It’s not even a contest. Ferrari wins without breaking a sweat. Two factors are important in a tug-o-war (or any towing situation): Torque and tire traction. Ferrari 458 has 389 lb-ft of torque vs Toyota’s 263 lb-ft; when it comes to tires, Ferrari has sticky patches twice the width of Toyota. Yes, Sienna is heavier at 4,430 lbs than Ferrari at 3076 lbs, but it is not a critical part of towing equation. End of story.
As a mechanic what car do you drive and what cars would you never own?
Let me say I started off as a GM tech and back then I thought GM and Ford built good cars. I've turned wrenched for over 25 years now and owner lots of vehicles American, European, and Japanese. I currently drive a Subaru(my second one with over 250,000 miles) and a Toyota Sienna(I've got kids and a van is useful). I will say every car on the planet will break down. No one builds the perfect car, they all just do it a little differently. European cars have more expensive parts. The perform well but parts aren't cheap and aren't always easily available. They use a lot of different bolts which require tools that will only be used on European makes. American, while I love America the big three haven't been making the best cars. Actually, they are more just American names and import more than they build here. All have some vehicles better than others, but I won't own anything Chrysler. Japanese make some decent vehicles. I don't like Nissan and prefer Subaru and Toyota. I drive them till they are dead and a Subaru with a manual transmission goes a long ways before it's dead. Korean cars, well I don't care if they've improved I won't own one. Kia should have stuck to making bicycles, that's how they started. I had to replace a transmission on a 2003 Sedona with 6 miles on it, blew the transmission backing it off the transport. Kia and Hyundai still have the worst warranty pay and if the pay isn't good then you can't keep great technicians. Everyone builds some cars that aren't very good but some are worse than others. American cars, or American names cars do tend to have the lowest priced parts. All cars require repairs and if you're paying someone else to do it then it gets expensive. Not every pop, squeak, and rattle really matters. The most important detail abouts cars is how they run not how they look.

Because minivans are dorky and look like you just gave up on life. Cars and the image they project are very important to us. The only minivan that doesn’t look like an appliance is the Toyota Sienna. At least it has some aggression built into its styling. Compare to this thing, which looks like a rolling appliance: It’s simply that people would rather drive around in this: That looks like you’re still competing in life and other people better watch out or you’re going to take their lunch money. The minivan looks like you’re the one who gets their lunch money taken.

Most of the answers here reference the natural balance issues involved, which is correct. In addition, though, auto manufacturers are always looking to reduce costs. One of the big drivers for doing so is what they call “efficiencies of scale,” which is basically recycling designs and components across the model range. That’s why, for example, you see Toyota invest in the ,“MC” platform,, which then ,spawns off a large number of models,: Toyota RAV4, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Avalon, Toyota Camry, Toyota Aurion, Lexus ES, Toyota Mark X Zio, Toyota Auris/Blade, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Corolla Rumion/Scion xB, Toyota Matrix, Toyota Venza, Toyota Avensis, Lexus HS, Lexus RX, Toyota Prius, Toyota Sienna, and the Scion tC. Engine development is complicated and expensive, potentially adding up to ,billions, in R&D costs. Manufacturers are discovering that the ,2-liter, 4-cylinder basic design, (often with turbochargers) works well for a wide variety of models, and can scale well for larger, more powerful (and/or sporty) models. For example, you can join two units together at the crankshaft to become a 4-liter, V8 engine. Similarly, take two inline-6’s (which are extremely well-balanced) and you’ve got a V-12. If more power is needed, turbochargers have proven themselves to endow V-12’s with well over 600hp, which is more than enough to propel large, heavy sedans (like Mercedes S-class, Audi A8, and BMW 7-series) with sports-car-like power. These V-12’s are important from a marketing perspective, but their overall manufacturing volume is relatively tiny, so the substantially greater costs associated with a unique engine like a V-14 would be prohibitively infeasible. Bottom line: There’s virtually no market for investing in and development of a one-off V14 engine.

