So I will answer this question only based on the information that I have. This experience might highly vary, and it might be different from person to person, and I suggest that you don't waste my time by telling me, "but XYZ said ABC",. I shall be providing you with reasons for my belief, but it's up to you at the end — obviously. Once again, I shall be speaking from my own experiences as well as experiences of my friends. ,We are all still students ,(Edit: Many of us are now working professionals),. However, I shall also mention the experiences of seniors from my university ,(RWTH Aachen), who have already been placed here, and the few Indians that I met here who have stayed here for years. Automobile Students Congrats! You have been admitted to one of the premier Leagues. Germany is known worldwide for its automobile companies, and you'll be learning the best from the best. As ,Frank Kemper,, a German journalist, once put somewhere on Quora ",If I were you, I'd try to study at a German university and try to contact German car manufacturers for an internship or a limited contract. This may give you a well renowned diploma as well as working experience with leading companies." Volkswagen,- First and foremost, given the scandal. But even before that, a pointless disclaimer- I am going to start an internship and a master thesis with VW R&D at their headquarters soon ,(Edit: I worked there for a year, and did simulation research on Audi R8!),. So, we all know that Volkswagen is in trouble. Big trouble. Big big trouble. Big big big trouble. Big big...I know you get the gist. After all, a CEO as powerful as Winterkorn won't resign, that, fast if he didn't know what is coming. Having said that, you need to consider the size of Volkswagen. Germany's GDP is 2 times that of India, and Volkswagen makes up around 3.5% of that GDP., ,That means that Volkswagen alone is responsible for the same amount of money as 7% of Indian GDP,., That should give you a scale. So, we know India would do anything to help save that much money,. I expect the same from Germany ,(although even a heavy drop in diesel car production and exports would probably not subtract more than 0.2% from the total German GDP), and the amazing lawyers that VW can buy with all it's profits. Even if they don't, I expect Volkswagen to lose something like 20 billion euros, tops ,(Edit: I was underestimating the scope. The scandals are still coming out, and VW ended up paying near 25 billions in fine),. That was just near its profits for the last year. Hence, VW would run a year on no-profit-no-loss. That's bad for the shareholders, but it shall easily survive the pain. More than that, it would come back stronger. ,VW is the world's biggest spender on R&D-, many billions more than Toyota, Apple, Google, Microsoft or IBM. And when they want to, I believe their R&D would spew magic ,(Tesla being the main competition, and VW understands that already),. Rolls Royce ,- Ooooh. That's all I hear about it. They hire not too many interns, but my friend there is doing the most amazing work I've ever seen an intern being asked to do. ,(Edit: He ended up doing his master thesis there as well),. BMW,- they hire quite a lot of students as interns. But, as far as my friends are concerned, the work can be boring. Audi,- they don't hire interns as much as BMW, but still a good number. Porsche, - hire a bit lesser than Audi. Ford,- You need the contacts. That's all I know as of now. All these companies named above survive on the works of interns and thesis students, but barely every offer a full time job to a fresher. Most students end up working for these companies through smaller contractors anyway. Mechanical Engineering Once again, congrats! Germany is Germany based on the powers of mechanical. They went through what is popularly known as the ",Mechanical Miracle," Era, and came out a lot stronger. I am hoping to be a product of this generation of mechanical engineers, and I am proud to be so! DLR,- The Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raum-fährt. The German Aerospace Center. As it would be for any other researcher, it was also my dream to work for one of the top aerospace agencies in the world, and I got two offers of internship plus master thesis with them. But the stupid stupid dates didn't match up with my university and hence I could not join there. They are amazing, and give an exceptional chance to learn. Hella,- because this is the least I owe them. I had an amazing interview and an awesome time talking with them, and they were the first one kind enough to offer me an internship and a master thesis. They are an amazing firm with excessively sweet people, and some extremely good researchers. It’s the only offer in my life that I seriously regret not taking. I had to unfortunately say no to them as it was my childhood dream ,(coming from India all the way to Germany), to work on a satellite project that got offered to me by DLR, and then unfortunately the DLR project also didn't go through because of clash of dates and permissions from my university. Just my luck :/ Bosch,- They take in maybe thousands of engineers every year, in every field, but especially from mechanical. They do really good research, and the students learn a lot about life at bigger companies through Bosch. Fraunhofer, - one of the biggest research Institutes in Germany, it seems like half their work force are students working under amazing researchers. Airbus, - they hire a bit lesser students, but take them for a long time. Boeing,- they mostly take German students to their plant in France, but they really focus on the marks. You need to have excessively good grades, and maybe that's all. Experience does not matter to them as much. All automobile,- as for automobile students. But obviously, they'll be given preference on core engine and designing subjects, we'll be given preference in more general work. All production companies,- because if I start mentioning each thing mechanical engineers can do, then Quora might think of a word limit. Going on beyond the companies, and into the rules that govern them. I think these are the policies that make or break a student's career prospects I did my research before coming to Germany. They have a few rules that may seem harsh, but make immense sense when I look at them and think about them for a moment. 