $130 to fill the tank with 15% ethanol fuel and $270 to fill the tank with racing fuel. The difference in mileage is incredible. 160 miles on a tank of ethanol fuel and over 640 miles on a tank of racing fuel. That's a 400% increase in mileage! Today's new trucks are outfitted like the luxury sedans of old with every conceivable new electronic gizmo and rear view cameras and towing option, but unless you are prepared to drop well over $70,000 dollars you won't get much of a workhorse. Quad and crew cabs for carrying more passengers or a family and beds that can't even carry a six foot 2x4 with the tailgate up do not make for a very good working truck. My old truck can carry a stack of 30 sheets of 4x8 plywood with the tailgate closed and still have room for over fifty more 8 foot 2x4's! Try that in a late model truck and it'll probably bend the frame or blow the tires. By today's standards you would need to buy something like a ford F650/750 series cab and chassis for around $60,000 and then add on the price of whatever bed or box you wanted to add to carry the same load as that old '83 dodge. I originally purchased the truck for $6200 dollars and the last offer I received was for $15,000 from a building contractor looking for a truck that could tow his earth mover and trailer. His new one ton Ford and one ton Chevrolets and Dodge Rams could barely move it. I just happened to be driving by a constructions site and noticed they had two one ton trucks trying to pull the earth mover on the trailer out of the lot. I offered to help and they hooked the trailer to my truck and I drove it out without a problem. The look on those guys faces when my old dodge just pulled it out of the sand effortlessly was priceless. They were all over my truck asking what I had done to give it that kind of power. I told them it was factory stock and they couldn't believe it. "But it has a full floater rear axle and 8 leaf rear springs" said one of the men. "Yes it does, but that was stock in 1983", I replied. After almost an hour of letting them examine under the hood and everywhere else, their boss offered to buy it from me. I declined the offer, but in less than three months they had added two '83 Dodge D250's to their inventory and they were using them to haul their large heavy equipment trailers. So, my friend, there is more than just nostalgia and memories to the older cars, and trucks, besides their looks. They are strong, powerful, reliable and more importantly more repairable than the newer cars and trucks. They do not have massive amounts of plastic that will simply deteriorate over time and few if any electric toys that can fail and leave you stranded or even locked out of your car. So if you are like me and you like to drive, without any electronic distractions and overpowered stereos, an old car can be a true joy to drive.