Which is better, the Honda Odyssey, or Toyota Sienna? This is one of the hardest decisions for anyone who buys a (mini) van. They are both ironclad, proven performers and are the number one and two sellers in its class. This is probably the only time I will ever say Honda over Toyota. For starters, the name is much more elusive and exotic sounding. Why go to the Sienna mountain range, when you can go on an Oddesy? Agree? There’s not many other choices out there except for Dodge Caravan, and maybe one or two others, as most have gone to SUV’s or crossovers. So that pretty much makes it a head to head competition. These two are almost identical across the board, with the exception of the starting trim levels going to Honda with the small extras that are standard, that are not with Toyota. The opposite is true for the top trim level. Toyota’s limited with all options available would beat Honda’s top trim level fully loaded, minus the built in vacuum, (vacuum is not really decision factor IMO). The reclining middle captain’s chairs in the limited with the LED screens and Toyota’s Safety sense (edit: Safety Sense standard now on every Toyota Vehicle) and EnTune with Bose, is a big deciding factor. However, that is on the highest trim and an option, so the least amount of sienna’s sold will have this, thus making it sort of a niche advantage, where Honda, admitedly, has the same or slight advantage at all the other trim levels, making it the more common and not characteristic, of the two. Really these both are great vans, they have folding seats, stain protectors, they look decent, compared to the previous designs and competitors, but just a couple smaller, yet still important, factors would make me choose the Odessy over the sienna. Either way, you can’t lose or be disappointed, and minimal buyer’s remorse if any, with these two. Th
What's a good inexpensive tow vehicle under $10k used for a pop-up camper?
I'd probably look at a few models. The key is to get something that has a good powertrain, as there are lots of vehicles that can hold lots of people, but most of them fail in the face of tow duty (cough - Chrysler products - cough). I'd personally choose ,a used Tahoe or Suburban,, preferably one without a lot of luxury features or extras. The engine and transmission are strong on these vehicles, they're great for towing, and while there will be some things that break, the important and expensive parts are going to last. Worst case is probably a head gasket replacement (which isn't cheap but isn't exhorbitantly expensive). If the camper is small enough, ,a Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna, might be an option. Just make sure to a) get a vehicle that's 2009 or newer and b) make sure you know exactly what the trailer weighs when it's loaded and ready to go. NOTE: If you're going to be pulling the trailer in the mountains, I'd probably skip the minivan...but if it's mostly flat land towing, these two vans are solid. Mountain towing requires transmission cooling and that really means you need a tow package. UPDATE: Stan Hanks commented that the Odyssey has a transmission cooler if equipped with the official tow package...that's definitely something you want if you can find it. If you find an Econoline or Suburban/Tahoe, you can add a tow package to it if it doesn't already have one. I do not believe a cooling package can be added to the Odyssey or Sienna. Finally, there's no substitute for a good old fashioned 8, 12, or 15 passenger van (only the 15 passenger vans are prone to rollover, so maybe not that one). Ford is my favorite brand for these, and you can find a newer ,Econoline E150 or E250, that should have no trouble pulling the camper and hauling the family. Toyota has more spare parts availability. Go for Sienna, it's not fuel efficient but its reliable, safe and comfortable.
How much does installing a hitch on a minivan cost?
If you're handy you can save some money. If you're not handy, best to hire it out. I have installed several my own hitches complete with wiring for lights for about $150–200. One of my sons, who is also quite handy, recently installed a hitch and light wiring on his Toyota Sienna for about $200. One of my other sons, who is not so handy because, while he was growing up, he always had something more important to do when I was making repairs, paid $700 to have a hitch added to a newer SUV that he bought. Being that it was a car dealership, that was the extreme high end of pricing, I'm sure. If you shop around, you can probably get hitch and light wiring installed within a $300–400 range. If you have brakes on your towed vehicle, that will add maybe another $60 in parts and labor. I'm guessing on the hired installation prices based on my knowledge of parts prices but labor will vary from one area to another. Shops that specialize in towed vehicles are likely to give you a better deal than automotive repair shops. They will also be more knowledgeable about your specific needs based on your model of minivan and your towed vehicle. You don't say what you intend to tow. Typically, minivans are not going to safely pull more than 3500 lbs, on average, and will be limited to about 100–200 lbs of hitch-tongue weight. A hitch might rated for 200 lbs on the tongue but I would not go over 100 lbs on a minivan without a leveling hitch.

(Although this doesn’t apply somewhat to German cars, which are seen as high-class and quite popular in Japan) But, if you’re looking hard or have been living in Japan for a some time, sometimes you could come across this: When I saw this I immediately think: "Who in their right mind imported a full size left hand drive American truck Dodge Ram into Japan?" Then I saw U.S. Air Force sticker on the back then thought, it's probably one of those U.S. Naval Base military members stationed in Japan. But then again, it's quite jarring to see it on narrow Japanese roads. Just look at its size compared to a large family van Toyota Previa; it could surely crush a small Japanese kei car easily! But actually, even some Japanese would import American cars themselves, such as this Ford Explorer: That's a screenshot from an app called "Anyca", which lets you rent a car from a regular car owner, similar with Turo in USA, which is like an AirBnB for cars. That Ford is being offered for rent by a Japanese for 8000 yen per day (US$71/day) which has this sentence as the selling point: 左ハンドルアメ車！乗りやすさ抜群！後期型！ (Left hand drive American Car! Easy to drive! The latest model!) Apparently, there is a niche market for an American cars in Japan. Very negligible, but it exists. And then you got this: A good old plain looking Toyota Sienna with left hand drive steering wheel. (But that’s Toyota, a Japanese car isn’t it?) Yes, it’s a Toyota, or rather I’d say, Toyota North America. Toyota Sienna is only sold in North America (USA, Canada) and it’s not sold in Japan, probably because it’s too large. But somehow, the market of importing American-made Japanese car is alive and well; there is even a term for it: 逆輸入 (gyaku yunyuu) which literally means “reverse import”. I don’t know who imports these cars, or the market demographic, but my guess is those people are Japanese who has lived in North America for a while and like big cars, but still want to stick with Japanese brands. So yeah, beside Toyota Sienna, you could buy Toyota Tundra or Acura RDX in Japan legally; just be prepared to pay higher taxes!