670 Euro rule,- You need to show that you either already have, or will be earning, atleast 670 euros per month for your visa to be extended. Every country does that- India included. During your degree, you can work 19 hours a week. After your degree, you can also can take student job for unlimited hours, and earn more than 750. The idea is that after a degree and industrial experience, you ideally should be capable enough and have made with contacts to earn your living. If not, you better not be dying on the streets because of hunger- that would severely damage the reputation of a developed nation. We are coming here partly to not go through that in India- to live in a developed nation, aren't we? Which nation allows people to stay without showing any means of sustainability? And believe me, 670 is required for a decent standard of living, at least what the Germans think of as a decent standard of living. 120 day rule,- I've been burned by this. You can work maximum of 120 days a year. I had two contracts offered by the German Aerospace Center, one of the best space research centre in the world. Would've fulfilled a life dream, but alas- all my 120 working days will be finished working with Volkswagen. So I know the pain of only working 120 days- which is actually in total more than 6 months, given they don't count weekends and holidays. ,Why not take that rule away? ,Because then many students would come to Germany with no interest in education but only to work part time — waiter or so — to fund their dreams of world travel, and Germany needs educated motivated workers, not people who simply want to take advantage of the system. They are spending money on you that their tax payers are paying, and they need returns. Not unfair, at least not in my books. No clear job role, - no rule clearly states what job I need to do after my degree is over. That depends on the visa officer. That somehow sounds harsh to a few people. But you need to consider a few things here - the most important of them being that they want people of high skills. You really shouldn't be working as a sweeper after a degree in CS. That should not allow you to stay indefinitely in any country, let alone one in which others are waiting for their fair turn. But the rule allows me to not be forced to work only in one area. I am a mechanical engineer who doesn't want to be told that I should only work in design. I found an employer who was willing to give me a job in marketing and management, because he saw that I had some skills in that area. If he's willing to hire me for my non-core skills and pay me well for that, I don't think that I should be forced to go back because, "Rule A.13.6 of section 3.7 of article 5A" ,states very clearly that a student who has studied Computer Aided Conception and Production in Mechanical Engineering is allowed to only work as a structural engineer in a company with at least 327 people. I think it's a very good thing that there is no clear rule forcing me to work in a given area of expertise- it would be bad for Germany, bad for me, and given the plethora of courses- a general problem with logistics with people trying to ,"prove", how electronics is related to wall painting only to get around the rules. 1.5 years work search visa-, read that once again. This was one of the main reasons why I came to Germany. USA allows people to search for a job for 3 months after a degree. France 6. Sweden as well. Some courses in Germany don't even last 1.5 years! That means you get to study for the same time that you can search for a job. In my case, the course is harder and the visa officers acknowledge it- I was given a student visa for 3.5 years, and they shall give me a work visa for 1.5 more years. That's 5 years of opportunity. How can I blame anyone if I can't do everything required of me till then? P.S,.- People on Quora have told me that I am an optimistic fool. Go ahead, call me that. ,I'd rather be an optimistic fool than be a pessimistic ass like you., I think when you're pessimistic, you try lesser and have a bad attitude- regardless of you acknowledging it or not- and your behavior in general shows it, and others see it in you. No wonder that they'll trust you lesser. I live a nice life, I work hard, and I don't give up easy. I had my struggles, more than I would mention publicly, and I might have a lot more. I don't come from a rich family, and I am here in a student loan - though the major portion of it is lifted by the shoulders of my brilliant brother and loving father. I know others might be lesser fortunate than me, while still others might be more. But I don't cry ",unfair," everytime that the going gets tough, and tell everyone how everything in the system is broken just because it's not ideal for me. I am glad that I came to Germany. Especially given that the alternative was USA or staying in India (where the cast system caused me and my family a lot of issues). And looking at Donald Trump and Ben Carson, their views and ,(to me, surprising), popularity, I can see the love of my German friends in sharp contrast. P.P.S —, There you go, naysayers. I’m updating this answer after years. As you guys kept telling me, I would not find a job at the end, because apparently the Germans don’t give jobs to foreigners?! Hahahahaha. I found my first temporary job at a startup for FEM/CFD within a month of finishing my degree, and then another permanent job as a FEM engineer in nuclear R&D in another 3 months. I got lucky, but most other friends also managed to get awesome full time jobs in the first 6–8 months! During this job-search time, we were allowed to do whatever part-time work that we could find, and hence never really got into severe financial issues. If things go well, I shall have a permanent residence card in less than a couple more years, and then not have to even worry about the visa and all crap. There you go. That’s my story till now. As they say, the best revenge is a life well lived! So you go keep crying, as you did for years. Meanwhile, I shall go enjoy the end of my 35-hour workweek by chilling in the pool with my beloved ,Augustiners,!
